Will it Chug???
IT WILL.
It must
it has too
I claim all of your studio!
It better be!
I remember hating this pedal as a kid. I thought when I bought it that it would be dime's sound in a box and was so disappointed that it wasnt
You were their target demographic.
@@MustakimAlMahdi that is very true! Sad how alot of gear used to be like that. Just shit with a sticker of our guitar heros on it. Most of the products they never used theirselves or if they did it was in conjunction with other stuff to help nudge it along to make it sound better.
Haha same here!
ditto , i had the green one without Dimes face and glow in dark graphics.
@@calmccullen3539 I had that one too, solid green LOL! I still have it. They actually advertised it as being "bulletproof". People dont like it but I actually like it for some of the industrial stuff I do. Thats pretty much all I find it good for.
They definitely shouldn't sell this toy with Dime's face.
TGerreGT he approved it... Dime boosted everything with a Zakk Wylde overdrive towards the last few years.
You’re supposed to boost it.
@@Unknown-bd9ss it's very common. I don't understand your comment.
@ihate names
His tone, was inextricably dependent upon the mix. In isolation, it was terrible.
TGerreGT They’ve been doing the same thing for hendrix for decades
"I am some what disappointed". That's exactly what my brother said when he bought that pedal back in the day.
When did it come out?
Will it chug? - Zoom G1on ,please.
€44 at Thomann
I own a G5n which I think the G1on shares a lot of models with. I definitely have a chuggy preset for my G5n so I'd think it does!
YES IT DOES!
You can create your own Metal presets, and they don't sound bad at all!! Maybe a little digital, but they are usable!
I've had one of these for a while it can if you have the right presets.
Pleassseeeeee ola?
This is what I like to see in a review. Someone who is brutally honest. He doesn't hold back at all.
Thank you mate!!
Ola’s facial reactions were mine the entire video. This DOES NOT sound like Dime.
Doug Anderson
fixed!
plot twist: ola will be demoing underwear, thanks grammar nazi🙋🏻♂️
I got dimes gone with a dod grunge in a fender rumble 25 bass amp and an ibanez rg370dx with a floyd in C# standard. Has literally the same scooped tone imo. Love it.
ML2s sound almost identical with gain and low at 12 o clock and high and distortion at 2-3
@@nicholasguglielmo8717 did you use the contour switch? Scoops it like crazy
Not enough gain? Did you look for the 3 pack?
MXR dime, kind of reminded me more of his, Damageplan sound than Pantera.
Agreed
Absolutely
yes!!! I heard that too haha. Good ear you have!! 🤘
Fucking loved his Damageplan sound. If you think about it, dime wasn’t even finished growing as an artist! He finally was getting sponsored backings like mxr, krank, Washburn. He was all about the guitar and accessories (pickups, pedals, effects).
@@garywilkey4776 especially when you consider that before damage plan he was in such a rut. The 2nd album woukd have change the game. They were kinda leaning towards a groove/nu metal sound with some of their stuff like save me. Imagine the sound if the next album came out in like 2005/6
sounds like a low budget distortion pedal with a half dead battery.
Yeah and have you seen the price? Almost 200 for this shit
I got one at a clearance sale for under $100. I was so crushed when I got it home and put it through my rig, sounded tinny as hell. Gave it away to some newbie kid down the street who was just thrilled to have a distortion pedal, lol!
The irony with that comment is this is one of the few pedals that has an 18 volt adapter. I wonder if Ola was running at 9 or 18 volts?
When I saw the video was 7 minutes long, I knew something was wrong.
Lol
thanks for this series man. i’m a novice guitarist and the pedal i wanted to get had LITERALLY no other videos but yours. helped a lot.
POV the year is 2004. You come home from school and are about to listen to some Sum 41 when all of a sudden, everyone at your middle school knew who dime bag was the whole time.
I might be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet its not the same pedal on the inside as it was back in the day. I remember having an all green Dime Distortion pedal back in the 90s, that thing was killer. Nailed that scooped sound. I think it's probably one that would benefit from being plugged into a preamp as well. All that being said, modern day distortion pedals sound so good that it's quite possible I have a skewed perception of what the pedal actually sounded like. haha.
