Not a band, but the most overrated artist of all time has got to be Beyonce. The press treats her as the ultimate sacred cow, the most important artist of our era. Completely run of the mill commercial r&b with a shrill, unappealing voice and not even the charisma that you would expect from a major pop star. I just genuinely don't get why anyone rates her at all.

@@chriscoughlin9289XTC debuted in the late 70s. Oasis debuted in 94. Do you really view them as contemporaries? Btw XTC is genius, but Oasis wrote simple rock/pop anthems that now make for good 90s nostalgia. I don't see, where the problem is and why people have to snobbishly prove their inferiority on every corner by bringing up totally unrelated postpunk/new wave/art rock geniuses? The thing with Oasis is, Noel could get a tune out of very basic chord progressions, which is actually an underrated talent, and Liam looked cool in a parka, also they were funny in a stupid reality tv kinda way. The problem with XTC is, that Andy sounds like a barking seal and doesn't look cool in a parka (Maybe Colin could have pulled off a parka though). Again, XTC are total genius and they're criminally underrated, I agree on that, but why the need to compare?

I had to prepare myself for Oasis, which I knew was coming at number 1. I LOVED Oasis when they came on the scene. Their debut album 'Definitely Maybe' was such a slap in the face, it was totally unlike anything else you could hear at the time, in sound, attitude. It's hard to appreciate what they represented for a lot of people at the time. It's an incredible album. Now are they overrated? Yes they are. By the second album 'What's the Story Morning Glory' (which had all the hits and made them one of the biggest bands in the world, if only for a short time), I was still very much a fan, but I started to see the other side, the boring self-indulgent side, the caricature of themselves. It's well documented that with the second album Noel had planned for a calculated shift towards more commercial songs, a much more sellable sound (far from the punk influence from the fist album,) which worked even better than expected in terms of commercial success. It's not often mentioned how much the band changed from the first to the second album. And it became completely apparent in the 3rd album which was a big let down (other people started to see it), and I lost interest from there. They had many other albums and maintained a decent level of success for so many years while being totally uninspired, so yeah they are overrated. But the first album alone keeps them at a special place for me.

Because of this, I think they'll still be remembered. Lord and Paice maybe go under the radar but Ian Gillan, David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore are constantly praised and talked about. Glenn Hughes too, although also for his work with other bands.

U2 early career, shouldnt be wiped out by the later day, impotent music that many, including myself, find boring and without any spark. The albums Boy, October, War, The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby are filled with Edge's ethereal, majestic guitar tones and effects, brimming over with inventive melodies and harmonies. Beautiful stuff, and with Bono's rare vocal ability riding over the top (Bono sounds better live, incredibly so!) you have music that simply captivates. Then again, i have to wonder how many folks have heard these full albums - deep cuts are even better than the hits!

They're really not a great band - they just happened to have a sound that managed to possess a few trending-at-the-time attributes, and managed to squeeze a hit or few out of it. However, there's no real depth to their catalog, no musicianship, songwriting or lyricism to marvel, neither a broad selection of "bangers" (appealing hits) nor artistically significant or impressive deep cuts etc.

Anybody who rates Prince definitely wasn't at any of the 3 concerts he did at Wembley Arena in August 1986.
I was at the second one, on the third row from the stage, dead centre and it put me off him for life.
I was offered hundreds of pounds for my ticket by several different people outside the venue, when hundreds of pounds was a lot of money
and my fiancee who attended the gig with me said she'd break up with me if I took the money.
The concert was probably the worst one I've ever seen by some distance.
Needless to say, after the show during the 200 mile plus journey back home, not a single word was said,
though I know she thought, just like I did, WHY DIDN'T WE TAKE THE MONEY.

