Andy, this is my favorite video you have ever done. I'm a jazz fan, but we all need Zeppelin in our lives, and you've managed to passionately explain the songs of the greatest band ever. Thank you!
I remember visiting a friend at her parents' house in a mid-sized American town (Spokane, WA) in the 1980s. We were sitting in the living room when we heard the sounds of the family's youngest child, a teenage boy, practicing his guitar in his basement bedroom. The unmistakeable acoustic guitar intro came wafting up the stairs, and it was like an epiphany. I said, "I am experiencing an archetypal moment in the late 20th Century Western culture, occupying a suburban house where a teenager is playing THAT SONG!" So it's totally appropriate that you should overlook it -- it's just part of the air we breathe. It's like the water your goldfish swim in. We forget it's even there... but it's ALWAYS THERE! I can't say I grew up with Led Zeppelin because I was born in the late 1950s and most of my friends considered them to be sort of the kind of band our little brothers listened to. We were much, much more "sophisticated," of course -- listening to folk rock and singer-songwriters. So, I didn't really get into Led Zeppelin (I'm sorry, I just can't bring myself to write "Led Zep") until I was in my 30s. Although, when I was 15, I did babysit for a young couple who had "II" and "Houses of the Holy" and listening to them on headphones blew my mind.

I love your monologue. The way you rank songs and base albums on amount of songs from each one. Love it. Gonna try my own see how it turns out compared to yours
Thoroughly enjoyable video, made better via the personal connection, but also the pervading sense of the geographical connection through yourself, two of the members and on through the influence of Tolkien even if it had been merely indirect and unconscious. I’ve never claimed to be Zep’s biggest fan,( and can occasionally feel animated to push back when I feel fans are exaggerating their brilliance), …… BUT …. when I first heard The Song Remains The Same when around 12-13 years old, and had just started playing, I did have my musical mind blown and I still to this day involuntarily hear the songs from that album ‘as I did back then’ and they still represent something that to me is way beyond mere hard rock. After hearing those tracks ‘first’ with their brilliant live arrangements and killa playing, the studio versions would forever pale in comparison and possibly tainted my personal appreciation of the band. That said, this vid has inspired me to revisit their catalogue once again.

It would have to be a fairly long list (I'd guess at least 500 songs . . . maybe 1000?), but I wonder how many slots Led Zeppelin would take?
Definitely one of your greatest rants, Andy (you should think about ranking the rants sometime). However you arrived at the album rankings, it's pretty close to how I see things, though for me it's III, IV, II, and I. Now, there are great tracks on the remaining albums, but... Well, maybe it was all that smack Jimmy, but the flame started to flicker with HOTH. Now ITTOD I could have done without entirely...
For me I woul d pick Physical Graffiti as the #1 album and Houses of the Holy as my#2. As far as Stairway To Heaven, I could care less if I ever hear it again! Great video Andy! 50:37
When playing les zep songs and especially lz4, when you listen to each song you are entering another world. I can't think of any other band that could do this change from song to song to song.
I second the Eddie Cochran idea. All those early Rock and roll artists are so vital to everything else. I mean if you can’t play Chuck Berry and Bo Diddly you can’t play rock. Great video Andy. I love waffles btw.
@@bfish89ryuhayabusa yeah if you go further back to the Delmore Brothers “Freight Train Boogie” from 1947. You can hear that swing and a little back beat. But really I think Rock and Roll is a spirit.
Did I write this comment before? It's the one where I tell the story about when I saw Led Zeppelin, this was 1969, John Bonham was so high, well that's what I assumed, that he literally passed out at the drum kit. Performance art, that was. But before that epic event, Jimmy Page bowed his guitar with a violin bow. Never before had I seen anything like that! Keep in mind I was 15 years old, but still. Nice ranking of the songs, Andy. I got so tired of Stairway to Heaven, I swore off listening to Led Zeppelin ever again.
There was no more EPICALLY STUNNING concert opening (or experience for that matter) that I ever witnessed than that of Zep kicking off with Immigrant Song and then immediately going into Heartbreaker (1972 tour...refer to How The West Was Won). I was like the guy in that 1970's BOSE speaker magazine ad where the guy is sitting in his easy chair in the living room holding onto the arm rest for dear life as his hair is being blown back. After that 10-12 minute sequence I was never the same again. It was literally the only religious experience I ever had. (BTW, I didn't know ANY of their songs except Whole Lotta Love AM version at the time I attended this show).
So happy to see 3 tracks from Presence. It was the first album I ever bought and it remains my favourite album of my favourite band. Tea For One is immense. My second favourite was Physical Graffiti, so In The Light is a welcome addition. But Ten Years Gone nearly makes me cry with it's beauty. Good list though!
