You're a great teacher. My husband and I started a roofing company together, he's been in the business for 5 years and I know next to nothing about the whole process, so this was really helpful! Thank you :)
I just started working at a roofing supplies company, and these videos have taught me what I need to know to understand product and how it works! Thanks for the videos!
I have learned so much from you sir. From remodeling bathrooms, funding the retaining wall, building the shed, roof, and now this. I cant thank you enough for your help. Thank you very much.
hello the starter course is also to hold the first shingle down in times of heavy winds and hurricane the strip of tar supposed to be to the very end/edge by the drip edge so that it can be effective in holding the ends of the first course down. thank you for all of your videos I always watch them..... I love them!
Jamon Rudon I’m understanding the tar eventually heats up sealing a nail ..and in the video the 3 tab shingle’s tar line is bout 6-8 inches up .. so your say we should cut the 3 tabs off till the tar line is flush with the edge ?
@@franciscocharco2291Not flush with the edge, but an inch or 2 up from the edge is fine. The way it's done in the video is leaving 6-8 inches of shingle just able to flap in the wind.
As a home owner, I cannot afford a roof replacement. So this helps me make small repairs as I go. For this coming year, I will replace the whole roof top since the cedar shingles are rotten. Thank you for making this video series for the non roofing common folk. Thank you.
"Never break the silence, if its not to improved It" (Beethoven) I'm 64 (not a roofer)started working when I was 13 years old, always enjoyed GOOD tips and how to improved and refresh my knowledge Thank you for your time and tips.
I've done some roofing and now my roof needs replacing. I got and estimate of $10,000 and that gave me a lot of courage and motivation to tear off and replace my roof with laminate shingles. I'm 68 and in good shape and believe I can do it. I'm still planning how I will go about taking it one section at a time. I will also use some kind of fall protection. I like you vid. Very helpful.
Frank youre gunna fall off the roof or your asshole is gunna fall out from the bending over. Just spend the money my guy. Your old ass back will thank u.
Get atleast one helper especially to tear off the old roof, and hand you shingles while you nail them down would make it much easier and much less moving for you.
I just paid 10,000 today for a new roof. It’s not getting any cheaper. Did you ever replace your own roof? There’s a lot more to it than just laying down shingles.
I'd just pay someone to tear it off install it myself if I was you order the material from a roofing yard so they load it for you once you got the old roof off it's only like 100 for them to load it but unless you've installed 100s of roofs its probably going to come out like shit
This video series is great. I took a side job doing shingle work for a friends parents and I’ve only had framing experience, this video has given me great confidence. Thank you!
If you think about why he made the video it would be clear. Hes showing those that are not experienced how to roof. Hes not showing journeyman / foreman how to be faster. If he would of made the video that way i would be lost. So many neg comments. Its easy to pick apart peoples videos from the comfort of your home. I dont think most of the people talking crap would dare post a video of themselves, too scared of what people might point out. I enjoyed the video, great work bro, Thanks.
he nails in the wrong place so he is showing ppl how to do it wrong, on the west coast his roofs would leak bad. placement of nails is very important haha you are to dumb or have never roofed so you would not understand this hahaha
Teaching people how to do it wrong is not helping. Simply not using an actual starter strip will void the shingle warranty and cause the edge tabs to lift.
Thank you for this video. Helped me to redo the side of my house that have shingles. Haven't had a scafolding, but I used 2 old painting scaffolding put opposite on top of each other . I did 1/4 this year and next year will do rest. I am an older woman and your videos where the best info.
Your starter strips should have the tabs cut off and then they should be installed with the tar strip at the bottom edge of the roof. You do this so there is a tar strip to "glue" down the bottom of the first row of shingles.
i enjoy how mr shannon do saftey. as a blk woman / homeowner. id like to do things myself and not pay someone because i like to save. thank you sir for being a blessing for people who choose to attack home projects.
I see negative comments on almost everything I've watched on youtube, everything from music, especially political which I never comment on, construction, and everything else under the sun, I don't know why but there's negative wherever you go. I have experience in construction but my main skill is residential painting and drywall, I've been doing both for 20 years now but like to learn different things and like watching experienced people so I can add it to my own styles. I've been in the industry long enough to be able to see if someone knows what they're talking about, I don't know carpentry very well, did a little concrete, did a few roofs, not unattended though, I love learning things and totally respect these people taking the time to show all of us how they do it, nobody does it the same but may know what they're talking about and realized this over 20 years ago. Thank you so much for your training us.

