@@NormBoyle ~ Thanks for watching and commenting, Mr. Boyle! I think one of my esteemed colleagues would totally agree with you.
No matter what our individual personal favourites are, at least we all agree on what a wonderful band they are! New music from them due at the end of this week, too! Allegedly. Slainte Mhath! 🍻

Davey, always enjoy your shows. Great discussions. They're also very therapeutic with my Ravens just losing to the hated Steelers.
This one is a particular favorite as IQ is a top 5 favorite bands of mine. Mike Holmes is probably in my top 3 of favorite guitarists. They way he puts together a solo is simply incredible. So many hair-raising moments over the catalog.
I lean towards your top11 compared to Todd's who likes the more recent output. I think it's a Neil thing vs Widge for me. I just have not connected with the keyboard sounds/passages from Neil (I also wrote messages to his It All Posts Here so Neil is a cool guy).
    Anyways:
#11 Nomzamo - I know you like this much higher but a bit too poppy for me on some of the tracks. Proggy tunes like HM and CG are very good
#10 - Are You Sitting Comfortably? A bit better than Nomzamo since the pop songs are better. Wurensh is great.. its an anagram for New Rush with Terry Brown.
#9 - Resistance - other than a few excellent tunes - Missle and certain sections - For another lifetime ending - WOW...., just not connecting with me. Only a 7.5 for me.
The rest of these are 8.5 and better for me
#8 - Road of Bones - I know that a lot of people love this one, but again some lack of connection with the tunes. I listen to this in editted sections.. my ADHD prog issue
#7 Dark Matter - Sacred Sound is incredible. Like most of the epic but there are sections that I find a little too derivative. Again these are minor quibbles. As you guys mentioned, any IQ is better than 90% of music you'll hear.
#6 7th House - Dig it alot, but it's not as great as other ones. The title track guitar solo ends too short during one of the trademark IQ majestic endings which frustrates me a lot. Sorry Todd disagree on these frustrating fade outs. The live versions don't have them and are so much better. Like Guiding Light a lot.. sorta a sequel to Leap of Faith, just not as quite as good.
#5 Frequency - Just awesome tunes. Title track kicks ass. Providence. Stronger than Fricition.Even though Widge is my favorite, I really like Mark Westworth's output on this disc. I saw Mark live in Baltimore with Grey Lady Down years ago and I knew he was a great choice to replace Martin. Too bad he only stayed one album.
#4 Ever. Their beautiful album. Just simply beautiful musically. The Darkest Hour is top 5 tune. Leap of Faith is incredible. Came down is best reflective last song on an album ever (excuse the pun)
#3 Tales from the Lush Attic - Sonically not the best, obviously, but the 3 epics are incredible. Last Human Gateway is my favorite IQ song period.. That epic ending is my favorite IQ moment. This is my first IQ disc.. bought it at a show and listened to it on repeat while watching the Bills Oilers playoff game where the Bills came back to win. Very strong memory so it has a huge sweet spot.
#2 Subterranean- Yes Sub is better than the Lamb from Genesis or any other 2 disc prog concept album for me...although.. Holy shit am I loving Frost* Life in The Wires... The song Part 2 might be best song since Headlong for me. Back on topic.. not much to say other than it is almost flawless. The Mike Holmes solos on the album are incredible.. probably his best. Like you said ending of Failsafe. Goosebumps. Narrow Margin- incredible. I befriended John and met the whole band in Quebec City to see them play Sub 2 nights. Really cool guys.
#1 Wake - Don't know why #1.. just love every tune including Corners. The 80s vibe kinda puts it over Sub for me even though I probably like Sub compositional a little better. The Wake has this pseudo punk vibe to it thatvI love even though I do really like punk music much. Its varied, spacey, poppy, proggy.. has it all.. and the Pete vocals are charming with lack of polish. Headlong, Outer Limits, 1000 days, Widows Peak, Magic Roundabout... Awesome tunes!!
Hey I probably met you guys at these shows. I was at the IQ lunch during Nearfest so probably bumped into Todd. Anyways thanks for sharing the great show with Bicyclelegs and Todd!

