Love the videos, but couldn't you get a sponsor that was related to EVs or the tech? I have played RAID in the past, and since you only have the two starter characters, it is obvious that you really haven't played what they want you to say.
Kyle is like the Golden Retriever of auto reviewers. It’s always uplifting to watch your video. Thanks!
I think halfway through the trip I would have gone nuts and attempt to tow the rivian with the Lexus.
Or just drive them separately. Maybe Kyle could have sped ahead in the Lexus to make his track day and Alyssa drive the trailer and Rivian
I think that motels would be a great place to add charging. If someone bought old motels, fixed them up, and added a level 2 charger for each room, that would be perfect for roadtrips!
I love watching your videos and seeing the country through your windshield. I'm a proud supporter of your channel with my likes and my views and I own a model 3 myself. So keep up the good work. PS would you please try to keep the windshield clean so we can enjoy the view that you provide with the front camera? Thank you and keep the dream alive
Blue is good a inspection dog nothing can’t get past him
17:59 the dog can smell problematic chargers.
You can tow and long-distance travel in an EV if you are a creator and can handle adding multiple hours to your travel time.
Ha! Basically, yes.
Would work great for shorter local tows, but yeah, I’m not willing to wait hours at stations when towing my Jeep or camper on vacation
You can do that too Vorch.
Thanks Kyle and all. Your patience and understanding are exemplary. Charging and BEVs will get better and better eventually.
The best suited company to switch to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) right now is Rivian. They’re an incredible company making incredible products and they haven’t scaled their DCFC network yet.
RJ, make the call now and offer free NACS retrofits to your customers! The longer you wait, the more expensive your CCS mistake will be!
Best ev channel. I'm not even interested in owning an ev one bit but I do like the rivian. You love evs your knowledgeable well spoken and you don't glorify ever aspect of owning and ev and you tow. If I didn't run a farm I'd wanna be a hotshot driver so towing videos are interesting to me. Like the detailing channel too.
so you dont like nice things? or cant afford one? just say that.
Have you ever thought about bringing a can of glass cleaner and a squeegee to clean the window off at each stop and keep your video looking nicer?
Love to see another Out of Spec video!
I have never associated being more creative with having better management skills.
My Casita trailer that I tow with my Model Y has the same load distribution hitch that you are using. Works great. Tow 33,000 miles over 2 years with out an issue.
Kyle, thank you for all this info. More ppl should watch and learn. AE should hire you as a consultant to get this fixed. I don't have the patience or time for all this. It's putting my switching to ev on hold till they fix this. I wonder if that's their plan? 🤔
One charging idea for the hotel night I'm not sure was considered...since you have another car in the back, it's not absolutely essentially that the hotel and charger be sited together. If you plug the truck into whatever L2 charger you can find and charge it overnight, you can then drive the Lexus from the charger to the hotel, and do the same thing in reverse the following morning.
Admittedly, this only works for the specific case where the trailer is carrying a car on the back, rather than some generic load, but it seems like it ought to be more time-efficient than spending the night without charging, then driving to a charger the following morning, depending on how long the loading and unloading of the Lexus would take and whether or not there exists a level 2 charger around with enough space to be able to leave the trailer connected all night.
Love the cross country trips. Keep ‘‘em coming.
Just drove from LA to Boulder in my Bolt. Our paces are pretty similar, especially in cold conditions without battery preconditioning in the Bolt. It would be close if we raced!
When will they start a class action lawsuit against Electrify America? It's going to have to happen soon.
When I bought my 500e before I sold it from near Stockton, CA I was happy I was able to make it out of CA to Medford, OR with just over half a tank of gas. And I made it home north of seattle from there on the next tank. EVs towing do a great job just showing how good gas vehicles are these days. Give us more cheap short range EVs and keep bringing down prices... Encourage state incentives with reduced registration costs and annual fees, not the opposite making short range commuters impractical. It shouldn't be cheaper to drive a gas truck everywhere than keep a second highly efficient EV for commuting purposes, but it is. I want a sub 3k lb 125 mile range performance spec'ed Miata sized EV that I can bomb around in, that would be sick.
Only in America with your subsidized oil is it on par but the rest of the world its 2x 4x cheaper look at Canada for example 6 dollars a gal some places alot higher then that Sweden 8 usd dollars same as Denmark but gas prices goes up and down fast vs electricity and with electric your don't have to worry about running out of power... because if that happens the least of your worries is going on a road trip
@@lesstevens2370 Sure, energy costs factor in, but the biggest costs, at least for me, in keeping additional vehicles, especially an EV, is the increased annual fees and insurance costs. EVs pay fixed extra annual fees to offset losses in gas tax revenue here on top of value based taxes and all the other costs of owning an extra vehicle have. When compared to my non-daily extra older ICE vehicles, the annual registration was many times more expensive than those and insurance is more too, it just wasn't practical. I didn't keep my 500e more than a year.