I'm thinking of watching this vid. Its my fav channel so why not. I suppose it couldn't hurt. I mean ive been a massive led zep fan since i was a teen. Its just ..its just such an obvious vid to make. Surprised you haven't made it sooner.
10 Underrated Zep Songs (that are Not Covers): #1) “Achilles Last Stand” (1976) #2) “Ten Years Gone” (1975) #3) “The Rain Song” (1973) #4) “The Rover” (1975) #5) “The Battle of Evermore” (1971) #6) “What Is and What Should Never Be” (1969) #7) “For Your Life” (1976) #8) “Out on the Tiles” (1970) #9) “Four Sticks” (1971) #10) “In the Light” (1975)
Outstanding work, as always, Captain Andy; I was wondering (hoping) if you might find some love for The Rover from Physical Graffiti (might be my favorite Zep song - there's something about it). As for you talking too much - I think your response to that as a general consideration was spot on. It is your passion that saves the day (which is absolutely as it should be). If we can't share a laugh, then what, indeed, does it all mean... 15 points for the Captain!
I saw Led Zeppelin's first gig at the Marquee in '68 (?). I think they had played two gig's there previously but as 'The New Yardbirds'. Wish I still had the photos I took. Phukin' good gig btw! 🙂
Yes, I liked it and I'm subscribed. I very much enjoy your approach, keep up the good work! btw - whatever happened to The Rover? Killer drum intro, fabulous main riff, fabulous following chord sequence, great use of just enough guitar effects, awesome plaintative vocals and lyrics by Robert, and... Jimmy's most underrated solo (and maybe the most underrated in all of classic rock). Incredible phrasing and space placement, just a touch of flash, uses a huge part of the fretboard. I readily agreed with your list as a whole, but for me the The Rover would knock the vast majority of those songs out of their spot. "If we could just join hands.. that's all it takes. That's all it takes."
As always, seeing other's choices are interesting and revealing. Despite the fact that we are both veteran Led Zeppelin fans and mostly see things in a similar vein, it is the differences that say the most. My top Ten Led Zeppelin songs; 10) 'No Quarter' (LIVE version), 9) 'The Song Remains the Same (LIVE version again), 8) Kashmir, 7) 'Over the Hills and Far Away', 6) 'Whole Lotta Love', 5) 'Dazed and Confused' (LIVE version again), 4) 'Achilles Last Stand' (Knebworth LIVE version), 3) 'Since I've been Loving You' (LIVE version again), 2) 'When the Levee breaks', 1) 'Immigrant Song' (LIVE version again). The biggest difference is my preference for many of the best live versions. I saw them at Knebworth 1979, it was breathtakingly better than expected!
Houses .... is my favorite record they made : The song ... , Over the hills ...., No Quarter, The Ocean, ... dancing days ....what a collection, btw your singing immitations are not bad, Robert's harmonica playing is awesum, ... rocky, bluesy as on "Nobodies fault ..." Billie Jean King .. ? used an item that does remind you of a guitar but is called a tennis racket 😆 ... good list ... I would add "Over the hills ...", and "Out on the tiles" and"Custard Pie" "Bring it back home" ... I actually knew from the beginning it would be hard to boil down LZ to only 30 songs, actually impossible
Agree with some others that ten years gone is excellent and would be in my top ten alongside the Rover, both from their best album although the forth side is perhaps its achilles heal.
So hard to pare it down to 30. We shared 19 songs...at least 6 of the songs you had, could just have easily been on my list (Black Dog, No Quarter, Celebration Day, Heartbreaker, The Ocean and All My Love). I can't really put these songs in any kind of order. But here's my top 12 chronologically: 1) How Many More Times 2) Immigrant Song 3) Rock And Roll 4) Misty Mountain Hop 5) When The Levee Breaks 6) The Song Remains The Same (probably my favorite) 7) The Rain Song 8) In My Time Of Dying 9) Kashmir 10) In The Light 11) Ten Years Gone 12) Achilles Last Stand Here's 13-30 (chronologically) 13) Good Times Bad Times 14) Whole Lotta Love 15) What Is And What Should Never Be 16) Ramble On 17) Tangerine 18) That's The Way 19) Battle Of Evermore 20) Stairway To Heaven 21) Going To California 22) Over The Hills And Far Away 23) Trampled Underfoot 24) Houses Of The Holy 25) Down By The Seaside 26) The Rover 27) Nobody's Fault But Mine 28) In The Evening 29) Carouselambra 30) Ozone Baby
Speaking of "Immigrant Song," Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's soundtrack for the movie "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" opens with an amazing version of "Immigrant song" sung by Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's fierce and loud and, for me at least, the first time I heard it, jaw dropping.
