  • A beef between Page and Plant just hours before Led Zeppelin's second reunion in 1988 created heavy tension and animosity over playing Stairway To Heaven, a song that Robert refused to do. The performance made fans wonder, was it good or worse than 1985? The event was broadcasted via FM Radio and HBO, the band's show at Madison Square Garden was the grand finale for Atlantic Records' 40th Anniversary 13-hour concert that began at 1pm on Saturday May 14th. Jason Bonham played a great show honoring his father through the music, John Paul Jones delivered the goods like a PRO. This is the story of 1988. #ledzeppelin #jimmypage #robertplant #johnpauljones #documentary #johnbonham #classicrock #newyork #newyorkcity #madisonsquaregarden

    It's always amazing how much rare live footage you dig up. Especially because this was a time when taking a camcorder into a concert was tricky to pull off. Robert took so long to embrace his Zep roots. As for JPJ i've always seen him as the secret weapon in Zep. That quiet guy off to the side gluing it all together without any fuss or attention. The perfect balance for Jimmy's dynamic stage style. Yet when JPJ is in rehearsals he's showie and outgoing, all that is packed away when he's playing live. Extrovert rehearsing / Introvert playing live. Incredible to witness. The Led Zep rehearsals sounded like any garageband, again incredible find.

    I have been watching through these episodes. Your series is by far one of the very best ones I have watched documenting a band. The wealthy of info is amazing. If a fan was waiting for an anthology on Zep's body of work, I'm not even sure it would see the light of day. I doubt you would see as they say "Warts and all". Also this for me is when RUclips works best. Even with the hoops RUclips now has on creators such as copyrights. RUclips allows self produced efforts such as yours to live. I am thankfully both for that and for hard working people such as yourself putting in the time to do something as informative as this is. I am now going to continue my watching. Thank you.

    This was a blockbuster of a episode, Jose. Between the splicing, soundtrack scores, editing and narration - it was all excellently done. I watched this performance as it unfolded in ‘88…and all of us felt exactly like everyone did by the end. We wanted to be more fulfilled than we were but…at least they did it. Like you say at the end…Robert’s Rocky Balboa moment of Hey Ahmet, we did it. It was finally over. The subject of Jimmy’s guitar tone changing in ‘75 is a wide subject too. If you listen to anything ‘73 and prior you’ll clearly hear the difference. The echoplex/Marshall/LP Brown Sound was ever present in ‘73. Seattle 7-17 Center Coliseum recording showcases this perfectly. Jimmy’s got to be thankful that the bootleg bandits captured some of Zeppelin’s finest moments - that otherwise would be gone like a puff of smoke. Some soundboards from ‘75 his playing sounds like birds pecking at the guitar neck. This was the point of their descent in my opinion and only worse (health wise) by ‘77. His tone was better in ‘77 I think. Really dirty and gritty…and just HUGE. For instance listen to the descending riff starting on B to F# on Sick Again…especially from the final night of the LA ‘77 shows 6-27. Mike Millard captured magic this night - equally as much as his first nights’ work! His seat was (from what I’m hearing) definitely on Jimmy’s side of the stage again. Lastly, Jason gets a thumbs up from me for being “one of us” as far as a true Zeppelin fan and bootleg lover. His drumming really did make a difference that night in ‘88! Thank you Jose. I very much enjoyed this one.

      Hey L.B! Thank you for this great comment, i agree with you the decline started in 75 tone wise, i have some theories on this as well. The 73 combo is a winner, that Seattle show yeah, it's insane, like many, that was probably my first 73 bootleg, it got me hooked on that tour. Now yeah, i know the part you mentioned on Sick Again, the descending arpeggio with the crunch in 1977 is killer, i believe something happened to Jimmy as soon as he became a more rhythm player and his soloing became expressionistic Picasso-ish. I'll be honest, this is why Physical Graffiti for me, is not his best work, i can HEAR someone falling the dark halls of excess and goddamn it Keith Richard's "do you have a minute to talk about heroin B.S" as he describes it in his Autobiography. Page was one of the greatest soloists ever, his guitar sound changed to an ongoing Lament it seems. 1993 Osaka with Coverdale had a nice beefy tone though. I can hear the difference in the tone of Jimmy's guitar in 1975 "birds pecking at the guitar neck" is spot on. I do enjoy that tone because it is Jimmy's playing without all the added distortion....more of a pure guitar sound.....you can really hear the natural fretting and picking of the guitar strings. It is maybe less dynamic but I loved his solos in 1975. You can hear more mistakes in his playing but I like the rawness of the sound. I definitely agree that the overall quality of Jimmy's sound was the best in the 1973 shows and that was Jimmy playing at his best during his Zeppelin era in 1973. I think the drugs starting affecting his playing in '75 and definitely in '77. But Jimmy's balls out playing and the emotion he plays with has always made him one of my favorite of all time next to Hendrix.

