When I was 11 years old, studying classical music, my friends mom played Jamiroquai (Virtual Insanity) and I heard it for the first time. Classical music was all that I knew and I remember saying "EVERYTHING SOUNDS WRONG! ALL THE CHORDS ARE WRONG!" Here I am now, 20 years later, in absolutely love with funk and gleefully ashamed of my reaction but now getting the most incredible keyboard lesson from a living legend!!! Took me a while but I'm here now Matt!!! 😆😆😆
Phenomenal funk. I'm still kind of in awe that Matt friggin Johnson from Jamiroquai is teaching me to play keys. It's like I hit the funk lottery. You might be a white cat from England bro, but so was Alan Hawkshaw and he blows my mind on the reg, just like you. Much love homie.
Matt’s comment about “emphasizing the one by not playing it” was an epiphany and mirrored a tutorial I saw by Carol Kaye where she used a metronome but slowed it down to half speed and practiced to it with the “click” on the two and four” instead of 1,2,3,4 and it forced you to groove with it better. Mind blown
It's nice to see the Adic Jazz / Funk heroes of the 90s and 2000s emerge again. Bluey has his own radio show at Apple Music (Groove Velocity) and you, Matt, with these videos. I just love it.
I bought the tutorial from his web site and have been working on it constantly for over a week. I just now have it up to 120 bpm. It’s very demanding (for me) chop wise, but the benefits of mastering it will improve your funk and overall playing. I’ll keep hammering it and expand it. I highly recommend buying the video because it contains a lot more information and Matt demonstrating than the RUclips video.
Those tracksuit stripes are there to simply transfer that high energy FUNK to the fingers. I’ve experimented too much, got to a five stripe from JD Sports trash bin and singed my nails off. You’ve been warned.
I loved this. Every bit! 25 years removed from my last funk band gig and you made me fall in love with it again. More please! I've been a fan of the band since Emergency on Planet earth and I actually own every CD!
Those pitch bend wiggles are the thing though ❤️ I'm predominantly a guitarist with pretty minimal theory but a decent enough ear, and jamming along with these videos and getting little shout outs for the chord changes and various intervals is really helping me put sounds to the numbers. Thanks, @Matt
This is the kind of content I have absolutely no intention to even try to repeat after, but still absolutely love watching. Big up from Finland, you're rocking it!
Being a 90's kid Jamiroquai was one of my favorites growing up. I have always loved funky music. Matt you are the Jamiroquai sound. I'm so glad I found your channel.
Damn, I started trying to learn to play around 20 years ago and went nowhere... now Ive progressed more in a few ultra cool videos than during many years. Dude you are the best.
You're just simply one of the most fantastic people with a great vibe on RUclips. I really appreciate you and the videos that you share. There are a lot of talented musicians on RUclips but a very small percentage with your kind of combination vibe and energy. Sending you great vibes and awesome energy for me here in California US💪🏼👍🏼✌🏼
One thing that would make this even better is referring to keys and chords by their SCALE DEGREE as well as their name. I know it's not to hard to work out what's what, but like adding the overlay, it makes it easier to figure out whats going on immediately rather than pausing and trying to figure out where your hands are.
Need some help with this...I’m guessing he’s in F major for the first riff, but I can’t figure out why he keeps saying it’s 1 chord, seems like it’s 2 chords
I'd just like to take this moment to recognise, that this strong force that Matt talks about, it is what keeps people moving so well on the longer extended tracks in the jamiroquai live concerts. Really. It stands highly by itself IMO but also as a surrogate, when jay knows it's all firing together, that is when he is in his element as far as I believe, and these are the great moments. The dancing comes through, the vocal reactions, and round it goes, with the band responding and the circuit alive. It's great. 👍🏻👍🏻
I had a pretty in depth discussion with my dad recently about culture turning against tradition, and divisive, degenerate type figures being pushed in music. I dont know if popular musicians accentuate their degenerate traits to build a character that is more interesting for the cameras, or they are actually like this. It's refreshing to see Matt, a literal legend of the funk world who's down to earth, knowledgeable and happy to share his knowledge. Thanks Matt, I hope I can see you live one day.
Jamiroquai is my favorite band of all time. It’s Music First. And these lessons not only made me buy the Yamaha Montage 8 but appriciate Matt Johnson and Jamiroquai so much, I hope to bring back something with my music some day. Cheers from Southern Finland
I couldn't for my life understand how they groove. Funk seemed so inaccessible and technical but you explain the basic structure beautifully and it no longer looks impossible. Thank you
Matt you are the damn man!! Thank you for your damn infectious funkiness and astute pinpoint notion to stall out the noodling proclivity that can run away within us all and utterly KILL the groove. You made it cool to crop out the cook that might otherwise ruin our recipe for popping fresh f0nk!! You are a great teacher and really fun to learn from. THANK YOU GOOD SIR!
Started playing this last weekend, and this weekend it seems to be in my muscle memory. It's not easy, but that's what makes me keep trying. I'm determined to figure this out. The syncopation is so much fun, but I've never been good at playing it. Not a funk player, but I will be! Thank you for being you!
Never ever i will can play keyboards like that, not near of this... but I enjoyed the middle of my life with yous music, yesterday, today, and forever 😂
The nicest man in Pop? If he's not doing it already he'd be a fantastic teacher - his effortless knowledge of funk and its technical secrets needs to be passed on to the next generation!
Just starting on my funk piano journey now, never thought I could play it. Thank you Matt for your videos they inspire me to become the cool player that’s hiding inside!
Wow, never knew I could do some of these things until I saw this video. Really unlocked something especially while playing along to a drum machine. Thanks for this and your other wonderful tutorials!
I just love listening to your fine British accent, lad! Reminds me of a visit I once paid to my British pen pal, decades back from now. I was a pupil in German high school at the time. Oh. and your music, it is so adorably funky, love it 👍👍
There´s nothing more to say than - "play that funky music white boy" 😎👍 I like the stories and your funk! Can remember when Jamiroquai was running all the time, when we played pool a lot, in the 90s Groovie baby 😎
Wow tremendous video. It’s the second I see from you. Beside a hood musician, great teacher. I subscribed to your channel. It’s a blessing. From Tampa Florida USA
Damn Matt - you are such an AMAZING funk keyboard player, and it’s soooo fun watching you play with such ease and making it look sooo simple...and offcourse it isn’t... Can’t wait to see you play live with Jamiroquai - hopefully soon...Cheers and keep it up, it’s just brilliant mate!
So happy I found your channel. I learned music/instruments always by great idols, I wanted to sound like. This is how I learned beatboxing, Guitar, and this channel is my entry card to keys! Thank you so much!
Discovered jamiroquai for the first time after coming across your videos. Thank you so much for having a youtube channel! I love watching you play! Very inpiring the sauce is right here man
These videos are precious. I've been training the Moog bass for a couple of weeks and I think this will be the next thing to learn - at least to my capabilities. Thanks Matt!
Great video as always! Love the beginning and as long as the music carries on by people that really care about the art and origins and credit is given, it's all funkin good! I think the only issue arises when revisionist history occurs towards art, i.e. rock origins. But a great musicians and teacher is a great musician and teacher regardless! You're a funk master!
Matt, you're great! The British put their own unique spin on it. Jamiroquai, Incognito, Level 42, and so on. Brits have their own kind of funk, that the US can't come close to.💪💪💪💪
this is also the theory that makes sampling with an akai mpc work so well . the ones always tie the sample together in much the same way we play on keys or bass . funk is by far the most addictive to write especially if you are into the groove for dancing. cant get enough of it
Bloody awesome Vid, loved it and the message, it’s one of the reasons Jamiroquai has me hooked with there live Jams, the way you guys mix it up is Epic !!! But love the tuition and chords so god dam Funky 🙏🏻😎🎹🙌🏻💥🎶🔥
Wow! Now that’s some serious funk! Great lesson, loads of hints and tricks to get grooving, thank you so much for advices and foremost the good vibes you share with us. At 16’ playing that typical 80’s e-piano sound made famous by the late DX7 with that pitch modulated riff makes me hear horns arrangements. And the first section with the phased clavinet is just awesome! Thank you again, all the best from the other side of the Channel in sunny Normandy.
I just love this channel Matt - always look forward to learning a bit more about putting some real mojo into your playing and really developing some style. Thank you!
funk don't care about race creed or color.... the best thing ive heard in a while thank you

