Your approach is so solid - I think I'm going to buy my third kit and just follow your lead. Nobody does it like you do bro. You are the Jimi Hendrix of scale modelers!
Oh wow... That opening scene from ST:TMP always looks awesome. I've seen it a hundred times, and it still blows me away. Especially on the big screen... Yeah, I'm old, I was there when the movie came out. I'm speaking from the future, as this video is from June, 2019, but very nice work, as always, Boyd.
My favourite ever Star Trek Model. You’ve really done this justice. I could happily make several, a more inaccurate but seemingly screen accurate dark drab grey with nice pinkish highlights - like some old publicity shots, and the brilliant Cronos One from The Undiscovered Country.
The lighting turned out nice! BTW, appreciate the in-depth explanations in spite of the EXTREME RUDENESS one member of the peanut gallery, Mr. Obsolete-Macs. You run this channel your way, Boyd. I think we learn more when the time is taken to explain some things. I'm not a mind reader myself and these are some complicated model kits. This one looks nice so far, by far the best Klingon kit they seem to have out there.
I am so glad to see you used from craft paints! I have been using them for years and some of the other modelers out there are very negative about using them, but used right, there are so many colors available :)
I Think it is cool, that you share your work with us, but for me personal i miss the style of your old Videos where you share the building with us.... i loved wathing you work and your way to Deal with stuff... you gave tips and Tricks and i loved it... Love your work still and watch your Videos and i am happy that you finally pull out some stuff on RUclips again, but i would love to See you a bit more working... Kind regards from the baltic sea in germany...
Great work as usual Boyd I just got this model for Christmas but I've sattar back with my 1:350 refit. as a note you may be interested in when you're talking about the top of the boldest section at the end of the strong neck oh actually the large oval shaped piece is the bridge the tower with the red lights in it is the continuous sensor array I've got the official blueprints that came out after they release the motion picture that has the blueprints for the katanga and it's bridge and it shows that the tower is the sensor array that's why it's red and the big oval piece is actually the bridge just thought you might like to know that. Awesome work as usual enjoyed the video.
The filming miniatures for the movie were colored similarly, but under the high contrast of the studio lights, the colors were washed out. Similarly, the TIE Fighters in the first Star Wars movie were blue, but appeared gray in the first movie.
Looking real good Boyd, especially the close up views at the end, you should maybe do a few more of those, it helps to see the finer details. I can’t say as I noticed all the intricate patterning of tiny windows on the movie model, they really help to give the ship size!
Hello Boyd, its looking good and i look forward to seeing more soon. Just thought i would tell you that paragrafix do two photoetch sets for the 350 k'tinga. One covers the shuttle bay etc and the other has a selection of impulse engine grills and other parts. I got both for my k'tinga and i think the impulse engine grills are a must. Anyway enjoy your build sir.
You did well to avoid the lighting kit's photoetch for the windows. The windows on the brass do not match those of the plastic parts, and it fits awkwardly on the plastic because it's not only curved along the equator of the bulb, but also along the vertical axis as well. I've discussed this problem in forums and others have had the same problem with the photoetch. Some who are using the lighting kit have decided not to use the photoetch for the windows because they're a PITA. I also got this kit from Jerry, but my progress has stagnated due to the mess that this photoetch has created. I know he was hoping I could get mine done in a fairly short time, but the brass has become a bit of a headache and my motivation has been depleted.
@@TrekWorks Well, I have no choice but to use the PE now, because the plastic underneath it is no good. For the PE to work, you must drill out large enough holes in the plastic so as not to hinder the light from shining through. So I used my rotary tool to drill out the holes. However, the PE windows do not match those of on the corresponding plastic parts, so I had to drill out even more plastic. It weakened the thin shreds of plastic to the point that I lost some plastic. Some of the plastic windows were completely obscured by the PE band, while the PE band had windows that were not represented in the plastic. To make it worse, the PE strip is just barely too small to cover the parts that it needs to be attached to. It's caused bad gaps and I'm having to attach styrene strips to the PE band to try to fill them in, as well as use black putty. I've been uploading videos of my process on this kit as well. You can see what I'm talking about in the most recent K'Tinga video on my channel. Any bit of advice would be appreciated. Several of the other PE set parts are smaller than the corresponding plastic parts they are meant to replace, so I've come up with some hybrid parts. Before this model, I've never used such a large PE part before, and least of all not one that wraps around a curved surface. Some suggested annealing the metal that wraps around the bulb, but Jerry recommended not doing so. He offered to send me the kit because I take the time to show the entire build process on kits, mistakes and all. Unfortunately, I've since learned that this kit doesn't come together as easily as the guy on the AST forum led everyone to believe, and that Trek modelers can be some of the worst critics on RUclips. Oh and one last thing---this kit has 5mm holes for the engines, however the lighting kit gives you 3mm LEDs instead. I do applaud PL's effort in releasing a lighting kit+PE set, but it's a mess and wasn't well thought-out.
