Marzipan is a sweetened almond paste/candy. Frangipane is an almond 'cream' of French origin. Both use almond extract or almond oil to get their distinct almond flavor. So Josh is right, the cookies you made probably do taste like marzipan or frangipane, since the almond extract is what gives that special flavor... very common in European desserts, so it makes sense that his Dutch family would be familiar with this flavor.
Maraschino cherries are pie cherries that have been pickled and then flavored with sugar and Maraschino (also called Maraska liqueur), a liqueur made from Marasca cherries. Cherries and almonds are in the same genus, Prunus, and both use cyanogenic glycosides to protect themselves from insect pests, especially the leaves and kernels. So they all share the same general flavor characteristics. Almonds are most closely related to apricots and the almonds used for almond extract are bitter almonds which have higher concentrations of cyanogenic glycosides. In low doses cyanogenic glycosides seem to improve respiratory health but we can't handle high doses (we have evolved to taste them as incredibly bitter which is why bitter almonds taste so bad, because they have enough of them to make us sick). If you ever prune a tree in the genus Prunus you will experience the same smell and the same flavor and aroma is imparted in the smoke which is why cherry wood pellets are available for smoking meats and fish.
We all make mistakes or misread things. When I was pregnant, I had such terrible pregnancy brain! I once left the phone in the fridge and spent the entire day looking for it. Apparently, I was so hungry, that I put down the phone while grabbing a snack, and shut the door lol! It happens! You’re doing amazing!
I am always looking for my phone when I am talking to my mom. She will ask me what are you doing? I say looking for my phone I can’t find it. She says the one you are talking on lol. Only me I swear.
Seeing how you adjust when a recipe isn't turning out perfectly is actually extremely helpful to me! As someone who is just learning to cook (you've inspired me so much) I don't instinctively know what to do when a recipe goes wrong. It really helps me when I can see a cook get herself out of those situations and save the dish, instead of just assuming it's unsalvageable. Thank you for inspiring and teaching and reminding us to having compassion for ourselves. 💓🙏
Real cooking, darling! You don't give yourself enough cred! You're a rockstar in the kitchen.

Plant some chives, they're perennial, work just like green onions. You could grow them & other herbs in your sunroom, Becky. A little bit of Worcestershire Sauce in with your cheeseball mix adds great flavor, too.
I finally added onion and garlic chives to my garden last year and they are producing so much now and I love them. They come in handy when I need more green onion tops for recipes! And my favorite is the garlic chivea:-)
Chives are something you can start in a cool spot indoors. All the better if they have some natural sun light (hint: by the slider in the basement). They take what seems like a long time to germinate and be ready for outdoors so many begin them in November or December. They do germinate better in slightly cooler temperatures but can also hang out and grow indoors if you seeded them a little early.

@@terryhenderson424 I've grown them outside in an old wooden box by the hose connection. They will spread and fill whatever container you sow them in. They can also be dried, ground up, & used like onion powder. They make a pretty purple flower that looks nice in a bouquet too.
My sister, you are just so resilient and positive! We all have the occasional rough day in the kitchen but you just handle it with style and grace. Thanks for not cutting that out. What a lesson on self conduct!
Out of all of your videos and all of the many things I have watched you make when you added the salt it was the only time I thought you did something I wouldn’t do. Bless your heart for leaving your mistakes in. Too many RUclipsrs try to look perfect and it just isn’t realistic. One of the many things we love about you is how real you keep things. Thank you for that and for all of the yummy recipes for Halloween.🎃👻 🎃
I absolutely love that you don't edit out the mistakes (goodness we all have those days).....instead you show how to make it work! Love it! I learn so much more when mistakes occur. I believe they make us much better cooks.
I love, love, love this episode. All the errors and then finding ways to correct them through taste, additions, substitutions or whatever else, is so refreshing and informative. Keeping it real and showing us to succeed despite mistakes is so inspirational! Great job, Becky!
Seriously, thank you so much for not editing out the parts where there were struggles. I can only speak for myself, but watching someone who is a BOSS in the kitchen make mistakes and recover really helps someone like me who is learning and growing confidence. It is so easy to tell ourselves that making mistakes means we just aren't cut out for it. But seeing you overcome and self-correct really helps! Much love!
I’m actually super thankful for your mistakes. Learning how to recover from a recipe mistake is honestly more valuable to me than seeing it come together perfectly.