Shannon, thanks very much for doing these videos and sharing your knowledge and wisdom. I used your videos often to do a complete re-roof of a detached garage. Greatly appreciated!
I'm just starting this career path and you are very informative and patient. I'm sure you can really move when you get in the groove. Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. You got my like and subscribe. Keep up the good work of giving tips and tricks of the trade.
Shannon you are the best how to tutorial on youtube. You do this job correctly the way its suppose to be done. Listen to shannon people and you will have no problems with your roof after installing your new roof shingles.
Thank you so much for your great informative way in explaining your video. It's so relieving to finally come across a diy video, on installing roof shingles, which doesn't begin with a maddening worker who appears to be in a race for his life. Lol thank you very much
Your tutorial is very informative and really clear. I love it. Learning a lot from you, taking notes as I’m watching. I was just given an appraisal for shingles replacement on my small backyard shed - $700 Canadian. Forget it. A small job like that would take a professional a couple of hours. It will take me a day, but I can do it with this tutorial. Thank you for the great lesson.
I've done roofing before but forgot alot of the details and ur video is very specific helping me prepare for the task at hand. Thank u very much. Well done video
Hey Shannon, I am a fellow " All Around " contractor out here in Cincinnati Ohio. I just wanted to express my gratitude for the FREE SERVICE you're providing for us. A simple thumbs up isn't enough. Dude I have been watching your videos for years. I have been a salesman my whole life, but I learn extremely fast once I'm showed how to do anything, once. I have had so many jobs where I would land it and not have a clue how to really do it. Then I'd watch and study your videos on it and by the time I get out there I look and perform like a pro, EVERYTIME!!! You break everything down as to how to do it and why it needs to be done that way which is all I need to master anything. Just wanted to say thank you and keep up the good work Shannon
I deliver / yard guy at a roofing provider. A customer asked me why the sale guy sold him IKO Marathon which is a 3 tab shingle as opposed to a leading edge and I couldnt answer that question for him today. Now I know the difference. Thanks, Im going to watch onto the next video to see how the hip and ridge or shadow ridge shingles work. Nice work explaining it for a dummy truck driver like me.
i asked the sales guy what the difference is and he was clear in his explanation I just didnt understand i guess. The leading edge bundles are 120 feet of shingles and cost a lot more, and the marathon is 60 foot and cost a lot less. also looks like the 3 tab shingle your using is flat as opposed to the main shingle.
Only thing I would change is the starter strip. Cut off the 3 shingles and flip the shingle right side up, so you have the glue strip at the edge of the roof, so the first row of shingles has something to seal to as well.
Just buy a couple bundles of starters, one bundle goes a long way, you're absolutely right about needing that tar line at that bottom course, during high winds, you'll definitely have some shingles blowing off..
This guy is great at what he does! He didn't make these videos to wow anyone. It's educational rather than just entertaining. If you don't want to learn then go watch something else. 😊
We always cut the tabs off and put the tar strip on the bottom for our starters, also, we have to use webbing and roof cement "bull" on top of the drip edge.
Roofing code is different in every area depending on what the weather is like or how they feel that day. When I saw him start putting down grip guard I was amazed the code allows him to just Throw a shingle the wrong way as a starter strip. I was sure they where going to at least get antsy about a tar bead to prevent wind lifting up the first row..bunch of commies at the code dept. In my area theyre like throw one upside down i dont care. Underlayment? yeah, were not saying you need it. But youtubes and googles seems inundated with shingle corporations trying to upsell you purpose built starter strip. You here to teach me or sell me a bunch of bunk? Thats why I will never use schluter and spit on them. Theyre out here clogging up my tubes trying to sell bull. But. If you built it like you where about to die in a snow storm hurricane. Im saying you upcoded it and it would probably last longer..maybe..I guess. Since the 3 tab shingle weather rots and needs replacement no matter what you do.
