Thanks so much for an immensely helpful video. Magic Lantern is totally worth it. All these years I've had a T3i... finally, no white focus box when testing streaming with OBS. Since I cannot get the EOS Webcam Utility working with my computer (OBS simply will not "see" the T3i as a video capture device-- even with the regular EOS Utility NOT running, even in the background), I had a couple options-- Digicam Control (DCC Webcam) -- the free software which works PERFECTLY (and seems to have a better framerate than the official EOS Webcam Utility)..... and, I bought a $20 HDMI to USB capture card, as the framerate is much faster/cleaner... but that damn white box, haha. The audio output port on a Canon 5D Mark II is only for playback mode. It doesn't have a live microphone pickup stream. For that, you need an independent external Microphone separately not the Cameras internal microphone.
5D is an excellent camera for video recording, however only if you record on it's internal Compact Flash Memory Card. If you use it for live broadcasting or recording on a PC using the HDMI out, then you will not get the full 1080P resolution. Also when recording video the Auto Focus will not work, so you have to manually focus constantly if your subject is moving.

No EOS utility does not require this. However the utility will link through USB Port, not HDMI port, and the quality is not the same. Also if you have a separate video switch or mixer you can't use the utility for it. The utility also requires Windows 10 or later.
@@vihangatech127 Yes the output video will be clean, but it is not an HDMI output, so you can't call it a Clean HDMI. It is a clean USB output which is a lower quality video compared to that of the HDMI output.

No problem! 1. Yes it should work for T5 as long as your Firmware Version is 1.0.2 builds.magiclantern.fm/1200D-102.html 2. Yes you must have the Memory Card in it if you want to Run Magic Lantern. If you remove the card the camera will load it's original default firmware just like it does now. 3. Hi, awesome video, thanks for all the detailed info. I just have one question, what cable are you using? An HDMI to usb? Is it plugged directly to the pc?
I am using a USB Video Capture card which has HDMI input on one end and USB 3.0 plug on the other end. I bought the higher end one called elgato camlink 4k, but you don't have to get that one any cheaper ones should also work fine. For example the first link is the one I have and the 2nd link is a cheaper version of that www.ebay.com/itm/175016601258 www.ebay.com/itm/195049289690
Thanks, I looked at the site and they do have one for Canon EOS M, but I am not sure if that covers EOS M6 also. So I recommend that contact the support team at www.magiclantern.fm/ and ask them if it will work for M6
Great video! I have a Canon T4i, would you recommend using 2 different SD cards, one for regular camera use with original firmware and one for streaming with the updated firmware?
Thank you, and yes that is a good idea just to be on the safe side and not to accidentally format the Compact Flash Drive in which you have the custom firmware.
CORRECTIONS, One, you do not need to backup your FIRMWARE, it's still there, Magic Lantern just runs beside it. Two, you can turn OFF the overlays (top/bottom bars) to get a 3x2 clean image, instead of a 16x9 with bars.
The firmware backup is a legal disclaimer required by Magic Lantern to release them from liability should there be any false claims. About turning off the overlay to get a clean 3x2 image is correct, but it's the same as cropping the image in post. You lose the top and bottom if you produce videos with 16:9 aspect ratio.
Since the mirror goes up when you shoot video the auto focus will not work on DSLR cameras. So leaving the Auto Focus On will not do you any good. For that you will need to use a Mirror less camera like a Canon EOS RP
Hi, that depends on the model of your camera, on some models you can, and on others you can't. This is due to the video processor chip, if the processor is powerful enough to support dual output you will have both displays mirrored.
The models which are not currently listed will be added in the near future. They are working tirelessly to create firmware for all major Canon camera models. I don't recommend trying similar models or similar firmware versions unless it is approved by Magic Lantern's software engineers.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 WITH MAGIC LANTERN AND AN EXTERN RECORDER you can get probably also 10 Bit 4.2.2 in HD in singelframes, like the mark II does. i give my r6 for a 5D mark III away :-)
Thank you so much for this! Just got my old camera set up when I was about to purchase a new one for streaming. I had a question, do you use a capture card? I am using my elgato HD60S+ or whatever it's called, and when I pull it up in OBS, it shows a very small screen. I can obviously stretch it out no problem, still looks great. But I was wondering if this is the way to go or if I am missing something. Thanks!
No problem, and Yes I am using the same elgato USB to HDMI adapter but mine is the 4K version. Although I don't shoot at 4K I still like to have the ability to do so if need be. About the video size you need to make sure the capture or live-stream settings on your OBS matches that of your camera output, and you will never have to stretch the video to force it to fit the frame.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Thank you so much. For some reason, my Elgato program says it's capturing in 1080 at 30fps but OBS can only select 720. Not sure what the problem is. Looking for some answers online.
Yes that is possible, all you have to do is: Turn OFF the Camera, remove the Compact Flash card with the ML firmware turn the camera back ON, done. Now the camera will automatically reboot to it's factory original normal Canon firmware.
Thank you so much!!! Helped me step by step to set up my canon 7D. Unfortunately I am getting some sort of delay with video but my darkness was set super dark somehow. I increased the iso to the max and maybe that’s why?
Lower the aperture number to allow more light to get it to the camera. This will also give you a great shallow depth of filed without losing quality like you would with a high ISO level.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 one of the problems I encountered is the hdmi video as seen in OBS is not as clear as I would like. I have manual focus so the clarity is not an issue. It just seems pixelated when I move. I know my camera has incredible detail with its images but not sure why the clarity is not going through to the monitor.