Re: cutting out the cheeseball-- I'm so glad you show us how to CORRECT the mistake! Some wouldn't know to add in more stuff. Thank you for your transparency!
Thank you so much for keeping your mistakes in your videos. Honestly seeing you make mistakes and be able to recover from them - or even just be able to give yourself grace when you can’t fix it - has helped me to gain confidence and reduce my anxiety with cooking and home projects ❤
OMDog those fingers were amazingly spooky!!! And those spiders were incredible!!! Don’t be so hard on yourself, it’s called pregnancy brain and every woman has gone through it, to see you fix everything makes me jealous I just dumped and cried every time I made a mistake in the kitchen. So much love to you and Josh, he’s so supportive ❤❤❤
I love that you show real baking and cooking. Stuff happens that's not always in your favor and you don't cut it out of your video. Thank you for being real.
Thank you for not over editing. I've been a cook for 45 years and these "opportunities" still happen to me often. Always look forward to your videos. 😍
Becky, I love the fact that you are "normal" like the rest of us and have a few mishaps. Don't ever edit those out! I think it is so cute when you do taste tests because your eyes get so huge! Lol! I never make cheeseballs, but I have a sister-in-law every function that is what she brings. Great show!
I am saving the video for bedtime relaxation, but I just had to tell you that today I did three desserts and a double batch of homemade meatballs as well as a special dip for our family Halloween party. Everything was planned out for the cooking session AND-I used parchment paper to line the baking sheets and the counter for easier clean-up! All inspired from spending time with YOU, Becky!!!😊🎃
My mother in law has always had a designated cotton tablecloth that she spreads on the bench before she cooks. She does this when she is making pies and scones and other pastries. She actually flours the area and rolls on the tablecloth, nothing sticks. When she is doing just a couple of cakes she uses a small tablecloth about a metre square. She said her mother always used a piece of calico to do her baking. When you have finished baking, she rolls it up and takes it outside and shakes it so the scraps are spread for her birds that visit every day. The cloth is then washed and returned to the tea towel draw for the next time. I have been using her method for at least 20 years and will not change, it saves so much mess and all I have to do is roll the tablecloth up and the area is clean.
I am absolutely dying over those witches fingers!!! I've seen the recipe several times before, but never watched someone make them. They're so much better than I even imagined. I reeeeeeally want to try to make them now! And, to be honest, I love seeing your mishaps in the kitchen. They're such a normal part of trying new recipes, and cooking in general. It makes your videos relatable, and also shows that a beautiful delicious product is still totally achievable, even when things don't go totally as planned. ♥️ I appreciate the transparency.
Becky, I have to tell you what a breath of fresh air you are. We all learn so much from you. I’m 69 and I’ve learned a great deal from you. Thank you so much for your sweet personality and amazing knowledge!
Everyone has a crazy day in the kitchen now and then! You got a double whammy today with your TRICK or treat baking plus pregnancy brain ( yes it is a real thing!). People love you because you are so sweet and calm, even when things go askew! Precious girl, everyone wants to see you and your family succeed in all you do. Bless you and yours!
Becky, the reason I watch your channel and enjoy it so much is because you are real. When you show your mistakes or your little messes it makes the rest of us feel like it's okay when we make mistakes or make a little messes. We are real people figuring things out as we go. And that's what we enjoy so much about you!
Please dear Becky please don't put your knives in the dishwasher. I have seen you do that several times. That is the quickest way to dull your knives. Hand wash and immediately dry. No need to invest in expensive knives then dishwasher them. It defeats the purpose. Thought I would just pass on valuable info.
Since I am Dutch I know exactly what Josh's parents are missing from the Netherlands: banketstaaf and also ask them about borstplaat and suikerbeesten, I am sure they will know what that is! Oh and the last is filled speculaas rolls of course with almond past:) 😀thanks for all your hard work and thanks for sharing!

Thanks Becky- I am glad I am not the only one that flies by the seat of my pants on adapting recipes ❤❤ Yes it is real life cooking!! I love when I see you post because it is a bright spot to my day! 🌼🌻🌼
As someone who hasn’t built the best cooking skills, I SO appreciate you showing us the errors you make. Oftentimes I throw away what I do or just don’t ever do it again out of frustration. But seeing you over the year just reminds me that you just gotta go for it, learn as you go, and learn from your mustakes❤
Hi Becky. The one thing I can say about us being in your kitchen with you is that it is always fun and so so real! You handle the "oops" with such grace and seamlessly "right the ship!" The fingers, mummies, spiders and pumpkin turned out amazing! Thank you for sharing all your goodness with us. Hugs.