Can you do some videos about going to the track? Like what should we expect, what it costs, insurance, what we need to know to be a good citizen on the track ?
I have a 99 ls400 which is used for long trips it's so smooth and awesome. I'm guessing you are towing so you can make this video but I'd have driven that Lexus back.
Loved this road trip video.
That load would tow much more nicely with the Lexus about three feet further forward on the trailer. You want more weight on the hitch and less swinging around further back. Ask anyone who tows a lot.
Exactly this. Its so frustrsting watching how that was setup and strapped down.
You know they've made it when your favorite channels are making RAID Shadow Legends ads! :D I'll take it if it means more roadtrip and long videos!
You should get stake pocket d rings to more properly tie cars down. Gives you a lot more flexibility with tie down points.
Like that sticker at @11:26
Hertha BSC Berlin👍
I always appreciate your good attitude about all the issues you encounter with EA chargers. I can only image how frustrating it could be for the general EV owner who does not have your experience with these things and how to debug them to keep you going on the road. Frankly it is just extremely poor business practice and customer service for EA to keep providing these D-Level services. It’s a good thing they have the 2nd largest infrastructure in the US, or they would be out of business in my opinion. If I was a manufacturer such as Rivian or others I would be pissed EA is giving EVs such bad reputation when it comes to charging (outside of Tesla) of course. Perhaps it’s time for the manufacturers to get together and have a meeting with EA and tell them to step up their game or maybe it’s time for EA to get some upper management changes to have some folks who may actually give a damn about quality and their reputation. Cant wait for Tesla to open their network for other cars, frankly I would pay extra for the piece of mind on a long road trip not to worry about was BS problems I might face at a EA station. It is certainly not helping to promote the EV cause. If I was a manufacturer only selling Gas cars I would pay to loop your EA problems in commercials multiple times a day.
Yes but they don't have control over gas stations, and it would cost them billions to build refineries and drill wells... so if all of a sudden the price went through the roof or there is a fuel shortage... but so far rivan and tesla have there own networks rivans is still in there infancy compared to tesla so what automakers that only make ice would do that I know its not American because they all make evs so they would shoot themselves in the foot I think honda and Toyota are the only ones left stuck in the past
Drives me crazy seeing all these EV owners top charging so frequently. Their battery life is going to suffer so bad in the future. Not to mention it clogs up the stations
Love the LS. I’ve wanted one for years, had an opportunity to buy an absolutely mint LS400 a few years ago, but the owner wanted over $10k for it and it just wasn’t worth that much to me, especially since my long commute and it’s poor fuel economy would kill me. They’re incredible luxury vehicles though, among the best ever made.
I love EVs and drive them almost exclusively. I rarely tow things and almost never tow them long distance, but I would struggle to be willing to deal with the excessive number of charging stops and dealing with the dumpster fire that is the CCS charging network now. I’m a patient driver (used to road trip a Bolt EV) but the 1:1 driving/charging time combined with dealing with charging with a heavy trailer attached would get pretty old over long distances.
I’ve seen the behavior where the older EA chargers would put out erratic power , jumping erratically up and down as much as 70kw. It’s happened on EA chargers on my Ioniq5 and my old Bolt (smaller power fluctuations on the Bolt obviously). The car responded by capping the charging current to a lower level, like 100A. That seemed to work fine, aside from slowing the charging. Definitely didn’t brick the car, so that’s poor fault management from Rivian.
Ha Ha , fun to see you towing your antique hobby vehicle. For my dad's generation, it was having a Model T. For me it's my '67 Pontiac GTO Convertible. So apparently for the new generation it's a Lexus ICE car!
Love the road trips. Been a while since one with the doggies.
You should do a video of what it's like to pull a camper with the Rivian and Ford Lightning.
Thanks for the shoutout! You, Alyssa and the dogs were such troopers on that trip. Just curious, was there much difference in how the Rivian felt towing the Lucid vs the Old Man? I’d imagine the Lucid weighs quite a bit more. Fun trip!
Would be nice to see the difference between doing the manual charger selection vs let the truck pick all the route and charge points.
