..the POV action sometimes veered off center, which you don't have much control over when you have your hands full working on the roof, but it did give a closer detailed look at the work when centered, which is a good thing.

Some things are common sense but still should be taught like how to put nails in your pouch, long chalk lines sag and don’t get your glue strips covered in gravel… these rules you often don’t know until you’ve experienced the resulting headache that follows. Great job on all the explanation of everything it takes to roof. Always checking with your local codes is so important because some areas require two rows of ice shield because of the overhang of the roof. This gives plenty of safety for ice building up. Dimensional are always such a great look and actually are not a huge cost factor. Regular tab shingles I've done, I've off set 3 rows that would show more of a diagonal look instead of every other row staggered.
I've measured from the ridge as well when you get closer to the top so the top looks straight. Of course as you stated, everyone has a different way. Huge crews of 8-10 are amazing to watch how well they all have a way to do each part. It looks like the roof is being poured on. Cutters do their thing as others do.
I've never had the chance to use that style ridge vent and it does look really nice when done.
If cap shingles are available. I like that too. It saves a lot of time and cutting which offsets the cost as well.
Glad you covered the importance of safety as well. I know a roofing company that has special shoes with a tall heel so on 12/12 pitch (even 6/12 pitch) it doesn't bother your ankles.
Great job Josh and get some sunscreen on my friend. Hahaha
    🔨🔨👍🏻👍🏻

    • @TheExcellentLaborer
      @TheExcellentLaborer  Год назад +2

Oh yes, it’s amazing how codes vary so much from town to town and county to county. I remember doing three tab shingles when I was a kid and they are much different than the dimensionals. A dimensional shingle install is much quicker and looks better.
Oh wow you have much more experience working with crews of roofers versus me. It’s typically me and one helper or my father. Oh yes, safety is very important and I definitely agree I need more sunscreen on lol. My wife said it’s the best farmers tan she has ever seen! I hope all is well with you David and I appreciate you watching!

Easily a 9.5/10 video. Awesome production with a few tricks new to me. My only concerns/recommendations:
    - A brief discussion on why pinching underlayment under the rake metal but hanging over the fascia metal would have been nice; I've had senior installers train BOTH ways, with one yelling at me for NOT pinching underlayment under fascia metal for fear wind will eventually lift up that first run of underlayment/starters and get at the deck - a fear that is clearly eliminated by using butyl-backed (sticky) ice-and-water barrier for your first run anyway. Obviously standard underlayment falling over the fascia metal ensures moisture weeping does not fall behind the fascia wood, right?
    - Nails securing your T-metal should have been completely hidden by the ice and water underlayment, no? And if I'm understanding right the outer fascia will also be attached by another run of nails through your T-metal. Shouldn't your ice-and-water barrier be installed to the farthest-most point of your T-metal to cover that eventual run of nails, too?
    - You used a T-style drip metal versus the more common L-style; it would be awesome if a pro of your nature - and ability to articulate - would make a damn good video covering different drip metals and how to cut them.
    - Fast shinglers like to use the guide on their coil nailers to space out their book and ensure they're shooting the correct line without thinking much. That would be cool to hear a brief mention of.
    - Not sure I heard mention of closed versus open soffits, and the importance of switching to a staple gun to avoid unsightly penetrations.
    Thank you for your effort!

Great video. I was looking to understand how shingling a roof worked. I have a chicken coop I'm building and I wanted to shingle it. This video was really helpful.

Thank you so much for filming, editing, and publishing this video. You really do a great job of going over the details without belaboring the viewer. I think I might just hit play and let your video run so you can get more advertising dollars. 😏

Just found your channel and have been binge watching. Great videos! Surprised to learn you are a respiratory therapist. Circa 1970-71 l worked as an inhalation therapist which were the beginnings of the respiratory therapy field. In fact, I passed the first national examination for A.A.I.T. Certification. Keep up the great work!

Oh wow congrats on being a respiratory therapist as well! It’s definitely not a bad job to have for sure. I’m glad you found my channel as well. It should be helpful if you are new to DIY and construction. Stay tuned for more videos! Thanks for watching!

Excellent video. I noticed that the amount of rope that you have between the anchor and your back is far greater than the distance you would be falling if you were to fall off this particular roof, especially with the additional expanding 6 feet of the fall strap added into the equation. You might want to get a few more anchor points if you are doing another long roof like this so you can keep the yellow rope no longer than the length of the pitch of the roof. As you had it set up while you were working at the edge of the roof in the earlier part of the video, you'd hit the ground long before the rope would ever be able to save you...

You put a lot of trust in the truss peaks I've set more trusses than I care to think about but when the ceilings inside change so does the truss although not by much but enough to throw your measurements off when measuring down to pop lines for your shingles and I'm sure you know that but a lot of people don't realize that. In any case a quick glance down the peak will tell ya which truss to pull measurements from.
I'm just rambling I'm sure most people watching know this