I'd gotten a camera for my birthday and was wondering how to use the HDMI output from the camera, after getting the USB output working. After watching the video I installed this software just because it looked cool. My question is, what would you say is the advantage of using the HDMI output vs the USB? I'm still not 100% sure but I think my EOS 600D can do 1080p 60fps over the USB link, so I'm not sure the quality would be any different using HDMI. Is it just a case of whatever output type suits the situation best? For streamers I would imagine the USB link to be easier to use so I'm not quite sure then what problem this would solve, thats why I'm not quite sure about my USB output quality as I could imagine you'd want to use HDMI for good quality while the USB can be used more to do photos (instead of video). Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
Although every camera is different, but most of the older versions have better HDMI Video Quality compared to the USB Video quality. Specially the ones that don't support USB 3.0. HDMI Signal not only carries high bit rate video, it also has better color quality, and video bit rate. However you need to have a video Capture card for the HDMI output, where as the USB output does not require any additional hardware. The type of your Video Capture card also has a big role in your video quality. I am using an elgato Camlink 4K and I am very happy with it.
When I made this video it was not supported but Magic Lantern always add new models to the supporting device list. So I recommend that you check their website for more up to date firmware.

1. Yes it should work for T5 as long as your Firmware Version is 1.0.2 builds.magiclantern.fm/1200D-102.html
2. Yes you must have the Memory Card in it if you want to Run Magic Lantern. If you remove the card the camera will load it's original default firmware just like it does now.
3. No for the Webcam Utility you don't need any modification, but you are limited in features and functionalities

Very informative, how about canon M3? Hope you can help me. Thank you
Thanks for your compliments, about your Canon EOS M3 it's very similar to the new EOS M200, so did you try this ruclips.net/video/eBLFLHXrThA/видео.html
Thanks for the tip and steps. It worked on the 60D.
I glad to hear that. Thanks for your feedback
How do you stop focus box from appearing? I've turned off global draw in ML, no matter what I set in the Canon menu, there's always either a permanent focus box (even in manual focus mode) or a 'face detect' box appears when there's a face in shot.
@@RickyRew same here D:
Great information! If you have a continuous power source for that same camera, can you stream all day? Or does it overheat?
Yes you can, my Canon 5D Mark II is on 24 hours a day I never turn it off.
For example the first link is the one I have and the 2nd link is a cheaper version of that

@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 Just to clarify... we use a CF drive not an SD, correct? Or can both types storage be used to do this?
@@TeraGreene1 I did it with CF, although it might work with SD card as well. So to be on the safe side try it on CF
Thank you kind sir, worked like a charm on my 600D
Excellent!
Is there a build for canon 2000d
It is not available yet, but they are working on some models and the 2000D is one of them.
Thank you for help people! you are very good explaining ! and very good person! Thanks from Russia!
You are very welcome my friend, and I think you for your kind words, it really means a lot to me.
Do we have RP support too
Not at this time but hopefully soon, however keep in mind that Canon EOS RP already supports clean HDMI out of the box.

