I'm totaly agree with you way of thinking : old gears still do very good job for a sweat price. I just received an Olympus e-m5 mk2 in a very good shape for less than 300 euros. It's realy a little Olympus e-m1 mk2, same functions but smaller and more functions than i can use.
The EM-5 MK II is my all time favorite Olympus Camera. 📷 But the EM-1 is still way ahead of its time. Shame that OM Systems isn’t swinging for the fences in terms of innovation.
From my read of today's camera market OM System is just as innovative as current tech allows, and is still out pacing other makers. They have by far the best IBIS - still - and the most advanced computational photography tech, and the best rated weatherproofing available from anyone. For good or bad, digital cameras are now a relatively mature technology - at least until some breakthrough sensor is developed - and there just aren't the opportunities for "break through" cameras like ten years ago when the likes of the E-M5 and E-M1 really were revolutionary. No one is making such advances anymore, and for that reason.
@@gregfeeler6910 I believe they need a full frame line of this series and the Pen series that can implement some of these cutting edge features. It should utilize the same Leica L mount as Panasonic. A full frame camera, with this type of design, just slightly bigger would be a major hit.
@@AllDay3004 With all respect I strongly disagree - OM System should not add any FF cameras whatsoever. Why not? Well, first, the last thing the world needs is yet another FF camera system. Are there there already not too many such cameras in a shrinking market? Secondly, OM Digital Solutions is the smallest of all the major camera manufactures and simply does not have the resources to spend diluting their brand when they need instead to upgrade the E-M10 and PEN series, and keep leading in technology. They just can't afford to go head-to-head with Nikon/Canon/Sony/Fuji in the FF market. And, thirdly, they are budling a brand around the inherent size and weight advantages of the MFT format, and with their industry-leading environmental sealing, are already the most portable and rugged camera system for any out-of-studio photography. To launch a FF line would be as much as to say "we were lying to you about MFT". Every format has it's advantages and disadvantages relative to some other format. For me, MFT is a perfect fit and I need and want OMDS to keep the MFT faith as Panasonic certainly isn't. When they used a FF body for the G9II that was a very troubling signal to me that they are not committed enough to MFT to build a proper body for one of their two flagship cameras.
@@photohomie one can dream! I just started out in photography and I'm glad I started with Olympus. The E-M1 II is such a great camera. Really only issue I worry about is the sensor size. I'd get a full frame version in a heartbeat
Hi Tom, I owned this camera, purchased it brand new back in the day. This omd Em1 original has one serious flaw, the left lug will eventually come off when you least expect it. This can cost you more than the camera body alone if a valuable lens is attached. Olympus made up for this design flaw with the much better omd E-M1 mark II in 2017, get that camera instead, you will thank me later.
IMO, the OG was the better camera as long as you didn't need faster AF bor 4K video. AF is more consistent in actually landing it correctly, and the sensor is much, much better, despite being slower and lower resolution.
I had two original E-M1s (still have one of them) and it's all you say it is, and truly is an amazing value for the money today. I have to say, though, that I think the Olympus E-M1 Mk II is probably one of, if not the best, overall bang for the buck used camera available today. It has several major upgrades over the Mk I, including a 20mp sensor, much faster processor, High Res 80Mp capability, and much more. And, clean examples doesn't cost all that much more than the Mk I. It might make for an interesting video if you were to compare the two. Thanks for an excellent presentation.
I've owned both, and prefer the original. II had too many false positives and worse IQ. The colors in the viewfinder weren't accurate to what was being captured, either, even after adjustment. A big issue for video.
@@BlueBomberTurbo I've not heard of and I don't have those problems with the Mk II. To the contrary the E-M1 Mk II seems to be the darling used MFT photography camera for RUclips reviewers. It's unfortunate that you has such problems. I'm had a number of Olympus cameras and never a problem, but there can always be a lemon.