      @JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories  Год назад

      Mike absolutely. The 1975 tone was great for thr Physical Graffiti stuff but he didnt do Ten Years Gone unfortunately or In The Light. It seems he wanted to transmit the studio vibe on stage. I saw Plant in 1988....enjoyed his show quite a bit. His relationship with Page took a huge hit when Karac Plant died, and Jimmy kept his distance while Robert and his family mourned. Jimmy felt that was the appropriate thing to do. Robert felt his "close friend" let him down. Bonzo was there for Robert emotionally during this dark time....Robert felt Jimmy and JPJ abandoned him emotionally when he needed their support. While they disagree about the right response at the time, Robert became more distant towards the band, and his angst was reflected in the lyrics of many Zep tracks, especially Carouselambra - which basically rips Page a new one, literally ("Where was your helping? Where was your bow?"). Robert wore his heart on his sleeve, while Jimmy was more introverted and reclusive. The perception that Jimmy was not as much of a "close friend" to Robert (more of a special business partner) was something that continues to this day ("take of the fruit, but guard the seed" - Carouselambra.....enjoy the successes....but keep your family as your priority).

      I think it’s all shite….the lyrics sound good and they rhymed and that’s it. Plant wouldn’t never distance himself from Page….he couldn’t afford to! Plant is just an over excited singer(a bad one at that)who realises that he is nothing without Jimmy Page.

      @@dreadpirateroberts4052 No, the lyrics are clearly calling out Page, and its not the first time. Plant was angry at Page during the recording of Presence, when Robert was rehabbing from his near-fatal car accident, and Jimmy forced Robert to record the album when Robert wasn't fully healed. Robert recorded the lyrics for that album while sitting in a wheelchair - Robert wanted to wait. In the song: "Hots on for Nowhere," Robert wrote: "Now, I've got friends who will give me their shoulder...When I should happen to fall....The time and his bride growing older.....I've got friends who will give me fuck all." Later on, same song, Robert sings: "And if you ask my advice, take it slower...Then your story'd be your finest reward." Robert slams Jimmy in Carouselambra - the entire song is about the band rotting away from within, and pointing towards Jimmy specifically for growing rifts in the band. Once Karac died, Robert's priorities shifted away from the band, but not enough to break away entirely. Once his childhood friend Bonham died, Robert's emotional strings to the band were cut. He was loyal to Bonzo, and not Jimmy - he would never go back. After he established his independence with his solo work, there was NO CHANCE Robert would ever re-form Zep "the band" in any format. He agreed to play with Jimmy in Page/Plant, but Jones was not invited, because he did not want the "Zep" comparisons. He did a few one-off reunions, but has emphatically squashed any talks of Zep tours. Some of that is residual animosity, and not wanting to be under Jimmy's thumb anymore....because fans who understand the dynamics and the personalities of the members know that even though Zep was 4 musical equals, Led Zeppelin was Jimmy's band....period.

      @tektoniks_architects Год назад +2

      That's true. But also remember where they were coming from: Plant and Bonham were 20-year-old unknowns. Page and Jones were veteran session musicians, in their mid-20's, having played on hundreds of tracks. Page was a Rock Star already, having been a Yardbird - a role that already would have earned him a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame before Zeppelin ever existed. Plant and Bonham were outsiders, and friends from early teens. They had a bond that Jimmy and Robert didn't have. Jimmy was the leader of the band. Although they all contributed equally to the music, there was no question it was Jimmy's band.

    I dealt bootlegs in NYC for 15 years ('87-'02). That sunny Saturday afternoon in May, I was 21 years old. I was outside The Garden selling cassettes of sweet soundboards and demo outtakes of all the big names. Then somebody traded me a $250 face value ticket for 50 bucks worth of boots. I happily made the deal, went home to 92nd street to shower and drop off my tape rack and boom box. Then whizzed downtown on the 6 train and entered The Garden at 5 p.m. Ran into my best Zeppelin friend by chance inside and he took me to 17th row on Page's side to see the next 8 hours of great appearances in rapid fire. Oh man, 32 minutes and 5 songs. Know what? It was way louder inside than the HBO levels. Man, lemme tell ya, when we shuffled out of there after 2 in the morning, there was a communal feeling. Everyone was sorta quiet. We'd been satisfied, like we'd all gotten laid. We were quietly looking into our futures, for now we can proclaim - "That's right Junior. One fateful evening in 1988, I, no, WE saw Led Zeppelin in Madison Square Garden." It definitely felt communal afterwards. Zeppelin had kinda united everyone. That's a rare effect after a show.

