There are SO many programmers working on ML that the crowdsourcing of programming pretty much negates monetary donation... It is the only place where socialism actually works and doesn't create slavery... LOL
I have an EOS M that I didn't use too much but I now use it often with old lenses and adapters because with ML the focus peaking makes manual focusing easy.
Apparently late to the party, but I still want to thank you. I've always thought there could be a custom firmware that would fix an issue I was having (live stream and using a DSLR but always having an issue of this white box showing and couldn't disable in settings.) It took a while but finally seeing you explain that magic lantern could disable it was basically all i needed! great video!
The number one Magic Lantern feature for me is focus peaking. This opens up the world of manual lenses like Samyang, which are optically amazing and easier on the pocket. Not to mention the exciting world of vintage lenses. Magic Lantern alone has made me pause on my decision to switch to Sony altogether.
Movie Restart for me is the best feature for ML - with older canon DSLRs there is a limit well below 30minutes - around 12min as soon as the video file is 4GB the recording will stop which is a huge pain but now the Movie ON feature will avoid missing a wedding ceremony or interview or speech except for a few seconds every 12 minutes
It is a good feature. I wish there was a way of turning off the live view while it's recording to save battery power. I can't find a way to do that so I just set the LCD backlight to min.
@@ArcanePath360 I record my guitar playing to find my mistakes. Once the camera is set up on the tripod and filming, I simply close the LCD which turns that display off.
I use magic lantern on my old 550d (t2i) and its awesome, it consume more battery but you can get one extra battery and enjoy all the cool features. My favorite features are : 1. Intervalometer 2. Bracketing For HDR 3. Trap focus (it makes easier to do macro or any other hand held manual focusing shot) 4. Focus Peaking (which most canon cameras dont have) 5. Auto ETTR( To get the best image quality and tonal range from your camera) 6. Option to use camera proximity sensor as trigger 7. Raw RGB histogram with dynamic range display 8. Dual ISO can do wonders
I put it on my camera for like a day. I felt overwhelmed with it all and deleted it. I know I'd love some more videos about exactly how to set up. What SD cards work well and just more details. If you did that that would be awesome.
I think you didn't understood correctly what focus features are for. These are options useful when you want to take a bunch of photos to stack focus (mostly in macro). You can set how far your focus should be shifted and with what step. Camera will then automatically shoot those pictures each with focus a little bit further. I was using it in 60D now I have 6D and I am a little scared to install ML on that.
Great tuto! I just bought a T5i for funny price and I found out that this camera is a very very good friend I am suprised how much back light situation it can take (which I love to work with especially if the air is even steamy to help that) ...so amazing how much the T5i can take of any crative back lighting , I just made footages look like Bladerunner seriously using a simle EF S 18-55 lens. I love it!!!! Definitely gonna install M.L. on it thanks because in raw this camera is a very serious beast on the field for the current price that is 400 euros but worth 2000 with some clever tweaking.
As always very high quality material. Thanks Toby. I was hoping you'd cover the focus stacking feature of ML. I'm just getting my feet wet into macro photography on a shoe string budget. Have you covered that in another video? Thanks.
Thanks for the video. I have been a little afraid to install the Magic Lantern software because of the disclaimers. You just removed that fear...... off we go to explore my NEW camera.
The thing about intervalometers that you buy is that they can use burst shooting by holding it down under the "long" settings for however many seconds. So for example: After a 47 minute delay, hold down the button for 8 seconds for a burst, then repeat every 2 minutes until however many pics are taken or until the card is full.
Cheers for that Toby, I've never been brave enough until now but I've just installed this onto my 650D with no problems! Thanks again for the walkthrough, maybe do an advanced one next ! Love the shows, good stuff!
Magic Lantern is a great piece of software! My favourite features are focus peaking and the ability to manually set the Kelvin temperature for the white balance. The one feature I would most like to see is exposure compensation in Manual+Auto ISO mode.