I like when you show mistakes in cooking. It is better to adjust then to waste. People make mistakes in cooking all the time and need the confidence to know it can be fixed or turn into something else. The cheese ball spread would be good on a cooked pizza crust with fresh veggies and cheese sprinkled on (pillsbury has a great recipe).
I love how normal you are on your channel. You just go with the flow and adapt where needed. When I watch your videos I feel like we are cooking together. I have tried many of your recipes and have been so happy with them. Thanks for letting me be a part of your community.
Becky, I think we all have days when we feel like everything we touch is going wrong. I am so glad to to you see that you keep working through it. You are very great to watch because of your honesty about things going wrong for you.
Becky, I just found you a few weeks ago and thank the Lord for you!! I am so thankful even at 65, for the invaluable help and teachings that you provide for us. Praying for many blessings on your beautiful family!
You are such an inspiration girl! Your energy and love for life shine through in every episode. I'm 75 and you have given me such joy...God bless you and Josh
Thank you for being real with us, Becky. Not only do you show us your mistakes, but how you overcome them. With so many beginning cooks in your audience, that is FAR more encouraging and helpful than showing perfection.
Thank you for your transparency regarding mistakes. As an Executive Chef, the two most important things we learn and teach are, #1, learning how to adapt and make the very best recipe you can with whatever ingredients you have on hand, and #2, knowing how to fix mistakes, making substitutions and corrections when necessary to fix food so it never gets wasted. In your videos, I've seen you do both these things and I applaud you for not editing. Yours is truly a real kitchen 💖
ONE of my favourite parts about watching your channel is that you share all the parts of cooking and not just the perfect parts as I find it really encouraging and it has helped me build confidence in the kitchen and have fun trying new recipes. Thank you 😊
I have found that since I started weighing my flour, my baked goods have gone to the next level! If you don’t want to weigh, fluff your flour in your container and use a spoon to scoop it into your measuring cup then level the top off. I think you’ll notice a difference in the finished product!
It's comforting to know someone else has speed bumps in the kitchen. I'm a grandma raising my 7 grandbabies and 2 great grandbabies. We do a lot of cooking and I have to, what I call tweek the recipe. It's all made with love.
Love how you left in the “mistakes” and how you fixed them. Everyone has done this in the kitchen and have lots of different things that we are preparing. It’s great that you show how it’s not the end of the world
Becky thank you so much for being so transparent in the kitchen. Because you give us all courage to get in the kitchen and prepare awesomeness. I watch every video and enjoy your humble and beautiful character.
I love watching you, I’m English but have retired to Portugal and have lived here now for 8 years. I have learned so much from You tubers and especially loved this video. I love to cook and have made all the mistakes that you have but not always rescued as well as you. Keep ‘em coming Becky you’re a star 🌟
I love how you keep it real. Don't edit the mistakes out, because we learn from you how to fix our mistakes. Also I made a party chicken one time and we shapped it into a hand with little onion slivers for nails.
Becky, you keep it so real, and you have a lot of courage to put your mistakes out there..we all make them! Anyone that does any appreciable amount of work in the kitchen has felt the frustration of things going wrong.. sometimes we feel defeated, we swear under our breath and then we move on and recover somehow. You should be gaining confidence because you are a kitchen hero!! You came into all this winging it, as they say, and are becoming a real pro!! On top of all that you are so incredibly generous with your time, effort and resources. All of this is what makes you an amazing human being and role model.
I’m so upset I’m watching this after Halloween! I love all these recipes. You knocked it out of the park on this one. I bet everyone loved all the goodies. I hope I can remember these for next year.
I love that you leave in the mistakes, so much is learned by experience. It has inspired me to try recipes I never would have dared before, knowing it doesn’t have to be perfect the first time around, or the second or third time 😅
Little late to the party but what I admire about you is you don't cut out the mistakes and Ooops from your videos. I really appreciate that about you. You aren't trying to be perfect but to be real. Love your channel!