I used the exact same charger in Baker about a month ago and it created all sorts of errors. Had reduced power all the way to Vegas until I was able to reach Rivian and find a solution. I now use the 150 chargers at that location and overall charge time to 85% is basically the same as trying to do it on the 350 and that's only if the 350 makes it that far. The 350 starts off faster, but then drops below what the 150 maintains throughout its charge. If you're only charging to 60%, the 350 is likely faster. But, going all the way to 85-90% and it balances out. Looks like maybe they fixed that charger. Happy to see you were able to make to 99%.
On slowing down to 55 MPH to make it past Vegas, that's the slower way. I've tried that. Charging rates at 300-500 MPH vs driving at 55 MPH, have found it worth it to stop for 15 minutes than drive 25 MPH slower, which adds well over 40 minutes to a 160 Mile trip. For you, a double hit since you weren't able to make it. Slow driving and still had to stop. I just don't even try to make it anymore since it's so much quicker to just drive faster.
Seems like the Rivian's have more charger fault issues than other cars do.
Does the R1T have a menu somewhere to tell the software that you’re towing a trailer and maybe provide an estimated weight/ profile, so that it can adapt the range estimates? If not, is that something they’re working on adding?
I could have sworn I saw this in a previous R1T video, but I can't remember for certain
Hi I just subscribed to your channel. I plan to buy a Blazer EV SS this year so I am doing a lot of readings about EVs. My questions are not related to this vlog, what is your preferred EV trip planner and why? I heard about google maps upgrades to include route planner that will include fast charging stations is that right?
My next question can you locked your car while charging at a public charging station to go for lunch, buy coffee etc?
I did 700 miles in a day last month, but maybe I am getting old, I can t do those long stretches anymore. Amazing job to do 1000 miles, and charge over and over again.
Here’s an idea, just put the Rivian on the trailer and tow it using the Lexus, be much less fuss 😊
EA charger Roulette! The debacle continues...
Other than the above, pulling up to those busy parking lot chargers would give me so much anxiety. Wondering if the end space will be open or working, cars in the way etc. Reduced range and EV towing aside, my biggest worry would be finding a spot to pull into. I admire your (both of you) patience and calmness especially towards the end of a long trip like that.
Happy new year Kyle Connor and your family we wish healthy new year
Observation on hotels and chargers. I don't think hotels need dedicated chargers per se. I think having parking spaces with a selection of 240 volt outlets and you bring your own mobile EVSE units would be better. Less investment on hotels' part, people can choose the hardware they prefer, etc. The real issue is pushing auto makers to pack basic Level 2 capable mobile EVSE with their cars rather than level 1 or none at all (LOOKING AT YOU KIA)
We need more Lexus videos even if it's on your personal channel.
With faster charging speeds getting more common pull thru charging needs to be ramped up.
Quick stop. Charge and GO.
Nice home and work address published in this video.
Hi Kyle, additional questions, what is the trick in buying a new car or EV in particular without paying for extra to the car dealer above the MSRP cost? Also waiting for your reply on my previous questions
Why didn’t you just ask the other driver to move and explain the power sharing? I had someone do this to me when I first got my y and it was actually a big help
So how much extra time did having to charge and make so many frequent stops add to the trip? I figure 15 hours on average for a 1k mile trip?
Would have been so much faster if Alissa drove the Rivian and Kyle the Lexus and that was that. It's really silly to charge so often and so long to tow when you have two people who can drive.
@@ulfw you're not wrong, that 15hr estimate is with a normal car/truck. With charging it had to have been over 20hrs.
@@NerdyPatriot looked like they left at 9am and arrived at the track the next day just before noon, so maybe 26-27 hours?
@@ALMX5DP jesus christ so almost as much time charging as driving. That's insane.
@@NerdyPatriot yeah, though I'd expect that even in an ICE there would have been maybe 3-5 hours of stoppage time (dogs, meals, restroom breaks etc), but you're right it did add a considerable amount of time to the trip regardless. For me seeing the issues just makes me weary that no trip would be the same so planning something like that you'd need to build in that extra time knowing something is likely to go wrong (chargers not working, people blocking, slow charge rates etc).
Alyssa has got to be the chilliest wife/gf ever. No way my wife would be chill adding 20+ hours to a road trip to tow with an EV
Dam Kyle, you cane a long way with your "legal record"
Why are you not doing any videos with your Lucid?
If you are towing a car, the car should be positioned on the front of the trailer, not the back. It will sway less if you have to swerve at higher speeds
A great video. So informative. And fun to watch. Thank you !!
How do you reset Rivian. That would be good to know. I wouldn’t know what to do.
With reliable and plentiful infrastructure i can see this working for me (even with current EV offerings). But seeing this video has really showed that we're not there yet.
