I'm proud to say I actually got to meet Kurt and shake his hand this morning...at the dentist's office of all places 🤣Didn't have much time to talk, but he's a real good guy and I'm thrilled I got to meet him and his son Kyle. Thank you Kurt for taking a little time to meet one of your biggest fans!

Poor man's Pappy is also hard for many to make because the Weller line is so hard to come by. Prudent Pappy is very good as well, which is Makers Mark cask strength and Larceny small batch mixed together. Can enhance it by adding an oak spiral to the mix. It really needs to sit for some time to really meld together once blended. Give it a try.

It takes a bit to mellow, is nice, but lacks the middle note of Lot B. The recipe I was given was 2:1 MMCS: Larceny 94

Given the oak adder, might it be a good idea to add some MM 46 CS into the blend?

    • @arnicolini

@@FakingANerve mix up a small amount and give it a try. I have also tried it the other, larceny barrel proof and regular makers, and caskl strength of both. Experiment with small volumes and have fun with it. One warning, I used 9 oz bottles to experiment and the new oak spiral was a bit over whelming in a short time.

This was such a great lineup. I purchased a bottle of 10 year old Rip van Winkle, Christmas Eve 2021. A year later, I scored a bottle of pappy van winkle 15. I tasted them side-by-side, and I couldn't tell the difference. They were so Close. In fact if I had to choose one, I would've gone with the 10 year old rip. The flavor profile of a bottle tends to get better after it's been open for a while. At the time my TV your old roof had been open for one year. I had just opened the PVW15.
I have a little Weller full proof left. I have a brand new bottle of Weller 12 year left. I'll be on the hunt for the antique Weller. It's going to be fun mixing them to see what I come up with. Great video.

I've had all of these, including the "poor man's" that I created using the same blend (60/40). My opinion is exactly the same as you guys. The blend is good, but doesn't beat the 10 or 15. It's probably about the same as the 12. That said, I prefer the OWA to the 10, 12, and the blend. I love the 15. Never had the 23.
Oops sorry, for those who haven't been drinking bourbon for a long time, "OWA" is Old Weller Antique, the original name of what is now called Antique 107. The OWA bottle I'm currently drinking is a 1-liter bottle with a price tag of $29.95.

Great post today, we have also made a VERY Poor man's Pappy using a Weller 6 year special reserve and a Weller 12 in the first batch and a Poor man's Pappy using Weller 107 and Weller 12 in our second batch. In my/our opinions each blend was slightly better than the Old Rip Van Winkle and Van Winkle. We didn't have any 15 year Pappy to compare to the our blends. But it was sure fun doing a blind tasting with what we had. Yes please each of you do your own blend to compare to a 15 Year Pappy.

Cellar age ranked at the bottom, michters 10 actually punched with GTS, 15, and 20, and the poor mans papppy edged out the Cellar aged and the 23. Just an incredible experience. VERY interesting that you both had a strong individual recollection of a specific tasting note on different Pappys before...(Strong cherry, and Green Apple) and are not picking them up now. I am going to chalk that up to neck pour of a new bottle, that usually tastes different, after it has had some time to open up with more oxygen in the bottle. I had a similar reaction to a Jack daniels single barrel select that tasted very tart when I opened it....and several months later ZERO tartness to it....all caramel, brown sugar and cherry the second time.....

10:05 I love fruitcake. I grew up eating it, and I buy one every year. It wouldn't hurt my feelings a-tall if it was available the whole year.
11:54 Also, all the Weller, Rip Van Winkle, and Pappy bottles are Buffalo Trace juice. So blending Wellers is much more likely to approximate Pappy Van Winkle than would blending another distillery's wheated bourbon.
15:01 I have some of those metallic ink silver pens (more like markers) that Pilot makes, and I use them to annotate my bottles. I put the date I bought it, where I got it, and the price before tax. You could do the same if you wanted to be able to remember those (or other) points down the road a piece. 🙂