Did you used a video capture card ?
@@BatistaBass I am using a USB 3.0 Video Capture Dongle, it is an elgato Cam Link 4K
Can this be done on a Canon Rebel T5?
Currently it's not, but they are constantly adding new models to the list of compatibility.
Thank you, it worked well with my 2 cameras.🙏🙏🙏
Glad it helped!
i think u can stay in manual. You jus need to go in autofocus settings and turn off focus box
Since the mirror goes up when you shoot video the auto focus will not work on DSLR cameras. So leaving the Auto Focus On will not do you any good. For that you will need to use a Mirror less camera like a Canon EOS RP
Do you know If I need to use a video capture card with this?
@@BatistaBass try using usb cable with EIS utility web app
Hay alguna manera de poder ver la pantalla de la camara + hdmi en simultaneo? Gracias
Hi, that depends on the model of your camera, on some models you can, and on others you can't. This is due to the video processor chip, if the processor is powerful enough to support dual output you will have both displays mirrored.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 T3I, T4I, T5i o T6i ??

Any suggestions on Canon T6i since it is not listed on magic lantern?
The models which are not currently listed will be added in the near future. They are working tirelessly to create firmware for all major Canon camera models. I don't recommend trying similar models or similar firmware versions unless it is approved by Magic Lantern's software engineers.
Can Panasonic Lumix Gx7 do something similar like this?
Unfortunately at this time it only supports Canon Cameras, but if Panasonic is added in the future I will be sure to let you know.
I have a 5d mark II I want to update firmware but the screen is not showing anything , how to go about it.
Remove the Memory Card and let the Camera boot, then insert the card and redo the update.
Could u please answer me how to remove recording red sign during live streaming?
I need to know the exact model number of your camera.
Thanks for you video!
Is there any way to remove black padding around video when streaming to TV ?
The only way to do that is to zoom the image which will lower the quality.

great. so ist the hdmi out of my 6D than in 8 bit 4.2.0 ore in 10.bit 4.2.2
On my 5D Mark II I believe it is only 8 bit 4.2.0 at 4:3 Aspect Ratio, but I haven't checked it on other models.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 WITH MAGIC LANTERN AND AN EXTERN RECORDER you can get probably also 10 Bit 4.2.2 in HD in singelframes, like the mark II does. i give my r6 for a 5D mark III away :-)

Not yet but they are constantly adding coverage to more models of Canon.
works well for canon 1200d but border removal of video seems not possible. I was trying to do this for HDMI video recording.
Make sure to turn off the Auto Focus switch on the lens.
Thank you! This was really helpful and useful for me two years ago 🙌🏻 but sadly now I need to get the original firmware back, is it possible?
Yes that is possible, all you have to do is: Turn OFF the Camera, remove the Compact Flash card with the ML firmware turn the camera back ON, done. Now the camera will automatically reboot to it's factory original normal Canon firmware.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 thank you!! 🙌🏻
Is there any way for cannon 1300d

Thank you so much!!! Helped me step by step to set up my canon 7D.
Unfortunately I am getting some sort of delay with video but my darkness was set super dark somehow. I increased the iso to the max and maybe that’s why?
Lower the aperture number to allow more light to get it to the camera. This will also give you a great shallow depth of filed without losing quality like you would with a high ISO level.
@@TECHNOLOGYTIPS101 thank you! I will try that!

thanks for the info. I have this problem with the 6D Mark II. It's not listed in your link. Can you help?
Try this link builds.magiclantern.fm/6D-116.html

Not at the moment, but Magic Lantern is constantly releasing new firmware, so don't lose hope my friend.