      @andremcpherson1424 3 месяца назад +15

      @@AndyEdwardsDrummer
Wow, Hi Andy, I'm deeply honoured you've replied personally.
Thank you for taking the time.
Okay, so it wasn't really a very long show, he came on stage late,
but the thing that really ruined it for me personally and probably for most of the audience too
was that the only song he performed in it's entirety was Purple Rain at the very end.
Other than that, it was one verse and a chorus here of one song and one verse and a chorus there of another song
and that's the way it played out all evening.
He even performed a version of 'How Much Is That Doggie In The Window!' Seriously, he did, very strange!
      It was all very rushed.
      At the time, August 1986,
Seeing as M.J. was busy doing his Bad album, Prince was arguably the biggest - can I say - pop star, in the world?
Purple Rain had happened and Parade was his current album,
the single 'Girls And Boys' being released to coincide with the shows.
The three shows had certainly been hastily arranged, almost as an after thought.
A mere 4 weeks before the three gigs, there was an article in a national tabloid newspaper announcing the shows
with the date and time the tickets were going on sale.
I'm from the North West of England,
had just passed my driving test at the time and drove down to Wembley alone in the early hours to ensure I got tickets,
this was my first ever long driving journey.
Around the Northampton area I started experiencing extreme driver fatigue and in not knowing the rules,
I pulled over on the hard shoulder of the M1 for a sleep.
I was awoken by an officer of the law a short time later and was prosecuted for the offence.
When I arrived at the Wembley Arena around 4.30am the queue for the box office was already quite long.
By the time the box office opened at 10am, the queue was right around the whole arena,
such was the demand for tickets.
Only 4 tickets per person were allowed to be purchased.
This was the first time Prince had come to perform in the UK since he publicly proclaimed he would never play in this country again
following the scathing reviews his 'Dirty Mind' concerts received in London (Dominion?) a few years before,
so anticipation was off the scale, yet during the concert, you could tell he just didn't want to be there, it was just so apparent.
Maybe those bad reviews from a few years before were still on his mind?
The house lights went down, there was a huge deafening roar from the crowd,
he stated to the audience: "I'm Prince and I've come to play with you!"
The title track from Around The World In A Day started up, the curtains opened and for me,
it was all down hill from there.
Maybe we were unlucky, I know great artists have bad gigs,
but boy was he off that night.
All in all, just a massive anti climax, I just didn't feel it and I know I wasn't alone.
After that, I didn't bother following him anymore.

You are so right about most every band you name. But I had to catch up on the bloke who so got it so wrong about Pink Floyd. Yes I have a bias and love them, but beyond that, its ludicrous saying they are "overrated". Basing your rating on how long they took to find their mature sound is just weird. Every good band started out sounding more naive when they were starting. The Beatles included Yes also sounded quite elementary on their first albums. The fact that Pink Floyd had 3 great full albums should be enough. The fact that they are so unique in their creativity should also hold weight. they didn't even borrow any sound like Led Zep did with blues. It was totally their own creation. I agree btw about The Wall. But the DSOTM, WYWH, and A albums were masterpieces. Then include many songs that stand on their own from other albums. Comfortably Numb (The Wall), or Echos from Meddle. And others from other albums They simply were and still are (which is a clue) a great band. Not over rated or under rated. In fact they never got their due when they were in their prime so any praise now is catching up.

You either ACDC things or find a new path. They picked a new path and it pissed people off. Probably the same ones that are pissed at ACDC. Bruce is many levels better than Bon Jovi as a song writer and a performer. A few of his later songs strike me. He isn't over-rated but rather over exposed maybe for what his songs mean. I don't listen to any of these anymore. Cheers.

I've never got Bruce, I love Dylan and don't need a blue collar version, although I appreciate he means a lot to some people and his lyrics do have a doomed romance about them. People saying Primce absolutely baffles me. I first became aware of him with When Doves Cry came out. Opens with an incendiary guitar break, then the rest of it is so sparse, yet funky. Then the brilliant Sign O' The Times and immediately went and bought the album. People say you have to see Springsteen and Prince live to really get them. I finally got to see Prince at the Hop Farm in 2011. Unbelievably it was originally a two day festival with Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Stooges, Eagles so already a stellar line up so I'd already bought my ticket before the sunday was added. I think the amount of money Vince Power the promoter spunked to get Prince nearly bankrupted him. But boy was it worth it. Hands down the best live performances I've ever seen. He came out and he started soundchecking while his (all female) band vamped through We Live 2 Get Funky. Shouting out instructions to the sound towers. Then he launched into Let's Go Crazy and didn't let up for nearly three hours. It was absolutely stunning, the ultimate showman. He ended the set proper with Purple Rain and then vame out for three encores which became mini sets in themselves ending the first one with a monstrously funky Play That Funky Music. For the 2nd encore he brought on Larry Graham who'd played earlier in the day. They did Everyday People, Come Together and a riotous Want To Take You Higher. By now I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. What a gig, I felt privileged to witness it. Concerning the Chilli Peppers, I love some songs. That intro that winds up to the guitar break on Can't Stop gets me everytime If you can't get into that I'd check your funky bone..

Kraftwerk, sure they're influential, but they suffer from the dreaded masterpiece syndrome. After their last 80s album, electric cafe, released in 1986, it took 17 years for the follow up, tour de France, released in 2003. And so far it's a 21 year wait for their next magnum opus, which is either a work in progress or non-existent cause they're content to live off their hip-hop & house music sample royalties. Zappa dead for the last 30 years has released more albums than he did in his lifetime. Yes a dead composer has a far greater work ethic than Kraftwerk, who should've just broken up in the 80s. Still a legend & influential, but way too lazy to be considered prolific.