    I remember when this show went down...I was living in Boston. My girlfriend worked in the hotel industry. Boston, MA had not yet been fully wired for cable television, but major hotels had cable. I called my girlfriend and asked her if the hotels had any vacant rooms, and she told me they did. I went to her hotel, she gave me a room key, and I went up to a vacant room to watch this live on cable. It was a much better performance than Live Aid (which I attended), with some moments that took you back to the old days....but still not completely hitting the mark, like they did at the O2 many years later. @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories The O2 was Jimmy's redemption....it wiped away all the "bad" reunions. And it was much better than anyone could have hoped. But I hope people don't take this the wrong way when I say: even though Jason was BRILLIANT and perhaps the star of this night.....Jason is not his dad. That is not a criticism of Jason.....that is more of a compliment of his dad. NO ONE was John Bonham. Go back and listen to In My Time Of Dying, 1975, Earls Court.....then go listen to IMTOD, at the O2. Listen to the drumming. Jason is fantastic.....but he doesn't drive the song like his dad did. So I think if there was anything that was "autopilot-feeling" about the O2, I think it was about : 1) age factor, and 2) John Bonham's absence. Bonham was so integral to the power of Zep, that John removed takes the band's power down a little, even when Jason is playing spectacularly well.

On the day of the show, myself and three friends flew into NY, rode into Manhattan listening to only the right music for that trip and enjoyed our great seats. Hey JCM, another awesome video my friend... I remember when GNR released Appetite for Destruction, as you say, it was a real game changer back in the day, and it had heavy radio time in my part of the woods. It was a long time that we hadn't heard such raw, catchy rock. Still have this album in my collection.
    On the 1988 reunion when it got into it, I got goosebumps seeing that Led Zep license plate Robert Townsend was holding, and that rendition of Kashmir, despite as you said needed a bit more dirt, sound damned awesome. Jason Bonham would have made his dad proud. Thanks again JCM. Another wonderful recollection of history!

I had plenty of friends who were not into Zeppelin the way I was, and I was hoping they would finally get a glimpse of a live performance to understand what all the fuss was about. I can't imagine the pressure they all must have felt trying to live up to the legacy. Even in 1988, it would have been hard for them to match the energy they had back in the 70s. I believe they redeemed themselves with the 2007 concert -- and I don't blame Robert for wanting to move on. Thank God for recorded music so we can continue to enjoy them in their prime.

This was my second strike out trying to get tickets though I had better chances than '85. But I also had to watch this on HBO I do remembering being puzzled with Kashmir though being a great opener Plant lyric mess ups did confuse me at the time. Jason and Jones were locked in and ready to go but Page like you said was distracted with his guitar tones and yeah Plant really didn't want this or need it as he did a 3 song set earlier in the day. Page was not using a distortion pedal.. His overdrive was natural amp distortion. He would set the amp up for overdriven tone and would rolll down the volume pots on the guitar to get a clean sound and then roll the guitar volume pots back up to get distortion . Here it sounded like he could not get the amp turned up enough to get more saturation compression and sustain . He may not have been able to turn up the Amp without messing up the volume balance with the rest of the band and messing up the mix . What he needed was for the F0H engineer to lower his guitar volume in the FOH mix which would have given Jimmy room to turn his amp up more. The guitar sound in the venue is a mixture of pure guitar amp volume coming off the stage and sound Reinforcement from the PA. It's actually tricky balance
    In the pages tone gets cleaner as the PA systems improve.. in the early years of 69 and 70 when pages guitar tone was more heavy then at any other point during zeppelin career most nights in 69 and 70 he was not even running his guitar through the PA . He was relying 100 percent on pure stage volume which means he had his amps cranked. On the 1971 north American tour he starts running his guitar through the PA every night and continued to do
    So for the rest of zeps line career. His tone in 1971 is slightly less overdriven and a little cleaner sounding . It's not as honky and does not has as much squish or compression but it is only slightly less overdrivem an this is due the amps not being turned up as loud due to the use of PA reinforcement as the PAs got better with each tour page could rely on them more and more to carry a larger portion of the guitar volume for the venue which enabled page to work with lower amp volume and thus a cleaner sound .