@@gregfeeler6910 Hmmm, I tried using a pair at some weddings, and they just kept missing the target, at least 30% of the time. No matter what I set the AF sensitivity or AF point/shape/tracking to. Using Olympus 12-40/2.8 and Panasonic 35-200/2.8 V1. Also, the camera has a terrible color cast in the shadows in as little as 2 stops at base ISO, and it comes through SOOC at around ISO 6400, RAW or JPG. Very ugly color that can't be fixed without jumping through lots of hoops. An absolute deal killer for volume work. This isn't a lemon, either, as I've asked on mu-43, and checked samples throughout the internet, and they all, and really ANY 20MP m4/3 sensor ever, have heavy shadow color casts. It's why I gave up the system, because the superior (in IQ, at least) 16MP sensors died out. They weren't perfect with color either, but you could easily solve the consistent color cast they had with a simple EXIF edit. The 20MP sensors have rotating color casts that change every few ISOs or even every ISO, in the higher ranges. OG E-M1, though, had clean color throughout. The OG also has cleaner DR as far as you can push it, close to APS-C of the time, and isn't any worse at high ISO. Images are able to be easily edited without worrying about odd colors showing up. The only other recent m4/3 camera to come close is the G9 II, which acts similarly, but has faster speed and higher overall quality. The same sensor should be in the GH7, as well.
That is because a lot of people really do think that these noisy old sensors produce ' film like ' images. Nothing could be further from the truth. Let them pay three times more than the camera waas worth. When I bought my EM5 MKII I was also looking into teh Fuji X100 T. The price of a minty used one was from MPB or WEX was about £380.00 ~ £415.00. I decided against it as the fixed lens was very limiting for my photography. Now some fool is asking for over grand for a used one on ebay. Good luck to them.
I got the x10 for $175 is a great camera. I own the om-d e1 I got it for $280 and is one of my favorites I like how easy to control it is and how well made it is. I started with Canon then moved to Olympus and Fujifilm. I own the X100, X100T and X100Vi and xt-2 each camera has its own characteristics. I would consider all premium.
This was my first Olympus camera and this is why I’m completely hooked, I take this camera with me every day and it’s a joy to shoot I’ve been blown away by the quality of the images I get from this camera and I’ve had two full frames from other popular companies. I would recommend this camera to anyone even in today’s market.
It's crazy how Olympus and Fujifilm both had the EXACT same pattern in the 2010s. 2014 : release a camera that is flawed, but recognized as a very good mirrorless camera, with unique features and really good image quality (X-T1 and E-M1) 2016 : release a follow-up to that camera that is fixing ALL the problems that this previous version had, considerably bumped up the image quality, autofocus performance and can now be used in much more serious video production 2018 and beyond : never being able to release a camera that would completely bury the second version (there hasn't been any significant change in image quality between the X-T2 and X-T3, 4 and 5 (even despite the 40MP), same thing about the E-M1mark II : it had a pretty damn good 20MP MFT sensor, and there hasn't been a change in image quality since then. Even the OM-1 mk II still uses a 20MP sensor with very similar noise levels and DR values as the E-M1ii) 2nd gen camera of both brands are becoming actual sweet spots, and the "all I would ever need" camera for a LOT of people while the 1st gen camera gets re-discovered as a forgotten gem. I have both the X-T1 and 2, I wish I wasn't invested in so much camera systems already otherwise I would have got both the E-M1 and E-M1ii already !
The E-M1 ii seems to be insanely good for the price: weather sealing, dual SD slot, realiable autofocus for video and photography after the last firmware upgrade, the 20MP sensor and a lot of pro features. I'm considering buying a used one. Still can't decide between it and the G9 though, but the PDAF seems very appealing, also it's like 50-100$ cheaper than the G9.
Same here, hindsight that my first good digicam was an Olympus. I spent far too much money on Sony A and E mount cameras and lenses. I got into Minolta MD lenses and wanted to adapt to modern digicam, but the 1 x +1.1% adaptors were no solution on the A mount. On the E-mount A6000, hard to get sharp images due to camera/handshake. Looked into options, and Bingo! there was my old friend Olympus. Bought a used Em5 Mk II and an adaptor. I'm hooked on Olympus M43, enter in the MD focal length and Voila! IBIS on a sweet old Manual Focus lens. Found a used Em1 mk I for chump change and found a camera that can last me the rest of my life. I use the Em5 II for product shots and the Em1 for walk around shooting. It has it's warts, but the Em1 is the MOST comfortable camera I've ever used, even compared to the Sony A700 (nee Minolta 7D). It just feels right in hand.