@@ravensnhokies ~ Holy smokes, WHAT a response! Thanks for commenting and watching, l appreciate it. I love your in-depth analysis of each album and you make some extremely valid points.
Todd said IQ are his favourite band and bicyclelegs is a HUGE fan as well. I neglected to mention that IQ - and Threshold - are my most listened to acts over the last 30 years! (Well, only past 23 years for Threshold. But I love them, too!)
I’m going to have to reread your comment again, so l can absorb it better.
This crew will be back for more shows in 2025: maybe our favourite IQ songs, or perhaps ranking another prog-rock catalog.
Coming in 2025: album rankings of Shadow Gallery with Jack Toledano (All or Nada According to Jack, Sea of Tranquility); Ice Age; Threshold (w/ hopefully a very special guest!); Iluvatar; Rush; Marillion and many more! So stay tuned! Slainte Mhath! 🍻

You guys should do a show on Jadis. They just put out a new album earlier this year and Martin Orford is back on keys, flute, backing vocals & apparently he did a lot of writing on it, too. I know the word "underrated" gets thrown around a lot, but in Jadis case it really fits. They just seem to always be flying under the radar in the prog world and most people don't even seem to know they are still around making new music. Gary Chandler's guitar work is very distinctive and unique IMO, and I've always been surprised that he's never gotten more attention when people discuss prog guitarists.

@@soundsandvisionsHQ ~ l was actually correct. This Menel era IQ is the outdoor show in the rain I’ve seen before. I have it on now. Paulie introduced “Sold On You” as their forthcoming single - in a few months - from their next album! Doing two new songs for a festival crowd is an odd setlist choice. Five songs in and no Nicholls tunes so far.
I’d have to play catch up on the last few Jadis releases. Im not sure where my compadres stand on Jadis, I’ll have to ask them.
I have a lot of Prog content coming up in 2025 that l listed in another comment. Acts like Arena, Ice Age, Iluvatar, Marillion, Rush, The Velour Shingle, etc.
Hey! Song six is “The Wake!”

@@daveycretin664 Great to hear you've got more prog shows coming. Now subbed to the channel. I'm a fan of Arena, but not as familiar with Ice Age or Iluvatar. And Marillion is an all-time favorite, top 3 band for me, but with a very, very heavy preference for the Hogarth decades, 1989 and onwards, right up to today. I almost think of "Seasons End" as their debut album, though I know, of course, that's not historically correct. lol. Another band I'm heavily into now is Mostly Autumn. Though I was late to the party in discovering their music, they are currently the band I've been listening to more often than any other in 2024. Still discovering the whole catalog, with "Sight of Day", "Ghost Moon Orchestra" & "Dressed in Voices" being among the most played albums.

@@daveycretin664 As for the I.Q. setlist of that RUclips show - knowing that they were playing a festival where it was very likely a lot of the audience was not going to know who I.Q. were, trying to get the audience interested in the next album was probably a good move. According to the video description this was a fest where the headliners were Jethro Tull, Foreigner and Starship, so maybe they would have done more of previous albums had it been a more prog-oriented festival.

The title "Wurensh" is not a real word but an anagram for "New Rush". While it was first being written someone in the band, I believe Menel, said it sounded like a new Rush song. So that became a working title that they just left as is rather than change it. And this would have been towards the end of Rush's "synth period", when they, like IQ, were criticized by some for going after a more commercial sound (I never bought into that thinking myself and love Rush's synth period as very creative). Also, it's now largely forgotten that during the Paul Menel/"Are You Sitting Comfortably" era, Squawk Records set them up on a tour opening for Mike & The Mechanics, which seems to be the kind of audience that the label wanted I.Q. to appeal to. Unfortunately they got a somewhat lukewarm reception from The Mechanics audience, which helped only to give I.Q. a lesser-standing with the label, and they were soon dropped - though the label's financial troubles have also been sited...During the Menel period I was a member of the International I.Q. fan club - and their newsletters are where I read this info. I still have all my old fan club mags in good condition. The last newsletter I received bore the headline "I.Q. silenced after a long Squawk". They were not shy about taking minor jabs at the label in their newsletters. I just let my membership run out after that. The band's future seemed too uncertain at that moment. And yes, I liked the Menel period, though I think they've gotten in better in recent decades, with "Dark Matter" & "Frequency" being favorites.

@@soundsandvisionsHQ ~ Thanks for commenting and watching, I greatly appreciate it. Someone else mentioned the same exact thing about “Wurensh” standing for “New Rush.” Except, he said it was producer Terry Brown’s idea. Whoever came up with it, it’s pretty cool to find that out all these years later!
I really love the whole IQ catalog. I’m glad that so many others feel the same way about them as Todd, bicyclelegs and I do. Cheers! 🥂

@@daveycretin664 I'll have to get out the old fan club newsletters and see exactly who it credits for the "New Rush" anagram. What's interesting about the newsletters is that they cover that whole space of time from right after "Nomzamo" was out in stores and the (then) new I.Q. was born, right through to their being dropped by Squawk and Menel & Time Esau leaving the band. So the fan club stuff is like a complete time capsule of that era of the band and full of fascinating tidbits. If you want to see something interesting from this period of the band and what it was like, there is a 40 min. pro-shot concert here on RUclips, though the sound quality is not that great. It can be found under the title "Paul Menel-era IQ, live in Germany c.1988".
