Hey! Something very important to point out is that a highly enhanced build of Magic Lantern called "Crop Mood" has been ported to the M2 recently. You have loads of presets for aspect ratios, resolutions and crop factors there with a much more intuitive arrangement of settings and stability.
I own a Canon M2 camera. My description was always "great for photography, totally trash for videography." But after I've stumbled upon this video, my opinion about the videography capability changed a bit. Thanks for reviewing this camera!
@muhammadkevinardhiwilaga1741 .. Late to the game, as magic lantern has been around as long as the M itself. It Can even be used on a Canon 50d to unlock the hidden video capture feature.
Any DLSR or mirrorless camera are no good for video due to their outdated body structures. For daily video, just get a DJI Pocket 3. You would love it!
guys please make a video for how to install crop mood and please add the test shots if possible. i have m2. @tomcalton @Amit_Kattal. Please upload a video for it... its must needed.
My thoughts exactly. I just sold all my Canon M mount gear and moved MFT. Even worse, many 3rd party manufacturers stopped the M series also. Now you are limited to vintage and used. Seems to me, Canon was just trying to create a way to sell new and more expensive glass? Absolutely horrible was the creation of the "crippled" R100 which in almost every way underperforms previous models going back to the M50. One man's opinion.
The M mount isn't truly dead, as there are loads of third party lenses and the huge range of EF and EFs lenses work perfectly on any M body, and the M5 and M50 are perfect for adapting lenses from nearly any brand including the Voightlander 35mm f2.5 that I use on my Leica M6 Titanium body .... What's the problem ? It just means that I can pick up everyones M mount cast offs cheaply and sell on .. Winner winner chicken dinner.
@ryanleethomas They didn't need to ditch the M mount because, just like the Leica T and it's then new T mount, there is now a huge amount of third-party lenses from Sigma, Panasonic, 7 Artisans, TT Artisans, Viltrox etc etc. Now, the (ahead of it's time) Leica T can be had for £350 - £450 on Ebay and a 25mm f2 lens for £50 .. Crazy to say a system is dead just because a RUclipsr says so.
I had the M2 for a while and loved it, however it really needs to be noted that it was only released in Asia for its retail commercial run. In practice, what this means is that most photo editing software developers took that as a cue to mostly not include RAW support for it in their programs (?!), with Lightroom being the notable exception. Since I personally use Capture One, that means I'm out of luck.
I'm not sure I will ever forgive Canon for ending the M line. As a Canon user for 50 years, I thought the system was brilliant, and did buy into it. If it had been around long enough to have a model with IBIS, I would still be using it.
Me too. EOS M6 II has the best interface and the low light AF performance is better than my Sony A7RIV. I still have the originally EOS M, 18-55, 22, and 32, even though I might not use it again. Anyway, I am a sony user now, replacing my EOS M6 II with A7CII.
If they would've made more serious cameras in the M line (M6 II was really the first, and the last M ever), I'm sure it would've stuck around. But Canon was nearly as bad as Nikon in terms of taking mirrorless as a whole seriously. That's how they both fell so far behind Sony, one of the few who took mirrorless seriously from the get go.
Great video and fantastic shots from the car shoot. The littlest M series cameras definitely deserve some love. Canon never properly got behind the mount and most of the lenses were uninspiring consumer grade zooms. But the 22mm is a gem, the 32mm f1.4 is incredibly good and the 28mm macro is can take amazing images. Thanks for sharing this Tom!
That 18mpx APS-C sensor is a nice bit of Canon' history by now, as it debuted on Sep 1, 2009 in EOS 7D and was used with Canon EOS 4000D which was announced on Feb 26, 2018. I had one in my 600D, was OK for its time, but it had characteristic prominent magenta cast.
I too had a 600D - with Tamron 18-270. Loved it. Went all over the world with it. Could have fixed that cast with software - auto lens correction. (I didn't notice it! Had a UV filter on the Tamron - maybe why?) Canon R series now does lens correction in camera for jpegs. Love it. So now I have RP + 24-240 and R50 with 100-400.
got an original m for like 170 last year, and its so fun to rig out! + all the footage looks great, often run it with a rehoused vintage lens and it looks 👌
You’re not wrong. I’ve been using an M with a 22mm lens for 11 years now. A lot of other gear has come and gone. And now I’ve started using fully manual lenses. Solid set up, simple to use, and very sharp. So sad Canon decided 85 million flavours of R was the way to go.