When you talk about the older cameras would you also suggest what an average and preferred shutter count would be. I know I would be grateful and I am sure many others would be too.
Great review! My EM 1 actually arrived today haha 😂 battery is charging while I watched this video. I got it dirt cheap and I can't wait to try it out.
My personal favorite, especially for street photography, is the EM10 Mark ii because It's a little smaller than the em1 but still has most of the features. Paired with the a good lens, it slips easily into a coat pocket or just carry it with a wrist strap since it's small and light. 3 function buttons that you can customize to your heart's content, a tilting screen, built in flash if that your type of thing, image stabilization for good low light performance, good battery life, sturdy construction, and of course great image quality. The best part is, I just bought a second one for $210 usd on MPB. It was in "well used" condition, but it's essentially in perfect condition, minus a weak battery door latch... slapped a piece of tape on it and called it good. I seriously can't recommend this camera enough.
Fantastic camera I've had for years as my main body. Mine started developing the notorious shutter locked closed issue. A simple smack to the bottom of the camera always got it unstuck, it rarely happens but out of the 20 times this happened it always fixes the issue. The only way to have this issue truly fix the issue is to send it to OM system and have the shutter replaced, but isn't worth it for the price of another body or a used em1 mark 2.
Many years ago I actually took this on a trip to NYC when it was first released as I was reviewing it for the mag I was working for at the time. I just remember being so impressed by it. Shooting with it again recently brought back all the same feelings.
@@TomCalton the ergonomics are really nice, and even though it was considered chunky back then, it looks and feels quite nice and compact now. I'm a fan!
@@cameralabs Amazing what was considered chunky back in the days of DSLRs. Now we have m4/3 mirrorless that actually are chunky, and FF mirrorless larger than FF DSLRs!
I picked one up at CEX for £190 a couple years ago. aside from a sticky shutter its been absolutely flawless, combine it with a speed booster and its an absolute beast
I almost went for an E-M1 but was not a fan of the menus as a result of owning an E-M5. After using it a little I have to say Olympus OM-D cameras are pretty great and well ahead of their time. Instead of an E-M1 I ended up with the Pen-F.
@@TomCalton Absolutely. I found one really cheap as a result of wear on the body, but it was worth the price. Great camera. Hope you can find one soon, would love to know what you think.
Before I committed to M43 from FF I bought an E.M1 to test the waters. I loved it and decided to buy an E-M1 Mark III and sold off the E-M1. I decision that I regret. There was something about the RAW file colours that I really loved. I’m going to have to buy another just as a backup.
The menus aren't as bad as OP suggest. You get to know them. I needed to keep a PDF copy on my phone for my Canon camera too. The super menu is superb!
Bought one last year for a good price. Very happy with it. Great EVF, very fast AF, nice image quality, great IBIS. Nothing to complain about for me, I'm very happy with it.
I scored an OM-D E-M1 about a month ago for £199 and it was in excellent condition, came with a battery grip, and a couple of books specifically about the camera. I love it. It really feels "PRO". I had to get used to the very light shutter button though - at first, I thought it was faulty, but apparently, many pros prefer a light shutter button as it reduces potential camera shake. Again, another great video focusing on this camera's key USPs.
Super info packed, entertaining and covers everything I find relevant. Thanks for the awesome videos Tom! Love having you there to help me make better decisions.
I got the E-M1 II for about 450€ used and I absolutely love it. Compared to the Mk I it has 4K30 Video as well as 1080p60, so that was a big plus for me. Otherwise most of what you had to say about the Mk I is also true for the Mk II. It's just a great camera with a great ecosystem around it.
