Remember, if you're weirded out by the long neck: You can't see any of that weakpoint when this thing is coming at you for an attack run, so any Klingon Captain knows they better destroy you on the first pass!
Its not as if Starfleet vessels don't have their own massive and glaring weakpoint, by putting the bridge in an exposed position, dead-centre on top of the saucer section, like a bullseye for any attacking vessel coming in from above
i've often figured that Klingons *really* are into the whole battle honors thing for their ships, and a ship that has a long history of battle and victory is more prestigious to serve on than a newer, less experienced hull. so basically they'll refit and rebuild for as long as possible to keep a ship in service, and don't retire ships when they get old, the way most other races do, instead only retiring one if the ship suffered a string of particularly dishonorable events. it would be more likely that such aging ships would be destroyed valiantly in battle, which klingons would see as an honorable end.
Everybody talking about how the ship has a sombrero, while me, as a Brazilian, am laughing that the ship's name is slang for "bad smell" in Portuguese.
Haha! "Bad smell" is what happens on the bridge of an enemy ship when the K'Tinga decloaks right in front of them with its torpedo launcher already lit up.
Well, in the Enterprise episode Sleeping Dogs, in which humans step onto a Klingon ship for the first time, it is revealed that their ships do indeed have a bad smell. So that's kind of fitting.
Only the Bird of Prey is a more iconic ship. The updated hull that we first saw in ST: The Motion Picture is still phenomenal today, and a worthy counterpart to the Constitution Refit
Ironically the ship designers for Star Trek III were told to build a new Romulan Bird of Prey and it wasn't till after the model was created that Klingon's were going to be used as the protagonists.
actually, it has 12 disruptors (1:26 for reference for most of these): -2 under the brim of the 'Hat' -(2) 1 either side the base of the neck (near the hull on the top, those two white dots) -(2) 1 on the front top corner of each pylon (!:36) -(2) 1 under each 'shoulder' as bulges -(2) 1 on the front of each warp nacelle (has protective doors in front of each nacelle -(2) 1 either side of the engineering/shuttle bay on the top (white dots) also the forward torpedo launder can be configured as a red heavy disruptor (beam, 2:55) just some stuff people dont really know about this ship otherwise great video!
Thanks for this! The D6/D7/K'Tinga are my favorite _looking_ starships. Not just Klingon, nor even Star Trek, but across the board. And as a fan of SFB, my absolute favorite cruiser squadron to fly is a D7C, D7, and a D6D.
Great video, and review! In the game "Starfleet Command", I called my D-7 the "Event Horizon", as nothing gets past that (not a reflection on how the crew was treated).
More like 'build on strength' it's their cornerstone. It hampers them is someways. It's why you always see a Vor'cha whenever the Imperial Fleet has to do something outside military application. Hard to conduct any kind of surveying for colonies on a B'rel. But it does make them absolute beaters when dealing with military applications.
Until I saw this video I didn't know those 3 Klingon ships seen at the beginning of Star Trek The Motion Picture were of a variant of the class seen in the T.O.S. series that the K'Tinga class is an upgraded version of the old D7 class and even though they were probably near a century old by the time newer classes of Klingon ships that came into service the K'Tinga class is still an impressive design.
Many sponsored segments are praised for being funny and entertaining on their own, but this video's sponsored segment is among the first, if not THE first, that actually make me want to check a product out. If my gaming backlog wasn't already stupidly large I'd probably be ogling its steam page or website right now, kudos to you!
Man can you imagine what it would have been like if the Klingon ship stolen by Kirk and the others at the end of Star Trek 3:The Search for Spock had been a K'Tinga Class instead of the B'Rel Class Bird of Prey now that would have been awesome to see Kirk and the others sitting on the bridge of a K'Tinga Class Battle Cruiser.
D-7A k't'agga (Painbringer) used during the Four Years War D-7C k't'kara (Bringer of Destiny) used during TOS era D-7M k't'inga (Bringer of Destruction) movie era, first to have Photon Torpedoes D-7S k't'mara (Bringer of Justice) same as the D-7M but with a cloaking device Per the Klingon Ship Recognition Manual
According to the updated canon, the K'T'Inga is supposed to be quite a bit larger than the D7. Also when comparing the Eaglemoss models of both ships, I found that the dimensions and shapes are not exactly identical. The D7 is more sturdy, its "head" is larger but its warp nacelles are smaller in relation to the overall size of the ship than on the K'T'inga.
