Ola, great comparison video. I would have liked to have seen the Diezel Herbert pedal in the comparison. @• ЯεlιgιασÐεMεяdα • I bought it today and just played it for the first time. And I must say for that price , and as my first ever distortion pedal its very good. Im satisfied with it.
Well, it’s supposed to be a clone of the tech 21 pedals, and it does it pretty well, watch some videos about the original sansamp models. That thing does it all in my opinion, I recently made a diy copy of the original sansamp classic and it does it all, from mesa nirvana tones to marshall to even a slightly cranked ac30 or a slightly broken bassbreaker ahahahah
I agree. The muff is a muff- too fuzzy. The Engl is a cash grab. Boss are way better at modulation than distortion. I’m a huge fan of clean power and pedal tone shaping. Used to run a Carvin Valvemaster 100, that had so much clean power, after throwing in KT77 tubes, i could never take it over 3, for fear of blowing my Marshall 1960b cab. Ran it with Skreddy Pedals overdrives and distortions, and it sounded great for the genre i was playing at the time. Almost like a hot rodded 800. Pedalboards are way more fun than just having a one trick recto.
The Metal Muff has my favourite type of tone of all the pedals here, raw, old school, with big chugs, but the Behringer produced the best quality tone, and owning that pedal myself (as well as the Metal Muff) I can say that the Behringer can produce even better tones (it has 3 different amp / gain / mic modes)
yeah something about the MetalMuff just felt right and it sounded really nice connected to my EQ GE7 man not sure why i had the stupid idea of selling my old MM pedal?
Got to say, my favourite may be Metal Muff, but then again I have a soft spot for the very nasty solid state Death Metal tone. Uglier the sound the better.

When the Behringer pedal sounds better than the Engl, you know there is something wrong with the world! Also that riff starting at 11:43 was pure fire!
those are actually pretty decent (in a dm chainsaw sort of way) if you keep the "tone" knob on 9:00 or less. it's a clone of DOD Grunge with the bass knob removed (fixed at 3:00)
Great! I also prefered the Behringer, which is a clone of the Sansamp GT2, if someone is wondering. A Sansamp PSA-1 chug test could be fun also, this thing packs a metric ton of fire. That's quite a lot, since fire is pretty light.

I've been playing guitar for almost a year now, so I don't understand everything Ola is talking about, but I really enjoy watching his video's because of his killer riffs
The top boost will work as a boost while using a lead tone. You’ll definitely engage delay/reverb with it. Or even a tubescreamer pedal with it. So engaging only the top boost won’t make it a lead tone alone. It’s like a teamwork of other pedals together 😝
@@Golem29 The Engl: Trying to emulate a sound achieved after tens if not hundreds of hours spent refining a tube amp's way of distorting a signal. The Beringer: Just designed to distort the signal to get into the ballpark of a a much less refined tube amp distortion sound.
Why don't you do both? Just try to make it chug in the clean channel (as most people would use a distortion pedal, I guess), and then plug it in the FX loop right after that in one single video. Or the other way around idk
More work but although a multi fx user I suppose they're both valid ways to use a pedal. I guess in front of the preamp would be the "right" way if one wants to use the clean channel on the amp.
Renato Domingues, well, he doesn’t have to do any work regarding making opinion videos about gear, right? I don’t see the Gestapo over there forcing anything on him. He can go drive a taxi instead. If you’re going to make judgments about pedals, connect them both ways, and then give an opinion. @@Dr.Jekyll I'm not sure I'm getting your point, probably due to my so so english. Do you mean he should do the "complete" task or not at all? As a viewer I would prefer so, but it's not like I'm entitled to it. It's free content and there is more of it to explore, and not only on RUclips.
@@rbdrbd I think the point is that instead of complaining "I can never win", he could just put in the extra effort of trying both methods. It's not exactly a ton of work to plug it in the clean channel, try it, and then plug it into the FX loop and do the same thing, when the recording rig and everything is set up anyway. Not that he _has_ to do anything, but seems that there would be a fairly simple solution to this issue.
I actually went out and bought a Behringer V-Tone after watching the first video you did. I use it for recording rough demos. I plug hit strait into my Focusrite scarlet interface through my DAW. I'm using Reaper but I prefer to track di to get clarity. But I don't like guitar plugins bc I don't like the flat tingy artificial guitar tone that most amp plugins have. So the V-Tone amp sim is perfect for what I'm doing. Like I said just for rough demos. I mic a EVH 5150 III 50w with a couple sm57's and a condensor mic when I track for finals. Surprisingly, there's not much of a difference in tone. Very pleased with it.
