I find that roofing is a great way to instruct teenagers and really improve the neighborhood. What you do is you find the worst delinquent in the neighborhood and you hire him for $40 or $50 an hour and say you'll pay him if he completes the job with you. Then when he's nailing the ridge cap you push him off the roof.

I have worked in the home improvement & new construction field for about 40 years now and have never come across an individual who has the same level of expertise as shannon. This guy really knows what he is talking about and is completely thorough with explaining every itty bitty detail. Truly a great guy to learn the correct way to do many different task in many different trades. Great job Shannon. Oh and did I also mention that your videos are also top notch. Very clear in both audio and video. 👍👍👍👍👍

After watching these videos, our three boys and I decided to reshingle our home. We are new to this work. We completed it just before Hurricane Ian and so far she is seaworthy! Thank you Shannon for your helpfulness. May God bless you and keep you. May His face shine upon you and give you peace. By the way, the two teenage boys and I did most of the work and the investment was priceless!

One of the best how-to roofing videos out there. Happy to see he did not add a ridge vent on his home with that low pitch. Someone did that to the house I just recently bought with a similar pitch and it's been leaking water in. Too low of a pitch doesn't keep rain water out of those vents, so not looking forward to when I re-roof this house. Little anxious about how much damage will be underneath and the $$ to fix it all.

Just remember, do not put a nail where there will be a joint in the following course. Stay at least 4-5 inches away on low slopes and 2-3 inches on steep slopes. At 5:50 you are putting them in the joints! The water weeps in the joints eventually eating the head off and in time, as the tar in the shingle drys out around the shaft of the nail, it will start dripping. Usually in 2-5 years.

The construction materials are much better and the techniques and codes are substantailly better as well. I apprciate all of your help. The window looks great and the home owners association are no longer complaining after I successfully finished. I'm doing more roof work this weekend with gutter work. Thanks again for all of your help.

Since winter is coming I didn't find anyone. So, I have to call a friend of mine who is a roofer, and we along with a helper, did the job. For me, it was a heavy work to do, but it was rewarding, specially that my fried had just 2 days to help me, and the second day was raining. Watch where you put you nails! You do not want a nail within 3” of where two shingles butt side by side. The first shingle on his second course lands right on a nail. If this happens throw a dab of caulking or maybe a little piece of ice and water to cover it because it could possibly leak. Also snapping lines every five courses will save you lot of headaches. Great video though. You make it easy for most beginners to grasp the basics. Great vid!

There are some negative comment, yes. This video shows you how to shingle a roof ,maybe my nail placement is off in a few areas but I know there are no leaks as we had an over ordinary amount of rain this year and this is my home, no sign of leaks at all. Read your shingle manufactures suggested nail placement on the shingle package and follow that. Some do not like what I used for starter strips but in my area thats what pretty much everyone has done for years and believe me it gets windy here on the Saskatchewan prairies and I do not know that I have ever seen a roof start lifting and rip off right at the starter strip edge? It does not matter what you post you always get some" haters" but the funny thing is I have never seen one of them post their "right " video on You tube?

alright explanation why it will leak: when he installs a shingle he places a nail right where the two shingles above it butt up to eachother the rain will run in that space and eventually it's going to rust out that nail and cause a leak. you want those nail about 5"-6" inches away from that location.

I noticed this too. I just did my first roof and the instructions that came with my shingles say 1” from joints. I stayed probably about 1.5” away on all my shingles. Another thing when I had bought my house, the flashings on the roof all had nails on the bottom right and left corners which all leaked water. Just like Shannon here, the nails are too close to the corners and water will eventually get under the nails from water run off. Seems like I see a lot of people doing this. Otherwise great video showing the entire process...

Thanks very well done . Nice and simple easy to understand. I appreciate it. I've helped on a roof once but just did what my buddy asked. I'm a fabricator by trade so the concept was very easy. I just wanted to see the drip edge , I didn't remember putting the row of shingle upside down on his job . But I did that on my shed I just assumed there had to be something due to the open space in the slots of the the tabs. I'm using 3 tab . Just a little garden shed. But I want it right . So I got the idea about drip edge & the roof cap Thanks again.

  • @jasonbell5152
    @jasonbell5152 7 лет назад +6

Question: do you up-vote your own videos 1500 times?
The drip edge always goes on first, along all eaves and rakes for a gable roof, even on shitty OSB. This is done to enable the ice & water to do its job of shedding any water that gets under any shingles so the water can run over the drip edge into the gutter.
Never shoot a roofing nail mid-length through a full size shingle or partial where a nail will break on a seam. .That's guaranteed water coming in through the roof, unless caulk sealed. These shingles only need four evenly spaced nails.
If you have a 4-in-12 slope or shallower, ice&water the whole thing. No point hauling up a roll of felt, which nowadays is synthetic.
Starter strips should be half width, cut down the length. With laminated shingles, straight along the back seam. Never use full shingles for starter strips. Defeats the purpose of channeling water inward away from the rake edges and results in weak shingle adhesion at the eaves. A good gust will blow the eave shingles up.and pull the nails loose .
The caulking is totally good, best thing about the work. I would use clear. Black is an eyesore if you miss.
On any roofing job, start and finish every step before going on to the next. Drip edges till done; then ice&water; then starter strips, then shingles; then ridge. No leap frogging. No start, stop, start. Materials are heavy enough as is. .

I really love the videos you make. You're a great teacher and I think you do quality work. However, this video isn't on par with the quality of the rest of your videos. I'm afraid you didn't do a very good job installing this roof based on how your shingle seams are landing on nails. I'm a roofer for a living and those are to be avoided because they will leak. You might just be lucky though because the underlayment (being peel-and-stick) actually should be watertight enough to cover up those mistakes. Most people watching this video I suspect may not know that however and may assume that 15 or 30 pound roofing felt won't make a difference. Just based off of the quality of most of the work you do I would re-do this video or seriously address the nails being right underneath your seams.
Side note: I would have started from the bottom left corner being that you're right handed. The shingles should run a little farther into the gutter as well. Also on that pitch of roof you only need 4 nails per shingle. 6 nails won't hurt just really unnecessary unless you're in a high wind area. Most of the time the bundles the shingles come in explain all of that quite well.
Once again I have much respect for you and your work. You are a great teacher and hope that you make a response.

Pro tip: relearn EVERYTHING to do with shingling because this is 98% wrong!
-the first shingle you actually install has a seam nail. Nail pattern have to coincide with step patterns.
-nail between the tar strip and profile edge, NEVER in the tar strip
-your nails when using the gun are overdriven
    - never use anything less than 1 1/4" nails even with a nailer.
    - hook blades work plenty good cutting any type of shingle.
-minimum 1" overhang at the table.
And that's just within the first few minutes. Take a lesson from a real roofer before trying to pass on any further knowledge please