Sir I have followed you for quite a while and appreciate the knowledge and more so your patience on teaching or the passing of some knowledge to us retards in this crazy fast world and especially our sensitive society. Your a proper man sir in every way and much appreciate you.
i like to cut the shingle in half, leaving the tar strip on, and use that for my starter strip..that way the tar is on the bottom by the drip edge holding down the shingle by the edge of the roof
Your way is correct. the tar strip must be at the bottom to prevent blow off. Cut the tabs off, or more easily, buy a starter strip. Read the manufacturer's instructions. The tabs being up the roofline can also trap water from flowing down. It also causes the first shingle to be double thick at the top making a ridge. I am not a roofing person, I just consulted the shingle manufacturer's website (GAF) for the correct installation procedure. Remember to consult your local building codes which are very specific depending on geographical location.
I made the mistake of starting before watching Shannon's video: totally screwed up because the manufacturers instructions were so complicated. Had to rip it off, watch Shannon's video and now the job looks great. I should remember to start with HouseImprovements! Thanks Shannon.
Ole plumb bob chalk line lol? Damn good remodeler/carpenter/teacher for sure!!! I'm a framer and did windows/doors in the past, but always wanted to learn the right way to roof!! Sweet!!
Hi I'm a single mother trying to safe some money on my house. With your video I was able to follow your step on how to install shingles and I did it, if I have a chance I'll post before and after pic Thank You
Just watch part 2 of the roofing video Eric been a while since I did roofing couldn't remember the Drip rail sequence. I like this fellas straightforward no nonsense no theatrics approach. Yet he is not dry meaning that I stay interested in this 20 minute videos. Bought 101 year old house. Lady attorney waving around paper saying it and appraisal for more than twice what it was bidding for. Then at closing she couldn't produce it and said there were no appraisals! Already committed to buy the house by then hear it I've often said we could have our own RUclips channel while doing this house the detached garage is what we're roofing and I actually use five quarter boards treated. You know what to use for flooring a deck. I use that to replace repair of oak lap board underlayment of the old garage they are the same thickness roughly 1 in parrot the old house is made of oak all the way through. It's only saving grace and probably why it's still standing. The foundation is interesting. It's been redone to a certain point. No real support throughout the center of the structure throughout the crawl space. What is there just loose and beginning to roll out. So I hope this fella has a few more videos on things other than roofing and his approach remains the same. Oh yeah one is side note I actually have solid oak 2x10 real dimensional lumber for floor joist. The walls are made by oak 2x4s that really measure 2 inches by 4 inches. Anybody want to do a RUclips on this house? We're still putting in the piers in the crawl space. Fortunately I can still remember some of this stuff growing up around it and thankful for RUclips. Judging from this one video of this site on one stage roofing I don't really thankful for this guy. A jack of all trades definitely needs coaching along the way because I am truly now a master even one trade hear it thank you for putting out this video
Never let a roofer tell you you need new sheating if you have individual boards. The individual boards extend the life of shingles by allowing some air through and dissipation of heat. You may need to replace some of the boards but never allow the to replace with plywood unless the wood is in bad shape. Just go with a shingle that allows for it.
Thanks Shannon! This is absolutely the best and most professional roofing video I've found. Excellent presentation and delivery with clear and calm audio. Excellent detail. You cover the details that other videos gloss over. Kudos as well to your videographer. Excellent framing of the subject, including closeups, and little camera shake. I was impressed with how little wind noise there was, considering how the trees were swaying in the wind. Thank you for the time and effort that everyone put into this tutorial. Your information line indicates that you are located in Saskatchewan. I live in Oregon, but I watched your video, because I'm leaving next week to go to Bruno, Saskatchewan to help a cousin put new roofs on two small farm buildings. I've done a couple of roofs before, but it's been a long time and your video was a great way to brush up on the latest requirements.
Thanks very much for your comments. We try our best to deliver more information than most other people in this space and with the best video and sound results as well. It is nice when we receive comments like yours , noticing all the little things we strive for. We are in Sask. and I hope you enjoy your time here with your cousin. Its been really rainy and stormy as of the last week or so But the heat is supposed to hit now again. I would suggest that you will encounter our Saskatchewan mosquitos ! LOL
Thank you for the details on the flashing! I see so many roofers pin the flashing down on top of the felt along the bottom. I’ve repaired a lot of rotted sheeting and facia boards due to this.
Bryan Sissell because the I&W IS, supposed to go under the metal at the bottom edge per the manufacture specifications along with the gable ends. He’s doing it wrong. With the way he’s done it the ice can back up under the metal from the gutter and get into the facia. If it runs down from above then it would simply run under the metal and out into the gutter if installed correctly. And this is not.