I’ve had an EM-10 for ever and it’s just a joy to shoot. It’s the build quality, controls, feel, and weightlessness of em is what does it for me. The 20mm stays on it almost all the time (the lens cap 8mm or unimpressive 14-150 do make appearances). IQ is not the best and the dynamic range is poor, but in controlled or decent lighting, this thing dominates. MFT definitely shines with primes as you’re taking a big hit with the smaller sensor but there are piles of cheap f1.7 primes to be hand for about 1-200$ USD. Battery life is decent too
This has been my 2nd camera for a year or so now, mainly for climbing or anywhere that i don't want to break my Nikon. It was actually around $200 when I bought it, and has been climbing ever since. Solid camera with an insanely bad menu system. All the updates that have come have really taken the camera way above what the original reviews showed. Video is still pretty rough but I think that's codec related.
And the phase detect AF means you can shoot any of that beautiful and fast original 4/3 ZD SHQ glass - if you can find and afford it, and if you can cope with its weight. E-M1 is a serious little camera and a pleasure to use... which surprises me as i prefer to shoot DSLRs.
My current setup: Olympus E-M1 w/ HLD-7 battery grip Olympus MMF-3 mount adapter Leica D 14-50 f/2.8-3.5 (the kit lens of the legendary Leica DIGILUX 3) Olympus VF-4 external EVF (has better colour accuracy than the E-M1 built-in EVF) This setup is my Dream Camera and still very capable of studio or street photography in 2024.
Thank you for this video. You are right about the EMD1. I’ve seen this body at ~$300. Cheap as chips. The body is virtually indestructible. Legendary IBIS. Very pleasing, to my eyes, colors though a bit vibrant vs. accurate. Instead I purchased an EMD1Mii for $400. For ~$100 more some very important upgrades. My favorite is the PDAF. This body seems a good compromise between price and features. I’m sorry for going yes but………on you. If M43 is a system you want to use or explore, the EMD1 or Mii is an inexpensive way to try the system out. At the prices these bodies are being bought & sold for, you can try the system for a small amount of money. Don’t like it? You can sell these bodies for virtually the same as you bought them for. Plus the Olympus lenses are very good. Minor gripe about both bodies. The on/off switch is on the left side of the top plate. Olympus ran out of real estate on the right side so where else could they place the on/off switch? That being said, for me, an awkward place to place that switch. Since we only use the switch for on & off it isn’t the end of the world as we know it. No camera is perfect. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)
Olympus made a tons of impressive cameras, I still don't know why they aren't more popular than bigger brands here in Indonesia, it's just really rare to find E-M1 in good condition for a cheap price. Maybe because most people will go for Canon or Nikon (back in the days, mirrorless aren't really popular in here, the popularity of mirrorless started to rise when Canon released the EOS M3). Mostly the prices for well used EM-1 is around ~400$/IDR 6.500.000, still quite affordable for such crazy specs.
Picked up a copy for a bargain £250 a few years ago only criticism is not great in low light but some cracking features. Picked up a couple of Panasonic lenses that are great for the price and an adaptor to use all of my vintage lenses❤ favourite feature is ibis
I’ve just had an E-M1 Mk2 by accident for a few days (was trying to hire the new OM-1 Mk2 but got too excited too quickly and pressed the wrong button). I’m blown away by how good it is, but what really stood out is how light it is. With the 12-40 f2.8 Pro on the front it came in at 989g vs 1400g for my X-H2 with the 16-55 f2.8, and 1650g for the A7iv with the 24-70 GM. Image quality is mega for an ‘old’ camera, and whilst it obviously can’t keep up with the 40.2mp sensor in the Fuji, or the AF of the Sony, it packs a hell of a punch for what it costs. Great review, and given my recent experience, I may just have to pick one up.
Imo 4/3 is the best sensor for macro because of the depth of field and light weight (helps reducing camera shake), and the image stabilisation is superb. The only thing I don't like about the small sensor and depth of field is that landscapes look a bit flattened but the plus side is guaranteed edge to ege sharpness.
KEH has one for $405, which is great price for a like new+ condition, meaning it has been rarely used. I owned one when it first came out. 16mp does a good job.
