@@wijcik Paying off high interest debts is a good way to go. There has been times Gail has made people pay off stuff less than a thousand right away. For the most part though, High interest first is the way to do it. Say you have an interest rate on a line of credit, about 5% with a total of 2000 in debt. You have a credit card with an interest of 27% and a total of 7000 in debt. Gee, wonder what one someone should do first!!!??!?!! you'll end up paying way more for the credit card if you leave it last compared to the line of credit. So nothing to cringe about really.

I'm happy they gifted them the opportunity to see the brother get married. It's hard to dictate whether that's a want or a necessity... the emotional impact of not being there aand feeling like an awful sister could lead to a depression.
How can you live with yourself, knowing your petty spending when you’re unemployed could cost your family their home? How can being $65,000 in debt make you “feel better”. I live on a modest pension and I’m debt free. I can’t imagine self medicating by shopping!

What I like abt Gail's shows is she reminds me of lessons I learned the hard way over my life. She then shows me what bad habits I still have that have not bitten me yet. Then explains methods to change those habits. She also shows that income level is not the problem but behavior is.

Gayle is wonderful, paying for them to go to the family wedding. These were a lovely couple. They didnt whine once, especially dad. He knuckled down and did everything he was advised to do. I hope life was better for them
Reading between the lines, it seems likely she fell into a depression after losing her job and used shopping as a remedy. Imo getting outside work and leaving the house more often would be a really positive thing for her, yes.
When Gail said that they spend $18K a months to maintain their debt, I almost threw up and it’s not even my debt. Did I understand it correctly? Were their min payments $18K?
I may be poor, but this show made me feel so good about myself, knowing that I will be able to go to sleep tonight not worrying about debt, because I thankfully have zero debt.

When the ex left, he was saying it was my fault, I needed to work harder (our son was a baby, so I worked part time, I had no access to credit cards, etc) he was sick of paying the mortgage. He then proceeded to run his cc up by 2 grand in 2 months impressing his gf........go figure 😏
I got in credit debt twice in my life - two times too many. Each time, I managed to pay it down. I now own my home and have no debt. I really hate the feeling of spending money and I enjoy being cheap and saving money. Peace of mind is priceless. This show has encouraged me to journal all of my spending again. Its really an eye-opener.
I was thinking it was perhaps from one of the budgets? One of the best things you can do for your kids though is make it feel like they aren't living in debt, especially since they have plans in motion to get out of it. And these kids specifically would be going from getting whatever to getting nothing, a couple things from the dollar store now and again I think is pretty forgivable
It's not their fault they're in that situation. The kids likely have chores. You wouldn't work for your boss if they told you that they were in debt and couldn't afford it... Not the same. But they need to learn because these habits are learned.
@@amandanicole7449 cleaning the home you live in isn't work it's part of life but my main issue is with the amount. $80 a month for both kids could help pay down the debt or be saved for their kids college. @@gdiddy3235 I would agree a few things from the dollar store is reasonable. $80 a month for both kids isn't. $10 each a month would be more reasonable.
When you do this, you reduce spending on kids. Kids get X a month, but that has to cover their wants (extra clothes, toys etc). It’s either a wash or you save money because kids know they can’t just keep asking for more
Had a water heater emergency last week. $420 for new boiler, drain the old one and take away. Then a few hours later $240 for the installation. Total $660. I had the cash at home and didn’t need to use a credit card for either expense!!
Uhm thats frightening that you thinks that is worth bragging about. If you’re near middle age you should have atleast 1/3 of your income in an emergency savings account for these kind of expenses
That's not bad for a boiler! We had to replace ours a few years ago and it was a lot more than that. We have a separate savings account for house stuff. I don't like keeping a lot of cash at home
@@pamsmith1665it's true....$600 cash isn't that much, and nobody would think that's a lot or be super proud of such a small amount if they had lots saved.
As my father in law warned me, "use it as cash and pay it off when the first bill comes!" The interest rates are usury, by yesterday's standards...few places of lodging accept cash...16 credit cards paying minimum balance? And people wonder why we have an over spending government? I vaguely remember a Flintstones cartoon where the gals run off shopping yelling, "charge it!"
I love the cash jars and the suggestion to avoid credit cards but as we move to a cashless society this will become more difficult and require people to use impulse control. I saw a news article where a state in the USA had to legislate that stores and restaurants accept cash because some had stopped accepting it. It was weird.