I had the EHX Metal Muff for about 3 years, and I had never used the top boost for anything. I was gladly surprised with the behringer. Thanks for this comparisson!
I bought the behringer because it sounds amazing when Ola made the "will it chug" and I'm still happy with the purchase. to be so cheap it is versatile and a distortion that sounds brutal is achieved. Behringer's must be grateful to Ola
Liked the clarity of the Metal Muff. I like the Behringer over all. I do own the Behringer. I got it because 1) it had many different sounds and 2) it works as a DI.
I wouldn't use any of those with this configuration, maybe the Behringer. The Boss DS1X demo you did in a previous video blasts everything else away! That is the way to connect that pedal.
I said it in the original and I'll say it here again: the EHX Metal Muff Top Boost is enormously practical when playing in an actual band (and without having a GOOD technician doing a full monitoring on every instrument) since the frequencies cut through everything so well. In a extreme metal band where the rhythm tone already is completely ridicously over the top, you sometimes need that. And I'll say most of the mixed lead sounds I have every used sound like ass on their own (a lot of rythm tones as well btw).
What AnthonyEsquer said. Cannibal Corpse are well known for having used a metal zone boosting Mesa Rectifiers on some early albums. Do you know the band Enthrallment from your country? Very good death metal band who were influenced by C.Corpse in their early days.
Cool shootout! I dig the Behringer! Just started saving for my first Solar Guitar...wanna get the A 1.7D! I’ve successfully quit smoking after many tries, so now putting all the money I’ve would have spent on smokes in a seperate account, and when I have enough I will purchase it!! Can’t wait! Awesome recap dude!!Super fair!!! For the tones I prefer I would use in this order. Not saying the other pedals wouldn't be great for other applications 1. Behringer V-Tone Guitar GDI 21 2. Boss DS-1X Distortion. 3. Electro Harmonix Metal Muff w. Top Boost 4. The Engl Powerball Distortion Pedal.
@@gabrielc.1556 No it's not, favoring is what Anderton's did once with the Mesa Boggie Cab Clone (or sth like that), when they did a video where the cab sounded really bad, but really, like ass, but there was a Mesa employee (which actually at that time was Peter Honoré) and because of that they said the cab sounded great, that's favoring the brand absolutely
It's true, the Behringer is the best by far, it has a fatter, warmer and more defined sound. Maybe it's because it's a preamp pedal and not strictly a distortion. I'm lovin 'it. Excellent comparison by the way. 12:47 That makes it great.
Metal muff, Is Made to go in front of a warm ir cranked amp. And the treble boost Is Made to cut trough a mix in that context. Not strictly for "soloing". I struggled for a while until i learned that.
Metal Muff and Behringer GDi. I used to work as a manager in a store here in Manila that caters Behringer products. As a guitarist, that GDi is cool and has a reasonable price. Thanks for the review.
I love Boss Pedals. They've always been the most consistent across the board for me, no pun intended. I use a Boss Overdrive Pedals going into my Producer's Peavey XXX Head. I use a Boss Chorus Pedal for my Lead Tone, yeah, I'm partial too Boss Pedals. We all have what we like, and hate for tone.
I highly recommend the boss DS-1X for home use. Something about the way it produces the digital distortion makes it very good for low volume practicing, it doesn't sap the tone with the level right down like some of these other analog pedals will do
Thats was my exact reason to buy a dis pedal, my amps drive kicks in at full blast and I needed a low volume chug so I went for my 1st pedal ever the Boss DS1X.
Behringer wins also here for me... In the end, this is a clone of the legendary sansamp gt2 + an integrated DI... overall this delivers the better texture among the four (metal muff without boost follows just after), and it costs simply nothing...btw, people will always have something to complain about everything Ola, thanks for sharing all this!
Hey, Ola. I don't watch your gear demos in order to get your stamp of approval on some piece of gear. I watch to see how those pieces of gear function. If you like it, good. If you don't like it, that's okay, too. For instance, you didn't seem to really dig the Metal Muff. All right. I personally thought it sounded pretty good. I would certainly consider buying one if I was in the market for a distortion pedal. Your review demonstrated to me how it sounds, that's what I needed. Especially since I'd never heard one before but had been curious about it for a long time. So thanks for that review. I learned something I didn't know before. That was a job well done, so I "liked" that video, even though you and I came to different conclusions about that pedal's sound. I don't absolutely REQUIRE that everyone else agree with all my opinions. Keep up the good work.
By the way, in this vid, I liked the Metal Muff and the Behringer. I agreed with you that the Powerball failed to produce an erection, while disagreeing over the Boss DS-1X--you thought it was good, I thought it sounded like old, unwashed ass. Still a good review. Thanks.