“... simply run under the metal and out into the gutter ...” soaking the unflashed facia edge beneath the metal in the process and resulting in the rot at the bottom edge that Bryan has repeatedly seen. The video does show the flashing going on top of the paper on the outside edges of the roof.
as a professional roofer for 25 years i would recommend a bead of mastic around the perimeter of the roof as well as in between the starter strip and the first course.
Awesome video series . Should probably mention that the drip edge should not be installed flat against fascia board , but should stick out 1/2 to 3/4 in. Beyond the board so water does not find its way behind the gutter.
I'm sick of the idiots making negative comments . We all don't have to work by the same system. The main concern is being sure that we all follow the safety code so we don't have to worry about home inspectors etc... geesh!
Orta Blood amen!💯 every person is going to have their own specific way of doing it to their liking and at least he seems to take the criticism in stride
Good Video Shannon i just installed the GAF WeatherGuard - ROLL was Very Heavy , is Mineral infused , the Plastic Backing is Very Slippery and the TEMP was HOT about 25c , my shed is 12x10 Roof Pitch 4/12 - When Hot the Backing is Tar Like - just as Sticky as RAT Trap Sticky Pads , i did it also on the Gable Ends with the GAF Blue Felt pad in the Center
We have been releasing videos on a little wider time frame the last year. We are releasing new ones every three weeks right now. Our latest one was last weekend.
All good information for a professional, quality roof that will last the life of the shingle warranty. I roofed my home myself at age 64, two years ago and it's the last full roof I intend to do in my lifetime, so it needed to be done right and I saved about twelve thousand dollars. Last week I was watching the builder of three new homes on my street that will be valued just north of one million dollars each when they are sold. No drip edge / No ice dam / No metal valley flashings / No starter course of shingles / No underlayment / and I don't know what the stuff was that he squeezed around the stack vents. They just pneumatic nailed the shingles straight onto the 3/8" thick OSB strand board decking. The shingle manufacturer usually warranties the shingles for at least 25 years if it is installed according to their recommendations. There won't be any warranty payout for these roofs. I'll just chuckle a little when the new home owners are re-roofing in 10 years or less.
@@yemidaramola1887 The first hurdle in stripping off the old roof. I had three layers of singles, the first layer dating back to the 1930's. Plan and pray for a few days without rain to strip the roof and install the waterproof underlayment so you have a minimum waterproof roof before the real fun begins. A dumpster in the driveway is your best friend to dispose of all the debris. A cheap magnetic broom to pick up all the nails from your property is a wise investment. Mine, (1800 sq. ft.) took 5 days until completion but the savings equaled a very well paid week.
Instead of chuckling, why not tell the home owners what the roofer did and save them from additional problems. That would be the neighborly thing to do.
When my roof was replaced about 4 years ago, they used GAF shingles. They cut the starter shingle so the asphalt strip was near the bottom. That helped the shingle to stay down. better during heavy wind. I live in SC and although where I live I don't get hurricane winds but we do get some strong winds from the storms as they run up the coast. JS
Some areas building codes require drip edge to be under the under payment paper. If that's the case, simply paste the under payment at the edges with a good sealer. I do mine the way yours was done, but I paste the edges under each course of shingles at the eaves with an asphalt based sealer.Wind damage is then nullified due to driving wind and rain not being able to lift the edges. It is an easy and quick way to keep shingles where they are supposed to stay.
when you nail your architectural shingles mind the next layout so your nail doesn't end up under a seam on the next course, For instance if you have a seven inch staircase stagger, avoid nailing within three inches of the stagger , sink a nail on the end and three inches in then about eight inches from that for the next nail. @ @ @ @ @ @ Also there is no need to put so many nails in your starter as you will be nailing right on top of those nails for your first course. Just enough to hold it from moving before you put the first course over it.