Moe Wilson - It was in Philly I think and other urban areas. The idea made sense (less chance of robbery, etc) but lower income people couldn’t shop there because they didn’t have credit cards. It was a discrimination thing. The “cashless” society sounds scary. The people in this series are a result of credit cards. They allow you to live beyond your means and dig a deep hole. I feel for these people. 10 years of living like you think everyone else does might take you 20 years to pay for. It breaks my heart. It makes life harder than it should be. And then wonder about their retirement. Will they have enough? How much do they have saved for their kids college? I didn’t hear anything about life insurance. They got financial obligations (their kids and home) all over the place. If one of them dies (even the wife). For all the Mom’s out there, planned meals are great. Taco Tuesday. It makes it easy. It is a gift. Meatloaf Thursday. Meatloaf sandwiches on Friday for lunch. Good Mom’s pack good lunches. As the kids get older teach them how to make the planned meal. People love to cook. Especially young people. It changes their whole eating attitude. Dad’s can be the expert on burgers and hogs and steaks over hot coals, but someone needs to make the baked potato and a good “salad”. One person can’t do it. It’s not relaxing. There needs to be a team behind him. So the good Mom (or Dad) should make the kids cook. You gotta increase the ability of your kitchen staff.
Gail could have suggested that they have a garage sale they have a lot of stuff they wouldn't make back the money they paid for it but it would help with some of their debt
I absolutely do not understand how shopping makes people feel good. It's just a chore, like doing the dishes or mowing the lawn. It's like saying, "when I feel bad, I just can't stop myself from doing the laundry and scrubbing the floor."
Dave Ramsey advises paying the one with the lowest debt moving forward. He thinks paying off debts faster adds to the resolve. It all depends on which works best for you.
His method us dumb. If you have a card at close to 30% interest with a $20k balance - he would have you paying off a $15k debt at 4% interest first. Only a moron would follow his advice when it comes to this.
This is why you use debit cards and just ONE credit card for emergencies ONLY. You can't feel the money leaving your fingers like with actual cash, you can feel it when you have to pay that interest for your credit card use with cash. It really helps you keep a perfect oversight.
Chrysi Chrysi I don’t think credit cards are that bad for people who r good with money. I pay with credit cards to get points to use for plane tickets, hotels etc... that’s make it easier to do some stuff when we r paying some of it with points. But, ya it’s not for everyone. I personally see everything in the dollars I’m paying not what I pay with real money. So if something is $4.99 I see that as $5 plus tax out of my pocket thought it’s technically from my card. That’s how I keep myself accountable to the money I spend with cards.
Credit cards aren’t evil, they’re useful for building your credit score and getting whichever benefits your card offers. They’re only a problem when you see them as “free money” and refuse to see beyond today and be responsible with it.
I love my credit card - I earn after least one free flight pet year. Plus, i get extra purchase protection. However, I do pay it off every month and pay no interest.
I think the man makes tips along with his income. If she is a trained bookkeeper she should be able to find another job. She could work at a bank or do something else in finance. It's sad that she feels depressed when she has 3 lovely kids, husband, and a nice home. It just shows you that the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence.
People need to have serious talks before they get married. It always annoys me when I see one of the spouses is irresponsible and the other one has to pay (pun intended) for it .
Credit cards are not evil when used responsibly. If you ever need a car loan or mortgage, they can demonstrate your low credit availability vs use ratio, and a proven history of you making payments on time. Not having a credit history can hurt you.
@@Ndstars1 exactly. My son has a healthy savings account and one credit card that he pays off monthly. I told him he should get other credit as well to show his ability to make payments on time.
You need credit to do anything in life...buy a house, a car, make big purchases. Credit cards can be excellent tools when used the right way. My 18 year old already has a credit card and a credit score of 760. This isn't a cash system anymore unfortunately, but rather a credit system. The better credit you have and the better you are handling it the more you can do and the more freedom you have.
If you have to hide a desperately needed $20,000 from your spouse because you know that she will squander it on crap, then you need to take a serious assessment of your relationship. This is why I'm single. I buy stuff I can afford and have zero debt. No worries about what a partner is doing to my credit.