I have owned both of these cameras and a bit over simplified for my liking. But still interesting considering the price and form factor. I also tried Magic Lantern on the Canon M with disappointing results. About half the features work some of the time? When/if working properly, you may get 10-15 seconds of video before the camera freezes and needs a reboot. I thought the ML web page was mostly abandoned several years ago and the most recent updates were back in 2018. Support and updates may be limited to a few RUclips channels ? That was my experience 2 years ago, your mileage may vary?
I have both Canon EOS M1 and M2. As long as you use a professional directivity white balance filter to calibrate the camera on-site color systerm to zero, you can use them to shoot photo with the image quality than no one can surpass with any camera or any lens.
But the sensor had serious banding issues in the shadows. Very poor DR, even for when it arrived on the scene in 2012. Literally everyone, even back then, surpassed it in image quality. Minus other Canon cameras using the same sensor.
Now THIS is quite interesting. Looks like a lot of fun. Hey, has the move to Calgary made getting new gear shipped in? Or harder? Or the same. And what's something you've been surprised about with the move?
Glad you enjoyed it! The move hasn't made buying cameras harder, but shipping is definitely A LOT slower. Some cameras have taken almost a month just to arrive from the US, which is wild to me. The only thing that's surprised me about being here is just how much I love it. The thought of going back to the UK at the moment genuinely puts a pit in my stomach. But, getting permanent residency at my age is going to be tough. Especially if the laws tighten over the next 2 years, which they are almost certainly going to. I'll be absolutely heartbroken if I have to leave and can't come back...

Recently acquired an Eos M w/ a speed booster for around $135. Of all the mirrorless options I currently have, it's probably my favorite so far. The speed booster works beautifully with all of the Canon lenses I have, and due to having adapter rings for my 5D classic, I can run my massive stash of Nikon and M42 lenses on this thing. Add in some tiny lenses that work perfectly with a 3D-printed adapter and there isn't much I CAN'T do with this little guy. Seeing as I don't do TOO much videography, I'm not sure about throwing Magic Lantern on it any time soon...but it's suuuper nice to have that option. Originally, it was the reason I even wanted to get one. Just so happens, I like it for stills more than a lot of my other stuff.
Yep. A shop tried to flog me an M series to replace my 600D. I skipped that. It was obvious then that the M series wasn't going to last. Neither was there anything like my Tamron 18-270 for this mount. It was a stop gap between moving to R series for APS-C whilst they developed R series FF first. This is timely, I am looking for a smaller EDC camera and I'm thinking either this or the Sony a5100. I am already in the Sony system but not picky when it comes to a EDC camera. Might have to look into this. I actually think it's a pretty good looking piece of kit.
I love my original Eos M. Not the fastest one, but IQ is very good IMO. Combined with the 22mm pancake lens it's so compact! With the sigma lenses it's awesome!
There's a lot of things not mentioned here related to the "raw" video option. For example is that is only payable using special software in a computer and you need to process it to make it usable.
I have an M, M3 and the great M5 plus 6 Canon M lenses. They all still work well. The M5 with the 32mm F1.4 is a miniature masterpiece for photography. The great Canon UI, a good viewfinder system, and excellent built quality make it a great entry option. The 32 mm lens is better than the much hyped Ricoh G series. It even gives my new X100VI a run for its money. It’s the latter’s ND, IBIS, internal filters, 6K and film sims that makes it an experienced photographer’s camera. I’ve looked at Sony, as the AF on their best models is good, but I still prefer the Canon UI and I can use all my decades old EF lenses on my M series if needed. I even stuck the excellent 75 to 300mm EF lens with the super fast focus on an M5 for a laugh - bit front heavy but it worked superbly well and focus was instant.
i was interested in the M cameras on the used market after canon cancelled it, but i looked at so many sample photos and they just weren't markedly better than my SL1/100D i still have, so decided not super compelling use of dollars. you got some nice car photos here though!
I had the original M and it was very well built and created very nice images, but there was significant lag in the shutter release - I imagine the M2 was better in that respect?
Wouldn't this (or any other of the small M cameras) be great with the new Viltrox 28mm pancake lens as an everyday carry camera. A shame that Viltrox will never release that lens in the discontinued M mount.
Will you review something similar to this in all terms but also in production, it is quite frustrating to find out these small but great cameras are not available anymore.
You can find plenty of them on the used market. But yeah, I will (and do) review new stuff too, but new smaller cameras don't come out all that frequently. Plus, not many manufacturers actually let me borrow their stuff for review and I can't afford to buy tons of new stuff 🤷🏻♂️
I loved my M3 (stolen), the M5 and M6ii. Finally gave up Canon for G9 and OM-1. I owned every M lens they made and even a few they didn't. The glass, weather sealing and toughness in the M series was just not there.Very unfortunate. I owned a lot of Canon over the decades.