I have this pedal, hooked it up along with a 7-band eq and a gain booster up to my Mesa Boogie cabinet and it makes some seriously sick sound when the low end is cranked up.
Also, I'm really digging that shirt.
Check out the MXR Doubleshot, it's the Dime Dist + another more classic thick fuzzy circuit on the bottom. They sell dirt cheap used. Never liked the top Dime circuit too much but the one on the bottom has a great thick classic fuzzy sound, sounds amazing after a phaser. The Dime Dist always sounded way too modern for me, honestly was surprising seeing all the positive reviews for it individually while people seem to hate the Doubleshot.
I remember when I bought one, packed it back up and bought a metal muff with the boost channel. Way way WAAAAY better.
“I’m somewhat disappointed”
My reaction to almost every MXR distortion pedal I’ve tried.
Same here, everyone I've ever owned has been a total tone sucker too.
Chris Mann IMO their GT-OD is a great pedal if you want to boost/add a bit of compression to your distortion or fuzz. Otherwise I agree, their boxes are middling at best.
I think the MXR Dime might sound okay with an EQ pedal up front with a level and mid boost.
But what's the point when that Apex Preamp sounds so good?
I think it might fare better in front of a crunch/overdrive amp instead of a clean. Shot in the dark though tbh.
I tried it w an eq in both positions, w some gain in a randall head and it was always terrible. The only time it sounded half decent was with a small practice amp.
Think the Dime sounds ok on its own as hardrock pedal without the Dimebag affiliation cuz not good enough to meet Dime's standard
@Bill Mccloy were you buying these dope amps from?
@Bill Mccloy My most convincing Vulgar tone came from an MXR Distortion + into the front of an old Fender solid state combo. Weird but true.
sounds like the speaker is being covered with a blanket
Dime turning in his grave
Will it Chug: The Krank Distortus Maximus pedal. I've been planning to get one for a Krank Krankenstein tone "to go".
I used to have one. Its good.
Short answer: no. Unless you boost it. It's like a dry amp. Lots of gain but a very thick full range input signal. It's also kinda noisy.
I like mine. Best when boosted or into a low gain amp.
I was going to buy One a few years back and dude in the shop told me they kept breaking on people. Just saying.
MF Kitten I’ve got one, for some reason when using DC power adapters, I agree it’s ridiculously noisy when powered. I’ve found powering it with the 9V battery only is a pretty big improvement on the one I have.
Bought this when it first came out, immediately returned it the next day. I remember being pretty disappointed in it
Wow with that second pedal the sound is really spot on, good tip ola and I love your pinch harmonic technique, sounds full just like dimes
I bought one of those Dime pedals about 20 years ago, still have it. Theres more gain on the old one than this new version. That horizon pedal is sweet
I didn't think the pedal sounded too bad on the I'm Broken riff. There's a weird quality with some signature pedals and early modelling stuff where it sounds like a caricature of the sound it's trying to be. It's nice to see a comparison with an alternative product in these kinds of videos, more information and context is always a good thing.
Man this was my favourite pedal! Sadly it recently craped out 😔 played through a 2000’s Marshall MG solid state amp and it crushed the tone for 20 years 🤘🏻
Almost bought one of them a few times. Glad I saved my money
I remember I borrowed this pedal from a friend back in the day and actually used it on one of my REALLY early covers for youtube, I didn't know shit about anything tone-wise and definitely struggled with it, but I'd love to give it a go again today. I may be one of the few to say it, but I can actually hear SOMETHING in it that has a Dime-esque character to it, mainly in the eq structure I think.
It sounds like they were trying to do what the CFH pluggin managed to achieve, in capturing the mixed album tone in pedal form, which has to be a damn tricky thing to do!