Hello Becky my dearest “FRIEND” your video today showed all of us how to persevere through our mistakes, and triumph at the end!! Your precious little one when baby arrives will enjoy hearing your calm and soothing tone of voice. Have fun at the party. Happy Halloween 🎃 👻
One great thing to always have handy, is dehydrated (or for you: freeze dried?) leeks. If you had that, you could’ve used it in place of the green onions. I love my leek powder, actually my dehydrator is running now, stuffed with leeks for a new batch of powder, as I was running low… One great thing with making such powder too, is that you can use the whole leek, I only remove the outer layer, cut through it back to the root (leave the root intact) - makes it so easy to clean them before cutting them in slices for dehydrati9n! YUM! 🤗 💓💚🌱🍀🌱💚
A good cook isn't necessarily a perfect cook and you're a great family cook! It's refreshing to see someone else besides me makes boo boos and messes, forgets to reread recipes... You recover from your mistakes nicely...that to me is a good cook. I'm 67 and learned quite a bit from you, Becky. Always look forward to your videos.
Thank you for the Halloween fun in the kitchen. When my kiddos were home, I used to do all kinds of holiday treats. I did lots of cakes and cupcakes for our church’s annual Harvest Festival. My kids dressed in “ non” scary costumes and went to our church where there were games and food and the ever popular cake walk. I hope you had fun at the party. Thanks for sharing your day with me!
Becky, Thanks so much for showing your mistakes and also how to overcome them. I am an old grandma but appreciated you showing this for all the newer cooks, bakers. Even as an older woman I goof up sometimes!
Oh Becky, your Halloween goodies are just the cutest!! I love that you share the 'real' you, feelings, mistakes, adjustments, and all. By being honest, you are much more enjoyable and relatable to watch.. ❤❤
I bet everyone enjoyed all the treats! The pumpkin cheese ball looks so yummy! One of my coworkers has a physician for a wife, and every Halloween she made the witches fingers- quite realistic, but instead of jam she used that gel icing in the squeeze tubes. She also made little truffle cookies and made them look like eye balls. I like your mummies! And the spiders look so cute too! What fun!!! Cheers from 🇨🇦Calgary, Alberta🇨🇦
Well, Becky, this has actually been a very beneficial video today. You crossed over a number of shortfalls and still pulled it off, giving us solutions along the way. And you are doing this! We are just watching, haha. Everything looked wonderful. Proud of you again.
Becky, I have to add it is an absolute delight watching your video's, whether cooking, baking or gardening. This video was especially entertaining because you aren't used to making these holiday treats, but your great attitude when making mistakes is so much like mine. Laugh and carry on!
I make those peanut butter cookies for Christmas every year (same recipe you used), but we call them peanut butter blossoms, and put a Hershey's Kiss on top. They are one of my favorite cookies. 🥰
We put Brachs stars on top of the peanut butter blossom cookie instead of Hershey's Kisses because we found that it's easier to bite down on a chocolate star so that you get equal distribution of chocolate and peanut butter cookie in each bite. Plus, you don't have to mess with unwrapping the foil from a Hershey's kiss!
Hi Becky I really enjoy watching 👀 all your projects. Remember you are human like the rest of us. Ok you make the odd error but more often than not you discover it and recover well from it. We all have awkward days at one time or another. Just grab yourself a nice cup of coffee deep breath forgive yourself and carry on with your projects. Your doing 👍👍👍 just enjoy your day 🌞

I put wash your sister sauce (Worcestershire) in my cheeseball too!
She could also dry green onions, herbs, and have them whenever she needs them.
They make a pretty purple flower that looks nice in a bouquet too.
i love how you show us its ok to mess up and normally there is a fix. thanks.
Do you have any idea how comfortable you are making the rest of us feel when you have an oops? Thank you❤
My sister, you are just so resilient and positive! We all have the occasional rough day in the kitchen but you just handle it with style and grace. Thanks for not cutting that out. What a lesson on self conduct!
Pregnancy brain is a real thing. So impressed how you brought it all together anyway without getting frustrated. You're the best Becky!
That is what makes her relatable and hysterical! i agree 100% with you.
Exactly, that's is reality. Flubs and fixes on the spot are real life.
That left over cheese ball mix would be perfect in some stuffed mushrooms!
Thank you so much for keeping your mistakes in your videos. Honestly seeing you make mistakes and be able to recover from them - or even just be able to give yourself grace when you can’t fix it - has helped me to gain confidence and reduce my anxiety with cooking and home projects ❤
She pulled a Bob Ross in the kitchen! “No mistakes, just happy little accidents!” ❤
@JaniceBattle ❤️🤯 You have blown my mind. I love this! I will be doing it in my kitchen. Thank you!!