I had the original M and it was trash as far as focusing went but it did produce nice photos when you got lucky enough for them to be in focus. I loved paring it with my massive L lenses
Biggest issue with this camera, and the sensor overall, is dynamic range. It's just really bad. Sure, you can record RAW video with it, but any newer camera with Log will get you more usable DR with a MUCH, MUCH easier workflow than what ML outputs.
This is weird...... I was thinking on getting not this camera but the M1 as I've found a few 2nd hand for less than 100 or at CEX for 125! and then your video comes up XD! (Hoping to win the bid on one I'm looking at so I'll do a quick overview video at a later stage) Once installing Magic lantern on this bad boi it'll do well for filming small venue concert sets, specially my friends bands! and adapted with vintage glass or some of comparable EF (which I own many of for my 6D MK2) and or EFS lenses should be a nice little combo!
These camera got such poor reviews when it came out in 2012. Nobody wanted them. With rebates, Canon ended up selling the Eos m w/ 22mm flash and ef adapter for about $350.
Why'd you hesitate when discussing the bulge Tom? Love these longer form videos. Wish I saw this before splashing on a a6400 last year. Was thinking of trying the M2 for the hell of it and I would have pulled the trigger.
@@kiwipics nothing in particular, but they're still older at the end of the day and the technology is quickly starting to get left behind, it's still a definite marvel what the EOS M/M2 is capable of with magic lantern though, i just think the definition of dead largely has to do with the fact that there aren't any more cameras being made either, which means these technically are gonna start to classify as vintage camera bodies within a few years, and that kinda is what makes it dead, there's no more innovation left for the system (except for third party lens but they still go on the same bodies so it's not like it makes sense to make many more) and even if third parties make many more lenses that push the possibilities to new levels it's still limited to the capabilities of the camera body... now EOS M/M2 are far from limited right now but I mean, for example even rolling shutter is a big improvement they just miss out on, still quite poor rolling shutter in 4K/5.6K, while other cameras are coming out with CMOS sensors that have global shutter... one of many areas where the technology is just gonna get so left behind in the next 5-10 years as a starting body it's really good, but I would personally still buy lenses for a newer mount and adapt it to these cameras so that I could later use them on a newer body when it's time for me to upgrade, because while this camera performs extremely well in some categories, it falls short in others purely due to the age it was developed in and the fact that there aren't other M cameras I know of which can handle something like 4K 14bit RAW without severe rolling shutter, ya know? Other camera systems have moved on to superior video capability in this regard and plenty more dynamic range, and doesn't help that they typically come with more megapixels too (though I'm completely aware that's not too big of a factor here) now just for straight photography, it's not too bad either, but i just know specs like the burst rate and phase detection AF are probably gonna fall short in these first/second gen mirrorless cameras hopefully i made some fair points here?
The M100 is the m50 mk I in a smaller form factor. The same applies to M200, regarding the M50 mk ii. They were brilliant for videos. You just had to hack it to get rid of the 30min recording limit
Canon themselves sabotaged M mount twice. First, for their DSLRs and then for RF mount. Yet, they have to kill it because it kept going. It was that practical and more than enough for 99% people while being affordable.
Canon's real problem is that they have never taken anything else than 35 mm sensor seriously. Even when Canon is only producing and selling Small Format cameras, they intentionally sabotage all others than 35 mm sensor, considering that they even only had in ILC category two formats, Half-Frame and Full-Frame behind same mount (EF and EF-S), until they made the EF-M mount (Electro-Focus Mirrorless) with same Half-Frame sensor size. Canon should have taken very seriously the Half-Frame, but it did happen only when they released the 7D and 7D Mk2. But if Canon would have really pushed, made something like a 5D but in smaller size and Half-Frame sensor, it would have sold better from the start. And then Canon main problem is that they were unwilling to cannibalise their 35 mm sales that is fully depending the lens purchases. They wanted that all buy the expensive and larger 35 mm image circle lenses regardless do they have Half-Frame body or not, and then they would "upgrade" to Full-Frame bodies as they already have lenses anyways for it. But the EF-M was exception to that, as it required more own lenses to be much smaller, but still same image circle as other Canon Half-Frame lenses. So they were seriously between rock and hard place. If Canon would have released about 15 autofocus lenses instead 8, they would had better system to offer (Sigma had 3, Tamron 1, Viltrox 3). Canon just can't push everything they have on tiny small body and own system. It was clearly meant to only keep Canon relevant on the m4/3 decade when Mirrorless was hot stuff, as Canon had nothing to compete and everyone talked about the future, so they bought that one decade with it and had few extra years time to develop R system.