The opening drum beat of Rock and Roll is from Little Richard - Keep a Knockin', drummed by Chuck Connors. Fleetwood Mac did it on their live album Live in Boston and various album reissues under adifferent title
Yes, it is well documented that the song came out of a jam session Led Zeppelin were having when they were playing rock and roll standards. Bonham played that drum intro and they took off from that.

I like your top tens, even if I disagree with them, very entertaining
10 Underrated Zep Songs
(that are Not Covers):
#1) “Achilles Last Stand” (1976)
#2) “Ten Years Gone” (1975)
#3) “The Rain Song” (1973)
#4) “The Rover” (1975)
#5) “The Battle of Evermore” (1971)
#6) “What Is and What Should Never Be” (1969)
#7) “For Your Life” (1976)
#8) “Out on the Tiles” (1970)
#9) “Four Sticks” (1971)
#10) “In the Light” (1975)
I think "For Your Life" contains one of Pagey's best ever solo's but it's never mentioned in any lists I've ever seen.
Achilles Last Stand is Jimmy Page's favourite Zeppelin song (and probably mine, for what little that's worth).
@@Gonzoweb69For your life is my favorite Zep song Great Power chords, solo , its got many different tempos.
Really good Andy that should increase your fan base😃
Genius scoring system.
i so enjoyed your video
can t wait for the next one
Outstanding work, as always, Captain Andy; I was wondering (hoping) if you might find some love for The Rover from Physical Graffiti (might be my favorite Zep song - there's something about it). As for you talking too much - I think your response to that as a general consideration was spot on. It is your passion that saves the day (which is absolutely as it should be). If we can't share a laugh, then what, indeed, does it all mean... 15 points for the Captain!
I love The Rover and Custard Pie. Side One is the best side IMO on PG. Thanks for the kind comments
Thank you sounds amazing of diff live bootleg versions.
I saw Led Zeppelin's first gig at the Marquee in '68 (?). I think they had played two gig's there previously but as 'The New Yardbirds'. Wish I still had the photos I took. Phukin' good gig btw! 🙂
Saw them in Chicago at the kinetic playground when the second album came out, they were wasted😅
@@paulmartinson875 I seem to remember that _just_ got back from the USA before that Marquee gig.
Just loved this one Andy....great job!
Ever watchable Andy, ramble on!
Fun video mate, my personal favourites are Over the hills and far away and The Rover 🤷🏻♂️😁
Just subscribed and I love how you ended your top 30😆
I like to hear your rambling about the reasons you like particular songs/albums. I would donate money to you to buy some waffles.
Awk kra chu taking yav plue and also well said sir. Your channel is objectively plutt.
So hard to pare it down to 30. We shared 19 songs...at least 6 of the songs you had, could just have easily been on my list (Black Dog, No Quarter, Celebration Day, Heartbreaker, The Ocean and All My Love).
I can't really put these songs in any kind of order. But here's my top 12 chronologically:
1) How Many More Times
2) Immigrant Song
3) Rock And Roll
4) Misty Mountain Hop
5) When The Levee Breaks
6) The Song Remains The Same (probably my favorite)
7) The Rain Song
8) In My Time Of Dying
9) Kashmir
10) In The Light
11) Ten Years Gone
12) Achilles Last Stand
Here's 13-30 (chronologically)
13) Good Times Bad Times
14) Whole Lotta Love
15) What Is And What Should Never Be
16) Ramble On
17) Tangerine
18) That's The Way
19) Battle Of Evermore
20) Stairway To Heaven
21) Going To California
22) Over The Hills And Far Away
23) Trampled Underfoot
24) Houses Of The Holy
25) Down By The Seaside
26) The Rover
27) Nobody's Fault But Mine
28) In The Evening
29) Carouselambra
30) Ozone Baby
Hi Andy just discovered your channel, absolutely loved this video and I loved the waffle 🙂
Love your #1 and the song that shall not be named in its own Platonic category😂
All the Kings Horses and all the Kings men! That's what you were aiming for!
The album rankings were very fair.
Love the list. Stairway no.1 of course. But I thought What is and what should never be might get a look in.
30:18 Keep a Kockin’ by Little Richard, lol
Fab video, Andy.
Hot Dog is in all seriousness one of my Led Zep favourites. Maybe I should sling my hook!
it is very silly but one of the more exciting tunes on that album. But it silly. In The Evening and Carouselambra are a bit tedious IMO
Thanks Andy, just here for the education so the tutorial or waffle is an elucidation
Thanks Andy ⚡️
Speaking of "Immigrant Song," Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross's soundtrack for the movie "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" opens with an amazing version of "Immigrant song" sung by Karen O of Yeah Yeah Yeahs. It's fierce and loud and, for me at least, the first time I heard it, jaw dropping.
Your videos are so educational and FUN!
Glad you like them!
Not really. Andy is a moron's ideal of what a bright fellow is. King of the Knobs, is our Andy.