This video makes me actually want to test my Dean razorback and all of my pedals that I own to find the answer to dimes sound. I think the amp and guitar pickups will play a big role in this. Maybe test the pedals with some of the older marshall amps made in the uk. Different amp heads. in fact I liked how it sounded before ola even plugged the pedal in.
bought this pedal back when I had just started playing and when it came in the mail I hooked it up straight away....then I remember using it much after that. I don't think I ordered pedals after that. At least now days there's youtube so its safe to order again, instead of solely trusting what is there in the local music store to try first hand
>Plugs in a Dimebad pedal
>chug chug chug
....
"Its sorta scooped"
Dunno what i was expecting really.
I’ve got the EVH preamp and it’s a beast. I use it in front of a clean amp with my precision drive and it’s quite the metal chug machine. I’m seriously considering the SD powerstage 170 too so I can get rid of my head all together. Lugging a half stack just ain’t my thang no more haha
Which exactly EVH preamp do you have?
"Scooped Chugging" is only a dime. Don't miss the sale. Only today.
I love your honesty. I love your chugs. I love the soothing sound of your voice. I love you.
thank you very much for the video ola, I'm not a big fan of this MXR dime for me it's only marketing Dimebag never used it during a concert. I much prefer the dracarys wampler or the revv g3
It did resemble his tone a bit with out the scoop when you had it dialed in like that, but not enough gain.
I'm really struggling with this one. . I really do appreciate your work and as a musician knowing without a doubt there are a lot of musical theories I grew up in the 80's and know there are a load of great guitarists (and Bands) from back then and cannot wait until the new (old school) rock comes back. Thanks for all you do m8!
You can have he "E" heavy and I will love the "A & D" then, Get Back Easy :))! Tic Tok Metronome, lol!!!!
Not a pre-amp pedal. Needs to go into front end of an amp. Stacking necessary.
Definitely needs a boost
I promise you it still sounds like ass, I tried it...
@@OlaEnglund xD
Ola in the video: "it doesn't sound very good I must say"
Ola in the comments: "it sounds like ass"
😂
@@OlaEnglund could you try it with a jcm 800 head and an old boss od 1 cut the distortion on the od1 max the volume for a boost?

I love EHX Micro metal Muff! it's one of my three favourite Metal Pedals ! Simply awesome, simply Metal!
Yes! I too have the Micro MM and absolutely love it! So much that I just might try to put my little Weenis into it! Hahahahaha
Hi Mass.Shadows ! The Micro MM by EHX really chugs ! \m/
I remember buying one of these when they first came 12 years ago after getting some new guitars thinking it was going to really shred, and was sad when it didn't really do much for me. I probably have it in a bin in my storage unit somewhere.
does anybody acknowledge the fact that this is his old office?
Иоханнес Албус i was thinking this was an older vid, then I looked at the release date.
I was thinking more than anything that this was a vid he made a while ago that he just uploaded
Was scrolling to see this comment. Glad I found it.
@@andrewkennedy9704 i'm glad that we are on the same perception.
I really love this series, and there are two pedals/preamps that I am hoping you'll be able to do one day, the Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Mayhem and the Damage Control Demonizer. The difficult part about these is they have been discontinued for quite some time now, and Damage Control as a company doesn't exist anymore. They are now Strymon. I've seen both of these floating around on Reverb for ridiculous amounts of money, so hopefully someone can donate them to you for the purposes of a vid or two.
Anyways, keep up the great work, Ola!
Wait the Twin Tube Mayhem is a expensive piece? I sold it dirt cheap less than a year ago because I thought it sounded like crap
If your gonna give it away , sign it make it worth a S**t Lol .
Man your guirtar collection is a dream. I still have my dime Washburn (not usa made lol) from like 95-96 maybe. I will never part with it. Headstock broke off twice from falling but it is all fixed up now and still rips! Love the videos!
"It's sorta scooped"
I mean didn't he have a scooped mid tone?
He had more mids than that thing does. I don't mind a scooped tone, but that thing takes too much of the mid-range away from the sound.