The big thing I think about the Olympus cameras is many offered IBIS, back when most APSC and FF cameras (mainly because they were DSLRs) did not. And even Sony's competing a6000 line didn't have IBIS until the release of the a6300 series and a6500 series, so it was a big spec that a lot of people liked because it wasn't found that easiy on most cameras at the time. I don't know if the first gen EM1 or EM10 had it, but subsequent editions (the Mark II's and later) did.
Mk1 of em1 and em5 had ibis I had the em5 and still use my em1. I also have a sony A7 but the em1 is my go to camera. it has the best camera feel in the hand of any camera I have ever held and the ibis over 10 years has allowed me to do things I could never do with an SLR.
IMO, this and the A6000 are the best beginner cameras on the market. Both are extremely competent for photography, and don't offer much in the way of assists/bells and whistles to get in the way of learning the basics. They're also extremely compact compared to even the cheapest DSLRs, no matter the age.
When I decided a few years back that it was time for a new camera, I wound up with an E-M10 iv. It's not quite an E-M1, but I've no complaints. The biggest thing I find it lacking is weather sealing. I do really like the control layout and ease of quickly accessing key settings. NGL, kinda envious of that switch for the front and rear dials.
@@planeador21 There are buttons that can be assigned, to be fair I probably haven't dug as deep as I should into some of that. It starts getting menu-divey and it never really turned into a big enough issue for me to worry that much about it. If it was right there like the E-M1, I'd probably use it all the time.
I agree with you. Also buying a pana g80 now is a very good deal. If you buy an used oly em1mk1 pay attention to the rear wheel that sometimes is defective
Is omd em10 still good to buy? I have found one in secondhandmarket and it's only 70 usd only body (i already have m4/3 and 4/3 lens) I have talk to seller he said every function are fine except that flash isn't pop up.
Olympus e-pl1. I found one for $60. Most of the Pen e-pl1-3 and e-p1-3 will have broken IBIS, but that has not been a problem. They also start getting noisy around 1600 ISO. But still great for EDC with small Chinese lenses, kit lenses, and adapted film lenses. Fun little cameras.
@@JeffreyJohnsonC oh that's a cool one I just check it out haven't found a listing yet. But thanks!👍 what I found so far is Nikon Coolpix s01 but it's expensive. Also Sony DSC-J10, Olympus D705, Nikon E4600 and Nikon Nikon S200. They are a bit over budget all but I reckon I can get a discount. Do you know if any of these are worth it?
thanks for this, just picked one up on facebook marketplace for $200 US with battery. Now I'm looking for a Lumix 20mm 1.7 to start off... I hope this combo will be my poor man's GRIIIx but with an EVF
I have two of them and they are wonderful and easy to use and walk about with. They are indeed robust. At an airshow I was in the process of changing lenses and a rather large child ran into me at full tilt. The camera came out of my hand and landed on the tarmac on one of the strap lugs and the lens hood of the 40-150 Pro. The hood broke and there was a crack in the body around the lug. The camera and lens both still functioned perfectly. I fixed the crack with two part epoxy to seal the crack and bought a new hood
Beware the sticking shutter on them. My second one did it all the time and was exchanged for another which seems to be free of the malady. Apart from that, it's a great little camera and the IBIS at last brings me back to the Pentaxes I was using a decade ago.
Is it possible to stop AF during video recording? and then enable AF again during recording? How does the Canon M50 do it, for example, with a gentle tap of the finger on the LCD panel? I couldn't find it anywhere.
i have a load of cameras and my EM10 gets used all the dang time. It's so tiny and delivers excellent results (provided it's not dark). Favorite camera...
I’ve been tempted to replace my 1st gen E-M1 with new flagships EVERY YEAR throughout the decade, and yet, every time I go out and shoot photos, my E-M1 proved itself that I don’t need to
I still want to get one of this model. It look very gorgeous back in the day but Olympus is never my top priority to buy though I'd like it on my collection.
I have the chance to buy this camera (in pretty good shape, shutter count: 12 thousand) for 250 US dollars. It has all the bells and whistles (box, cables, hot shoe cover, flash jack cover...etc.) and 2 spare batteries. I'm planning to top it up with a 12-40mm f2.8 pro lens for 450 US dollars and I'm all set for some time. At least. I do not want to spend more money on photography right now.