I could write a novel in regards to how his methods are. I mean, every single bundle of shingles outlines the install expectations. I like how he spent time on chalking a line to supposedly get an overhang, in which I would have popped a line for a 1 " overhang for the starter, in which should have had the tabs cut off to enable the adhesive to be with the gutter apron for the first row of 3d's to have something to seal to apposed to now having approx 5" or so that the wind will easily get under, besides that, giving your starter the inch overhang right from the beginning, you could then simply bump your shingles off that overhang in the eves, but then you need to be aware that the starter is wide enough to clear your nail line on the 3d's as three tabs are different sizes... and a major reason for starter is to ensure your first shingle row has something protecting its seams underneath. Ill stop now, I guess its the perfectionist in me along with knowing customers pay a premium for our installs, and things like leaving on the old gutter apron disables the fact that you cant sell the homeowner a complete brand new roofing system, your installing a 30+ year laminate, but leaving on old gutter apron that my guess has been on for probably around 15-20 yrs would cause me to not sleep. And not to mention with a nail pattern like that, you look like your gonna have seams on top of/too close to nail heads, and that is a big no no.
i'm getting closer everyday to starting my own house. so back watching videos again of the ones I like. and yours is one of them oh and for some reason its not letting me like your videos. but I do
Every manufacturer requires cutting the tabs off your starter shingle for good reason ,the tar strip of yoir starter shingle is supposed to be at the gutter edge in order to seal down your 1st course of shingles, it's the same method for the entire perimeter edge ,even the gable edges require a starter strip cut in half with the glue strip right at the edge of the building.
I seen roofers use a light cement many use cheap shingles and the glue strips suck.Is this method also correct and is it rue cheap shingles glue strips in cold to hot climates do not hold up well?
IF THAT WERE CORRECT YOUD HAVE HUGE ISSUES EVERY TIME THERE WAS A LEAK, AND THERED BE A LEAK. WHERES THE WATER GETTING REDIRECTED TO IF THE TAR STRIPS GLUES TO THE ROOF. IT HAS NOWHERE TO GO BUT UP. FUCKING IDIOTS MAN
you have to cut the 3tab in half so the tar tabs are to help wind uplift on your first row (eve eadge) so 2 purposes stagerd drama and 3 tab cut in half and flip the half shingle so tar tabs are closest to dripeadge. tar extra tar tabs for wind uplift on first row.....
A jewel from Canada, masters of world’s smart homes I have seen from coast to coast in the true proud great white north. Coming from Shanon, worth a visit north that will humble Americans of high Canadian standards, no matter what you touch.
I have roofed for seven years and I did mostly tile roofs but a lot of shake and asphalt shingle roofs and re-roofs in between. I've gotta say that you're lucky with the amount of wind/sun that you have there but depending on the day, the application of that ice and water can go much differently. I have had days so hot that it's near impossible to get that ice and water shield on because it instantly sticks to everything it touches and then days so cool/cold and windy that you need to apply staples all along (just as you would for the tar paper) and pull the white sheet as you go, otherwise it will just take off on you.
It's so easy to see how the roofer is in his region! This is in the north. I used to live there, and this video would have been great. In Florida, you have to cement down the first row, and first set of shingles, and 6 nails are required for ALL shingles. Don't need the icedam, but 30# felt is a requirement or at least worth the extra 10 bucks! Shingles tacked down every 6 inches! That's a requirement! Nice touches like "If you live close to the beach, consider stainless roofing nails." I had a deck fall totally apart because it was built w/steel nails. But just watched a Bob Vila hometime, and I counted 6 violations. Ones that code enforcement around here would have sqauked! We love you Tool Man! We love you Bob, but if you are going countrywide, (as youtube is) be countrywide. Bayr P.S. Was I too critical?
To specify every code for every area world wide would be impossible ,none of use even know every corner of the globes code. Appreciate the comments however.
@@HouseImprovements More and more, hurricane force winds are everywhere! If there would have been a caveat for residents that are in wind prone areas, awe, whatever. Let them sucka's use this guide. This is 20 years old. Times, and codes have changed. "But I watched it on This Old House."
Thanks for the videos Shannon. One question. When you start your bottom row over the start row, shouldn't the first shingle be halved so the ends don't line up with the ends of the starter shingles?
+Timothy Wilson They need to be staggered yes. In our case the 3Tabs we used as starters were 3" shorter than the finish shingles so we kind if had that already. I should have mentioned it though, thanks for catching that.
I'm not a roofer but I have done 6 roofs in my life time . I never have cut the tabs off the shingles for the starter strip . Even up the sides I just reversed the shingle with tabs left on . No problem was ever had . Waste of time and materials to cut them off . Now for the plywood on top of the roof boards , why bother . Houses in my area were built in the 50's with boards and all of the roofs are fine . Last year I needed a new roof so I called in a roofer . Now I'm lazy to do it myself . Got a good price . When his guy's were taking off the old shingles they said that my roof needed plywood . Another $3000 on top of the $5200 for the job. All of the boards were fine . This is how some roofers will try to up the price on you so be careful . Told them I couldn't afford another $3000 so just put the new shingles on the roof . By the way those shingles require 6 nails per sheet . Glad to see that's what you were doing.. $3000 for plywood . They were looking for a sucker .LOL Yes they did a great job . I watched them the entire time they were doing the job .