My husband was very poor w money management. Buy buy buy. When he died I discovered he had a ton of credit cards I had to pay back. Only 1 was insured. Took up almost all of the life insurance money I received. It was awful. Any remaining money was used for his burial. No money left for me and the kids.
The problem with most of these shows is that old habits die hard and most of these people fall back into bad habits. It's not hard to make a plan. It's hard to be consistent and stick with it. Hope they were able to recover.
Wow. She has single-handedly ruined this family. not only the insane debt, which she risks losing the house and potentially bankrupting the family and leaving her kids with debts when they die....but she has created monsters who demand everything they want

@@wijcik i think she's talking about paying the one with the highest interest rate, but not sure 🤷
@@elenatella Yes, Gail’s advice is always to pay off credit cards starting with the highest interest rate. That’s what I did since it saves money in the long run.
God bless this man, because any partner who chooses to lead a whole family to the point of homelessness and a life of lack, doesn't deserve this level of patience.
Not all heroes wear capes....
He has no option, getting a divorce will get him more into debt, he will have to pay for alimony not to mention also needing to support those 2 kids
I don't understand how she's been unemployed for two years. I was fired on a friday and got TWO jobs by that monday. Not jobs that I wanted or were relevant to my job experience but something is better then nothing at all!
I think she got a little lost and maybe depressed. But he could have also have encouraged or said get a new job.
I do believe this is in canada so the job market may be different
@@abigailloar956 no she is just lazy
I thought she was bookkeeping?
@@abigailloar956 Yes, this is a Canadian show. And primarily shot in Toronto and the surrounding area. I think maybe a handful were in Manitoba or British Columbia. She had a subsequent show called Prince$$ that ran for several seasons and was a lot of fun to watch. Many of the episodes have been uploaded to UTube.
Loved Dad reading and teaching the older kids about money.❤️
This is my favorite episode! They are so supportive of each other and willing to do the work to move forward. How encouraging!
I'm happy they gifted them the opportunity to see the brother get married. It's hard to dictate whether that's a want or a necessity... the emotional impact of not being there aand feeling like an awful sister could lead to a depression.
i feel that's a need. if you fly first class and stay in a fancy hotel then that is very different.
Thank you for uploading all these... I am OBSESSED and they are nowhere to be found! Thank you thank you!
Meg Mac haha me too. I never thought I’d be obsessed with a budget and debt show
My guilty pleasure!
Same here 😊
Hulu has it
Tubi has several random seasons. Or at least they did last time I looked. They also have a few seasons of Prince$$.
I’m so impressed they are staying afloat on just $34k per year. They have a bunch of kids & a house on a small salary.
Early 2000s canada 😬 i'd hate to think of 2022 on a salary of 34k
I could never imagine paying a credit card bill with another credit card ?? .. crazy.... nevermind 16 floating around
You give the credit card company access to your bank account. My dad calls to pay.
I love Gale!!!
At the end her face just glowed with watery eyes ....u get to see ur best friend get married Soooo sincere!
I absolutely LOVE rewatching these. Gail is amazing, and passing the information along to friends and family helps them too.
How can you live with yourself, knowing your petty spending when you’re unemployed could cost your family their home? How can being $65,000 in debt make you “feel better”. I live on a modest pension and I’m debt free. I can’t imagine self medicating by shopping!
I loved this episode! I've seen so many lately where the couples don't really appreciate the help or try hard with the challenges...this couple really tried and I'm so glad they had their trip paid for!
I tried living on my version of the jars and it is FANTASTIC. I made a weekly budget that is realistic enough so I have plenty for food, household items, entertainment, etc. each week. So much stress instantly went away. I feel at peace in the supermarket, I only buy what I need for the week, and I spend money with a lot more focus and contentment. Cause no matter what, as long as I'm on budget, all is well. A wonderful feeling, thank you Gail!
What I like abt Gail's shows is she reminds me of lessons I learned the hard way over my life. She then shows me what bad habits I still have that have not bitten me yet. Then explains methods to change those habits. She also shows that income level is not the problem but behavior is.
If my husband was doing what this wife is doing I'd divorce him in a heartbeat if he didn't make an effort to change his spending.
It shows what’s more important to you. Money
@@katemiller7874 has nothing to do with what is more important or not. The female's spending was putting the family in jeopardy. Then the whole family goes down. If I had a partner that was putting us in financial jeopardy I would give them one chance to change or it is better to cut your losses and not let that partner bankrupt you.
