Hey Zeek, your cinematic videos are no joke my main inspiration for wanting to pursue film. I was wondering if you’ve used the uhs-i lexar silver 128gb and if it’d be slower in the eos-m than the uhs-ii one you’re using at 2:08 ? I’m looking to shoot 2.8k raw for 15 min continuous
Amazed by the video quality of this little thing. I have a question though: while I balanced my footage with a grey card and validated using the waveform in-camera, the CinemaDNG output in DaVinci always looks underexposed. I'm unsure if that is due to the camera metadata not being recognized by DaVinci or that I need to change the Color Space or Gamma settings for the RAW import? Essentially what you see on the camera GUI is not what you get in the final file. It can be easily corrected in both RAW and Primary tabs, but wondering if there's anything I'm missing in my workflow. Thanks for showcasing a great camera and democratizing cinematography.
Seems that Happy Birthday a good place to start. In a previous post you reference the ML build from the site was old and not to use it. Can you please share a link for windows to the latest build ..many thanks and I’m enjoying learning from you many thanks
Nice video. Does this work with the EOS M10 or is it just for to the original M? I 'm guessing the anamorphic modes that stretch the image expect an anamorphic adapter on the front of the lens, such as the vormax lens 1.33 adapter (cheapest one I've seen)
iirc all canon in the eos lineup can use ML, but they are not all as developed and the EOS M is superior in that regard to the M10. However you can check in the official ML forums and in their website up to which point the builds are developed for each camera. Some builds don't do much, others are game changing.
I am interested in trying out some old D Mount lenses, and I already have the RAF Camera d mount to eos-m adapter that they say preserves infinity focus. I realize that there will likely be vignetting which may actually work fine for use in a light show/video collage - but what is a good high crop mode that will give the best image quality? I read on a forum about the “1080 RAW Mode + x3 Crop Mode Enabled 1800px wide = 4.61x Crop (1.6x * 2.88x)”, which is the highest crop factor I’ve seen, but I haven’t got started with Magic Lantern yet so I don’t have a clue about how practical any of these modes are, and you are the undisputed guru of the eos-m with magic lantern, so what modes would you use to experiment with d-mount 8mm film lenses?
Yes you can enable a X3 crop in 1080 and that will be fine! You can also use 2K 1:1 Mode which has about a 3.5-4x crop and is a correct liveview. I'd personally use 2.5K FRTP and then shoot 16:9 1920x1080 or 2:1 and then stretch out the image in post to 16:9 which is what I did in the scene of me walking with the blue shirt at the start.
Thanks Zeek, I will try all of those modes once I get set up. So you think that 2.5k mode would be preferable to a higher cropped mode? I know even the Pentax Q vignettes with a lot of D-Mount lenses and it has a crop factor of 5.6x, but I’m not too worried about vignette-whatever has the best resolution raw image with the least moiré and aliasing would be best I guess. Thanks again, I never miss a video!
Great video! Question though, do the links to download EOS M RAW VIDEO .MLV Files work for cameras besides the EOS M? I have a 600D T3i and the entire presets folder under the video camera icon is not there. Is there a solution to that?
@Zeek. Question from a total beginner who really appreciates what I've seen from this channel: Would getting a couple EOS-M with magic lantern be a good "bang for the buck" option for interviews and video podcasts? We are looking for budget options for these things, and after researching I get the idea might be wise to spend more money on good lighting and save on cameras. We already have a couple of iPhone 13 pro, so could use those for sharpness and autofocus, but thought the EOS-M might give a more professional/cinematic look + shallow depth of field. Willing to spend time to learn and make it good in post. Any thoughts? What video mode and what lense setup would you recommend buying for this? Would a 7Artisans 50mm f/1.8 be good for this, or would it be really worthwhile to invest in a speed booster and a cheap fast EF-lense for talking head videos like this? Sorry for many questions, would love if you had any thoughts whatsoever🙏
In the last video, I have free downloadable Raw video files to play with. I was going to make a video about using this for doc/interview setup. RAW Video may be overkill for interview type stuff. You could use it for sure. 50mm is quite zoomed. I'd consider a 7Artisans 35mm F1.2 or 17mm F1.4 for wide. Otherwise Sigma 17-50 OS/Tamron 17-50 VC. 7Artisans 25mm F1.8 is also nice. For 4K budget, also consider Fujifilm X-E3, Olympus EM10 Mark III, or GH4 😎👍
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks for reply! Would love to see you make video about interview setup with EOS-M. Probably others would too! On the whole, do you think trading the sharpness and autofocus of the iPhone 13 pro setup (4K ProRes) for the shallow depth of field and cinematic style of EOS-M set up would be worth it for interviews? 4K cameras are currently above our budget.