I really enjoyed this video. Great to have at least two to compare to create a baseline or gauge relative chug. Would be neat to hear a plug in vs a pedal as a future idea like what you love to hear (your best) vs something else as a test.

I've been playing guitar for almost a year now, so I don't understand everything Ola is talking about, but I really enjoy watching his video's because of his killer riffs
The V-tone definitely sounded the best in that caparison. Better tone and better note clarity
This type of controlled conditions comparison video is the most valuable around, thanks Ola.

Sounds a little like a new age 'Suicidal Tendencies' tone! \m/
Especially the tone on "How Will I Laugh Tomorrow..." Love the playing on that album.
The top boost will work as a boost while using a lead tone. You’ll definitely engage delay/reverb with it. Or even a tubescreamer pedal with it. So engaging only the top boost won’t make it a lead tone alone. It’s like a teamwork of other pedals together 😝
Lol that Engl being the most expensive. Very underwhelming
honestly was one of my favorites, the behringer was actually pretty tight too, I hated the Boss though
@@ThePookybear56 The Engl just came off weak and lacking. Dunno. Asking so much for a pedal like that would demand a lot more.
@@Golem29 The Engl: Trying to emulate a sound achieved after tens if not hundreds of hours spent refining a tube amp's way of distorting a signal.
The Beringer: Just designed to distort the signal to get into the ballpark of a a much less refined tube amp distortion sound.
you nailed Ola, that quick comparison at the end showing room sound and mic'd , nobody do that!, thanks.
The boost on the metal muff makes my ears bleed 🩸
It’s even worse in person 😂😂😂
Yeah it may be the shittiest pedal ever made
GearGasms now maybe the fanboys of that pedal will take my video seriously when I said it sucks a year and a couple of years ago. LOL
I've heard better highs on a 5 watt practice amp
As someone who owns the metal muff i dare not use the top boost. It is trash. But with no top boost its alright.
Keep the honest opinions coming Ola. The fact that some people call you an asshole, means you're doing a good job.
Why don't you do both? Just try to make it chug in the clean channel (as most people would use a distortion pedal, I guess), and then plug it in the FX loop right after that in one single video. Or the other way around idk
He used to do this in his old vids
More work but although a multi fx user I suppose they're both valid ways to use a pedal. I guess in front of the preamp would be the "right" way if one wants to use the clean channel on the amp.
Renato Domingues, well, he doesn’t have to do any work regarding making opinion videos about gear, right? I don’t see the Gestapo over there forcing anything on him. He can go drive a taxi instead.
If you’re going to make judgments about pedals, connect them both ways, and then give an opinion. There is no excuse of it’s “more work.” It would be “more work” to anesthetize you before removing your tonsils, but I’m sure you would insist upon it anyway.
"Is this a lead some people want really?". HELL NO!
Maybe it would sit better in a mix? But just like that, no thanks
Fantastic for Smashing Pumpkins.
the boost knob should never go more then 9 o'clock especially when he had much treble already...but a mid boost would still work better for lead
@@kesamek8537 Yeah, if you mean literally smash pumpkins and destroy everyone's ears LOL
That top boost tone sounded like a line 6 spider amp on max gain
Ive always loved that Behringer pedal. Theyve been making them for years and they sound incredible, crisp.
That boss ds1x sounds amazing.
Also, the maple neck in that guitar is gorgeous
I had the EHX Metal Muff for about 3 years, and I had never used the top boost for anything. I was gladly surprised with the behringer. Thanks for this comparisson!
Make a JC-120 chug
Behringer was definitely my favorite, with the powerball being my second favorite. That price point difference makes it an ever easier choice.
finally a more varied selection of riffs
I bought the behringer because it sounds amazing when Ola made the "will it chug" and I'm still happy with the purchase. to be so cheap it is versatile and a distortion that sounds brutal is achieved. Behringer's must be grateful to Ola
Well, it's obvious that some pedals sound better in the fx loop, and others sound better in a clean channel.
You'll need to do both from now on ;-)
Liked the clarity of the Metal Muff. I like the Behringer over all.
I do own the Behringer. I got it because 1) it had many different sounds and 2) it works as a DI.
Me: Hey mom can we get Bleed
Mom: but we have Bleed at home
Bleed at home: 7:17
I wouldn't use any of those with this configuration, maybe the Behringer. The Boss DS1X demo you did in a previous video blasts everything else away! That is the way to connect that pedal.