Love this show!! The husband looks like he is about to faint at any given moment, I was praying for him.....The wife gotta get a side hustle or something!
I remember when my boys were young, they would say “just write a check “. I had to explain more than once just how that worked…..lol
When I would tell my kids we didn't have money for something, they would say very innocently
" You can just go to the bank and they will give you money."
Sooooo glad Gail gave them the trip to the wedding!!!
They have never planned meals before, well that was one of their 1st problems.
Bless her husband for hanging in there.
That's what marriage is about. We all go through ups and downs in our life span and we need to be there for our spouse through sickness and health or broke or wealthy.
This man is a loving saint.. he's one in a million ❤️
he is making less than $40,000 a year....her stress would be lower if he got a better job....saint or not
@@theseeker4700 she created the mess, he could let her clean it up herself. I never heard of such entitled ingratitude
@theseeker4700 Why can't she get a better job? Also this was 20 years ago. It wasn't a high income, but it wasn't as bad as it would be today.
Bookkeeper who has know idea how much she makes, spends and how many credit cards she has? How does she even gets any client's?
My husband’s previous doctor smoked. (He changed because we moved to a different city.) The old maxim of the cobbler’s children having no shoes has been around forever for a reason. But Yes, it’s not a good look for prospective clients.
This is my favorite episode for some reason. Thank you for uploading! Oh, that poor man...
I really like this lady to help the couple to get out of the debt. Well done, you are doing great.
Wonderful gift for the family to go to the wedding. Both parents did a great job.
This show has definitely helped me see the big picture with my finances and definitely helped me tremendously. Thank you Gail for all the advice you put out there.
The grass is always greener when you’re debt free!
Gayle is wonderful, paying for them to go to the family wedding. These were a lovely couple. They didnt whine once, especially dad. He knuckled down and did everything he was advised to do. I hope life was better for them
This women is beyond irresponsible and needs to get a job outside the home. Can't be trusted to put in enough hours at home.
she's a bookkeeping and her books are a mess????? i wouldn't trust her with my books
Exactly. She needs a salary that can be counted on She can do her other accounting as a side job.
Reading between the lines, it seems likely she fell into a depression after losing her job and used shopping as a remedy. Imo getting outside work and leaving the house more often would be a really positive thing for her, yes.
She has 3 kids. Should they watch themselves. Idiots
You know this show is old is when the Walmart has the smiling face mascot
Especially when you see the “Zellers” plastic bag! That’s an old show!
When Gail said that they spend $18K a months to maintain their debt, I almost threw up and it’s not even my debt. Did I understand it correctly? Were their min payments $18K?
I think she calculated that number. He was juggling debt to pay debt so I guess the "cost" was the average interest cost.
😲 Oh, my...
Such a lovely, sweet couple. I hope they are debt free now and the family are excelling.
I may be poor, but this show made me feel so good about myself, knowing that I will be able to go to sleep tonight not worrying about debt, because I thankfully have zero debt.
Geesh, I learned my lesson, having 5 credit cards, all maxed n it took me 5yrs to clean it up & proud to say No more cards for me since 1997!! 👠👣👠👣happy face for me!
2020 my house is paid off & 2 more car payments. Done & Retired!!! 😊🤭
Oh man I miss Zellers, and the days when dollarama was actually a dollar
Put your clothes on the line instead of wasting electricity using the dryer. If it is too cold outside put them on a clothes rack inside near your heating. Not brain surgery.
Why in the world would they give their kids $10 a wk when they are that deep in debt?
They could teach responsibility with fake money and set up a "store" in their home or $10 a month would be more reasonable.
It’s either a wash or you save money because kids know they can’t just keep asking for more
Watching this makes me wanna save more money and stop spending!
“I’m looking for boneless chicken breasts”
Ok... have u never been in a grocery store before? Like wtf lol
I’m stressed out for them honestly! Sell everything... car, house, children...jkjk😂, clothes, furniture, hair, plasma, etc.
TheeSouthernBelle Xoxo can’t sell plasma in Canada :( also if you have small veins they def can’t lol
M F Wow...why?
Had a water heater emergency last week. $420 for new boiler, drain the old one and take away. Then a few hours later $240 for the installation. Total $660. I had the cash at home and didn’t need to use a credit card for either expense!!