@@skyscraperphilosopher8476 My bro has an iPhone 13, I like the camera a lot on it and think it's fine. With ML RAW there is a bit of a process involved, Export .MLV as DNG, grade etc. but it will have a shallow depth of field for sure. Sharpness for me isn't a big deal as I watch BTS and Docs online in 720p and sometimes less lol.

I am delighted with your channel and everything you comment on it, this canon m setup is super, I am going to experiment with it but I have never recorded in raw, in case I do all this with ML, how do I record the audio if I get to record in raw? I ask because in that part I always get lost, greetings.
Hey Zeek, love your vids on the Eos M, and only just getting mine back in action. Could you direct me to the files I need to download for magic lantern awesomeness? Cheers :D
Are you able to use your C-mount 16mm film lenses on the canon 5d mark 2, does that camera crop enough for them to be usable or is there vignetting ?? Your 16mm film emulation vids are amazing but I’m curious if you could do that with the 5dm2 as well. Thanks. Happy birthday too. Great channel.
@@ZeekEOSZ you mean specifically for the tiny 16mm lenses right? is there a problem with FF cams with other lenses in ML Raw, or any reason i should avoid getting the 5dM2, cause i may buy one soon to use my old full frame lenses from the 70s-80s at 1x crop
@@mavillejones5908 yeah 16mm C mount lenses won't work. The 5D2 also has aliasing. You can engage the 2.8k raw mode that shoots at 2.40:1 or reduce the resolution to achieve other aspect ratios. The crop is 2x.
Hey man, I got the EOS M and installed magic lantern but my menus don’t look the same as yours. I’m not sure if I did something wrong. I don’t even see any of those video formats popping up. I know you constantly change things and have custom builds so is that what it is? So you have a older video that shows the build from the very start and then you customized it?
Zeek Sir! I'm back for more suggestions. I was wondering...whats the smallest external monitor you recommend for the EOSM. I have a portkeys but want something smaller if it exists lol. It'll be for my glidecam. Thanks in Advance!
@@LouisLuzuka Try 2.5K mode and reduce resolution down to 4:3 it will be continuous. 2.5K FRTP also is a god choice. Id select 16:9 aspect then put 4:3 overlays on post too.
@@ZeekEOSZ zeek I've been shooting in 2k and having a blast, getting around 9-11 seconds, is there a reason why when I select 2.5k frtp it bumps me back to 2k frtp? or do I need to change something? do I need to reset my build or get a new build instead because I'm a little confused I definitely will enjoy the 4:3 so I have real estate to re-frame in post for vertical videos, 16:9 seems a bit too narrow. or do you suggest I do 16:9 and then re-frame from there just leave a little more room in post? that could work too..
@@LouisLuzuka in ml tab 3, if you have enabled 16:9 aspect ratio, it will override and enable 1920x1080, so switch aspect ratio to off and adjust it manually in Raw Resolution also in tab 3
Great video. I tried out the 5k anamorphic ftrp view but I seem to always get choppy footage in that mode. Have you ever had this problem? I'm using the latest danne's build on a sandisk extreme pro card.
Never experienced that before, can you send me an example on FB? if it's choppy in camera playback then that's normal. It will be fine once exported from MLV App.
@@ZeekEOSZ Ok it smoothed out once I uploaded it to RUclips. I guess it must be my computer can't handle the 5k file playback, which is weird because it can usually play 4k video no problem. Oh well, good to know!
Nice run-through. I'm still getting pink corrupted glitchy video, even though I'm using original Extreme Pro 170MB/s cards on 2.5K mode. Why do you think that is? Eos M and not M2. My camera had a shutter count of 2K when I received it last month.
Zeek I use my 22mm for photos giving me a 35mm but if I were to use the 15-45mm cropped is there a mode that is still reliable for when I don’t want to carry my 55-250mm everywhere? I feel like 22mm and 15-45mm is a good weight in my pocket and maybe 10-18mm if I need it wider than that any thoughts?