This is the biggest problem camera companies have today: Their main market strategy is making sure customers cannot buy a camera that does what customers want it to do.
@@benjamindover4337 That is the same problem that mobile phone manufacturers had from 1990-2007. The greatest advantage that Apple brought to whole mobile phone markets, is that everyone focused their models in offer. With Nokia, market leader of > 42 % share, dominated by offering you a 7 versions of the phone model you wanted, but none of those had all the features you wanted. So you were always weighting compromises that what you need to give up, as you don't want to buy a multiple phones with you. But same time, the whole market became boring, and form has stuck to one, and every year you get a new version that you either take or leave it. The only good side is that we have finally got standards. Like USB-C for charging. You have acceptable cameras in each of them. The Android is backward compatible for long time (can't be said about iOS, as your hardware becomes obsolete day the support ends and you can't anymore download new apps to it as a new buyer). ILC's have always been about the system. The attachment system that combines body and lens to camera. And the way how things are sold, does not really form a proper tier system. Like, how about having cheap models like E-M10 that are tiny and lightweight, but have almost all the same features that top models like E-M1X has, but it just isn't as capable? Example, both can record in log and so on. But cheap can do only in Full HD and expensive in UHD? Or both can have same Live features, like Live ND and Live Composite etc, but similarly limited by buffer size how many frames can be utilized. Both have same sensor, same electronic shutter, but other has just more RAM to buffer those 200+ frames before slowing down, where cheap one is limited to 30-50 frames buffer. Now you have just some features denied completely. If overheating is a problem, then limit something, like instead 120 FPS video recording set it to 25/30 FPS only. Instead 400 Mbps video, limit it to 80 Mbps.

I love my original Eos M. Not the fastest one, but IQ is very good IMO. Combined with the 22mm pancake lens it's so compact! With the sigma lenses it's awesome!
Love my M100 + 2/22 (Set with 15-45)!
Which M-Canon is the best for photography?
There's a lot of things not mentioned here related to the "raw" video option. For example is that is only payable using special software in a computer and you need to process it to make it usable.
Tom!! You are Amazing!!
No, you are amazing! 🤜🤛
I've been using an M100 with the 22mm for a few years and have truly loved it as my "pocket rocket"
I just got a sweet deal yesterday, around 325 $ for the camera with the kit lens, two extra batterys, and a leather case plus the 22 mm f2 lens 😊
I had one, and almost wish I still did. The size, with the 22mm, was what I liked about it, but the battery life was pretty bad.
Yeah, the battery life isn't perfect, but totally manageable. And extra batteries are fairly cheap on Amazon these days
The m200 sensor is rated a lot better and worth the extra cash for virtually the same size
I recommend an M50 mark 2 instead. Much more camera and it uses the same lenses and has IS in body for video.
Wouldn't this (or any other of the small M cameras) be great with the new Viltrox 28mm pancake lens as an everyday carry camera. A shame that Viltrox will never release that lens in the discontinued M mount.
I still own this.. and still loving it,and I love the 22mm lens, too!!
Loved, loved Bargain Hunt!
Will you review something similar to this in all terms but also in production, it is quite frustrating to find out these small but great cameras are not available anymore.
You can find plenty of them on the used market.
But yeah, I will (and do) review new stuff too, but new smaller cameras don't come out all that frequently. Plus, not many manufacturers actually let me borrow their stuff for review and I can't afford to buy tons of new stuff 🤷🏻♂️
an a6000 or a5100 from Sony would be a better option, be cool to see you compare & review these two
If you like this you should get the 32f1.4 that is a very good lens.
Watching your video while literally staring at the exact set up that you’re using there just in a different color😂
Nice! 👌🏻
There's a crop mood by Bilal. You should try that. You can use 5.2k resolution
whats the difference between the m and m2 .. from what i see is basically the wifi function, is that correct?
can you post sample video footage from this camera shot in that raw format?
Cool wonder what happend if the keep the m series
I had the original M and it was trash as far as focusing went but it did produce nice photos when you got lucky enough for them to be in focus. I loved paring it with my massive L lenses
I own a M3 and have decided to sell it soon. The AF is too slow.
@@wilsonpalmpre how much you selling for?
@@Sky_watchersmusic I guess maybe around USD200 with the kit in local market.
@@wilsonpalmpre where are ya at?
Canon M was great. Wish they had supported it more.
Biggest issue with this camera, and the sensor overall, is dynamic range. It's just really bad. Sure, you can record RAW video with it, but any newer camera with Log will get you more usable DR with a MUCH, MUCH easier workflow than what ML outputs.
