I have a 2009 white MacBook that I upgraded to SSD and El Capitan, and it's still going strong. I don't take it on the internet anymore, but other than that it does everything I need. I get to keep some old apps I love in action (Elements 9 for example), and the old version of MS Ofc. that I have works great. I've written several novels on this MacBook. I burn CDs using Liquid CD. The battery doesn't last long, though; about 2 hrs. I should maybe get a new one.
Same here - late 2009 white unibody. I got 14 years of use from it and even ran a sports marketing business from it! Replaced the hard drive with an SSD in 2020 and that's it - still works great and has been the best product that I ever bought - it made me money! A got a new 14" MacBook Pro a few months ago and yep, it's PERFECTION but that old MacBook sure was a classy machine. The screen still looks decent and the whole thing still runs smoothly.

I still have mine bought new in 2002, sorry I just realized it's an iBook 12". It has the older charging port, non magsafe, and it's not charging well unfortunately but the machine was working the last time I powered it. I am now using my good old MacBook Pro from mid 2012 (bought Apple refurbished) plugged to an external display cause the screen backlight is out, except that, it's working ok with 16Go Ram and an SSD for the system and apps. I will probably put a newer OS than Catalina via a patcher. And I just realized that it is a 10 years period between these two laptops so maybe the next one should be a machine Fromm 2022. 😉
Incredible deal! I owned this exact model years ago and loved it. Not to be "that guy," but the X in Mac OS X is the Roman numeral 10, so it's "OS ten" rather than "OS ex."
1:24 I kinda remember that’s what those machines sounded like when you booted them. I’m pretty sure it was because the OS was checking the drive for a boot disc.
The issue with installing older versions of OS X is that the install package is signed with a certificate which has since expired. You can open the Terminal from inside of the OS X Utilities screen, use the UNIX 'date' command to set the date back to a time in the past and it will install. Works with several versions of Mac OS.
A very amazing deal on a solid old MacBook. I have one that I retired about 4 years ago, but I keep it around because it will still boot up and happily play music and DVDs is called upon. Plus I liked the white MacBook thing since the g3 iBook which was my first Mac. I'm now running a 15inch mid 2015 MBP Sonoma and it is a dream to use.
I'd try to seal that crack with some UV resin before it spreads. Spray some contact cleaner in the ports and disc drive maybe that will fix the rattling noises.
The black version of this is still my favorite laptop of all time. I recently bought a 15" m2 air and it's almost exactly the same width and depth as this white macbook, but the entire thing is about as thin as the just the screen portion!
I found this same MacBook in the trash at my job. I wiped it down real good, upgraded the memory from 2GB to 8GB & upgraded the HDD to an SSD. It's a good backup machine for general tasks
Yea buddy I just subscribed too I've been wondering what to do with the 2 laptops I got for free 1 is a MacBook like this the other is a slightly newer pro
The leading edge of the top case always cracked on these because of a design defect - the standoffs for the screen touch an unreinforced part of the top case, so it cracks right underneath those on both sides. Since it's Apple, they never acknowledged they did anything wrong. A common fix was to fit white rubber feet on the corners of the screen so that it no longer depended on those standoffs.
There's workarounds to run 64 bit Linux on there . most people think if its a model with 32 bit efi , its screwed . that's mostly only in terms of osx not being upgradable but you can run full newer Linux.

Very cool. The black version of this was our third laptop and it saw a lot of use before we realized its difficulty with external monitors and replaced it. I hope the family I passed it along to was able to make use of it.
I got the black version of that MacBook for free. Guy said it didn’t work. It’s fine, just reinstalled the MacOS, stole some RAM from an old HP notebook and maxed it out at 6GB.
I’ve still got one of these, immaculate, ram upgraded and SSD installed - from what I remember! Also in original packaging and box. Battery was replaced though as original had died. Just shoved it up in the loft.
I still have a pristine white polycarbonate plastic body 13" MacBook - mid 2009) model (number: A2281 and its Apple identifier: MacBook5,2) among my other Apple computers. Even though Apple only stated its Intel Core 2 Duo (P7450) Penryn processor could only use a maximum of 4.0 GB of PC2-6400 (88 MHz) of DDR@ SO-DIMM of ram memory, in actuality that processor could use 6.0 GB - which I upgraded to along the way. I also upgraded its 500 GB hard rive to a "enterprise grade" OWC SSD. The nice thing about this particular MacBook is that it was so easy to upgrade its memory and hard rive. Apple even detailed how to perform those upgrade operations in its owner's manual. This 15 year old laptop certainly proved that old adage that Apple hardware "just lasts".