Nathaniel Ng Yes - the Kelvin WB is a nice feature that higher end cameras already have and ML brings it to the masses :) I agree with that second feature request - very helpful.
Thanks for putting this together. I'm going to use my 5DmkII in the Columbia River Gorge later this week and needed a quick refresher on ML. I do like the forced fps feature for some of my time lapse videos.
Thanks Toby. All sound pretty straight forward. My camera is still under warrant, if it needs to go in for repair at a later date for a unrelated issue (after using ML) will Canon know that ML has been used on the camera at some stage?

erindrys true - Kelvin balance is nice. I would love to know how Canon feels that free open source software adds features that they charge $1000 of bucks for ;)
Tried Magic lantern for still shooting on my 650D because I really wanted the magic zoom window but I was disappointed with it's performance. Maybe my camera just isn't good enough to handle it but it was slow, the magic zoom window flickered while evaluating settings for a photo and the replacement for the exposure level indicator was horribly slow at responding to changes in light. It would have been better if you could just use the default exposure level indicator as it works perfectly fine. I couldn't force it to under/over expose using the Av+/- feature in the Magic lantern live view either which is quite important for certain situations. Live view's brightness wouldn't match the actual brightness with my manual focus lens attached either making it quite useless for me overall. A better solution would be to get Canon to add an option for a zoom window into the default live view interface. It's a neat idea and makes precise focusing much easier.

Pedro Madeira Ah ok cool I didn't know that, good to know that it will be "un-flashable". Maybe we will get lucky and somebody else will step up to help with the port but for now I guess we will just have to wait ;p
My question to you does Film Directors used those type of cameras for film? If so do I need one because my long term goal is to do directing & producing🎬
Great brief Toby, would really appreciate a detailed walk through for my T4i.. (I guess you're a busy man) haven't had the courage to up the firmware yet. Wasn't sure if ML had included this model. It seems fairly safe and there are loads of features that would be very handy to improve the skills of many a proud canon enthusiast.
I've been using ML on my 650D (it's an Alpha build), it was working great until I tried one of the Nightly builds and it was buggy. I updated to another nightly and it seems fine so far. I'm loving ML, and yes I can shoot RAW video and even Dual ISO for increased dynamic range. Other features I like include Power Saving options and increasing the MP4/H264 video Bitrate and quality beyond Canon's best setting.
CameraRec Toby I have tried shooting RAW just to test it out and to find out what maximum resolution I can achieve (depends on speed of card), but I haven't tried processing the video. As for Dual ISO I haven't tried it, but I did read the entire PDF document by the guy who programmed the feature (I think). Also I read there is a bug in the 650D with Dual ISO, I can't remember what it was but don't think it makes the feature unusable. I'm still relatively new on ML.
CameraRec Toby I've tried Dual ISO just for test. To post process these files you need to find a program which you need to use with files from camera. I will try to find information about it tomorrow. It's almost 1 am here and I'm already in bed.
The program you need is in this post: www.magiclantern.fm/forum/index.php?topic=7139.0 it's called cr2hdr.exe (windows) and here is direct link to it acoutts.com/a1ex/cr2hdr.zip After unpacking it, you put your files from camera in the same folder, run command prompt and execute it "cr2hdr.exe filenames" after that you should get a DNG which can be normally edited in Lightroom for example. Hope that helps.
This was a good video! I learned a lot thank you 😀 Do you have a more in depth video on the magic lantern features, I'm really curious about how using it will improve the tones on the video because I'm trying to choose what camera to buy that has really good video quality and picture quality and I watched a RUclips video comparing the video quality of the Mark III vs Sony a7s and the tone quality was similar only after using the magic lantern but before using that the video quality on the mark iii seemed much worse than the A7S so I'm trying to learn more about this now before I choose what to buy, I'm also trying to decide between the 5dsr, I'm trying to learn through RUclips about which video quality and focusing for my busy and running kiddos is best. Do you know of a video on RUclips comparing these? Do you have a video comparing these? I like your videos thank you so much I'll be subscribing to your channel now and telling my friends about you 😀 Have a blessed day I really hope to hear back from you or anyone that could lead me to the right videos, I learn the best through videos
Cool video, I can not find your first two options on my Canon 5D Mark ii. I am running the latest ML Frimware. I do not see the overlay options (Grid Display or Crop Marks) or the Magic Zoom. Thank you in advance!
