I tried towing 11,000 pounds in freezing weather... My EV Truck Lied!

  • Today we tow my electric Hummer, with my electric Rivian Pickup Truck. Electric trucks aren't known for their towing ability - so today we try throwing two hurdles at once. Lots of weight in the freezing cold. I forgot to add the 1000lbs of Tongue weight to the overall weight of the trailer. We were actually towing 11,000lbs not 10,000lbs. oops.

    Rivian has now released an over the air software update that *FIXES* the range calculation error I was having while Towing. Thank you Rivian! I also forgot to add the 1000lbs of tongue weight to the total trailer weight. Which means we were actually towing 11,000lbs in this video.

      My only question is WTF would anyone spend nearly $100k for an electric truck with such low mileage, when you can get a brand new fossil fuel one for less than half the cost, and has over 3 times the range? Your truck costs more than my house, which also runs on electric at a cost of over $1,000.00 per month. You do know that you aren't saving the environment right? That electricity isn't coming from the sun. And when it's time to change the batteries, you're going to pay half the cost of he vehicle again, and load the waste into a non-recyclable environment known as a waste field. The same place out dated solar panels go, that can never be re-used, and never deteriorate, or biodegrade much like the plastics in your composter.

    • @JerryRigEverything
      @JerryRigEverything  Год назад +155

      @@HalfAssHomestead I do charge directly from the sun, and lithium batteries *are* 95% recyclable. You need to update your talking points. Yeah the price is high - but the rest of that you said is false. To each their own - just don't lie about stuff.

    • @9a3eedi
      @9a3eedi Год назад +20

      @@HalfAssHomestead I don't care about the environment much, but I find the rivian to be a very interesting offroader because of its electric motors. You can get really precise yet powerful torque control for each wheel that any fossil fuel car simply can't match.
      As for mileage, it might be lower, but because you can charge it at home you can always have a full charge, so it doesn't really matter. For long road trips, you'd most likely need to take a 30 minute break either way (for bathroom, food, stretching legs), might as well do it in a fast charger station.

      So you spend 6 hours a year filling up your ICE truck....outside.
      And you had to fill up the tank after only 100 miles.
      How much time do you spend doing brake jobs? EVs don't wear out brakes or rotors.
      How much time do you spend doing oil changes?
      EVs don't need oil changes, or transmission fluid changes, or engine air filters, spark plugs, catalytic converters, mufflers, particulate filters, DEF or stops at gas stations twice a week, every week for your entire life.
      You can charge up your EV a few times a week all year long in a garage. It takes 3 seconds to plug it in with no going outside in the cold.
      Do you make 200 mile round trips every day of the year? That's 73,000 miles per year.
      Most people who own trucks don't tow most of the time.
      Oh, the humanity.

      @@michaell1603 Phone BMS modules operate very differently than EV range estimates. Phone battery percentages go by voltage and/or wattage, while almost always having 5 - 10% headroom at either end of the scale to adjust for situational tolerances.
      Let's say the battery is "rated" for 13.5W, but can actually go up to 14W when fully charged. That extra 0.5W is why your phone stays at 100%. The same thing happens at 0%, and that's usually to safely shut down the phone and keep the clock running when off.
      And again, this is to accommodate manufacturing tolerances. Some batteries might have a defect that only allows them to charge to 13.7W, for example. But by keeping that 13.5W rating, it guarantees that all batteries will function at least as well as expected.

    Whenever you secure a vehicle to a trailer, you should try and tie to an unsprung point, ie something that doesn't move when the suspension compresses. Usually an axle tube is a good spot. That way your straps don't loosen up or fall off when you hit a bump and the body moves on the suspension. Definitely do it that way if you're using chains and binders since they don't have any stretch in them to take up that slack.

The high amperage would cause the voltage to spike upwards leading it to have a higher voltage and possibly think it was at a high state of charge. Then it compared how many miles it had already traveled with little voltage drop and figured the remaining range to be high.

      @@kevinsellsit5584 I don't understand why we can get a diesel hybrid.. Small 3-4 banger diesel generator charging up batteries and all the EV power.. That would be a real game changer...

      @@FJB2020 Weight and cost mostly. There is always a "point of deminishing returns" and it comes into play very early with hybird EV's.
      A small diesel can of course charge the batteries, but only enough to extend the range. It would do well if you stopped at every rest stop for a half hour with the diesel at wide open throttle charging the batteries.
      A diesel locomotive is an EV without a battery. It uses a V16 2-stroke diesel with 4 turbochargers and 2 blowers to generate *ALL* of the power to run the electric motors which move the train. But it might take 3 V16's to get it up to speed. Not to mention the X number of tons of fuel it carries.
      To make your truck keep going for say 600 miles (while towing a brick shaped RV) would require a diesel big enough to have done the job without the motors and batteries.
      That being said, your 3 or 4 cyl hybrid might make it non-stop across a state or two if it had steel wheels on steel track.
      Batteries are getting better every day. I can't wait till the battery fits in the glove box and provides cross country range. If aliens would bring us a few more goodies for the periotic table it would sure help.

      Drive a 2020 e-Golf in the arctic of Norway and we had -40 degrees at one point and my car drove just fine, obviously when you have a 70% reduction in range the best you can hope for is city driving and the charge network up here is pitiful.
      Considering charging electric cars is now same price as fuelling a diesel car in Europe and Norway, the only advice I have is to get a small electric car for city, but an used Diesel Volkswagen Passat for long range, had a 2014 Passat, got 1200km out of it on one tank during winter long range driving, good luck doing that in an electric car.

    He explained the trailer weight. He explained the towing capacity of the Rivian. He showed us the tongue weight of the trailer. He talked about making sure the load is balanced. What he neglected was the Rivian's "payload". The tongue weight of any given trailer as it sits on the hitch of the tow vehicle counts AGAINST the tow vehicles available payload. Many people neglect this factor when towing trailers (especially RVs). The mistake is thinking, as long as the trailers weight is less than the tow vehicles towing capacity, all is well. It is very common to load the tow vehicle over its payload and still be under the tow capacity.
