  • @barrymilam9665
    @barrymilam9665 2 года назад +11

    Great work guy, Also I see your point about not running the starter shingle up the gable. It seems to me each shingle going up keeps one another down. I'm not a roofer, I'm a plumber of 50 years and I like learning new things and yes I'm roofing my roof all by myself. I've got to put down 75 bundles on my roof. I have a 8/12 pitch with a gable on the front, hip in the back with two valleys. I'm going to do my valleys the way you do sometimes, the closed valley or as they say the california valley. Here in Alabama your're not required to use the storm guard in your valley, but I wanted it, so I did. It rained like hell yesturday June 15th and no water got through the synthetic felt. You do a good job simplifying things with your words and that's a big plus. Keep your videos coming...

    I always chalk layout because it looks better having perfectly straight shingles and it doesn't take that much extra time. The fastest speed hacks use the gauge and never let go of the gun but on hot days the gauge can dig into the shingle and really screw up the layout. Also if multiple people are on the same section their gauges may be slightly different.
    Ice shield expands when it's hot so if you throw it down cold in the morning you might have a bunch of wrinkles by lunch time. You can cut the wrinkles but that will make it less waterproof. On really hot days I'll tack the end of the ice shield then roll it out with the plastic on and let the sun hit it for a minute so it expands then I yank it tight, tack the end and pull the plastic from underneath it

      I looked at your Ruthan video. I like how you work on Roofs, you are picky at your job which is great. Because whatever roof you put on someone’s home, it’s going to be a great job if you do it. My husband passed away, but before the Doctors determined on what was wrong with him, he had started tearing up everything he touched. I have been having a lot of work done to my home. But I do see the right way of Putting on a new roof. I know I’m going to need one but I can’t do it right now. You do a Beautiful job at putting on a roof. I’m in my late 60s And I have crippling arthritis. I can’t do any work like I used to be able to. Please be safe doing the roofing jobs. ❤️🙏🙏❤️

      It is not a roof opening at that point and metal fascia should go about 2 5/8" behind getter apron and gutter over that too. water is very unlikely to get blown up over 2 inches under that installed corectly with no sealants required...Ice dams are a whole other issue and any amount of "prep" will not prevent in a bad scenario

    i thought nailing IN/ON the tar line was a big 'NO' and that is due to the fact you're reducing the adhesive area for the next row of shingles. Do manufacturers specify one way or the other? I have all the material for my 12x12 shed laying on my garage floor and I suppose I could go out and read it but I probably would not know what I was reading anyway, lol

      @@natebrown2111 during the process of liquid adhesion the water will curl over the edge of the shingle and onto the drip edge surface and it will then travel wherever gravity takes it. Which would be all the way down to the bottom edge of it. This is why if you look closely when it's raining, you may see a small stream of water steadily dripping from the very bottom tip or corner of the drip edge face.
      The thinking is if there is no shingle overhang that water will curl over the edge of the shingle and since there is no overhang it will travel on top of the drip edge and under the roof instead of down to the bottom of the drip edge
      Edit: oh and it looks bad to cut it flush. Installers only do it because they're too lazy to snap a chalk line or lacking enough skill to cut a straight overhang

  • @txman201

    Starter on the gable is there to hold down the end of the shingle run so that wind doesn't lift it and blow water under it. With the starter holding the end of the shingle down via adhesive at the edge, any small amount of water that does get in is now on top of the starter, where it will begin to run downhill and come put at the downstream seam(s). Odd you can't see why it's called for by roofing material manufacturers.

    • @Lifes_Apprentice
      @Lifes_Apprentice  Год назад

      Thats what the ribs on the edge are for and when nailed properly it will not blow off. When using starter you let it hang over the edge more and it allows wind to grab edge of shingles easier

    • @bobbarker9986
      @bobbarker9986 Год назад +1

      That's not true. Leaving the starter strip hang over 3/8" is not enough for the wind to get under it. The shingles you are using have the adhesive on the top side so there is no adhesive on the bottom of the shingles so yes they are all glued together but if you have too much pressure on your nail gun or the nails are too short (both could happen with a homeowner) then the entire assembly could blow off with enough wind but more than likely it will be fine. you'll get a lot less water running under the shingles with the starter strip method. 45 years roofing and still going. Thanks for your video.