Hi Zeek, early in the video you mention that the HDMI output of the EOS M is less than 1080p and thus doesn't make it great for streaming. I'm thinking of using my EOS M as a simple webcam and am wondering if there are settings to adjust the resolution for the HDMI? By default, it seems really small, like 480p, possibly just mirroring the pixels on the LCD screen. Is there a way to bump that up a bit?
I screwed up and didn't use an extreme pro SD card to download Magic Lantern onto my Canon EOS M. Now it'll only record for a few seconds. Can I just pop an Extreme Pro SD card in there or is there some procedure I need to follow?
I gotta ask, the two things holding me back the most with this are: 1. What is the dynamic range at the different stops for the different modes (spefically 2.5k)? 2. Is the crop factor spoken about relative to full frame or to the APSC sensor size of the camera?
Crop factor is relative to full frame sensor. Dynamic range is around 11.6-12 stops. I don't have a dynamic range tester but that's what I would predict.
It's the older one. It's very nice. It's very comparable to the L series. I've owned the L 24-70 2.8 ii and F4. I feel the Tamron is sharper than the F4 and almost as sharp as the F2.8ii. I really like the Bokeh a lot with this Tamron, it's very rounded and clean.
If they go for the same money as the Canon L F/4, I'd go with the Tamron tbh, unless you need good continuous AF from your Canon camera. The Canon 24-70 f2.8 ii is tack sharp! But for the price, the Tamron has VC and it works very well, good sharpness wide open, people probably couldn't tell a difference unless you mentioned it. One thing to take note, is that Tamron's focus ring works like Nikon, it's the opposite way. The focus can also feel damper and less smooth on the tamron, you'd have to ask that question or have a fell of it youreself. .
What lens would you recommend for someone trying to use this camera on the go to shoot vertical vids for social media that would be look cinematic and that are going to be stabilize?
Hi Zeek, I want to buy a camera like your EOS M, is there a better buy in 2022? I want to use Magic Lantern and not spend more then $500 second hand. I want best quality in raw video and highest resolution.
Thanks for the video Zeek! Quick question, would it not be possible to film higher frame rates in 2.8k without pink frames? Do you have a solution to for recording slow motion in higher frame rates?
Not possible with high resolutions otherwise you will get a frozen live view. 2K 30FPS is what I like to shoot in the 2.5K FRTP Mode with FPS Override.
You've said "...in 1080 mode it uses every single pixel". Do you realy know that ML does binning and not skipping? I'm not sure if this camera does binning without ML
yo, Zeek, I can't access higher resolution than 1080p. 1080p works flawlessly with using a monitor, unfortunately, other modes don't. glitching on the LiveView. Currently, I am using your settings in Danne's build, what do I miss? please help.
Hi Zeek, Off topic, but still about the EOS M, have you ever had a transparent pink strip show up on screen in photo mode to the left side? Do you know why this might happen? Thanks.
Hey, it's me again :-) If I'm going to record in 2.4k raw should I get a 25mm lens instead of a 35mm to correct for the extra cropping, or is there another lens/method you would recommend?
Hello and thanks for your videos. Could you please tell me if ML allows you to record three hour non-stop video (without dropping frames). We must record conferences of at least three hours and then synchronize with the audio taken from the mixer (this is why the video must be continuous without frame loss). Is the Canon M better or the Canon 60D? Thanks for your help.
I've recorded for about an hour and a half, not three, using a SanDisk Extreme Pro 512GB 170MB/s Card. You will need a good Powerbank solution too. The 1080 mode with 10 bit enabled will work fine with no dropped frames in 24p.
It is very nice of you continue to update the setup of ML for EOS M in your channel.

So 2.3K 16:9 and under is about continuous raw, so recording for as long as you can. 2.4K 2.35:1/2.39:1 and under is also about continuous.
@@ZeekEOSZ ohhh i see, that clears up my doubts, thanks again!!
I am delighted with your channel and everything you comment on it, this canon m setup is super, I am going to experiment with it but I have never recorded in raw, in case I do all this with ML, how do I record the audio if I get to record in raw? I ask because in that part I always get lost, greetings.
No problem! Audio is fine and it works with RAW video. I just don't use it much.
Hey Zeek.
Why is the EOS m in the 1080 mode lineskipping?
