It's pretty common with major illness. They're neglected by necessity, burdened much further, and can't confide in their partner because that would add to the partner's stress. So an emotional connection with someone else where they can unburden themselves is a super strong release.

I think you misunderstand what the MIL was doing. She knows a significant amount of the time she will get with her grandchildren depends on the charity of the parent with majority custody - which in this case with be the OP/father. And there's nothing stopping the OP from letting MIL see the kids more often whether mom is there or not, especially if their in-law relationship has been rather good. It's the contentious ones where this fear of not seeing grandkids becomes more prevalent.