If you cut of the tabs, the main point is the glue line that is mid shingle goes down to teh edge and holds the shingles in place better And it also means the first row up is not spaning two shingles which ads to wear from walking and general wear. I agree though that you can do it either way and never see the difference.
Henry Rodgers yes but if you trim the single and put the tar strip at the drip edge the first row of shingles adhesive from the Sun activates the star strip with seals it to the roof so there is no lifting
this is fine if the first row/brand of shingles has the glue strip on the inside /bottom of tile, otherwise theres nothing sealing that starter and first rom to the edge allowing aprox a 5 inch non sealed area all the way down the eves, enabling wind to easily lift that up. I have installed plenty s well with no need to trim tabs off depending on what brand it is having the tar strip on inner bottom, instead of a glue strip at the nail line. this situatin makes all the difference on how your going to run the starter, and first row.
I know some people going to say something . but shingles CO's say solid decking means if the is strip wood or plywood or OSB board is Fine. but they charged you for installation that's not right. know many companies doing this to get more money. or "giving you warranty" but a few years later not answer the Phone
Never did roofing or anything before wanted to save some money. This guy helped me and my roof looks amazing!

You explained how what he did is incorrect. The tar line should be at the drip edge to do its job.

@@franciscocharco2291Not flush with the edge, but an inch or 2 up from the edge is fine. The way it's done in the video is leaving 6-8 inches of shingle just able to flap in the wind.

It does really help learning new thing
all my work is guaranteed forever and I'm the only one that does it. my roof is patented. not all roofs are the same.
he nails in the wrong place so he is showing ppl how to do it wrong, on the west coast his roofs would leak bad. placement of nails is very important haha you are to dumb or have never roofed so you would not understand this hahaha
Teaching people how to do it wrong is not helping. Simply not using an actual starter strip will void the shingle warranty and cause the edge tabs to lift.
So much gatekeeping. Anyone that doesn't do things their way is an idiot that has no clue. It's tiresome.
Exactly
i enjoy how mr shannon do saftey. as a blk woman / homeowner. id like to do things myself and not pay someone because i like to save. thank you sir for being a blessing for people who choose to attack home projects.
Thanks Shannon, with all of your tutorial videos I have had the confidence to tackle jobs that I otherwise wouldn't attempt.
glad to hear
Thank you so much for your training us.
ive been roofing for 13 years now. watching these videos are still interesting. :] even though i just finished a roof this afternoon.. whats wrong with me lol
Rick O'Shea 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Same here. I love roofing!
well he hand nailed.....
mcbirdythebirdy123 haha nothing is wrong with u I worked on cars for a while and on remodeling kitchens houses and u always learn something new even if u are master splinter u still will learn something new😀👍😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏
Rick O'Shea He dosen't want to work himself out of a job. By the time he is finished...its time to reshingle it again...lol
Now THAT'S how you do an instructional video!! Thank you. Looking forward to binging on your other videos now.
I will be doing my roof myself for the first time and this video answered all of my questions. Very good
Faraz A Don’t sweat it... if all these pill heads can do it so can you! 😛🤢🤒" Boss can I get paid early so I can spend all my money on oxy!!"
Lol thank you very much
watching his videos have help me performed lots home improvement projects correctly that last, saving a lot of money in the process.
Old timer here. This Canuck really did a great job. Don’t agree with everything but this is a damned good video!
Glad to help.
The most I like about Shannon is his sincerity and to the point.
Just watched and noticed the same thing. His installation is wrong.
you are the most patient best teacher ever...so grateful for ya
Probably best teaching I've seen on these types of videos. Thank you!
I appreciate that.
i like to cut the shingle in half, leaving the tar strip on, and use that for my starter strip..that way the tar is on the bottom by the drip edge holding down the shingle by the edge of the roof
Correct. If this house ever has shingles broken and blown off the roof, the bottom course will definitely be the first to go.