Yeah but not like that trash pedal. That tone just sounds hollow and weak. Also it's the good kind of scooped, like Metallica tones. Carefully done and mixed so it sounds powerful. This just sounds like a 10w practice amp
No sir, dime s tone it's everything but scooped. He had overwhelming lows, but his mxr eq was mostly mids. His rythm sound is mostly mids
@Joseph Zbacnik that’s a common misconception about Darrell. Like stated above his tone is everything but scooped. The mids are lowered on the amp head, but boosted through the roof with pq furman and mxr blueface
I have read the mans words himself about setting his EQ scooped.... Smiley face I think we’re his words?! Just because some kid who thinks he’s dimes biggest fan doesn’t mean he knows his tone... I think he needs to go back to Pantera in the very early days and listen again. No good Ola...
Reminds me of the MXR Double Shot Distortion and Mxr Distortion II with added scooped.
Here's comparison suggestion for you Ola
I was hoping Ola would "dime" all the knobs for science.
Bravo for being honest Ola! Your face told us everything, your words the rest.
It sounds great. You can push the preamp in the pedal with a lot of volume. I think it sounds awesome. Makes me want to buy one. Dime bags rifs had the gain backed off and enhanced on solos by his sound man.
I think that lower gain actually sounds heavier. Less muddy sounding and tighter. Just my opinion.
The pedal sounds great - I have just connected it directly to Tomsline Shaper (cab simulator - 4x12 something) and sounds excelent. It has good amount of gain too (with my Seymour Duncan pickup). But probably does not sound like Dimebag - but I have not tried to find that sound.
I bought that pedal when it first came out back in 2005, I'm a HUGE Dime fan... I sold that pedal. It sounded like shit to me too...
I am glad you gave this review. I had this pedal and I didn’t want to sell it. I tried everything. Different amps and so on. But I couldn’t get anything usable out of.
Strange. I've tried this pedal and heard others review it, and while it's not a carbon copy of Dime's sound, I thought it sounded pretty good then.
Think it might sound a little better into the front end of a two stage amp as opposed to directly into a clean power amp? I wonder if the target market for this pedal would typically have that setup and perhaps it was designed for what MXR deems to be a more "regular" set up. Fun video as always!
If I'm not mistaken, Ola plays chords often by jumping between the first 2 strings and 2nd & 3rd string power chords using all 4 of his fingers. (That's what it looks like to me) He recently started listening to Megadeth and it's interesting because that technique was pretty much invented/pioneered by Dave Mustaine but Ola just so happens to among those who did it without being inspired by Mustaine.
FYI: Combine/stack the MXR dd11 Dime distortion with the MXR ZW44 Zakk Wylde overdrive then dial it in with a MXR 6 band graphic equalizer pedal. And as Dime would say: Getcha' Pull.
"Will it chug?" meets "What's the scoop?"
I used to own this pedal, even an older version with oldschool rubber knobs. it had a good tone only in one or two settings, I also used to put it in front of a clean tube amp and maybe the amp's own eq and response helped to achieve a good tone? It was a scoop city anyway and you're right about the gain - not enough for a Dime signature distortion. Unless maybe you need to boost it with an od in front?
It’s designed to work with Dimebag’s crank tube amplification to push the tubes a way bit harder and it will chug
No it won't I tried it
So the wall in the new place is ready! Wow!
It has a bit of the Dime sound (not much), but lacks balls badly.
Question: Is this the new Metal Zone? Can you make it sound good?
Metal Zone is a PEDAL for this shit
I actually kinda dig the tone at 4:05-4:30. It doesn't sound like Dime but it doesn't sound bad either.
This pedal never deserve the Dime's Face on it.
The scooped tone is better. Leave it engaged. Put some high watt, solid state amplification behind it, stir and enjoy!!
I bought this thing when it first came out and returned it the same day. I was so disappointed. There was a severe lack of gain for a Dime pedal
This was actually a great promo for the Apex preamp
Ola doesn't realize how much the Megadeth show inifluenced him. Now all his riffs sound like Megadeth, and that's a good thing!
nah his riffs are more to death metal than thrash metal
Ola, the one to try would be the Doubleshot Distortion...Dime and MXR original pedals in one enclosure...
Wonder after all these year if that pedal just needed a little help with a boost in front of it. Maybe worth a try?
was thinking the same thing...