I use a 2006 macbook for car diagnostics. They are way cheaper than equivalent windows laptop of the era and they work beautifully for that purpose, nice and robust, not to mention multitouch trackpad. Also you can buy brand new batteries on the cheap and upgrade ram and put ssd inside without even opening it. They are being slept on for that purpose as a car diagnostics tool
This was my first Mac ever. Same Model from 2007. I needed Safari to test something and since then use Mac for all my work. The keys obviously turned yellow after a while, but what was worse was the battery dying. Back then you could still by off-brand replacements and it worked, but the battery life wasn't great and the entire thing is heavy. Looking at it now, i see the little IR-Receiver at the front which reminds me off that small "Apple Remote" you could use to play videos, control iTunes and navigate DVDs.. fun times.
Fantastic product! We always have to pay a little more for Apple products, but without question it's worth it in the end. Other computers/laptops that I've had in the past (non-Apple ones) start to "decay" in about 6 to 8 months. I had this very same laptop presented in the video--and it literally never stopped working. The software simply outdated the hardware, and I couldn't download and upgrade to the newest operating systems. I couldn't use common web browers, so I had to let it go. But overall, it really was a great laptop.
It kind of went downhill from there. Very beautiful macbbook, with ports and dvd drive, macsafe, sleeping led light. Also the os really feels more apple like than todays versions. makes me a bit sad and nostalgic.
I STILL use the probably the exact same model (it was bought new, from Apple long time ago) daily, as lossless music server. It runs on Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8). It's used mostly for running iTunes with a lot of hi-res music files. It's used with Apogee Duet, connected to AV receiver in living room. I upgraded the internal hard drive to 2TB HD (not SSD, as it was a bit overkill for type of usage), and it works fine still, but sometimes keyboard stops working (probably from overheating from motherboard!). It has optical input and output (can receive / send audio stream up to 24 bit 96KHz), so if you have modern AV receiver, you can feed digital audio out to it. I use Duet, because I already had it and I found Duet sound a bit better than using digital audio out to my receiver. Oh iTunes' file sharing still works with Macs with newer Mac OS X.
I brought a windows netbook for £10 no charger. I had a spare charger. I remember connecting the power cable and waiting few minutes thinking I brought a broke netbook. But, it charge up for me. Only downside was it was windows 10 netbook.
I have one of these with a 64 bit core2duo. i am very fond of this specific computer, the mileage i got out of mine was crazy. The one i own was my moms computer when it was new, then a family computer then handed down to my sister who gave it to me years later. Its kinda a pain but if you search around online there are people who have installed modern 64bit os to them. i have successfully run both windows 10 64 bit and various versions of ubuntu 64 bit. In fact this was my main computer from 2018 to 2022 i used for things like watching youtube and playing older games. Not the best experience, but if your willing to go thru the effort it will work and youll have some fun along the way.
I use all Apple. I just bought a used Dell, Chrome OS. A regular beater. Gonna download Linux and have some fun. Play store will be good as well. Everyone needs a Beater.
Sir try once the macbook 2017 and 2019 laptops i want to see it ,iam not forcing ,when the deals are good then please show use the magic of those laptops please ,and prior to 2013 or 2010 there are mac book products that deals with change of ram and even processor( i think),please🙏
my first ever mac was this model back in 2008-2009.... actually i liked it very much except maybe screen resolution. never had issues with plastic edge on the topcase
Nightly 55. Nightly 55. Nightly 55. Jazzny and Wicknix and collaborating as we speak on something and Wicknix has already shoehorned Nightly 55's guts into Interweb's chrome, so maybe the next version of Interweb will be a Nightly 55/Interweb hybrid. Edit: Nightly 55 is now Interweb. You heard right, Wicknix has agreed to let Jazzy "re brand" Nightly 55 as the new and improved Interweb.
Ha! I had one of these and it was super strong back in the day! It was even faster than my Desktop Mac at the time. Eventually gave it to my then step-son for gaming; it did run games even just 6 years ago! But then it locked out because of the OS updates. I have no idea what happened to it. Probably sadly ended up in a dump somewhere. RIP.
I got one for my mon who only uses an office suite and light web browsing. I installed a new SSD, 2 GB of extra RAM, Linux Mint on it and it runs better than new.
One of the things this proves is that developers have gotten lazy AF. I had a high end pc laptop around that time and it ran like butter, even AAA games with the mobile GPU... But I doubt windows 11 would do anything but chug like an elderly marathon runner on it... Moore's law was killed by Dev laziness
did i just see you take out the battery with just 1 screw wow with my 2012-2013 macbook pro i gotta take out like 5 or 10 screws to just take out the battery and ram
I think I buy one for myself. It's definitely an good alternative to these shitty tablets and it does basic tasks just fine. I previously thought about buying an old iMac because this things are really cheap and have a beautiful design to slap Linux on it and using it as a basic workstation. I'm not a fan of Apple but the design of their hardware is mostly nice.
same here! nothing compares to Apple's hardware and software cohesion, closest thing for me is my Razer Blade but even then, I'm lacking certain features like airdrop!
finding new batteries for these older machines are a challenge! third party ones never last long and the original ones are long gone because of how old the machine is!