    Been busy but finally got to sit doen and watch this one. First 🙏🙏🙏 much respect for giving Steven Adler his do. Many don't get how strong his contributions to GnR were!
    Now to this, much of how you analyze this period and the Zeppelin performances is spot on! I have to say they got better when Page was involved. I always have felt Plant was always holding Jimmy at bay. Wanting total control, never wanting a Zeppelin reunion tour because he would have to play nice and as a unit. Always felt not having Jonsey involved was extremely disrespectful. Robert imo wanted the glory of of doing yhe Zeppelin stuff but didn't want to share the spotlight.

      Hey John! Hope you are doing well! Yes, it feels Robert was holding Jimmy at bay 100%. The 90s rub me the wrong way because of Jones not being involved, disrespectul and let's be honest, he was left out of a lot of cash he has a right to...it's a never-ending puzzle right? And yeah, Steven Adler is a beast, you know not trashing Sorum but his drumming for me is never as explosive as Adler, Steve LIVED the songs he played, like an Artist! I think the crap he gets for addiction is just too much, at least he accepts it not like other rockers you and me know! Thank you for watching! Stay tuned for Episode 14 premieres this Saturday February 4th!

      @@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories anxiously awaiting! Your right about Matt, not that he's not a good drummer but he was,what he was a hired hand. Same goes for the guy they have now. As far as addiction, hypocrites all of them but I think at this point Slash is only in it now to cash in. Axl seems to be his same old manic self as it is taking forever to release news music that's been coming for well over a year now.
      To your point about Jonesy, a total slap in the face! He was probably more important to Zeppelin as Robert! Robert for me as much as I love him is the poster boy for LSD (Lead singer disease). No disrespect intended but looking back it seems Robert was pushing for control or more control of Zeppelin. Imo that is his reason for saying he's had enough of Zeppelin. For me Jimmy was the genius of the band with Jonesy being his right hand. That's as far as orchestration and production and even some promotion. Even Peter Grant plays a bigger part in the bands success than dose Robert. Robert was the vocalist, love it, respect it but his contribution ends there because lyrically he was hit or miss. As mamouth as Stairway was for me it is the instrumental journey that stands out. So I agree with Robert it could had been deeper lyrically. For me the Rain Song is probably the most beautiful song they ever did! There are other like Achilles and Casrouselambra were far better compositions than Stairway but that's me. I still love it, it was my wedding march but far from my favorite Zeppelin song. Then again I don't have a favorite!

    One thing that also ruins Kashmir and Stairway is Jonesy’s keyboard isn’t fed through because the radio broadcast used his line instead. It causes the songs to be thin and weak. Odd for monoliths like Kashmir and Stairway.
    I will say that this a 50-60 percent effort overall. Plant seems detached and comes off as boorish instead of funny and cool. Page feels a pressure to carry the set as a result, causing him to freeze up. Jason and Jonesy (when you can hear him) are spot and enthusiastic.
    It’s a disappointing set no doubt but no train crash. More of a car wreck everyone walks away from. In any event, it’s overpowered by what happened in 2007 at the O2, a triumphant set which we will learn much more about, I’m sure.

    Robert actually sang Kashmir like that quite often changing the verses around, with another example being Trampled Underfoot. Also if you find a copy of the AUD recording of the 88 reunion it comes across much better than the tv audio feed and a lot better than the Live Aid 1985 reunion, for some reason Plant's vocals and Page's guitar come across very dry and it's a shame considering Jimmy's playing and tone that year on the Outrider tour was pretty great.

    "Despite his hatred for Stairway, Robert delivers a good version like a consummate professional. The look on his face is of someone trying to get along with toxic coworkers at the office -- keep a straight face, don't take it personal and remember laughter. Plant almost didn't throw the "does anyone remember laughter" line, but went for it. What a good team player Robert Plant was, showing good leadership potential and passion for winning. Corporate America would be proud. Everyone has Starway to Heaven 1988 moments in life. From family reunions to government policies. We have to do some things so we can do the things we want. We're not talking about suppressing emotions but flowing when life needs you to do so. This song is a metaphoric representation; a never-ending battle of the case of the Mondays and the quest for a Friday. Cheers to all of you who don't really want to sing your personal Stairway to Heaven but you do it anyway with grace and you bring yourself one step closer to your dream through sacrifice, gratitude and rock n' roll."