I think its too important of a function to just not use a 4 seal-strip starter shingle. My roof isnt gonna fail at the edge.
@@garygwin1741 this is the correct way although most manufactures now suggest using an actual starter strip for their warranty
Sweet!!
This is definitely not the right way. He doesn't know nothing about Roofing. He best stick with carpenter work.
Excellent instruction. Clear, concise and comprehensive. Not easy to hit all 3!
Hi I'm a single mother trying to safe some money on my house. With your video I was able to follow your step on how to install shingles and I did it, if I have a chance I'll post before and after pic Thank You
Wonderful!
Post it, I was thinking of doing the same.
Great video, I really appreciate the way he explained all about roofing. Thanks
I like Shannon's videos, they are great for diy guys especially just learning new things. Thanks
Excellent Video Brother !
We will be starting our roofing project soon
I just finish my roofing plywood today, tomorrow will be this video class. Thanks
Ice water under felt over !
“... simply run under the metal and out into the gutter ...” soaking the unflashed facia edge beneath the metal in the process and resulting in the rot at the bottom edge that Bryan has repeatedly seen. The video does show the flashing going on top of the paper on the outside edges of the roof.
Your one heck of a guy! Thanks for all the videos you have put out. Been watching you for years.
Thanks for the good, clear instructions on how to get shingling the roof started right. Appreciate the time you have taken to produce this for us.
You are welcome!
as a professional roofer for 25 years i would recommend a bead of mastic around the perimeter of the roof as well as in between the starter strip and the first course.
Great video. I love how you explain the vital steps. Told me exactly what I need to know. Much appreciated.
very good video no drama just shows and explains everything very clearly .Watched all kinds of videos this one is very helpful
Thank you sir, such an intimidating project but you are breaking it down perfectly
+stormchaser86 Thank you, please keep watching. And also click the thumbs up icon on the video if you like it, that will help us!
Awesome video series . Should probably mention that the drip edge should not be installed flat against fascia board , but should stick out 1/2 to 3/4 in. Beyond the board so water does not find its way behind the gutter.
Bullshit
I'm sick of the idiots making negative comments . We all don't have to work by the same system. The main concern is being sure that we all follow the safety code so we don't have to worry about home inspectors etc... geesh!
Orta Blood amen!💯 every person is going to have their own specific way of doing it to their liking and at least he seems to take the criticism in stride
he's doing it wrong all you have to do is read manufacturer instructions, and he's not installing the shingles properly
Ken Huffman I hope u are in Europe and if not get the fuck back over there 😂haha
You are an IDIOT!
There's a thing of doing it right and he don't know that that's why you learn Roofing as a skill not as a scab
Good Video Shannon
i just installed the GAF WeatherGuard - ROLL was Very Heavy , is Mineral infused , the Plastic Backing is Very Slippery and the TEMP was HOT about 25c , my shed is 12x10
Roof Pitch 4/12 - When Hot the Backing is Tar Like - just as Sticky as RAT Trap Sticky Pads , i did it also on the Gable Ends with the GAF Blue Felt pad in the Center
You're seriously great at explaining things. Thanks so much for all the simple, understandable videos!
Great to watch - full of little gems of wisdom that are useful prior to starting a job. Thanks.
I like your stuff Shannon. roofing my shed tomorrow, needed to get the "downlow" on a proper roofing start. Cheers buddy Thanks agian.
Hey no problem Ivan, good luck on your roofing project.
Hey Ivan, how's that shed roof holding 4 years on?
I’m 17 years old been roofing for sum years now I’m the most efficient, fast, and correct roofer you’d ever see
RobDoesEverything I doubt it
Love watching these videos. Very in depth, and informative! Keep it up! 👍🏼
Shannon your videos are awesome. I haven't seen new ones lately. Greetings from California SF Bay Area
Shingles with no underlayment? That's the craziest thing I ever heard about roofing, since the shingles will be stuck tight to the wood.
I plan to do my roof soon enough, any advice, besides the solid stuff coming from Shannon?
@@yemidaramola1887 The first hurdle in stripping off the old roof. I had three layers of singles, the first layer dating back to the 1930's. Plan and pray for a few days without rain to strip the roof and install the waterproof underlayment so you have a minimum waterproof roof before the real fun begins. A dumpster in the driveway is your best friend to dispose of all the debris. A cheap magnetic broom to pick up all the nails from your property is a wise investment. Mine, (1800 sq. ft.) took 5 days until completion but the savings equaled a very well paid week.