Great update - the model is really shaping up nicely, and I love your paint narration. Say ... does the Klingon cruiser design remind anyone else of the cobra-head flying machines from The War of the Worlds (1953)?
Hi, great work. Looking at the paint job for inspiration on my model. I know you said you hand painted the front with a magnifying glass but what size/style brush were you using? Did you have to do a couple of coats on each little section to cover green coming through? Many thanks looks amazing!
It's kinda interesting that in the first new live-action Trek after the series ended....the first thing we see is not the Enterprise, it's those Klingon ships.
Very nice work, Boyd! As nice as this kit is, I have a hard time believing it’s actually 1/350 scale. The proportions in general and the windows in particular appear too small when compared to the 1/350 Enterprise. Still, it’ll look fantastic when completed.
Hi Boyd, Great job as always! How do you like the Duplicolor Spray Matte Clear 13:29 How would you describe the sheen? Is it the same or similar sheen as the Duplicolor Matte clear (BSP300) you were using from the quart can? Thanks!
Boyd, Great work. I love how you're doing your own lighting instead of buying the lighting kit. Love the colors. BTW, to get off subject, did you finish the Star Destroyer?
Loving this build, Boyd! Looks great. This will always be my favorite Klingon ship! But I'm wondering if there is any structural difference between the standard K'Tinga we see in the Motion Picture and Kronos One from Undiscovered Country? It seems to me that every time we see a model in the movies they were always fiddling with them and there were slight differences. I don't know whether it was to simulate the passage of time with the models and the various refits and overhauls the ships might have gone through over the years or just to make them look cooler in the eyes of the actual production team. But they're there. I'm thinking I'd like to build one of these and make it into Kronos One. Any info you have on this, Boyd would be very appreciated.
There isn't a commercially available kit of that ship that I"m aware of that's still in production. MPC did one but it wasn't very good and it's LONG out of production. People that got anything good out of that kit ended up heavily modifying it far more than you see done with most AMT/ERTL USS Enterprise kits. There was a guy who did a nice Cygnus but it was scratch built with 3-D parts from Shapeways and I bet THAT set him back a bit!
@@AvengerII There was a studio scale kit available for awhile on Shapeways. Built out it's about 11 feet long! Anyway, it would be great if someone produced a accurate kit at about 3 feet. I'd surely want one :)
@@TrekWorks I think the Shapeways kit is what I saw online. It's about the length of an average wall in a house! Someone else also had a build of the MPC kit but he cut out all the space between the gridwork and laid in transparent sheet plastic underneath the lattice/gridwork and lit his. His modification looked nice but it pointed out that at that size, sheet styrene wasn't going to cut it without reinforcement! The gridwork was just TOO thin and fragile to hold up on its own. Basically, he built a transparent inner box of plastic and glowed the remaining original model to this. The Shapeways model looked better but the modded MPC kit was a reasonable rep of the Cygnus shooting miniature, too. The original Cygnus shooting model I heard was so fragile that it shattered during shipping (on a train?). The robots and Palomino spacecraft survived. They've displayed those a few times over the years at the backstage Disney Tours in Orlando and probably in Disneyland. I know for sure I've seen costumes from the Rocketeer and one of the Nautilus (1954) shooting miniatures at Disney World.
@@AvengerII well let's not kid each other the cygnus was crushed like an eggshell when it went into the black hole but I never knew that the model was wrecked in shipping. Wow!
@@mikegallant811 It was a fragile model and wasn't handled well. I'm amazed the large shooting miniatures for the first two versions of the Starship Enterprise have survived!

He's making some happy little starships! 😀

The craft paints are working great for the paneling work. Now some more colors to make for the wings.
