      I have the same issue, less than 4 sec video. Scoured the internet but not much info on why this happens on EOS M. I followed as above. Done this many times on different Sandisk Ex Pro 170 MB/sec. When I start recording it wont last 4 sec before "Automatically stopping...." I tested the card using Davinci Resolve Speed test. It shows 92.5 MB/sec and all fine up to 6K Videos (green ticked) but no luck on MLV EOS M. May be someone here had the same issue and could advise me? Thanks

      @GoGoGoRunRunRun 4 месяца назад

      @@bosekaspathySometimes swichting the camera off and on again helps, sometimes when I switch presets, change bit depth or change resolution the display shows write speed in yellow or red even, but after changing the same setting back and forth, it somehow goes green and I can record continuously. Sometimes just opening the ML menu and then close it helps when things are glitchy.
      When I want to test a different ML build, I always uninstall Magic Lantern (can be done from Canon firmware update menu) and then do low level format (Canon menu -> Format card, tick box for low level format) and then install the new build.

    Amazing comparison! This is extemely helpful. I think I'll be shooting a lot more in 4.8k 3x1 mode now instead of 5.2k. I thought that the 5.2k would be quite a bit sharper... but now knowing that this isn't the case, I would much prefer to be able to shoot in 12 and 14-bit. Also the comparison of the 1080p on the 3x1 mode to 3x3 is crazy! Huge improvement in 3x1. One major downside about the 3x1 mode is craaaaazy rolling shutter though. I think that is aguably the biggest benefit of the 3x3 1080 mode. You can pan pretty quickly and get handheld footage without everything looking like jello. I find that as soon as you try handheld shots on the 3x1 modes and have any major shaking, the rolling shutter makes everything look much too wobbly.

    • @russo-filmmaking
      @russo-filmmaking  Год назад +4

      I agree rolling shutter on 1:3 it's a fact and more on 1:1 mod. I normally use monopod and tripod in my footage, and if I handheld I use stabilized lenses and I try to avoid fast pan shots or rare movement because I don't like shaking movements in my shots: this way to film (and finally this is my natural style) help me to avoid rolling shutter effects. I have various family travel videos in my channel, 100% filmed handheld mainly in 5K or 2.5k and no wobbly effects are present, but this is possible because I'm very careful whit my shootings.

I have two Sandisk Extreme Pro 64MB cards the0 170MB/s versions and it seems mine seems to be peaking at about 74MB/s while recording however you seem to be hitting a full 80MB/s consistently so you seem to be able to hit a bit higher on your exposures because it stops recording. I noticed you had mentioned that 2.35:1 aspect ratio in 5.2k 10bit should be GREEN recording and stable I seem to miss the mark just by a little because of my 74MB/s transfer speed. When the horizontal pixel count is 1280 (with 16:9 UHD, 12-bits, 2.18 crop) and the magic 3X (1x3) is applied upon export from the MLV app, we get 3840x2160 video upon import to Resolve. Works perfectly! I think this by far is the optimal solution.

    • @S.Mullen
      @S.Mullen Год назад +1

      EOS M shooters are used to croping in camera something almost never done by those using other cameras. The letterbox look which I've seen demanded is almost always applied when editing. You want the maximum sized image for editing. The loss of resolution using 16:9 UHD compared to 4.8k is made up for by not needing to scale to 1080p or 2160p, despite being popular here, is something to be avoided!

    • @russo-filmmaking
      @russo-filmmaking  Год назад

      If you export it as prores or other codecs different from DNG yes you will get a 3840x2160 file ready to work in Davinci. If you export DNG from MLV to Davinci than you have to desqueeze it in Davinci

      Edited ChatGPT: Up-scaling a video image can result in blurriness, distortion, and a loss of sharpness, especially if the scaling factor is high. This is because the software or algorithm used to upscale the image has to create new pixels, which may not accurately represent the original image.
      Down-scaling a video image can lead to a loss of detail, especially if the scaling factor is significant.
      Fractional scaling (less than 1.0 scaling) can result in a loss of detail and clarity, especially if the scaling factor is very small. The effect on video image quality will depend on the scaling factor. If the scaling factor is close to 1.0, the impact on image quality may be minimal. However, if the scaling factor is much smaller, the image may appear blurry, and there may be a loss of detail and clarity.
      In conclusion, the effects of scaling on video image quality depend on the scaling factor and the algorithm used for scaling.

