EH Taylor Barrel Proof Rye Review, plus Who Distilled it!?
I think Southern Star Paragon cask strength wheated is alot better than 107 , easier to find and is around $69 👍💯😉
Amazing - Thank you!
@yourdrinkingbuddy how long did you age your Benchmark Full Proof with the aging spiral that ended up doing very well in the Stagg competition? We're replicating it at my house as my friend and I are both Stagg lovers. Won't be able to do quite as many as you did, but together we have 2 GTS and about 10 different Jrs to run the blind with, so we want to put your Full Proof in with those. Thanks!
Very educational, just subscribed.
Great video!
Big exception is Michter’s 10 Year. Better than the majority of bourbons and 94 proof.
I can’t stand when stores mark the price up or do those package basket deals so it doesn’t seem like you over paid as much
Definitely agree. The bundles are out of control.
Not buying Redwood Pipe dream anymore...not tasty IMO. it just drops off with the finish
That one isnt my favorite either. However I do like the cask strength version.
As with a lot of BT products, 107 at it’s msrp is a good bargain. A small mark-up makes it just ok; secondary hype and it’s totally overrated.
100% agree
Have you ever tried JD Bonded and Heaven Hill BIB 1:1. New to bourdan community inspired by your blends. This is to me is an amazing bananna desert blend.
@@JoeFresquez-w1m that sound really interesting!
This is why I love whiskey. I can absolutely love something that someone else thinks is sub par and I could care less about their opinion…cause let’s face it, that’s all it is. I do find it weird that so many people value others opinions of something so incredibly subjective, though.
@BaritoneFinwiggler very true. And I honestly do love it. Just found some other stuff to scratch my itch that day.
I'm picking up notes of pretentiousness. XD
Cheers
Yes! I prefer Full Proof over it. Especially if it's a store pick, no contest.
I can definitely see that. Picks of either are usually fantastic though.
Always stick with your gut instinct
Cheers buddy 🥃
I don't know if it's overrated but I'd like to find out!
I hope you do bud.
I find that most if not all BT labels are over rated. To low proof and to hard to find. I believe this is by design when 1 mash bill has so many names and are hyped so much.
When you consider their MSRP I would disagree. Their prices are very low. BUT they are far too often marked up far beyond their msrp. And they arent worth that at all.
@ my point is they are all the same. You got Benchmark , then BT, then ER, EH Taylor, Stagg, then the 2 in the antique collection. All from 1 mash bills age isn’t that different til you get into the antique collection. This is why they are hinted so much. You got to have each one on the shelf. If they drop a label or 2 they may be easier to find. I think BT is and will be in trouble either way all the fall off of the market. They borrowed so much for the expansion.
Sorry, but I have to call out the blasphemy! 😅 Once the stones start to fly, the fans tend to flee. I don't mind saying Weller Antique 107 is probably my all-around, non-complete unicorn favorite. I really enjoy wheaters. The proof point is about perfect and the flavor profile fits me to a T. I buy it at any opportunity I find it for $80 or less (usually around $55) and have been able to bunker several backups. I understand if you can't find it for less than the cost of a kidney, but you undoubtedly can find a multitude of other bottles that are unobtainable for me. That's okay. I just appreciate that there's a ton of great whiskey out there and we can all find multiple things we love. In five different blind tastings in the last 18 months, Antique 107 has finished first four times and second once against some tough competition. I just figured someone had to fall on the sword despite the results of this particular blind tasting. I enjoyed the video, YDB. Our palates don't align often but keep up the great content! 😆
@@JonBlankman it's not a unicorn if you are getting it at that price though. It's the people willing to pay $130+ for it that makes it that. And those are just ridiculous people. Not sorry.
Cheers bud! It's a great whiskey for sure and the price point makes it even better when you can find it.
You basically cant find 107 in Austin. I’ve never even tasted it. I found one bottle in Austin at a small old liquor store by my house…that store wants $199 for it. lol…No.
@milsruprifles I truly feel your pain. You should be able to enjoy a Weller Antique 107 at a reasonable price. I wish I could work a trade with you so you could enjoy a solid bourbon.
@milsurprifles if you want to try it, Whiskey Cake will definitely have it for a pour. Plus deviled eggs. So win-win.
I saw that Amador Chardonnay finish today for the first time. Not a big wine finish, so I passed.
