Great video, very clear and concise explanation! I just got a Canon EOS Rebel T5i (in the Americas, aka Kiss X7i in Japan or 700D in the rest of the world) from a friend for my camera collection and realized that I can run Magic Lantern which is totally awesome! I am an instant fan of that camera and will be even more fun with ML loaded on it. I am obsessed with 2010s era cameras, especially DSLRs, and ML breathes new life into an aging, yet still very capable, camera!! Cheers from Seattle, WA
Respect for answering people's questions even long after the video's been out! Found it while being frustrated by my out of focus 1200d photographs, impossible to see what's in focus on that tiny screen.
I've been using ML for like a year or so, but you just taught me about Magic Zoom and HOLY THIS IS AMAZING IT MAKES EVERYTHING SO MUCH EASIER! Thank you so much!
Do you know how I activate the continue video shooting on my Canon T3i? I installed Magic Lantern but video still stops at 4gb. It doesn't restart as I would like it to.
Dude, great video. I've got a 6D to snag for $350 but would like to know if the audio source/mic jack with ML can be selectable from "microphone" to "line level". I want to completely bypass the camera preamp and to use line level from a high quality outboard sound source like I can my Fuji XS10 or XT4. In those audio menus you can select between microphone and line level for the mic jack. Thanks man.
Great video! But can I use external wireless microphone using the magic lanter? In normal Canom settling I had to change to manual in order to use the mic. Does magic lantern allows the same?
Hi Corey I recently installed magic lantern with the Latest Build (2018-07-02 22:19 and used a sandisk extreme pro 32gb speed up to 95mb per sec when I record the screen is moving super slow . I followed your settings video but I don't see the volume meters at the top or the same screen as the build you have . Thanks in advance for any help you can provide .
Great presentationt here. Learned a lot. Magic Lantern Features seem to vary from camera to camera. On my Canon 6D there's a menu item that allows you to simply turn off the 30 minute recording limit, which makes the 6D a good streaming/podcast camera. . But that feature does not apply to other Canon models.
Yeah, I think you can totally get good video with the T7. I'm a believer that if you know foundations of how to use a camera (camera gear, lighting, audio) you can get good to great video out of most cameras. I would look into so videos about how to use your camera, some basic lighting tips (even using natural light) and how to get good audio. That will take your videos up in quality so much! Great tutorial. Would anyone here have an idea how it may be suitable for the 5D Mark iii? Would some of the features on Magic Lantern even be needed at all? I was only interested in Magic Lantern for the 4K feature, I had no idea about all these other features. The Mark iii is a pretty complicated camera already
Glad the video was helpful! I would definitely say yes to using Magic Lantern with a 5D Mark iii. Honestly, it's on of the top cameras for using ML with. Because of it's high sd card write speeds it can record at some really high frame rates for RAW video, so whether you're shooting 1080, 2.5k, or 4k the footage looks amazing in terms of quality and dynamic range once you edit the raw video files.
@@reelfilmmaking101 Right on! Thanks for the response! Yes I'm real excited to try Magic Lantern on my Mark iii. Hi I have a Canon 6D with 1.1.6 firmware on it. I just wanted to know if i install Magic lantern on it , will it help me autofocus while recording Videos , specially with moving subjects? please do let me know....thanks
Magic Lantern can't change the focus system in the Canon 6D, but I know there are focus assist features like focusing peaking and waveforms that can help when you're shooting with manual focus. There's also a focus pulling mode where you can set in and out points for the camera to pull focus from and to. I haven't used that mode really, so I don't know a ton about it. Hope this helps!
You might need to enable to module that allows for audio recording. If you navigate over the the far menu on the magic lantern menu there should be a page with all the different modules you can turn on that activate different things within magic lantern. Enable the audio module, then turn off your camera and when you turn it back on you should have audio metering. Hope this helps!

Can one use the Magic zoom and shoot/record the scene fully magnified (in your example, can the amp knob be recorded as if we had additional lenses)? If not, the Magic lantern should implement that feature.
Yeah, that sounds like an awesome idea. My understanding is, though you can record with Magic Zoom fully magnified it still only records at the actual focal length of the lens. Bummer.
Does this work on Canon 90D or Canon T8i? Debating which camera to buy next year. 90d or T8i. I really like the 90d. For 4k video and full crop sensor.