Yeah, it's a shame. We had so much great improvement over here in Europe over the last two years. Sad to see the US falling behind like this.
Should've planned ahead with tow friendly chargers. What's wrong with 100% charging? I do it all the time. Low range car problems....
Because hes in his cannonball mode.
I guess you discovered that towing into Las Vegas at 55 is going to cost you time. Better to go 65, and save that 10 minutes per hour of driving to charge in Vegas for an additional 20 minutes.
I hope that you can find some chargers that are off the beaten path in Las Vegas, such as to the southeast, where they have a Sams Club and Wal Mart.
Good video but my wife would divorce me if I took her on such a long trip waiting all the time for charging.
are there things that you'd divorce her for if having to endure?
@jdlutz1965 yes, that's why she won't do them.
41:07 that diverging diamond interchange was featured in one of @RoadGuyRob’s videos
Excellent and interesting videos; but, reconfirms my belief that EV's will never totally replace ICE vehicles. I love my 2019 BMW i3S for around the Sacramento area. Will keep the BMW X3 for trips longer than a couple of hours. Question: Do any policy makers really pay attention to what a PIA EV's are for a long trip?
Someone is going to make an electric trailer jack and automatic wheel chocks or apparatus to make unhitching simple.
I think the weight distribution setup makes it the most cumbersome. Other than that it's really no big deal (electric trailer jacks are fairly common for travel trailers, but can be added to pretty much anything).
Unhooking and rehooking the trailer takes 2 to 3 minutes, even with weight distribution hitch. It’s definitely annoying, but faster than waiting for an hour for random other drivers.
What was the total weight of load you were towing?
If only Rivian had copied Tesla and added DC buses between the DCFC cabinets…
If Rivian could make a deal to use Tesla chargers that would cement there place in the auto industry. Minimal retrofitting needed at this point as well.
Are there any amenities at the Baker EA? Looks like a huge opportunity.
There is a DQ chill and a Jersey Mike’s fast food Restaurant within the Gas station next to the Electrify America and Tesla superchargers
Yes, you can tow long distances, it is just not practical.
Tow another EV truck, then when one runs out of juice, switch them. :p
lol that might actually take more time when it comes to needing to charge both at the next stop.
God dammit EA. Every other video they present you a new problem
Can't wait to see RAN chargers on the East Coast, someone needs to compete with Tesla and EA.
Hey Kyle just wanted to mention that plugging in to EA's kettleman city location (also brand new hw not sure but assuming btc cabinets) 88 percent of charge (went to pick up food and came back to finish top charging as day after Christmas) I was only getting 7 kw in my ev6, thought it weird and changed chargers twice and it would briefly overcurrent to 130kw (5 seconds) and then throttle to 7 kw - same behavior. Eventually 10minutes later it went back to its normal charge curve... Definitely some issues regulating power up top and not just the rivians.
That’s a (not well) known thing with latest Hyundai/Kias, they’re doing battery checks and drop to low current while doing so. Happens independent of DCFC brand.
You definitely “can”, but “should” you?
Seriously guys....Raid Shadow Legends? Do your research before you blindly accept sponsors.
You can ...but....ugh 😩
Nice video, but I'd suggest that maintaining your integrity is more valuable than whatever they offer you to claim to play some silly video game that everyone knows you have zero interest in. I don't have a problem with promotions, just keep it honest, please.
I would love to get a rivan or lightning but even that lightning starts at 89k in Canada and the rivian is well over if only the wages in Canada kept up with price of things today houses cost 400k trucks 100k even the cheapest ev out there the bolt starts at 41k in Canada you guys can get for 17k and the conversion rate is only 25cents to the dollar good sign capitalism is failing
Really a Raid deal...you guys sound like you have negative interest in it. Don't be a sellout you're better than that.
PEOPLE ARE SOO FREAKIN CLUELESS! No research is ever done on how to charge and what cabinet to use. Very frustrating with EVs so far.
Dont think you can blame the consumer. People arent going to dedicate their time to learn every nuance unless it's their job or passion. Plus we're still in the infancy of DCFCs so teething issues have to be anticipated.
Amazing motor in that car. Please don’t keep it stock :) !
$COMS Sovereign 2023!
Tell Alyssa to make an OF I’d like to subscribe thank you.

Yikes
Oh wow! That’s not respectful..
Dude. Don’t be a pervert. This is so not the place for that kind of thing and that is completely disrespectful. She shouldn’t have to worry about creeps just because she’s on a RUclips channel. Jesus.
Account was just made 7 months ago, wonder who could it be 🤔