Thank you so much for its walk through. I have a question though. Can this software increase the Automatic recording time of 29.56 minutes to higher recording times? Pls Guide!!
hi man, good video! A question here, i want to buy a canon DSLR to improve my RUclips videos. Im between the T5i and the T6i, and im willing to pay the difference. The only thing that makes me hesitate is Magic Lantern, could you say that the lack of support for ML on the T6i is a deal breaker?
No. At the level of features provided for the T5i I wouldn't consider it a deal breaker The T6i has improved sensor. But also consider the G85 ruclips.net/video/grBCmCSR-fo/видео.html
Thanks for the answer man! the g85 here in Argentina is out my price range. Im a techy guy, so rephrasing my question, would you say thats better to have a T6i instead of a T5i with magic lantern?? im very amazed with the zebra and the focus aids thats ML has. Also a friend offer me a 7d second (almost new), what do u think about that?? Thanks!!!
Thank you for the video! I just installed ML on my t5i and your videos were the first ones I checked out to learn how to use it. I do have a question though, ML is saying that my camera is 49*C after about 20 minutes of shooting. What temperatures should start having me concerned? Thanks!
Think you should have chosen a different title as M/L is not just about video there are a lot of exras in there for still photography. You also forgot to mention that if you have to send a camera back to Canon there is now an option during a re-install of M/L to reset camera to factory. Russ
Great Vid not sure if you can answer this but which out of the canon lineup is good with magic lantern when video raw? Just notice that Magic Lantern doesn't show download for 7D??
Hi, nice vids i love them all :D . Im considering buying a canon t5 (the canon t5i its out of my range this days) my question is with magic lantern and the canon t5 can i reach a professional level of cinematic videos? thanks.
Really great tutorial. I am not seeing any of the information at the top of the bottom such as the volume at the top and I don't see the Magic Zoom. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Magic Lantern?
The Home Page of the Magic Lantern website does not list the 80D or even the 70D but says the 70D is in progress. The 70D has been around for about 3 years. There are questions about the 80D and there is plenty of comment about 70D in the Forum listed at the top of the Home page and you don't have to be signed up to read anything. There seems to be lots of problems with 70D and the chat seems to me to be very technical covering 102 pages! If you can make head nor tail of any of that lot you are a better man than me Gunga Din!
+007Stalled 7 I have had ml on my 70D for almost a year now, it has worked great for me so far! However my camera recently started to not respond from time to time (Restart fixes the problem). Still quite annoying. ML does not necessarily have to be the source of the problem though. It might be the SD-Card as well...
Thank you for the video, I have the T2i and using it with the microscope adapter but it is useless in movie mode for darkfield microscopy due to the FPS being capped at 30. Your video has inspired me to try the magic lantern to get the fps down to a manageable level, darkfeild microscopy is truly amazing and insightful I hope it works :]
Great video, but I have one really STUPID question. Dose the firmware live on the SD card, meaning that I have to sacrifice my sole SD slot, leaving me with only an CF slot for images? Upon furthers research, seems that ML does not work with the 7DMKII, IDMK1V (or any 1D for that matter), I guess at this point the question is moot.