Magic Lantern doesn't work on newer cameras like the 90D or T8i. The developers are still working on new builds for some of the cameras from the past 5-6 years.
I have used ML for about a decade. Never had any serious issues with it. Usually the SD card gets corrupted swapping it back and forth from the camera to the various readers I have.

Hi, does work AF of the Canon 60d with Magic Lantern? May I use it for filmmaking myself? (as there is not support for M50 yet). I would like to try Magic Lantern, I've seen your video with the EOS M, but I wonder if this 60D with flippy screen and AF would work better. What do you recommend me?
From my experience testing it out, the AF does not work with the 60d in magic lantern. It is nice that the 60d does have the flip out screen for video, I use that quite a lot. For either camera I would not rely on auto focus, since it's not great in either of them. I think between the two cameras, I think you'll have a better magic lantern experience using the eos m. The builds are more stable and you can getter a better overall result with the eosm vs the 60d.
Quick question..i have a Canon 60D. Will Magic Lantern let me do continuous recording depending on card size ...I need to be able to do 1 to 1.5 hours without interruption..Thanks
There’s a setting within Magic Lantern that does allow for continuous recording if you have a big enough SD card, but the camera still has to shut off momentarily at the 29min mark, so you’ll have some dropped frames if you only have one camera. If you have another camera like your 60D that you can load Magic lantern on, you could slightly stagger recording between the cameras and be able to record for that 1 to 1.5 length, without any lost frames. Hope that helps!
Reel Filmmaking - great info thanks! I just got a 7D - I understand that the camera overheats at about 10 mins of filming video & cuts off? Question is - how long will it take to cool down so I can continue filming video? Many thanks ✌️📸
I've never used ML with at T2i, but the problem could be the SD you're using. Try to a different card or one with higher write speeds on it, that could possibly fix the problem. I would also try to reinstall ML to the SD card and see if you still have the problem.
I have installed ML on my 60D but it trust recording 7s (1728x736), I am currently using Lexar 64gb v30 memory card, can you give me advice on how to shoot for longer. Thanks!
You won't get much more out of a 60D, sd cards aren't that great. Maybe look for a second hand 5D mk2, it takes cf cards you'll get much longer recording time.
I'm curious about the camera temperature. I run Magic Lantern on my 60d and typically shoot for at least an hour. I've seen 64c before...got me a little concerned. I've not had any performance issues but I was curious if your temps are similar.
That's a hot camera if that reading is correct! I've only really focused on the temp in Magic Lantern when I've been filming outside at someplace like the beach where my camera feels like it's cooking. I've seen 38c on my camera before and all my videos and pictures were still fine after I got back from shooting.
Really interesting video thanks, I have a question though ... So i managed to get Magic Lantern on my T3i (after learning how to downgrade the firmware back to 1.0.2) No issues with installation, everything looks like its there but ... the most useful features for me would be a) to get clean hdmi and b) the magic zoom (v useful for me when zooming in to my workbench and knowing im in focus) But there seems tobe an issue. I've watched your vid so closely many times over but I can't seem to get the magic zoom to work at all. I can set all the options as you have but when I click record and then try (any button) it just does nothing. I can;t work out whether im being an idiot or whether the magic lantern software has an issue ... yet I can find noone else haviung this problem and no forums reporting it. So for example ... I'm in video mode, i press waste basket to get into magic lantern menu (confirm settings exactly as yours were, though ive tried every combination of triggers) then i then press the record button once (screen then displays normal view but with obvious magic lantern info listed) but does not start recording. At this point if I press the shutter half or all way all of the magic lantern info dissapears and it appear to revert to normal firmware mode. If I press record again to start recording the recording starts but no button on the camera then activates the zoom mode, neither can i get the focus ring to activate it. Any ideas? It's like the buttons arent configured or just all do pretty much the same thing (which is to give the impression that magic lantern just stopped and camera reverted to standard). N.B. I backdated the firmware to 1.0.2 because that was what magic lantern required. This firmware was not available on the cannon website so i had to search for it online. I dont think this is the issue though since the camera had no objection to the firmware downgrade, the update software worked as normal as does the camera since doing so.
would magic lantern help with auto focus on a T3i for video shooting? I have a T3i which i havent used in a long time and im thinking to start making youtube videos but i heard the auto focus on it is very bad and most people use manual focus when shooting video with T3i which obviously is quite troublesome especially if there are movements during shots.