@@Skwurm2297 it seriously drinks like chocolate chip cookie dough in the weirdest way.
I hunted it based on hype and gave it away when i tried it. lol not my thing.
@@StreetGlizzy not for everyone.
People overhyped this bottle, it’s decent but nothing to overpay for. I personally overpaid for it and regret it.
I am done over paying for anything at this point.
@ I feel you 100% brother. Prices need to drop for sure, it’s no longer enjoyable and even when you get those allocated bottles you nurse them in fear of never getting another.
I have one. Overpaid when I first started my Bourbon journey last year. IMHO, it's just OK and definitely overpriced by taters. SRP or bust.
Cheers, yeah I agree it’s definitely not worth a crazy markup.
I just killed a 107 tonight. I keep thinking about Blanton's. Every sip was this is Blanton's. My taste is not as deep as these guys but Blanton's.
I've never thought about those two together but I can see it.
As a guy who doesn’t like Weller that much or so I thought it seems to win every wheated blind I’ve had. By itself I’m not a big fan. It’s floral and I’m not a floral guy but after other wheated bourbons for me it turns into fruit juice. I usually start with something else then go to it.
@@roscoepcoltrane23 I 100% get this. Nearly all buffalo trace products blind really well if you compare them to similar items.
@@yourdrinkingbuddy I find that BT don’t blind all that well. Is why I believe they are over hyped cause they seem to fall in the middle in blinds. I also believe they make to many labels from singular mash bills. Weller is their Wheated mash bill as is all their pappy, and WL Weller in their antique series. All you got to do is look at the MSZrP of Weller 12 and pappy 12 there is a 100 dollar difference and they are the same.
I always just figured 107 was my favorite Weller but me and a buddy did a Weller blind over new years and our order was: 1. Full Proof; 2. Single (June 23); 3. 12 Year; 4. CYPB; 5. 107; 6. Special Reserve. So who know!
Interesting, that's a good blind!
Dry January over? A couple days early? Crazy that I recently had this very discussion with a neighbor. We both have been disappointed in the recent 107 release. Not talking store pick here, just standard 107. I remember really enjoying it and now, just blah. Could be that my palate has evolved and I keep enjoying better and better bourbon, but it might just be an inferior batch, who can know? Cheers DB
No this is an old one. I am currently super sick so dry January might be over late lol. Interesting thought. I hadn't considered that this could be a newer bottle and they have lost some quality.
@ get well soon pal
How dare you sully weller 107s name!
Cheers buddy 👍
Would you pay $190 for a Weller 107? When you can get a Blantons straight from the barrel for the same price
No way. I wouldnt pay more than retail for any weller bottles personally.
No.
I’ve tried or owned all 4 of the “more available” Weller bottles, as silly as it is to call them that. Other than FP, which I’ve only ever had as a pick and thought that pick was pretty bad, all the other Weller’s are best in category to me for the very narrow categories that I’d fit them into. OWA is the quintessential $50-70 wheated bourbon at a mid proof point. 12 is the quintessential wheated bourbon at a $60-70 price point that’s low proof, etc etc you get the idea. And because of that, I understand why they’re overrated. When you are marketed well and become what people think of as bourbon, they put you on a pedestal. Having owned an OWA, I’d never pay $100+ for it. But for retail? I’d never skip a chance to buy one! Someone else said overvalued might be a better word, that’s probably right. The market for all Weller bottles except SR is incredibly inflated
Honestly, I completely agree. Weller 12 especially is one of my favorites. When you consider the price they are supposed to be, there is nothing overrated about them.
🎉🎉🎉
Just go with Larceny barrel proof if you want a better value
That one isnt my jam but need to try a newer batch. They have been getting better.
Interesting time. I just bought a W107 pick this week. lol
Let me know what you think of it!
We've collected some really good wheaters over the last few years. I really want to do a battle Royale like you do at home. I just need to make sure to have the next few days off 😂. Cheers! P.S. I preder my Weller 12 2023 bottles to my Jack 12 batch 2 and Knob 12. I don't know what to say I like wheaters 🤷♂️.
I should do that in a video. I think i would prefer Jack 12 but who knows!
Unpopular opinion, but CYPB is actually my favorite Weller product. Throughout the bourbon journey though, Weller products all continue to be "fine".