Great message at the beginning about the funk. This is someone who truly knows what the funk and music is all about. Cheers Matt
I agree!
Thank you McChicken master for your approval of this message.

Exactly my thoughts!
Alan Hawkshaw, Rod Temperton… the list of British white funk lovecats just goes on and on like a rolling stone!
You are the shining nova for us synth nerds and keyboard enthusiasts
What I love here is how much fun you're having. That's the soul of it.
So selfless and valuable of you to do all this Matt! And a huge inspiration for me to practice, too. Thank you.

@@lanmichaelmix2818 yeah. I'm waiting for the people from Galliano and Brand New Heavies to appear as well :-)
The alchemy of something which appears so simple yet unlocks so much depth of possibility...simple map to a rabbit hole of funk goodness
Matt that keyboard overlay is a brilliant help to us trying to learn. Many thanks.
As a bass player I can confirm this made me even more funky. 🙂
Thanks for slowing it down a bit. As soon as you start playing it makes me smile.
This dude is a bad ass player...his left hand is a killer😮
if the white guy from england teaching me funk is matt johnson from jamiroquai then i'm listening no questions asked

Thanks Matt! The virtual keyboard showing your button presses is a great addition!
That screen keyboard overlay is sharp! Wow! 😸 ~7
Does anyone know how to add that overlay to videos?
The overlay is very helpful. When I asked about it a while back, folks clowned me. I'm glad Matt added it.