Got this new in 2016 and its still here. beside the Mark III Version of the em1. Im using the 1.8 17mm Lens on it. Perfect Match. Software Tipp: Olympus/OM Systems Workspace. It got a ai Denoise function who is as good as dxo! Great Software. And if you on the go and your Notebook is too slow, plug that camera into the pc and Workspace will use the Camera to speed up things very well.
The E-M1 is no doubt an amazing camera. I would however pick the mark ii or iii. I do a lot of very dark conditions concert photography, where I need high ISO. With the free software OM Workspace from OM-System, I can use AI Noise Reduction to improve the quality of my high ISO photos to a point, where I don't need expensive photo editing software at all. But, the AI Noise Reduction in OM Workspace only works with RAW files from the E-M5 iii, E-M1 ii, E-M1 iii, E-M1X, OM-5, OM-1 and OM-1 ii. I'm currently using an E-M5 iii, and my experiences with the AI Noise Reduction in OM Workspace are so good, I'm saving up for an E-M1 iii in as good condition as possible as it seems to be the best option for my specific needs.
got it as a substitute for the heavy and old canon 5d a couple years ago and its a perfect cam for roaming and traveling, using it now with my canon lenses via a viltrox boost adapter. i would like to have some older zuiko lenses but their now well sought after and quite expensive, henfce they were pro and still hgave an impeccable optical quality
One of my two main cameras is my EM5 Mark 2 and I love my Olympus cameras. Much like my Pentax you get alot more for your money than you do with the bigger manufacturers. I am not sure about the future of the brand though. OM Systems is owned by a company whose business model is more about flipping formerly failing businesses or product divisions and not really about being a serious player in any particular market. For example they took over the Vaio line of laptops that was formerly Sony. They brought that product line back to profitability but most people barely know that product line is even still around.
Olympus changed to CMOS sensors way before the original E-M5 and E-M1 were introduced. I owned examples of the early CCD Four Thirds bodies and most of everything from Olympus & OM Systems since, and in my opinion all this hype about CCD sensors having some special looks is just smoke and mirrors. Any creditable camera company strives for accurate color reproduction irrespective of the sensor in use. None that I know of, certainly no Olympus, were trying to emulate some "film look" as they were striving to advance digital camera technology. Just my thoughts on this. Peace.
All'epoca avevo uno studio fotografico. Come secondo corpo, avevo una Olympus E-300.
Still have mine. I see no point in 'upgrading' to the Mk 2. 3 .4 for what I do. And it STILL knocks spots off other cameras for the average cometant amateur/semi-pro photographer. Lenses are - always - the deciding factor. 'Oly' Pro glass. Every time.
I have a question. My videos have a very strong audio noise with this camera. It sounds as if you were standing right by the sea and could hear the sound of the waves. Have you also noticed that there is an option to prevent this strong background noise from occurring in the sound?
My walkaround is a Fuji X100 and my serious cam is a Sony A7. If again I may have gone M43 instead of A7 considering lenses. The only things to consider are low light as wide angle.
Still rocking my 70s OM1 and the film shots I get on it rival my favorites ive ever shot on any modern Camera. Id love to add a modern Olympus as I already run the old glass on my Fuji XT3! Lets not forget as tech advances Full Frame gained the low light and clarity performance of the Medium Format, this works in levels as the Crop Sensors now rival Full Frame of yesteryear, and Micro 4/3rds rivals Crop sensors of the past. Sure, you lose MP and certain ratio aspects... but the point stands. Olympus camera software and durability I'd argue FAR EXCEEDS any brands on the market and if they make a Full Frame everyone else is screwed lol. To this day some of the worlds most impressive macro shots and nature shots were done on OM systems. The Current OM1 software for instance, makes everything else look like a joke, especially with sensor shifting, 6 axis stabilization, INSANE tracking, LIVE VIEW long exposures (why isn't this standard from everything?) and planet class weather sealing.
OMD EM1 will always be one of my favorite cameras from Olympus. I loved all their designs and features. I'm still waiting for Om1 mk2 to come down in price. Meanwhile my all time favorite has to go to Olympus Pen F. I sold every camera gear but I will never sell my Pen F.