My guess is that the top boost has extra levels just in case youre playing a guitar with potatoes instead of pickups
😂😂😂
Get new material cookie cutter
I said it in the original and I'll say it here again: the EHX Metal Muff Top Boost is enormously practical when playing in an actual band (and without having a GOOD technician doing a full monitoring on every instrument) since the frequencies cut through everything so well.
In a extreme metal band where the rhythm tone already is completely ridicously over the top, you sometimes need that. And I'll say most of the mixed lead sounds I have every used sound like ass on their own (a lot of rythm tones as well btw).
Hi, Ola! Can you try to replicate the ,,Tomb of the mutilated" tone? I think it sounds awesome!
Greetings from Bulgaria!
he did in the "cannibal corpse gear" video, just a mesa boogie rectifier boosted with a metal zone/ts9
What AnthonyEsquer
said. Cannibal Corpse are well known for having used a metal zone boosting Mesa Rectifiers on some early albums. Do you know the band Enthrallment from your country? Very good death metal band who were influenced by C.Corpse in their early days.
I totally agree, the Behringer is the best of the 4 in this setup. It's not my type of sound but the value for money is great
Cool shootout! I dig the Behringer! Just started saving for my first Solar Guitar...wanna get the A 1.7D! I’ve successfully quit smoking after many tries, so now putting all the money I’ve would have spent on smokes in a seperate account, and when I have enough I will purchase it!! Can’t wait! Love this channel Ola!!!
To my ears, in this setting the ENGL and Behringer sounded good, while the Boss and the MetalMuff sounded like ass
I have to agree....and I like EHX pedals. ✌️
Awesome recap dude!!Super fair!!!
For the tones I prefer I would use in this order.
Not saying the other pedals wouldn't be great for other applications
1. Behringer V-Tone Guitar GDI 21
2. Boss DS-1X Distortion.
3. Electro Harmonix Metal Muff w. Top Boost
4. The Engl Powerball Distortion Pedal.
Fortnite power amp
What a proud of my little and underrated Behringer GDI 21! It saves you a lot in live situations when you don't know what amp is in the house.
Ola: "I don't favor any brand"
Uses a Fortin amp and cab :D
That doesn't mean he favors Fortin, that means he likes their cabs and power amps better than other brands, which is not the same.
Eliseo Caporale is that not favoring?
Ive said it a billion times. Distortion. Don’t send a pedal to do an amps job
The first time I ran a 6505 through a v30 oversized cab and popped a Chubberooney, I knew what tone was
Nate Hamann my exact rig...did we just become best friends?
Except the HM2. That’s unbeatable
Metal muff, Is Made to go in front of a warm ir cranked amp. And the treble boost Is Made to cut trough a mix in that context. Not strictly for "soloing". I struggled for a while until i learned that.
Am i a tard for thinking the behringer sounded amazing
Nope it’s great. The amp versions of the pedals are great too. The 2x12 combo is like $250 but it’s a real monster.
Nope. People are just gear snobs sometimes.
No, it sounds amazing
it sounds tight af
Tyler McDavid i have both the 2/12 and another amp called a VAMPire, it’s a 1/12. I like them both a lot, they got some chunk in them
I love Ola channel... And the best thing that happened to the world is him joining The Haunted... 🤘🏼🤘🏼
Ive had the metal muff for years and I have never used the top boost. Its totally useless~!!
I’ve had the metal muff for 2 years and have only used it a few times 😂😂
So is the rest of it. I’ve owned that pedal three times trying to make it sound good. Turns out it can’t be done.
Metal Muff and Behringer GDi. I used to work as a manager in a store here in Manila that caters Behringer products. As a guitarist, that GDi is cool and has a reasonable price. Thanks for the review.
For approximately only 35 bucks plus shipping...and with that sound...Behringer. Already ordered one!
I think my favorite was the Metal Muff, followed closely by the Behringer.....both of the cheaper pedals sounded better to my ears.
I had one of these Behringer V-tone in my teenagers time, i loved it.
I have the Metal Muff, Powerball and the DS X. Bruh. That Behringer smacks all of them in this video. Im having regrets now,,, RIP WALLET. Shouldve got that Behringer.
I agree with you Ola...Behringer is my choice in this video
From across the room, the Metal Muff really stood out - more bite and a distinctive sound. The other three sounded very similar across the room.
Metal Muff has been the centerpiece of my tone for a decade for a reason. Ole boy can rip.
I have the V-tone bass pedal just for doing quite recording for scratch tracks at night. It does the job.
Said it before in the Behringer will it chug vid, it slays from a price point of view, personally sounds the best to my ears!
The old saying still stands. You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people none of the time. Keep doing what you do!
