    Hah, these guys rule - love that studio! Funny to hear them talk about the velocity for drum hits in their ancient pc software. I used to own a Drumtraks and my mind was blown when a very talented drummer friend of a friend came over to my home studio and laid down incredibly wicked beats by just his own fingertips on my Drumtraks and the LinnDrum I also had at the time. All of us in the room were in awe of his latin percussion skills shining brightly thru drum machine sounds. Made my computer sequencing and other attempts to make some funk seem so feeble. But I stuck to it and once you learn the machines you can do so much, always progressing is the key. Much respect to these two guys for laying it down in an old school way that really works.

    I love Chromeo's music - These guys were gigging in Leeds (U.K.) a couple of years ago - Unfortunately I was in hospital at the time - I would have loved to have seen them - Cannot even get a hold of their albums in U.K. -Tried HMV no joy ! - Unless you use i - tunes or use the web - Don't like MP3's & prefer new rather than second hand - Any way there is my gripe - Apart from getting a better distribution set up - There is nothing wrong about these guys - Their music is Fab ! - When I try to describe them to my mates - I tell them that they are a duo who use todays tech. to make 80's style electro funk music - They invite us into their world where if todays tech. would have been available back in the 80's this is what the music we would have been listening to!!!
    Keep up the good work guys - Keep up the great work guys & I'll keep searching for your albums !!!

      Most of their synths aren't real. They're empty enclosures, made by their kids, or are defunct models from ebay, sold as spare parts.
      Looks impressive though. Had us all fooled, huh?
      Most of their music is made with VSTs like Sylenth and Massive. The Pentium 2 is only part of their joke on us.

      Tazmanian Ninja hahahah may as well be. Now days you cant still get all of that without having to get vintage shit. Which is great getting the best of both worlds. Some will argue its just not the same . It isnt but its pretty damn close and good emough in most cases. That n most shit around now is a sample. You dont really need the reel thing you can literally sample a sound u like and pitch it n every key. N bam you got the instrument on the software or sampler.

    For the way they are working, it's probably easier to have a separate computer for tracking (midi) and a separate computer for recording/DI/mixing/mastering/ect. Hell, it's actually a somewhat brilliant way of working, as instead of being distracted by constant tweaking, mixing, eq, and processing during a tracks composition, these guys have figured out that it's better to just compose and track first, worry about mixing later. The reason they are using Cakewalk is because early versions of Cakewalk were midi only. Sure, all DAWs have piano rolls that are capable of drawing/editing midi notes, but I think the point is they like using the old program because it doesn't have the superfluous bullshit of modern DAWs, and being pure midi, it probably has no latency, because it's not running through an audio interface with sample-buffers...although when you are drawing the notes in, latency probably isn't much of a factor, but maybe it is for them!
    The whole Cakewalk-piano-roll-to-mac thing...I think he's probably being serious. There's probably not a modern equivalent that just does midi sequencing, I think even the most basic DAWs probably have some kind of audio function. I'm sure that old Cakewalk program doesn't run on modern versions of Windows either. They'd probably like to upgrade that Pentium II...but hey, it works! Don't need much CPU power to handle midi events. It wouldn't be hard to program something similar, but I'll be damned if I'm touching the Cocoa API for something like that.

    • @justanaverageperson544
      @justanaverageperson544 8 лет назад

      Couldn't they just use Reaper for sequencing on the mac? i get the idea that simplicity of process is key but idk why they couldn't still use that process of tracking on a different pc and sequencing on another with reaper on their mac and leaving all the complicated stuff alone.

    Jesus... I've read some comments saying that they're outdated and that someone needs to introduce them to Native Instruments. People, you DON'T need to use Massive for everything. These guys are all about the retro feel. They make contemporary music using analogue synths from the past. They actually do not want or need to be introduced to Massive, or any other mainstream vst synth out there.

    He's talking about using the DAW to send midi notes to the synths, not replacing the synths with software equivalents. The DAW sends the note to the synth and records the audio coming out of the synth in return. You're still getting the same sound out of whatever you're recording the audio from.

    • @ventarfield7115
      @ventarfield7115 10 лет назад +5

      Just adjusting the velocity of each drum instrument hit to swing and blend together to create rhythm, punch and space. A real drummer does not hit the hi hat or the snare the same every time. Some hits are fast or hard or light to accentuate the feel of the drum beat. So they are changing the velocities to sound a little more human. Listen to hi hats and you will notice that some are soft and some are more pronounced (maybe after the snare hits). Hope that helps