I just ordered one. It got here a couple days again. I still have no idea what lens to get. Had to order an Olympus usb cable to update firmware from 4.0-4.6! I’m excited
If you don't mind manual focus, get a $60 ttartisans 25mm f/2. Fun little lens and good quality images. Use that while you figure out which Olympus lens too buy. Or get a kit lens or 2.

@@AllDay3004 OM Systems joining the L Mount alliance? With their glass it would be huge.
@@gregfeeler6910 I have the MKii and it's a phenomenal machine for product photography and video where the large DOF is a huge advantage.
my Fuji X10 now sells more than when I bought it. I have the OMD-EM5 II and its a great camera. Do that next so it will increase in value.

@@lensman5762 i use sony, but ive been watching videos about fuji and it seems like a pretty good camera for how old it is
This was my first Olympus camera and this is why I’m completely hooked, I take this camera with me every day and it’s a joy to shoot I’ve been blown away by the quality of the images I get from this camera and I’ve had two full frames from other popular companies. I would recommend this camera to anyone even in today’s market.
It's crazy how Olympus and Fujifilm both had the EXACT same pattern in the 2010s.
2014 : release a camera that is flawed, but recognized as a very good mirrorless camera, with unique features and really good image quality (X-T1 and E-M1)
2016 : release a follow-up to that camera that is fixing ALL the problems that this previous version had, considerably bumped up the image quality, autofocus performance and can now be used in much more serious video production
2018 and beyond : never being able to release a camera that would completely bury the second version (there hasn't been any significant change in image quality between the X-T2 and X-T3, 4 and 5 (even despite the 40MP), same thing about the E-M1mark II : it had a pretty damn good 20MP MFT sensor, and there hasn't been a change in image quality since then. Even the OM-1 mk II still uses a 20MP sensor with very similar noise levels and DR values as the E-M1ii)
2nd gen camera of both brands are becoming actual sweet spots, and the "all I would ever need" camera for a LOT of people while the 1st gen camera gets re-discovered as a forgotten gem.

You have a lot of videos on old cameras. We need a top 10 under $200 or $300 with those old cameras. PLEASE
Great photos!
I have the E-M5, E-M5ii and E-M1ii. All wonderful in their own way and I still use them regularly.
Is em5 good
@@barrylyons8102 EM5 is a good starter camera into M43 system. Could try looking for the EM5ii as it's slightly better with features.
Loved the EM1 - it was my main camera for a long time!
Many years ago I actually took this on a trip to NYC when it was first released as I was reviewing it for the mag I was working for at the time. I just remember being so impressed by it. Shooting with it again recently brought back all the same feelings.

I almost went for an E-M1 but was not a fan of the menus as a result of owning an E-M5. After using it a little I have to say Olympus OM-D cameras are pretty great and well ahead of their time. Instead of an E-M1 I ended up with the Pen-F.
Nice! I'm desperate to try out the Pen F - the prices are just a little too high for me at the moment though.

Bought one last year for a good price. Very happy with it. Great EVF, very fast AF, nice image quality, great IBIS. Nothing to complain about for me, I'm very happy with it.
My concern with this camera is dynamic range. If you are considering to buy this camera and dynamic range is critical for you, check it out before.
you can find the mk2 at vey good prices plus it was given a masive update to lift it above the mk1
This guy makes Garry Fong look 👀 professional 😂.
This is my main camera for stills and the picture quality is amazing from it.
Battery life is decent too
"Back in the day". I felt like this camera just came out! Apparently it's been 11 years that I've been wanting to buy a camera.
My current setup:
Olympus E-M1 w/ HLD-7 battery grip
Olympus MMF-3 mount adapter
Leica D 14-50 f/2.8-3.5 (the kit lens of the legendary Leica DIGILUX 3)
Olympus VF-4 external EVF (has better colour accuracy than the E-M1 built-in EVF)
This setup is my Dream Camera and still very capable of studio or street photography in 2024.