HI Toby. Hey I dont suppose ML adds in focus points. I have the 6D with only the 11 focus points and 1 cross type. I love the camera but the lack of FP is starting to bother me.
also, for photography and magic zoom focusing, will it only appear on lcd display or does it appear inside the small viewfinder that is normally used for photography? thanks
Okay, so here's the deal - brand new T5i, about 1 1/2 weeks old. Installed magic lantern at about 1 week old. Now, the remote does not work - wired or wireless. Nothing happened except installing ML. Tried everything - reset all, reinstall Canon firmware - nothing worked. Talked to Canon. Here's the problem(s): she said they don't cover cameras purchased on eBay (it's not an authorized seller (even though eBay is NOT the seller)), the seller was in Canada and they don't cover cameras purchased outside the US, and I don't have an eBay account so I had my brother buy it with his account, so the registration is in my name but the receipt is in my brother's name. I shipped it anyway, as the girl told me to do. I just checked the status online and it says something like "the camera is currently being examined" and it is (at this time) considered to be under warranty. They've had it about a week and a half. Their website says that when I receive it back it will say what was wrong with it. I'm anxious to see what the problem was (if it was ML). ML is incredibly awesome software - ESPECIALLY at that price! FREE!!! It does a lot of great stuff. But I am wary about installing it again. I haven't heard of anyone else with this same problem, but I will continue to research that before a reinstall. The fact that I bought a T5i instead of my dream 5D MkIII could be an indication that I don't have a lot of money to throw away for something I could really live without if I had to. When I find out what the problem was, I'll check back in here.
@@DESHIY Canon said they couldn't find anything wrong. When they sent it back, it worked fine. I tried Magic Lantern a couple times. When it was installed and I tried shooting a video, the camera would just stop working completely. ML has some great features, but I just had too many problems with it. Since then, I won a nice mirrorless camera in RUclips channel's contest, so I mainly use that now.
When doing timelapse, does ML give you a little preview movie using the TL frames that you can view in-camera before you download the files? Thanks for this vid, too.
ML for the 6d uses version 1.1.3 firmware. Unfortunately, I cannot find a safe download site for that version of firmware. I have version 1.1.6 on my 6d now, which I updated just a few days ago.
The guy working on the ML port for the 70D is taking a break atm. He said he will start development again sometime in December so unfortunately Magic Lantern will probably only be available mid 2015 on the 70D.
Is there an Alpha build for the 700d? Because I followed your tutorial on how to install ML and I downloaded the Nightly build. Its working perfectly though so no worries. Just want to know how much of a risk I took lol
Hi Tobby! Thank you for the very useful video. After much research, I've decided to go ahead and get Magic Lantern for my Canon T5i. However, unlike you, I was not able to find a stable version of the software on the ML site (only the nightly builds are available). I wasn't able to find a stable ML version for the t59 anywhere online. Anyway you can help me (and other t5i owners) with this?
I have the same issue :/ Was not able to find the stable version for the T5i. I also had an issue with the audio live preview. I can't just get it :/ the ML menu does not show anything regarding audio other than MLV audio. Also I can't shoot RAW video for more than like 5seg.

The thing about intervalometers that you buy is that they can use burst shooting by holding it down under the "long" settings for however many seconds.
Łukasz Grabski Excellent. Thanks for the followup. I will take a look.
Thanks for this overview. You did a great job explaining things. I will definitely try it out. Cheers, from St.Louis.
Thanks! Good luck!! It certainly adds some cool features.
Toby could you please make a video on how to install the latest stable ML build on the 70D?
Russ
Can you show us a tutorial on how to make our own custom firmware to record on higher resolutions or higher bit rate pls?
Thank you!
great video! do you know what happens if you format you sd card with ML ?
You have the option when formatting in camera to keep MP on or clear it.
There's Updated firmware from Canon for the 5D iii which enables raw video out from HDMI (or clean HDMI out, whatever that means?).
Great Vid not sure if you can answer this but which out of the canon lineup is good with magic lantern when video raw? Just notice that Magic Lantern doesn't show download for 7D??
thetruth The 5D Mark III is best but I have heard some have luck with T5i and 60D too.