Linux mint on mine no problem, but 32 bit version as 64 bit stopped. No big deal. Just changed to lmde as its the only 32 bit from mint now that gets updates.
What a deal

Windows 10 netbook are still useful in a lot of ways!
An ssd and 4GB it’s plenty usable! Just unfortunate it can’t support anything later than osx lion
I use all Apple. I just bought a used Dell, Chrome OS. A regular beater. Gonna download Linux and have some fun. Play store will be good as well. Everyone needs a Beater.
I personally use both, my razer blade 15 has been tremendously reliable
Sir try once the macbook 2017 and 2019 laptops i want to see it ,iam not forcing ,when the deals are good then please show use the magic of those laptops please ,and prior to 2013 or 2010 there are mac book products that deals with change of ram and even processor( i think),please🙏
my first ever mac was this model back in 2008-2009.... actually i liked it very much except maybe screen resolution. never had issues with plastic edge on the topcase
Upgrade the RAM to 4GB and the hard drive to an SSD. The performance will skyrocket.
If you keep searching you can get a 0.99 USD Macbook, I have some in the past and still getting those because after a cleaning and SSD I sell them
Nightly 55. Nightly 55.
RIP.
Nice
I just bought the black version a while back and it was in mint condition at 99 quid
that's pretty cool!
I miss the smell of the plastic. Mine kept its wonderfull smell for over a year.
Ha this was my first ever mac I got in middle school 😂 just seeing that boot screen got me😢
Nostalgia hits for sure!
Remember repairing these units. This laptop can get disgustingly dirty if you don't take care of it.
100% it’s important to do basic maintenance for longevity
@@cynonexus Yeah, you’re 100% correct but tell that to the average user. Good luck with that 😆
You should check out the black version too 😎
Hahaha I made a video on one! I love it!
Glad you got some views on this my friend!!
Thank you! Hard at work! More to come
its s shame that Spotify no longer works, i have the black version of this exact laptop and had working Spotify just a couple of months ago
I know right? I used to run it with a 2009 macbook running El Capitan but even that is axed out
OMG So Expensive❤
Very!
With an SSD in it and upgraded RAM this can be very fast.
Awesome video I liked it a lot :)
Glad you liked it
I got one for my mon who only uses an office suite and light web browsing. I installed a new SSD, 2 GB of extra RAM, Linux Mint on it and it runs better than new.
A classic model.
Indeed!
After watching this video I went straight on eBay and bought one on eBay for £15, no charger but hoping my 2012 works.
2012 is so much more usable than this one! Good luck!
You should buy as many as you can clean them up, put on games of that era and sell them for $100..
When the price is 3 dollars
American:CHEAP!
me: *remember that my country currency fell and 3 dollar is expensive*
My first Macbook is the same as this.. I bought it in 2013 and sold it 3 yrs later for $250
The x is a Roman numeral which translates to our number 10
This was my first macbook.
One of the things this proves is that developers have gotten lazy AF. I had a high end pc laptop around that time and it ran like butter, even AAA games with the mobile GPU... But I doubt windows 11 would do anything but chug like an elderly marathon runner on it... Moore's law was killed by Dev laziness
i am fixated on the function key which is reallt really dirty
I had one back 08 in the military my friend punch a hole in my friend😂. We had spilled beer on it. We did recycle it.
That’s crazy 😂
Phenomenal video! 😊
thank you!
Hey so the best browser for that laptop is Chromium Legacy on 10.7.5. Its fully updated.
I’ll check it out!
Probably faster than my schools Chromebooks
The best alternative too
This was the first Mac what I see.
did i just see you take out the battery with just 1 screw wow with my 2012-2013 macbook pro i gotta take out like 5 or 10 screws to just take out the battery and ram
100% a lot better but apple’s excuse was they were able to increase the battery life by double because of the closed design
Well, I buy it. I love vintage apple shit. ❤️
I still have a MacBook from this era on the shelf. One of the keys went bad - any ideas on how to fix it?
There’s a lot of replacement top keyboard, it’s actually very easy to replace on the pre unibody models like this one
Bro damn that shit looks so good for its time. Looks like the ROG Zephyrus
Still very sleek looking design!
Great video!!
I still have my Power Book G1 at the end of December 2004 , but I would need a new battery. Where can I find that?
finding new batteries for these older machines are a challenge! third party ones never last long and the original ones are long gone because of how old the machine is!
@@cynonexus December 2004
new battery. SSD. more RAM. and then you can play Diablo 2 with ease
Maybe you should consider seeing a dermatologist too, if your hands start itching touching dust. You may have some weird sensivity...
I still have and use this computer lol
I would love to see how well linux runs on it!
Which Linux will you be installing on it?
Linux mint on mine no problem, but 32 bit version as 64 bit stopped. No big deal. Just changed to lmde as its the only 32 bit from mint now that gets updates.
OSX translates to os 10 the x is a Roman numeral