We need Magic Lantern on Sony to break their abusive cripple-hammer marketing strategy.
Did you re release this video
This one vs Nikon coolpix a...Which is better?
This is much better quality but you can’t zoom like i assume you can with Nikon
Fantastic review. I like this small Canon! Waiting for good price. I've catched one mistake - not 176 k but 180 k ;) Have a nice day! ;)
Thank you!
My sub counter is a live feed, but videos are recorded a week or two in advance, which is why the number doesn't match up ☺️
This is weird...... I was thinking on getting not this camera but the M1 as I've found a few 2nd hand for less than 100 or at CEX for 125! and then your video comes up XD!
(Hoping to win the bid on one I'm looking at so I'll do a quick overview video at a later stage)
Once installing Magic lantern on this bad boi it'll do well for filming small venue concert sets, specially my friends bands! and adapted with vintage glass or some of comparable EF (which I own many of for my 6D MK2) and or EFS lenses should be a nice little combo!
fab review, i have the m version, love it..
Do you have a link for the m2? having a hard time finding in amazon.
Old camera , perhaps only eBay ?
DO NOT buy used or discontinued cameras on Amazon. Check eBay or MPB.com 👌🏻
I have the original M and the M100. They are way underrated. I think Canon made a mistake killing off the M line.
There are so many lenses available, so it isn't a dead system at all.
@@kiwipics nothing new/innovative though and no new cameras
@@nindoninshu ... What's wrong with the existing bodies ?
@@kiwipics nothing in particular, but they're still older at the end of the day and the technology is quickly starting to get left behind, it's still a definite marvel what the EOS M/M2 is capable of with magic lantern though, i just think the definition of dead largely has to do with the fact that there aren't any more cameras being made either, which means these technically are gonna start to classify as vintage camera bodies within a few years, and that kinda is what makes it dead, there's no more innovation left for the system (except for third party lens but they still go on the same bodies so it's not like it makes sense to make many more) and even if third parties make many more lenses that push the possibilities to new levels it's still limited to the capabilities of the camera body... now EOS M/M2 are far from limited right now but I mean, for example even rolling shutter is a big improvement they just miss out on, still quite poor rolling shutter in 4K/5.6K, while other cameras are coming out with CMOS sensors that have global shutter... one of many areas where the technology is just gonna get so left behind in the next 5-10 years
as a starting body it's really good, but I would personally still buy lenses for a newer mount and adapt it to these cameras so that I could later use them on a newer body when it's time for me to upgrade, because while this camera performs extremely well in some categories, it falls short in others purely due to the age it was developed in and the fact that there aren't other M cameras I know of which can handle something like 4K 14bit RAW without severe rolling shutter, ya know? Other camera systems have moved on to superior video capability in this regard and plenty more dynamic range, and doesn't help that they typically come with more megapixels too (though I'm completely aware that's not too big of a factor here)
now just for straight photography, it's not too bad either, but i just know specs like the burst rate and phase detection AF are probably gonna fall short in these first/second gen mirrorless cameras
hopefully i made some fair points here?
That's pretty crazy
Is it available
Just for photography, a M100 is better imo!
Oh really? Why would you say that? I've never tried the M100
@@TomCalton the M100 has the same sensor of the Canon 80D and some of the specs are shared, it’s cheaper and looks better, but is less solid imo.
The M100 is the m50 mk I in a smaller form factor. The same applies to M200, regarding the M50 mk ii. They were brilliant for videos. You just had to hack it to get rid of the 30min recording limit
i just got that canon 22mm f2 lens for $54 today lol
9:38 you don't want to see the canon rebel t3s auto focus that looks amazing compared to it 💀
I accidentally upgrade to 2.0.4, no magic lantern available :(
Canon themselves sabotaged M mount twice.
First time I'm this early
Still loving the cinematic bars since you switched it.
Thanks! 👌🏻
Love this new style you’re going for!
m2 never on sale in uk and eu only usa and asia
I've found plenty on MPB.com in the past
And here I sit with a 20D and a 40D ....I feel left out
I'd rather get Sony ZV1f.
Price in Rupees
Too bad Canon kill M mount
The footage looks like old film footage.
Hi Tom! I'm glad to know you've moved to Canada and that you're happy in you new home. But I hope you've brought Georgia with you. Otherwise, I'll unsubscribe.
❤
No EVF,no deal........................
Ya but I got an iPhone. I think canon lost touch.
Canon EOS M fail only because Canon never really support it. EOS M50 is extremely popular but canon kill it anyway.
Don’t trust this guy.