The only problem is it varies wildly year to year. 2022 was magical, and 2023 was so bad, I didnt even try and get a 2024.
opened a bottle for championship game. delicious as ever. hope more don't like it more for me.
Cheers bud!
@@yourdrinkingbuddy🥃🥃🥃
I prefer Weller 107 over the other Wellers except for Full Proof Store Picks. I also prefer 107 store picks that are NCF as well. Just wish 107 was at its correct price of $50-60 and would be a true shelf product like SR is supposed to be.
Totally agree. I want the SR to be an actual shelf bottle then I can recommend it. But I can't when it is so hard to get.
Weller 107 literally smells and tastes like mildew to me. I like wheaters, but if I never had weller 107 again, it would be too soon.
Me too. I’m 50/50 on wheaters generally. I get distinct heavy note of moldy, wet, burnt wheat toast on this whiskey. I think it’s pretty vile.
That could seriously be cork taint. No joke.
@@yourdrinkingbuddy I get that weird funk on a lot of wheaters. It tends to dissipate with age though. I’ve found it in Weller SR, FP, OWA, Bardstown, and to a lesser degree in Old Rip 10. I have an OWA pick where it is not present though. I think it’s a “me” thing. It is not present in Weller 12, WLL, or the older Pappy’s.
I get a grass note on underaged wheaters. Add a bit of age and it goes away.
@@chriswright1160 its a youthy thing. Which is why you dont get it on the older stuff.
A good OWA store pick is 🔥
@@JimMatthews-nr6xc i agree completely.
It's good whiskey but the market needs a correction, it's not overrated but overvalued. What's in the bottle is worth $50-60 tops.
@@BigBadJerryRogers definitely agree. It SHOULD lose to a Maker's pick that costs $20 more.
I’ll be honest, weller 107 has never been my cup of tea. Love weller 12, but I could do without 107. I always get a harsh finish with it for whatever reason, just my palette.
@@garyskeel3236 i am a Weller 12 defender to the death. Love that bottle.
Yes indeed, esp compared to the Weller full proof, OWA is good just nothing special IMHO lots of better bottles out there..
@@lyodbraun agreed.
I feel it's the prices. If Weller 107 was still an attainable shelf bourbon for $50 it would still be great. It's just not a premium whiskey, it's a high middle tier whiskey. I loved Weller Special Reserve and 12, but I preferred a cheaper Maker's Mark Veterans Select far and away over Weller 107. Wheated, higher proof, shelf available, cheaper, more flavor.
you are exactly correct even maybe up to 70 bucks it's very very good but in my area of Colorado a vast wasteland for bourbon Weller 107 is gonna be 200 bucks sorry WT Rare Breed at 50 bucks will suit me. The hype and fomo on Weller is a joke
@@AppalachainGoldWhiskey great stuff if you find em at retail. That is basically weller in a nutshell.
At the Cascade Hollow Distillery you can try the water they use. It's filtered through limestone and high mineral mountain water table. It's noticeably different from the water you taste at Kentucky distilleries. I will agree Dickel does best with age. But I like Whiskey Brands that use the water from the area
@Forests0fFantasy i agree there for sure. Best to use what is by you. Jack uses similar limestone water was well.
@yourdrinkingbuddy I became a Dickel fan after I did their tour in 2019. That was after they had recently released the batch 1 13 year Bottled in Bond, my favorite bottle of theirs. Got to take a tour with the Master Distiller and I liked her philosophy of revamping the Dickel product line. She said, "We decided to be the better Jack Daniels, instead of the cheaper Jack Daniels". And if you look at Jack Daniels new products post 2019 you can see them following trends set by Dickel. Plus, the JD tour is for tourists, the Cascade Hollow tour is for enthusiasts, imo
Appreciate the simpsons reference..nice blind!
@@crazyA138 you'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel.
Lol. This guy is picky. I'm a sucker for a cool label on whiskey. No matter the price.
@tribulation138 well I have over 100 open whiskeys so I must not be too picky!
Hi Drinking Buddy ---- nice video! While they were a nice change of pace and a novelty for a short time, I think I'm done with Amburana and Maple finished whiskey, CHEERS!
I feel you! Now maple oak is something I enjoy, but a maple syrup barrel? Pass.
petroglyphs! I go to the ode to Isle, but need to be in the right mood. It is a gripping whisky! Thanks for your content!