Magic Lantern can't fix the autofocusing problem on the T3i, though it can give you some different focus assist features, like focus peaking that will greatly help you in getting good focus. Though it's a bit more challenging with an older camera like the T3i, you can totally do RUclips style content with that camera. I made a video about focus tips for the Canon 60D that gives some advice about getting good focus that I'm sure would help you, since the Canon 60D has terrible autofocus like the T3i. Hope this helps! ruclips.net/video/cLkebf886n4/видео.html&t
Yes, the canon software still works. While you're using magic lantern the camera is booting the OS from the sd card. Once you delete magic lantern off the card or switch to a different sd card, you'll have the same canon OS again.
@@winstonseb7706 NO! Just take off the battery and reinsert. to recover. If you use a Extreme Pro SD Card (32GB) ML will work correctly all the time. You can disable ML loading just by holding the delete button when you turn on your camera. ML adds to your Canon software so Canon software still works normally when ML is loaded.
Heck yeah it is! The first time I shot some raw video, I was blown away by the detail of it compared to the regular h.264 that comes out of canon cameras.
Yep! All you need to run magic lantern is the software on the sd card that you can use on your dslr camera. The software loads from your sd card, so the software on your camera isn't damaged or affected.
I had an old version of firmware on my 60D (1.0.something) and tried to update to 1.1.1 so I could do the magic lantern update. But the only version canon have now is 1.1.2 and magic lantern won't work on anything but 1.1.1. Has anyone found a way around this ? or found a version of 1.1.1 ? plz help :)
Thnx for video! Very good. I have an old T3i that I am experimenting with and have installed ML. A few questions for anyone: 1. Focus peak does not show up on my live view. It’s on and in position exactly the same as explained on the video but just not appearing on my screen. Any suggestions? 2. Is it common to use Focus Peak and Magic Zoom in tandem? 3. There is nowhere in ML to adjust to RAW. I have made the RAW selection in the Canon settings and that seems to work but have seen the RAW setting available (on other videos) in ML. 4. When I set the ISO, I do so on the ISO button (so Canon setting) and it shows as doubled on the ML menu (on the live view). LIke id. adjust to 600 the ML reads ISO800D+… Thoughts? And final question having nothing to do with ML is around using the 50mm lens. I really like the lens, especially the boca. However there is slighty too much movement in the hand- held (using a monopod). Any suggestions on stabilizing? I’ve run a couple tests in post on Premier and the result is just OK- so wondeing if anyone is using any stabilizations systems that don’t cost a zillion.. Thank you! Michael
1, Focus peak is available only for MF (manual focus). BUT USM and STM lenses can do MF even if switch is on AF. 2. Yes 3. Under the [modules] menu. You need to turn on load the module for RAW video module and restart the camera. 4 the ISO800D+ is because you have turned ON "highlight tone priority in Canon's Custom Functions(C.Fn). Turn it off.
@@margaretannrouse7438 Your 50mm lens is very shaky because you're using an aps-c camera, you're getting an equivalent of almost 80mm on full frame The more zoomed in you are, the more shaky your footage will be!
I used magic lantern on canon 600D for almost over a year and everything worked fine, but the other day, I turned on the camera and everything worked fine but magic lantern was nowhere to be found, as if it was deleted and I know that I didn’t delete it.. Do you think it's safe for my camera to try installing it again? PS. sorry for my bad English 😂
That's so weird to hear about Magic Lantern just being gone. Could it have gotten deleted by accident when you were clearing the card. If the camera still seems to be working, I would download the software again and try running on your camera again. I think it should safe, so don't worry about that. Also, no worries about your English, I'm understanding you perfectly. :)
You can install magic lantern. It's a very similar process to how you install it on your camera. Go to the update firmware page within your camera menu, boot the os, and once you're on the magic lantern home page wait the 60sec it tells you until the magic lantern software will be uninstalled, then format your sd card. Hope this helps!

Reel Filmmaking - great info thanks! I just got a 7D - I understand that the camera overheats at about 10 mins of filming video & cuts off? Question is - how long will it take to cool down so I can continue filming video? Many thanks ✌️📸
How do I activate this continuous mode on my T3i? I installed the Magic Lantern Firmware but it still cuts off at 4gb
I installed magic lantern on my Canon rebel T2i & it keeps stopping when I'm recording...any help I'll be thankful
I've never used ML with at T2i, but the problem could be the SD you're using. Try to a different card or one with higher write speeds on it, that could possibly fix the problem. I would also try to reinstall ML to the SD card and see if you still have the problem.