@@chrisgraham2904 Thanks for the quick response. all noted!!
JS
3 tab shingles used as a starter on 30 year will have you cutting starter back to keep seams staggered.. use pro start with the G A F HDZ shingles ...
very good video, pointing out little details that can be important part of the project, thanks for share, and keep up the good work👍
+Joel Estrada Keep watching we have more videos on shingling to come this month.
“underlayment”, not “under payment”. 🙄
when you nail your architectural shingles mind the next layout so your nail doesn't end up under a seam on the next course, For instance if you have a seven inch staircase stagger, avoid nailing within three inches of the stagger , sink a nail on the end and three inches in then about eight inches from that for the next nail. @ @ @ @ @ @
Also there is no need to put so many nails in your starter as you will be nailing right on top of those nails for your first course. Just enough to hold it from moving before you put the first course over it.
good advice
I agree That is well said and is correct installation.
I am very proud of what you do. You doing a great job! Keep up the good work. I am going to share your work with many people.
You are the best teacher. Thank you.
i'm getting closer everyday to starting my own house. so back watching videos again of the ones I like. and yours is one of them oh and for some reason its not letting me like your videos. but I do
Try refreshing your page and liking again? Thanks for watching
@@HouseImprovementsI did and it let me like it
Every manufacturer requires cutting the tabs off your starter shingle for good reason ,the tar strip of yoir starter shingle is supposed to be at the gutter edge in order to seal down your 1st course of shingles, it's the same method for the entire perimeter edge ,even the gable edges require a starter strip cut in half with the glue strip right at the edge of the building.
FUCKING IDIOTS MAN
I totally agree with you, he is doing the starter strip the wrong way.
Novela no via de estanbul
you have to cut the 3tab in half so the tar tabs are to help wind uplift on your first row (eve eadge) so 2 purposes stagerd drama and 3 tab cut in half and flip the half shingle so tar tabs are closest to dripeadge. tar extra tar tabs for wind uplift on first row.....
A jewel from Canada, masters of world’s smart homes I have seen from coast to coast in the true proud great white north. Coming from Shanon, worth a visit north that will humble Americans of high Canadian standards, no matter what you touch.
Love the way u break it down👊
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO AS A SENIOR CITIZEN IT HELPS TO KNOW HOW TO PROPERLY INSTALL ROOFING..HOPEFULLY IT WILL ASSIST ME IN MY REPAIR JOB TODAY..
You’re so patient. Love your videos very informative
Thank you. The best video so far. I noticed a mistake or two, but I like that you explain and show clearly.
Too each their own bit starter strip isnt just another shingle, and i usually start with a half shingle first to avoid my seams matching up
So you obviously didn't watch the video
Great instruction. You have a good teaching ability. looking forward for your other videos. thank you. you have a gift.
Thank you for the great video!
Thank you so much for all the videos you do. Very very helpful. I don't see all the haters doing any educational videos. Lol. Have a great day.
Would love to share a beer with this man.
mmmmm .. cold beer sounds good!
I think he could probably handle a whole one all to himself.
hahah yeah I would buy him a beer but never share my beer😀👏👏👏🙂👏👏👏
toxicmocksyndrome 😂 junge si
Same here. I think we would get along. Takes pride in his work.
I just like the sound of his voice
I've been watching your content for years! Thanks for all the tips!
Thanks for watching!
Always thought you cut the tabs off for the starter and flipped it upside down so the seal is at the bottom.
Nice touches like "If you live close to the beach, consider stainless roofing nails."
I had a deck fall totally apart because it was built w/steel nails.
But just watched a Bob Vila hometime, and I counted 6 violations. Ones that code enforcement around here would have sqauked! We love you Tool Man! We love you Bob, but if you are going countrywide, (as youtube is) be countrywide.
Bayr
How about Bob updates the Video? Or has Al (don't flame me, I know Al was Home Improvement, but he needs more camera exposure)!
3 inches!!! 5 5/8 min :/
It's like listening to my grandpa when he explained how to do stuff. But with a Canadian drawl.... Good stuff.
I like to use the original starter strip . at the bottom. it has the tar strip to seal the first layer of shingles down . am I thinking right ???
Just started watching... always saftey first people. Now he has scaffold set, but no mention of safety. Cheers