Uhm thats frightening that you thinks that is worth bragging about. If you’re near middle age you should have atleast 1/3 of your income in an emergency savings account for these kind of expenses
@uncleartax she never said that was ALL she had in cash. For all you know her mattress could be stuffed with cash or a safe full of money.
@@pamsmith1665 for all you know that could her savings combined over 20 years! See i can play hypothetical too.
They did well! really lovely of the show to pay to get them to the wedding as well
Who would trust her being a bookkeeper but she can’t keep up her own finances?
Nice people. I’m glad they found Gail’s help. Gail is awesome 👏
I don't bring money with me if I don't intent to spend it. keeps it very simple.
Resist the liss of cash by using it always
Gail could have suggested that they have a garage sale they have a lot of stuff they wouldn't make back the money they paid for it but it would help with some of their debt
I absolutely do not understand how shopping makes people feel good. It's just a chore, like doing the dishes or mowing the lawn. It's like saying, "when I feel bad, I just can't stop myself from doing the laundry and scrubbing the floor."
Lots of people LOVE shopping. I'm not a shopper myself, but it is super common.
They are calm and each one respects the other. that helps a lot.
Dave Ramsey advises paying the one with the lowest debt moving forward. He thinks paying off debts faster adds to the resolve.
It all depends on which works best for you.
Yup Dave suggests the snowball method and Gail suggested the avalanche method!
Chrysi Chrysi NO, you pay your regular expenses with credit cards and pay the balance immediately. You then have the benefits of rewards
Dave Ramsey would say to pay off the smallest credit card Debts first.
The avalanche method that Gail suggests actually costs less.
People need to have serious talks before they get married. It always annoys me when I see one of the spouses is irresponsible and the other one has to pay (pun intended) for it .
Gail in the voice of reason.
At age 35 I never had a credit card, just a debt card that I use for emergency. If I want something I save up for it or buy used.
Girlfriend needs to get a real job. Period. She can't handle working from home on her own.
If you have to hide a desperately needed $20,000 from your spouse because you know that she will squander it on crap, then you need to take a serious assessment of your relationship. This is why I'm single. I buy stuff I can afford and have zero debt. No worries about what a partner is doing to my credit.
This show needs to comeback!!!
And I feel bad with 15k in debt from school and a car. . . to be fair I also make horrible money so I am in pretty bad shape as well.
Obliviouz Alice never feel bad for money spent on education. I’m sure it will pay off in the long run. You can do it!
My husband was very poor w money management. Buy buy buy. When he died I discovered he had a ton of credit cards I had to pay back. Only 1 was insured. Took up almost all of the life insurance money I received. It was awful. Any remaining money was used for his burial. No money left for me and the kids.
Dang I am sorry you went through that 😢
😂😂😂😂
At the beginning, I thought dude said, "I'm a doormat" until I played again and realized he said "door man". Lmbo.
Surely the first thing you think of when you’re in debt is getting a job! What a selfish woman to burden her poor husband with all this
The problem with most of these shows is that old habits die hard and most of these people fall back into bad habits. It's not hard to make a plan. It's hard to be consistent and stick with it. Hope they were able to recover.
Wow, the ten year old getting $10 a week. Way back when I was a kid I was lucky to get .25cents a week, my parents just didn't have it.
well, this show wasn't set in the 1900's when you got your quarter a week
Wow. She has single-handedly ruined this family. not only the insane debt, which she risks losing the house and potentially bankrupting the family and leaving her kids with debts when they die....but she has created monsters who demand everything they want
Yup! And not even attractive to boot, can’t control her weight or spending.
One of the view families on this show that I actually liked.
I love these two so well done to them i hope all goes well
Hope they got debt free
What I love about Gail is she acknowledged human desire and if they showed real dedication to a certain goal she usually made sure to contribute to that goal on top of giving them the money for the debt. ❤🎉 A hardass for sure but so, so warm and so generous. Genuinely she cheered for each of her clients I feel. ❤😊
5% commission for the realtor ?!! Wow.
I like Dave Ramsey's debt snowball plan better than paying off the highest interest first. Just a thought.
It’s nice and refreshing to see people just face it head on and not complain. It’s awesome. These two just wanted to get it done.