@@reelfilmmaking101 Thank you was a great help...Respect
You can turn down your video bitrate. I turned mine down to 0.7x
Stop using that brand sd card. Just get a SanDisk
wow great video
Thanks!
I really would like AF in video mode added to ML! Great video. Thanx!
Totally agree!
I'm curious about the camera temperature. I run Magic Lantern on my 60d and typically shoot for at least an hour. I've seen 64c before...got me a little concerned. I've not had any performance issues but I was curious if your temps are similar.
id like to know aswell
Here on EOS M, I usually shot 12bit uncompressed or 14bit loseles and have hit 42° with no problem for 2 hours.
Alessandro, but the deal with my 60d...I actually made money trading for it and I’m getting great results. Just don’t know for how long 😅
Wow!
Not sure if it helps but dont push record from within the menu
Sir any news on magic lantern for Canon 750d
On the Magic Lantern website it says they're currently working on a build for the Canon 750d. Hopefully they'll finish it soon!
would magic lantern help with auto focus on a T3i for video shooting?

Reel Filmmaking thank you for the advice and link. Will definitely try to install magic lantern. Any little bit helps I guess.
Is the canon software still work when you install the ml software?
Yes.
Yes, the canon software still works. While you're using magic lantern the camera is booting the OS from the sd card. Once you delete magic lantern off the card or switch to a different sd card, you'll have the same canon OS again.
@@reelfilmmaking101 will it damage your camera if you failed downloading the magic lantern???
@@winstonseb7706 NO! Just take off the battery and reinsert. to recover.
If you use a Extreme Pro SD Card (32GB) ML will work correctly all the time. You can disable ML loading just by holding the delete button when you turn on your camera.
ML adds to your Canon software so Canon software still works normally when ML is loaded.
Excelente video muchas gracias por compartir, te deseo muchos éxitos!
gracias!
Just downloaded ML on my T3i, and it is amazing as compared to the base Canon os.
Heck yeah it is! The first time I shot some raw video, I was blown away by the detail of it compared to the regular h.264 that comes out of canon cameras.
Does ML allows you to disable the Metering Timer?
From what I can tell, I don't think you can disable the metering timer with ML.
Is it compitable with 6d mark 2
To my knowledge, I don't think they've developed magic lantern for the Canon 6D markii
@@reelfilmmaking101 is 6d version can work on 6d mark 2
It's possible that the 6d version could work on the mark ii, but I'm not sure.
@@bahaaonsi7788 Ask on th magic lantern forum, don't just try it.
It could break your camera
Around 9:54 you kinda sound like MKBHD
Thanks!!
only the memory card has a magic lantern will be work in dslr?
Has anyone found a way around this ? or found a version of 1.1.1 ? plz help :)
Just Search! You will get the zip file of 1.1.1 on Google or check out once on Canon's Japan website
Im lucky. I haven't used my 600D properly since I bought it in 2013 lol...
Thnx for video! Very good. I have an old T3i that I am experimenting with and have installed ML.
A few questions for anyone:
2. Yes
3. Under the [modules] menu. You need to turn on load the module for RAW video module and restart the camera.
4 the ISO800D+ is because you have turned ON "highlight tone priority in Canon's Custom Functions(C.Fn). Turn it off.
@@set3777 Thank you !!
@@margaretannrouse7438 Your 50mm lens is very shaky because you're using an aps-c camera, you're getting an equivalent of almost 80mm on full frame
The more zoomed in you are, the more shaky your footage will be!
I used
magic lantern on canon 600D for almost over a year and everything worked fine, but the other day, I turned on the camera and everything worked fine but magic lantern was nowhere to be found, as if it was deleted and I know that I didn’t delete it..
Reel Filmmaking thanks man, I installed it again and it works perfectly fine!!
Awesome! Glad to hear that!
You probably formatted your sd card
MKBHD Is That You?
bro fr said, camera boutta die time to end the video
Can you uninstal the magic lantern os?
You can install magic lantern. It's a very similar process to how you install it on your camera. Go to the update firmware page within your camera menu, boot the os, and once you're on the magic lantern home page wait the 60sec it tells you until the magic lantern software will be uninstalled, then format your sd card. Hope this helps!