Kind regards
Hey Zeek, love your vids on the Eos M, and only just getting mine back in action. Could you direct me to the files I need to download for magic lantern awesomeness? Cheers :D
Hello Zeek. Keep talking about your use of the eos m. Very interesting as I have the same camera myself.🙂
Will do! ;)
Unfortunately not. It will be more like macro due to the flange distance with EF Mount and hence why I don't use those FF Cams for ML Raw. Cheers! 😎🙌💯
Wouldn't you be able to stream with the 2.5k clean HDMI out in OBS? Or is all HDMI low res?
Great video!!!
With this firmware I can have a clean HDMI ouptut for this camera to send it to a capture card?
Great vid and explanation. Does ML work with the M50?
It doesn't unfortunately!
Thanks! this video is gold
😎🙌💯
Zeek, you are one cool dude.
I'm intrigued! Does the ML-firmware work with all the EOS M cameras, M10 etc?
Only M/M2. M is better with more raw modes.
Of course the magic lantern menu looks different
Have you ever tried with the Viltrox EF adapter/speedbooster with a fast lens like the nifty 50?
I'm so frustrated. The camera stops filming after one second. I followed your all your instructions and I have sandisk extreme pro 128gb.
is the 1.6 crop factor he talks about in the 1080p mode the APS-C one or is it added to the APS-C crop factor?
Zeek Sir! I'm back for more suggestions. I was wondering...whats the smallest external monitor you recommend for the EOSM. I have a portkeys but want something smaller if it exists lol. It'll be for my glidecam. Thanks in Advance!
Anything 5", there is ikam 3.5" but it's rare lol.
Zeek you have any advice for a long record time with high resolution? Anything frtp? I don’t mind the crop I’m looking for a bit tele
2.5K FRTP is my favourite high resolution mode. 2.2/2.3K is about continuous 2:1/2.20:1. 2.4K should be continuous 2.35:1/2.39:1.
@@ZeekEOSZ Zeek do you know which mode I can get for 4:3 😭🙏🏽 high resolution and longer recording times? 💯😀😘 Thank you so much 😘💖
@@LouisLuzuka Try 2.5K mode and reduce resolution down to 4:3 it will be continuous. 2.5K FRTP also is a god choice. Id select 16:9 aspect then put 4:3 overlays on post too.
@@ZeekEOSZ zeek I've been shooting in 2k and having a blast, getting around 9-11 seconds, is there a reason why when I select 2.5k frtp it bumps me back to 2k frtp? or do I need to change something? do I need to reset my build or get a new build instead because I'm a little confused
I definitely will enjoy the 4:3 so I have real estate to re-frame in post for vertical videos, 16:9 seems a bit too narrow. or do you suggest I do 16:9 and then re-frame from there just leave a little more room in post? that could work too..
@@LouisLuzuka in ml tab 3, if you have enabled 16:9 aspect ratio, it will override and enable 1920x1080, so switch aspect ratio to off and adjust it manually in Raw Resolution also in tab 3
thanks Zeek, I just bought an EOS M. but the record button doesn't react? any tips? Love your videos. Roel
Hey Zeek. Any advice for audio with the eos m? Any tips on how to get quality audio
Great Content as always. Zeek do you think a Sandisk Extreme 150mb/s would work?
95 or 170mb/s is fine!
@@ZeekEOSZ thanks brother!
Nice run-through. I'm still getting pink corrupted glitchy video, even though I'm using original Extreme Pro 170MB/s cards on 2.5K mode. Why do you think that is? Eos M and not M2. My camera had a shutter count of 2K when I received it last month.
Use 2.5K FRTP, shoot 10 bit, 24p, avoid high fps, and make sure card is not fake.
I woild %100 use 5K FRTP or 2.5K FRTP 16:9 or 2:1
@@ZeekEOSZ I will try that today thank you zeek! Is there a 4:3 mode available for those modes? I film vertical for shorts and tiktoks usually
@@LouisLuzuka yeah 4:3 can be selected in any mode, then reduce resolution to achieve that aspect ratio.
It's the limitation unfortunately.
What is the difference between a 170Mbs extreme pro and a 200Mbs one? Does it have to be specifically 170?
Thank you @Zeek.
I can't see Movie- presets on my eos - m magiclanttern. only bit rate (CBR).
I don’t get it how come it shoots 1080 from whole sensor and shoots 2.5 or 2.8 from cropped area of that sensor.
Beautiful image! :)
Thank you 🙌
After one installs Magic Lantern on this camera, can the camera still be used as a photography camera, or can it only be used as a video camera?