100% pregnancy brain. It made me smile actually. I’ve been there several times over and you taking it all in stride was endearing to watch.
This is exactly what I was thinking. Pregnancy brain gets the best of us 😂
Becky, the reason I watch your channel and enjoy it so much is because you are real. When you show your mistakes or your little messes it makes the rest of us feel like it's okay when we make mistakes or make a little messes. We are real people figuring things out as we go. And that's what we enjoy so much about you!
Hi Amy how are you doing?
Bet that cream cheese mix would be a super yummy filling for ravioli or tortellini❗️ YUM! 😋🤗
Hou eens op ... Ik heb honger!!! 😂😂
kerststol, ook lekker
Thanks for you're reaction.. I really had no idea what she meant by banket and Christmas 🤣🤣🤣 I'm also dutch 🤣
Becky, this video is exactly why we love you! You are teaching us and so unafraid of showing what can go wrong! We have a new phrase around our house that " we are channeling our inner Becky!" Thanks for all you do.
I was so excited when I received this notification today. 😀 Thank you for not editing your oops out. No need to feel embarrassed, as 1. you're human and 2. we all do stuff like that. Enjoy.
I thought I was the only one who made mistakes reading recipes 🤪🤣, but now you're TEACHING how to improvise and CORRECT mistakes! You're awesome! Thank you! Onward and upward! 🙌
Great idea! I actually thought I’d like it as a sandwich filling too. Looks really tasty!
What a great idea, I bet it would be really tasty on pizza.
Your kids are going to love having a Mom that bakes Halloween cookies.
THIS WAS SO MUCH FUN AND SO VERY CUTE. YOU MADE SO MUCH! ENJOY THE PARTY!
Don’t ever change Becky….we all make mistakes! I am so glad you can be real with your friends, we are all rooting for your success!😊
I tried your no- knead bread today. It was amazing!
I love how you took a problem, thought about it and fixed it with such grace. If no one has told you and Josh yet its marzipan.
I watch every video and enjoy your humble and beautiful character.
them spiders look so good i wish i had one
Love your channel!
i used to make those finger cookies for my kids school class for their halloween party! Brought back memories.
We are learning so much when you have to adapt -- thanks for keeping it real!
Honey, no need to be embarrassed in front of us. We love and adore you! You're a fantastic cook! I really enjoy watching a real kitchen operate. 🥰
Seeing you make mistakes and recovering is very encouraging. I find myself saying “that’s ok” when I goof in the kitchen. Thanks for being real.
I hope you & Josh have had a wonderful weekend! (And baby Acre Homestead!) Have a wonderful week y'all!! 😊
Hi Becky, I have also over salted food, so I add a little salt at at a time and taste after each addition.
Love the transparency and the bright attitude. Everything looked great. ❤❤❤
I’ve lessened the sugar in my moms banana bread recipe and it always turns out great!
Oh Becky, your Halloween goodies are just the cutest!! I love that you share the 'real' you, feelings, mistakes, adjustments, and all. By being honest, you are much more enjoyable and relatable to watch.. ❤❤
The "real" aspects of your RUclips channel is what makes us all love you so much Becky!
The mummies are adorable! Thank you for sharing your day with me! 👀🕸️
Real life in the kitchen! I love how you keep it real. THIS is how it is!
Becky you are going to be the cool homeroom mom who makes all the cool treats! You are glowing and beautiful ❤️
I love Sunday afternoon in the kitchen with Becky.❤
All of the eyes make everything soooooo cute! So much fun in your kitchen this day! ❤❤❤❤🎃🎃🎃
I love how you told us how to fix some mistakes that I really wouldn't have known, thank you Becky
Your doing 👍👍👍 just enjoy your day 🌞
Please don’t be embarrassed as you teach us how to adapt when we do the same thing! You do a spectacular job!❤️👏🏻
I just loved this episode. I am not creative at all but You made it look doable. Your channel is my favorite because you do so many different things and I feel I am right with you visiting you in person. You are so talented and Josh is so supportive.
YAYYY!! Perfect Halloween treat! Sitting down with my friend Becky on a cold rainy Halloween eve! 🎃🎃🎃
I loved everything 🤩 including you not editing out the mistake! Because how you walk through the problem solving and errors helps us learn too! Thanks for sharing these fun holiday goodies with us!
Thankful you keep it real. I thought only I have these experiences. This encouraged me.