You can set the 1/2 switch on the right to be the power switch.
Got the Mii in January paired with the 12-40mm and it slaps!
m43 sensor are better to be little overexposed, you can get more details back from highlights and reduce noise ... they are really great performers
True
i remember that camera, there was a time where they had a bunch of wildlife photographers using that
Is this a good camera for starting?
Olympus made a tons of impressive cameras, I still don't know why they aren't more popular than bigger brands here in Indonesia, it's just really rare to find E-M1 in good condition for a cheap price. Maybe because most people will go for Canon or Nikon (back in the days, mirrorless aren't really popular in here, the popularity of mirrorless started to rise when Canon released the EOS M3). Mostly the prices for well used EM-1 is around ~400$/IDR 6.500.000, still quite affordable for such crazy specs.
This camera has a history of the shutter locking closed! I have one and was out shooting and int he middle of the shoot!
Very very nice plug bro, well played!
Great review, and given my recent experience, I may just have to pick one up.
absolutely love the design of this camera
I just bought one …. have a hunch the files will have a nicer quality than later cameras … it’s built like a tank
This is still my flagship camera. I don’t plan on upgrading anytime soon.
Olympus dials are seriously the best.
When I decided a few years back that it was time for a new camera, I wound up with an E-M10 iv. It's not quite an E-M1, but I've no complaints. The biggest thing I find it lacking is weather sealing. I do really like the control layout and ease of quickly accessing key settings. NGL, kinda envious of that switch for the front and rear dials.
em10ii has a button that works the same. Doesn't the mark iv have something similar?
@@planeador21 There are buttons that can be assigned, to be fair I probably haven't dug as deep as I should into some of that. It starts getting menu-divey and it never really turned into a big enough issue for me to worry that much about it. If it was right there like the E-M1, I'd probably use it all the time.
I agree with you. Also buying a pana g80 now is a very good deal. If you buy an used oly em1mk1 pay attention to the rear wheel that sometimes is defective

@@palmerino1965 I picked up a 25mm Panasonic lens, and its MUCH faster auto focus than the 20mm. I have both now.

Saving up and get dxo photolab instead, for much better AI noise reduction and raw converter
I'm considering the Olympus OM D E-M1 vs Fujifilm XT1, not considering the price since they are quite close where I lived. Any advice?
I don't like micro 4/3 cameras since my Olympus E500. 😎
It had more hot pixels than my fireplace .
even better when paired with the 12-40 pro lens :)
got it as a substitute for the heavy and old canon 5d a couple years ago and its a perfect cam for roaming and traveling, using it now with my canon lenses via a viltrox boost adapter. i would like to have some older zuiko lenses but their now well sought after and quite expensive, henfce they were pro and still hgave an impeccable optical quality
I wish someone would invent a battery grip for the e-m1.1 that supports the newer batteries.
Thanks for this video. I found many cameras eBay around $300
I have a Sony a5000 I only have a couple lenses for this Will these lenses fit this type of camera
Thank you , massive fan of mark 2 … was curious if mk 1 had a more old fashioned pleasing sensor with those colours…
Every time.
Wanted a canon r7 for macro. I decided to go for olympus mark IV bargain and 60mm zuiko with rainox 250.
All for the price of an r7 body
Hi i just saw the video of the lens hood and nd filter and I would like to know where can I buy one ?
I have a question. My videos have a very strong audio noise with this camera. It sounds as if you were standing right by the sea and could hear the sound of the waves. Have you also noticed that there is an option to prevent this strong background noise from occurring in the sound?
I'm thinking of getting my first camera, I've found some of these around the £200 range. Do you think it would be a good place to start?
I'm angry with you because i couldn't find this camera at this price here in Brazil!! Kidding lol
Thanks for the content brother!
I bought a few lenses. 14-42 Panasonic. 45-150 Panasonic. 25 Panasonic. Lastly tried out the yongnuo 45 it’s a decent kit and takes up no room.
Olympus cameras look great. The EM5 mk2 with the 17mm f1.8 looks as good as the x100vi.
This is one big advert!
I’d spring for the extra cost of the mark ii