Quick question. If I soot 2.5K HDMI MODE, will I be able to lower the resolution to 2.2K 2:1 and have it shoot continuous?
Yes you can 😎👌
Hey brother! Nice videos! Do you know where I could find one of these handy little cameras?
off eBay or FB Marketplace
I screwed up and didn't use an extreme pro SD card to download Magic Lantern onto my Canon EOS M. Now it'll only record for a few seconds. Can I just pop an Extreme Pro SD card in there or is there some procedure I need to follow?
I gotta ask, the two things holding me back the most with this are:
Awesome video
Glad you enjoyed it
that Tamron, Zeek, is it the new or older version? Here in Korea, early canon L 24-70 are cheap, how would that compare?
It's the older one. It's very nice. It's very comparable to the L series. I've owned the L 24-70 2.8 ii and F4. I feel the Tamron is sharper than the F4 and almost as sharp as the F2.8ii. I really like the Bokeh a lot with this Tamron, it's very rounded and clean.
@@ZeekEOSZ looks great. they both go for the same money here, which would u pick?
If they go for the same money as the Canon L F/4, I'd go with the Tamron tbh, unless you need good continuous AF from your Canon camera. The Canon 24-70 f2.8 ii is tack sharp! But for the price, the Tamron has VC and it works very well, good sharpness wide open, people probably couldn't tell a difference unless you mentioned it. One thing to take note, is that Tamron's focus ring works like Nikon, it's the opposite way. The focus can also feel damper and less smooth on the tamron, you'd have to ask that question or have a fell of it youreself. .
Do you know if all these option are the same for Magic Lantern on M2 and M3 models?
What lens would you recommend for someone trying to use this camera on the go to shoot vertical vids for social media that would be look cinematic and that are going to be stabilize?
The kits lenses. E.g. 18-55 EF-M and 15-45 EF-M are nice tbh. I recommend them 👌
Hello, can you make a new built for people who is using eos m with autofocus kit lens ? We need thisss :D
Dad ✨🥺
Nicely Explain, can you help me I am enable to download Magic Lantern and up date my canon EOS M .
so what ML should i install to have your same version? Thanks for your helpful videos!
I will upload it soon in the community post! 👍
What happened to the $100 EOS M ? Happy Birthday....
You know...haha 😆
Is the M2 still missing shooting modes in 2022? Are they worth holding out for the M?
Thank you 🙏
Hi Zeek, I want to buy a camera like your EOS M, is there a better buy in 2022? I want to use Magic Lantern and not spend more then $500 second hand. I want best quality in raw video and highest resolution.
Thanks for the video Zeek! Quick question, would it not be possible to film higher frame rates in 2.8k without pink frames? Do you have a solution to for recording slow motion in higher frame rates?
Not possible with high resolutions otherwise you will get a frozen live view. 2K 30FPS is what I like to shoot in the 2.5K FRTP Mode with FPS Override.
@@ZeekEOSZ thank you so much!
@@ZeekEOSZ just to clarify, you set the fps to like 24 then fps override to 30?
@@josiahmora6460 Yep. If I don't want 30fps, I disable fps override.
@@ZeekEOSZ you rock! thanks for the amazing content and always helping people out! :)
If you're using higher resolutions with a monitor, then 2K 1:1 mode and 2.5K HDMI are the two that work.
Hi Zeek, Off topic, but still about the EOS M, have you ever had a transparent pink strip show up on screen in photo mode to the left side? Do you know why this might happen? Thanks.
I haven't. I'd take the lens out reset the camera and mount the lens back on. Ensure AF is disabled. You can reset ML Config I believe in Tab 7/8.
Hey, it's me again :-)
If I'm going to record in 2.4k raw should I get a 25mm lens instead of a 35mm to correct for the extra cropping, or is there another lens/method you would recommend?
25mm or wider is best 😎👍
Nice!!!!👍
what about h newer eos m models like the m3, m50 or the m200. do they sti pdate or better quality?
Does 15-45mm = 45-135mm on 2.5k raw with 3x crop? I’m curious now 🧐 🤔 hmm
With 3x crop it's in addition to 1.6x
@@ZeekEOSZ ohh so it’s 24-70 x 3 = a 72- 216mm that’s perfect for me!! Or 22mm x 3 like a 105mm wow 🤩
And 10-18mm would be a 48-87mm hmm 🤔
Thank you so much for your fast answer