    • @russo-filmmaking
      @russo-filmmaking  Год назад +1

      @@S.Mullen Sure when you upscale you loose quality. But if you upscale in the correct way and you make your color correction using CDNG files you can get great results if your final delivery is for RUclips. Moreover the quality you can get with Topaz AI for example, it's amazing, a lot better than the super scale function that we have in Davinci.

Then when you want to change the aperture, you have to click and hold for about a second the right wheel and after that, quickly scroll the wheel. After some second the function is disable and if you scroll the wheel you change the shutter. • @russo-filmmaking
      @russo-filmmaking  2 месяца назад

      Thank you!! If your question is about whether you can film 1 hour continuously without stop recording, the answer is yes, you can, by configuring the camera with a certain resolution, color depth, and specific settings. The ambient temperature also influences to ensure the camera doesn't overheat. However, honestly, filming continuously in RAW for an hour is not the best decision, nor is this camera the most suitable for it, because one hour of continuous RAW recording, it’s equivalent to an huge file of approximately 150-180 GB. I'm sure no one wants that. If you are asking if you can film a 1 hour project like for example a documentary or a future film, yes you can film it because finally the 1 hour project is the results of the edition of a lot of short clips. For long continuously shots (more than 10 minutes continuously recordings) I suggest to use the native eosM 8bit video (not ML), mainly because of the big files generated through ML.

    • @russo-filmmaking

      I would use 2 options: 1) set crop mood to 3x3 1080p 16:9 14bit, then after refresh with the menu button, in raw tab select under aspect ratio 4:3 and under resolution rotating the wheel select 1152x1160. With this method you'll get 4:3 continuous recording, and you have to set kill global draw to off because otherwise you will not be able to see correctly the 4:3 framing. 2) this second method is the one I prefer because has more quality and less aliasing: use the setting for 1x3 4.2k 16:9 14bit that I explained in the video (leave kill global draw to on) and then in post-production crop sideways the image to get 4:3 aspect ratio. Thanks. Continuous Auto Focus doesn't work with this build (it works with Danne built even if it's very bad and I would never use it), with the crop mood only the half shutter auto focus works very well. Sorry but I don't understand what you mean with CAE, I don't know what it is. You have to use the last build which is 4/19. Regarding other answers very soon I'll post a video on how crop mood works with HDMI monitors, how half-shutter AF works, how to customize the buttons and other interesting things, Stay tuned

(4) "C" = Continuous So we have OTF "One touch AF" but not the more desirable OTAF/AE. Thus, Aperture must be dialed in. (5) No EZ way to adjust ISO. (6) No Histogram, yet I've seen in a demo! I also made some test filming 5.2k 12bit in bright ambient getting orange all the time for more than 3 minutes , and I didn't had any dropped frames, only beautiful images. Green is very secure, and orange works as well, it's more risky but you can use it for some minutes without any problem.

    Thanks for this informative video. I have never shot with mirrorless cameras. My experience is with higher end cinema cameras. I also teach Cinematography. I have watched some impressive EOS M / ML videos by skilled cinematographers including you. But I am bit confused by the actual resolution of this crop mood. It seems always losing horizontal resolution although it is named as 3K, 4K etc. What is the maximum horizontal resolution we can get and how long we can record the video. Could you please explain it a bit more. Thanks.