All dist pedals are made to go into a preamp! BS vid !!
It's supposed to be the boost in-front of the amp...
he TRIED running Inline Effects and Still sucked.
I hope MXR asks you to help them update that pedal. That would be sick!
That damn pedal was a “cash grab” that’s all. Sadly it’s a shit pedal. Just because it’s adorned with Dimes name doesn’t mean it’s not immune from criticism.
The wah pretty nice though.
Dime approved and I'm seeing some comments in here saying he used the pedal as a puzzle piece to his tone and added overdrive to it, which would make sense
I’ve used it almost like an overdrive on an already distorted amp and it sounded better. Gets closer to the Dime sound that way.
I mean this is exactly what most gain pedals are designed to do , to use infront of an amp that’s set up for a base tone… no disrespect for Ola here, but you can’t expect it to sound any good when you plug it straight to a poweramp. The Apex preamp sounds good because it’s more of an amp in a box type of preamp thing
Can you tell me witch amp is chugging in 0:08? I mean, that is a great chugg
Probably his randall amp and a horizon devices overdrive
@@ItsSauIGoodman to me It sounds like a really good amp with a killer clean boost, but which amp🤔🤔🤔

Try the boost on, gain all the way up, treble almost all the way up, mids about 2 (not 2 o'clock) , and bass about mid way.... it starts to get there. I have one.
will it chug: peavey ultra plus
1 Use a phantom powered high frequency mic. 2 Add preamp (Overdrive)3 Change format of video clipMaybe the same strings. Now there is this thing that goes on with guitarist and string. When they are tired, a guitarist could lower string caliber. However, live performance can take many different light strings. But in a studio is heavy gauge strings, near 60, or 11-60.
Lmao. “Does it chug”. I’ve heard Zoom 505 pedals chug more but okay
Gotta give credit where credit is due. This pedal was a game changer for me...in that it sounded like hot flaming garbage, and sent me running to the internet to search for tips on how to dial it in. Somewhere in that search, I ended up educating myself on the difference between distortion pedals, solid state amps, and tube amps. Going down that rabbit hole paved the way for me to upgrade to a proper amp.

I had one of those mxr dime bag distortion pedals years ago it sounded great
Glad I bought the mxr 5150 overdrive instead of this...

@@NL-fe4le 10/10
the mxr dime sounds good on its own. no need for change
You can try to add an overdrive before the dime distortion to have an extra gain
Pedal wise closest thing I have found is my mxr full bore metal one thing is that it is extremely tempermental you need to know what you’re searching for tone wise or else you’ll never quite dial it in, if you shift one knob the rest need to shift as well that’s the thing with it
Why not Ola its a tone of a legend...
You can emu those tone....
Love you brother..
You nailed it. "This is not enough gain, man". No way. Not even close. That gain sounds like it stops around seven or eight when it should be around eleven or twelve.
I quite like the tone, it will probably sound better when stacked with another medium gain pedal or with the crunch channel on your amp
Zoom G1 Four X. I love mine. Perfect for us bedroom axe wielders. Some built in presets are nice and chuggy.
I have the same one, I almost didn't think that it was from MXR. its camoed in there, DIME deserves better!
Ola, you should get ahold of a Korg Hyper Distortion 104ds. They’re hard to find but if you do get one they WILL chug.
Yeah MXR need to reissue this, lots of badass new pedals coming making this thing sound like 8-bit.
Put a boss Od1 and any compressor sustainer in front of it for more gain/sustain. I take an educated guess he also used some of the amp's gain in conjunction with the pedal
Ola! We should start a petition to have mxr update this pedal and make it sound like dimebag's actual distortion/tone!
I heard its designed to run into a clean fender style amp cranked clean, or boost a randall already cooking with gain. Either way. I think randall amps nail it better by themselves . you can find amazing randalls that are not century's, from 200-500$ no excuses for not atleast getting close to the tone . also there is a big difference in his live vs studio tone ive noticed in videos. One of my good friends is a dime nut, i hear this stuff on the daily.