I think this ship is my favorite Klingon vessel. I mainly like it because it's not those weird shades of green that everything else is it's distinguished and to me it just looks powerful
How about that. Gavitational lensing is real and can be used to "cloak". Anazing how much of S T's technology is theorectically possible, and just outside our current technological grasp. Warp bubbles, cloaking and 3d printing, ordering a meal and food is replicated. Onboard repairs. Medical issues all possible with 3D printing. Would be interesting to see aerospace engineers and spacecraft designers take a serious look at some of the S.T. ship designs. Glory to you and your house.
That's a flashback from the Voyager episode "Flashback" taking place during the events of Star Trek VI. The Excelsior-class ship actually is the USS Excelsior, under the command of Captain Sulu en route to Qo'noS, in an unauthorized attempt to rescue Kirk and McCoy. She was intercepted by a Klingon battle cruiser under the command of Captain Kang.
That was great. I would have said the K'Tinga Class was more of an Improved D-7 (D-7a?) rather than a whole new class. Either way, Matt Jefferies, you are a genius.
The long neck did serve a practical purpose, besides being a weak spot from any angle besides fore and aft - it enabled the command crew to escape a warp core breach quickly. Should the main body of the ship be about to explode, the most valuable crew members… those with tactical skill and combat experience can survive to then fight another day, saving their wealth of knowledge. And if there's enough time, crew from the main body, the engineers as so forth, can turbolift their way to the forward command module. And if not, they died with honour. It's basically a quick release version of StarFleets Saucer Section. And with the long neck it is already a distance away from the early explosions of the main hull and can detach far easier than a Saucer can.
Wow I’ve played way too many games and read a few books. I always thought all Klingon ships were all equipped with ion torpedos. I had to look up my excel sheet for one of my games that I use to compare stats when playing. It does show ion torpedos lol thought I lost it. I believe the Interplay games also use ion torpedos and all of the unlicensed Star Trek games from the 90s and 80s also. Very interesting, I never noticed this until this video mentioned this.
Is that battle with an Excelsior class from VOY "Flashback"? (Making it the Excelsior) I'm trying to think of any other time that might've happened on screen.
Also gave voyager a run for its money when they found the sleeper ship in the delta quadrant. Did moderate damage before voyager disabled the cloaking.
The K'Tinga didn't have a cloaking device until after The Enterprise Incident and the Klingon-Romulan Technology exchange. It was purloined. It was warp drive for cloaking tech.
I know that a while back you did a video on the Starfury being a prefect space fighter in design, but I'm wondering if you had ever considered doing a video on the one I have always thought was prefect: GunStar One from The Last Starfighter.
Spacedock have you ever seen the ships from StarCraft? *Game* Example with the battlecruisers, wraith, Vikings what not. Also what about the old tv show Andromeda with its ships. Ps I love your VS stuff, comparing compliments of forces against eachother.
Okay, so it has a long boi necc. But we have shields. And also, what's the use of hitting the neck? You cut the bridge off, but it probably has a cic. The point of the neck in my view is actually quite clever. Keep the bridge away from the guns, keep the guns away from the engines. That way the enemy has to focus fire on one specific system, and cant disable multiple.
For a long time before I found out it was called the K'Tinga, I always thought it was called the D7 refit since it was in parallel with the Constitution refit of the Enterprise. I still think that would have been a more suitable identification for this ship.
While I highly doubt you'll cover it due to lack of hard data but it be nice to see some kind of craft or station from Destiny being covered, from the Hive Dreadnaugh all the way down the the Hawk, the last city workhorse of a ship.
"Fight well, Live with honor and die with a blade in your hands, if you can do these things you will live forever in the songs of the great klingon heroes" -Spock
They should make the K TINGA HEAD in the shapes of the HAMMERHEAD SHARK HEAD SHAPES, or maybe A LONG RECTANGLE HEAD SHAPES. The long neck should be stacking with laser guns on all around it.
I've been wondering after I found out about you, what do you think of the ship designs in gundam? Like for example the Alexandria-class Aswan, or the Ptolemaios II?
Can you do some stuff on the ships of Dead Space? I know the series is kinda... dead in the water, so to speak, but I'd love to see what you make of their designs. It's not necessarily hard scifi, but it's a hell of a lot closer to it than Star Wars.

One of the most classic Klingon ships that continues to serve for many decades. That's how you know that it's a well made ship
i've often figured that Klingons *really* are into the whole battle honors thing for their ships, and a ship that has a long history of battle and victory is more prestigious to serve on than a newer, less experienced hull. so basically they'll refit and rebuild for as long as possible to keep a ship in service, and don't retire ships when they get old, the way most other races do, instead only retiring one if the ship suffered a string of particularly dishonorable events. it would be more likely that such aging ships would be destroyed valiantly in battle, which klingons would see as an honorable end.