    • @russo-filmmaking
      @russo-filmmaking  6 месяцев назад

      In the video I show all the different modes and what they means at 2:30: 1:1 which read all the horizontal and vertical lines. For example we can use 2.5K 2.35:1 aspect ratio which resolution is 2520x1072 or we can use 3k 2:39:1 aspect ratio which resolution is 3072x1284. The only problem with 1:1 mode is the crop factor. Then we have a lot of choices with the 1x3 mode, known as anamorphic mode, which read all the lines of our image and bin three columns to one. It has a better crop factor. For example 5.2k anamorphic mode, 2.35:1 aspect ratio, has a crop factor x1.6 and has a resolution of 1736 x 2214: then in post you have to desqueeze the image multiply the horizontal resolution by 3. So 1,736x3= 5,208 letting the vertical resolution the same 2,214 ( for this reason its name is 5.2K, 5208x2214). Quality is excellent and the 1x3 mode is my preferred mode as far. All my video in the channel are filmed in anamorphic mode 4.2K for 16:9 aspect ratio, 4.8K for 2.35:1 aspect ratio and 4.6k for 2.20:1 aspect ratio.

      @@Maheel_Perera Moire and Aliasing is introduced when you shoot in 3X3 mode and only in certain situations. In 1x3 or 1:1 I never had problem with aliasing or moire. If you handle the cDNg files from ML in the correct way into Davinci Resolve, resolution for 2K film output for projection is at the same level of other superior cinema cameras. The only problem is that you have a more limited dynamic range, about only 11 stops, nothing that you can't handle lighting in the right way.

      For sharper footage 1x1 crop mood mode and 2.5K, 2.8K or 3k resolutions at 12bit are the best choice. The only problem that you have to take in count with 1x1 mode is the crop factor which is in some case more than x3, and the rolling shutter, so you are going to need wide angle lens 10-12-15mm for wide shots.

    • @russo-filmmaking
      @russo-filmmaking  Год назад +1

      Hi, first be sure to set your resolution project with the correct aspect ratio which is 2.35:1, so in this case (4.8k) you have to set the Davinci Project resolution to 4800x2040. Because when you film in 4.8K your resolution is 1600x2040 where you have to multiplay 1600x3= 4800. After that selecting the clip or various clips at the same time in your media pool or your timeline, go to your inspector tab, select retiming and scaling, then scaling, and from the pop menu select stretch. Your clip (or clips) now will have the correct aspect ratio.
      In case of 4.8k I suggest you to set the project with 1600x 680 ( where 680 is 2040/3), then use the stretching method I explain above, and make your editing and color. Finally when the project is ready before to export it, change your project setting to 4800x2040 and export it super-scaling tx3 (for better quality). Working on a lower resolution (but with the correct aspect ratio) It will help you during the editing process if you don't have a powerful pc or Mac

If you use the DUAL ISO function when shooting, then the heating of the CPU is 58-60 degrees. (But the processing time is greatly increased). With envelopes in PRORES, the temperature reaches almost 100 degrees. Do you have the same? And one more question (this is related to the volume of files). You showed very well that in CROP MODE you can use 12 bit instead of 14 bit for shooting, the difference is not so great. So the question is, can you share your experience of optimal preparation of MLV Files in MLV App for subsequent work in the Davinchi Resove program? Thanks a lot!

When I export cDNG I don't make any preparation in ML ( I only turn on focus dots map): cDNG is a Raw file and it contains all the information a quality you need to make your adjustment in Davinci Resolve.

      Yes you shoot with regular lenses in 1x3 mod and then in post you stretch the image. If you shoot in 3x3 mode and want a wide aspect image you have to select 2.35:1 aspect ratio in your settings. In this case you don't need to stretch the image. when you shoot in 57 HFR the aspect ratio is 2.35.1 and in post you don't need to de-squeeze. Only in 1x3 mode you have to de-desqueeze. I don't know what do you mean for green edge, I don't see it. Monitor, cell phones, iPad, TV and in general all the display can make the image different, it depends on how the display is calibrated.

    • @russo-filmmaking
      @russo-filmmaking  Год назад +1
