I've made both versions. Both are good, but the version with the aging spiral is better. What would you guess would happen if you used 46 cask strength instead of regular cask strength?
You should never rest them funnel on the vessel you're pouring into.. the chance of creating a vapor lock and overflowing the funnel is high, especially with high flow rate liquids
Thanks for the feedback. I have DEFINITELY noticed this since. I dont funnel at all when I pour into sample bottles for this reason. I just pour carefully. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
I’m currently working on a riff of this recipe: 1:1:1 Maker’s 101, Maker’s 46 and Larceny. Added in a spiral as well. Should give me something around 96 proof. My wheelhouse is between 90-100 proof so we shall see
So the packaging says that the flavor won't change much after two weeks and I think this seems to be the case. I have gone longer than two weeka but have never noticed a huge difference. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
If u wanted to go upper shelf by mixing a larceny barrel proof and a few others to get that pappy profile even closer which direction would u go. Great video
I have since done this. Maker's Mark Fae-01(or any "01" wood finishing series really) and Larceny Barrel Proof with an oak aging spiral gives a close approximation to William Larue Weller! If you look through my videos you will see a lot more expirimentation! Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
If I can't find Makers Cast Strength do you think a regular Makers or Makers 46 would suffice for the Prudent Pappy? Are you using the Makers cast strength primarily for the proof? Thanks
Yeah, you need the proof. Maker's Cask strength can usually found atost larger liquor stores. They even have it at both Wal-Marts by me. Cheers buddy I hope that you find it 🥃
Thank you for watching! I got them on Amazon at the following link. Right now I have some in Port Wine, so i can eventually make some port aged bourbon. www.amazon.com/dp/B00R2JFODK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_80X0A5599P42EM23F77P?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I have had 10 and 12 year van winkle. I have also had a 15 year pappy van winkle. The one thing i noticed was a cherry finish. I also get a smooth creamy vanilla/caramel nose. I have tried the weller blends and the makers larceny blends. The last thing i tried and i didnt have to wait a month for the blend to finish mingling. I took a larceny barrel proof and put a two or three drops of limestone mixing water along with the syrup of luxardo cherries. I havent developed a great palate yet but to me it tasted a lot like the van winkle lot B. Plus i didnt have to sacrifice a weller of commit a portion of two bottles to one blend.
The best one I have made hands down is: One parts Larceny Barrel Proof to two parts Maker's Mark FAE-01 (but you could use BEP or BRT-01) and I let is rest in a bottle with a barrel aging spiral for about 3 weeks. Fantastic. Highly recommend you try that one. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
At this point, I was comparing it to Weller, which is the same mash bill and the same distillery. Pappy is just older Weller. I also didn't come up with the prudent pappy blend, that was someone who definitely had Pappy before. I will say, I have since had Pappy several times, and this is honestly very close. Like shockingly close. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
I've heard Weller 107 is really close to Pappy. So is Larceny. I wonder if, like Blanton's ( not that amazing stuff, very regular), was Pappy's really that good.
So I tried this a few weeks ago after reading about it on a website that gave it as an alternative to the original Poor Man’s Pappy mixture. So I went out and got a Makers Cast strength at 112 proof. I already had Larceny which I really enjoy. I mixed a 750 liter bottle with 60% Makers and 40% Larceny. It is a really good tasting mixture. Cheers!
Which Weller are you comparing C to? Special Reserve? Antique 107? or 12 year? Thanks for the experiment. I may even play around with adding Larceny BP, and/or Maker's 46 or Maker's 46 BP.
Ok so it has been a WHILE.... but if memory serves this one remined me of a higher proof weller 12. Honestly, prudent pappy is more comparable to Old Rip Van Winkle 10. It is so close. In fact in a blind flight, I prefered Prudent Pappy. Cheers buddy thanks for watching
Just tried this (1 week check in taste for both blends) … I have never had Pappy but these both taste awesome. At one week I’m picking up quite a bit of oak, I will chance another week with the spiral. Fingers crossed 🤞… thanks for the inspiration.
I have used two spirals before and it didn't ruin the project. It just gave it a deeper depth of charred oak, so I think it would work. Thank you for watching!
Love the episode and love the channel. I just did an initial 24 hr check on my first ever blend attempt (OGD114, Old Elk Wheated). Pretty oakey after 24 hrs, but feeling a little better after watching this video 😉 Keep up the content, Drinking Buddy 🫡
Would love to hear what you think of prudent pappy with an oak spiral a year later now that you've grown so much in your whiskey journey! Thinking about doing this myself! Would be awesome to see a video with spiral aged prudent pappy, Calumet 15, pappy 15 (or antique 107/old rip), and lastly barrel batch 30.
Interesting! I had to go look it up becuase I thought that one was the one with Wyoming wheated in it. And I was right (my memory usually isn't so trustworthy) but you are also right. It says wheaters from Kentucky and Wyoming. Cool! Alas I don't have it. But I might be able to do something similar to this for sure! Cheers buddy thanks for the suggestion!
@@yourdrinkingbuddy that would be great! Since I am about to do a barrel spiral and a poor man's blend. Now a year or so later would you do anything different with prudent pappy to make it closer to pappy 15? Different ratio, different whiskies, etc?
@Michael Kuhlmann i have done poor man's pappy (weller 12 and 107) and reverse prudent pappy (which ended up tasting like old fitz) (larceny bp and makers mark). But the standard is the closest I have found. I will buy some larceny today I guess. 🤷
So glad I found your channel. I was introduced to bourbon by a friend who collects and he had me drink flights of Weller. Full proof was my favorite and it is really hard to get. So enter this video. I have a bottle aging right now but I made a glass to tide me over and tease what I will taste in 2 weeks. Wow! this is nice. Cannot wait for the oak spiral and 2 weeks to add to this. Thank you.
@@yourdrinkingbuddy Cant wait. Hope to see more videos that explore why certain blends work and maybe teach principles of how to try your own blends. Maybe even a live stream where we all taste or blend together. I will watch whatever you publish. I find your comments informative and entertaining and easy to follow.
Sometimes when I go to sleep, I hear, "I'm your drinking buddy...AHH" in my head on a continual loop and I find deep tranquility...then I dream of Frankenstein whiskey. Excited to give this a try. Keep up the good work my Drinking Buddy.
I had about two fingers of Buffalo Trace left and one finger of Elijah Craig and decided to just drink them together and was surprised how well they tasted together compared to separately.
I have certainly blended a few things together and had great results. And blended a few things together and hated them lol. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
Thanks for the credit, Buddy! Glad you agree that Prudent is good, and so easy to make. I also like you took it a step further with the spiral. I will have to try that, too.

I’m late to the party here but awesome video and I just mixed the two bourbons and put an oak spiral in it. Now the tuff part; the wait. Thanks drinking buddy, I’m super excited to taste it in 2 weeks.
Wow u sure do swallow fast. I know, everyone has there own way. I like to hold til it starts to burn and experience the tingle and burn like my mouth is being electrocuted.
Generally I do. I like to hold it in till I feel a burn then do slow swallows. This allows me to pick up more notes. Sometimes I cut out how long I hold it in, because it is boring to watch me stand there making faces for 40 seconds lol. Cheers buddy thanks for watching 🥃
I've made both versions. Both are good, but the version with the aging spiral is better. What would you guess would happen if you used 46 cask strength instead of regular cask strength?
I have considered it. I just think the French oak would throw off the profile.
GREAT VIDEO!
Thanks for watching buddy 🥃
I think cask strength is good
I really like it. Delicious. I think it had to grow on me though.

Leave that mm cask strength to open up for about 10 minutes before you drink it