Spotted
CameraRec Toby luck??? I wish I had time for luck brother
Great tips. Thanks for all your help.
Extremely well made video. Thank you!
Worth to watch! Thanks!
Robert Rosen Press the INFO button to cycle through the screens - it should appear.
I had the Global Draw turned off. So cycling though the info screens didn't do it. Thank you.
Awesome video Toby!
Hello.
is it possible to go back to the stock firmware after that? thank you
Should I use this firmware if I have a canon 80D?
Very informative video, Toby. Thank you for another great video :)
Great overview. helps a lot. Thank you :)
hi the best question is.. what is the maximum video resolution with magic lantern ?
Canon should employ whoever made this
HI Toby. Hey I dont suppose ML adds in focus points. I have the 6D with only the 11 focus points and 1 cross type. I love the camera but the lack of FP is starting to bother me.
where is that battery percentage option? i only got the graphical one, it isn't showing specific percentage.
On wikipedia "Battery remaining
60D and 5D Mark II only: displays battery percentage, estimated time remaining and battery discharging rate."
Hi, can you kindly give me the latest link to download the app for Canon 70D?
Thanks for a great tutiorial , but i have a question, will the motion detection option in the intervalometer option work in video mode ?
Man! great Info. I downloaded & Loaded ML for my 70 D, trying to get the Just of things. I thank you so much for the info!!!
also, for photography and magic zoom focusing, will it only appear on lcd display or does it appear inside the small viewfinder that is normally used for photography? thanks
Another great post dude... thanks for posting.
I know this is 7 years later, lol but how did it go?
@@DESHIY Canon said they couldn't find anything wrong. When they sent it back, it worked fine. I tried Magic Lantern a couple times. When it was installed and I tried shooting a video, the camera would just stop working completely. ML has some great features, but I just had too many problems with it. Since then, I won a nice mirrorless camera in RUclips channel's contest, so I mainly use that now.
Does it matter what kind of canon dslr you have to have all of those features?
When doing timelapse, does ML give you a little preview movie using the TL frames that you can view in-camera before you download the files? Thanks for this vid, too.
ML for the 6d uses version 1.1.3 firmware. Unfortunately, I cannot find a safe download site for that version of firmware. I have version 1.1.6 on my 6d now, which I updated just a few days ago.
1.1.6 is out on ml site. :)
CameraRec Toby Have you heard anything when Magic Lantern might be available for the 70D?
The guy working on the ML port for the 70D is taking a break atm. He said he will start development again sometime in December so unfortunately Magic Lantern will probably only be available mid 2015 on the 70D.
Pieter Nel thanks for the info
Pieter Nel Thank you for the update!
Hi thank you for your helpful video. Is it possible to have live audio monitoring In a canon t3i or t5i with magic lantern?
How can I disable the additional ads in Live View. When a video from the cam via HDMI cable is transmitted and displayed.
I have the same issue :/
Was not able to find the stable version for the T5i.
I also had an issue with the audio live preview. I can't just get it :/ the ML menu does not show anything regarding audio other than MLV audio.
Also I can't shoot RAW video for more than like 5seg.
great video! how do show battery% in live view?
On wikipedia: "Battery remaining:
60D and 5D Mark II only: displays battery percentage, estimated time remaining and battery discharging rate."
I just wanna use my canon 6D as a good webcam with clean HDMI out in the same time being able to use the camera normally. Can ML handle that?
Do you notice any cons from using the ML? Like does it do any harm to your DSLR?
Thank you for the very useful video.
youre awesome. I enjoy watching your videos.
Do you know if there’s any feature to override the maximum speed for flash highspeed sync? I have a canon 600d that won’t follow the sync from the flash trigger. My 5d mkii does!
hey you said you can lower fps of the video but can you increase it to get smooth slow motions
12:40 My 5D Mark III does that by default.
