Love em' both, for totally different reasons! As for The Stones, some folks just don't get into blues influenced music, or really, just can't get a feel for blues music. Early U2 is exotic, always inventive music, majestic guitar tones and highly melodic hooks and riffs coming from The Edge. Yeah, tired of "the hits" but it's the deep cuts from those first five or six U2 albums that continue to impress, moody and mysterious, beautiful and with Bono's world class vocals.......magical.
Hello there! There's a U2 backlash going on, and I believe it's mainly due to listener fatigue (how many more times do we need to hear Sunday Bloody Sunday or Where The Streets Have No Name!) Also, their last three or four albums are low on interesting musical ideas and lack spark and creativity. That said, I will defend their first 15 years of music as absolutely stellar, entire albums loaded with gorgeous guitar tones, strikingly inventive melodies and lyrics filled with poetic, deeply felt emotion. Add Bono's stellar vocals to all this and those are the reasons U2 are among the giants of rock music. Forget about the overplayed hits, check out Drowning Man, Wire, Red Hill Mining Town....bloody marvelous, and there's dozens more from those early albums. P.S. Stones catalog is seriously awe inspiring, they are the gift that keeps on giving - new album is FIRE! Take care. @@arzabael
I saw a musicologist describe before and after the Beatles--he was an older man and the interview was in the late 60s or early 70s. His analysis of the Beatles was really well capsulized in this one quotation: "Before The Beatles, pop/rock and roll music was essentially just ritualistic dance music. After the Beatles, it was art." Yup.
this is an apt assessment to be sure, and, there's nothing wrong with ritualistic dance music for anyone getting ruffled. Humans need to come together and dance, and we're losing that too now to our detriment...

It's a really proggy piece, and an outlier in their body of work. I love all their songs. They're mostly more similar to Hotel California than Journey of the Sorcerer.

Even a sophisticated country like Japan didn't start counting record sales until 1989 - imagine how many "verified" sales the Beatles missed out on there. Things get even more crazy now that they count RUclips & Spotify views. It's interesting to look at ranking lists, but I think we can only really compare bands that were subject to the same rules.

Space capsule this is rock n roll nothing better shit there. And that distinction between rnr and rock is important. Music lost some funk and soul when it lost the roll. And you can be all holy technically genius but if you have no roll its just missing the elemental.

It is worth remembering that albums didn’t really take off until the seventies in the Early to mid sixties people had limited collections and vinyl was expensive
New sub, I've watched a few videos and enjoyed the insight and opinions given. I hope i don't get attacked for saying my favorite band since i was 8 years old has been Queen. People can love them or hate them. I grew up in the 80's and 90s in America, and Queen were not big here then at all. I was the only one among a sea of girls with posters of New Kids on the block in their lockers who had a great pic of Freddie and Brian in mine. Their studio albums are worth a listen, just my opinion. The deep cuts are intriguing and very prog. Especially their first album. They never outwardly "borrowed" from other artists as much as some others. To me, this list makes sense. Queen, for whatever reason, have gained some popularity in the states since the time i first discovered them. That's for sure. They are inventive and original. That is just my take.
The Eagles considered the Little River Band as the ants pants for rock vocal harmony. LRB's 8 minute Its a Long Way There is probably my favourite prog track by a non prog band: melody, harmonies, strings and the guitar performance by Ric Formosa is off the scale. He also arranged the strings.

Pink Floyd - yes, well. I was going out with someone who was mad for Floyd. OMG. Saw them a fair bit, but oh, they were self-indulgent. And for the concert goer, they didn't connect with the audience. They came on, played the music and went home. A long time later I saw Radiohead. The opposite. They talked to the audience, mostly Thom, and they communicated. You felt part of it. AC/DC right on. Never seen them live, but I'd really love to, even now. Led Zeppelin, saw them early, at the Bath Festival. Even then the charisma was off the scale. And every member of LZ were the best at what they did. A lot of it was that Page and Jones knew what they were doing when they started, and they knew how to get there. Eagles - I prefer Joe Walsh on his own. Queen were great, but only because of Freddie. Without him, they were a good band, but not great. Went to London and saw the pre-auction show at Sothebys. I would have taken that house, if I had the money. Which I don't. The Beatles started it all. Without them none of the others would have existed - not just (just?) because of their music, but because they brought the money back into popular music.
You mentioned that you think you need to do a video on Queen, may I suggest you listen to A Night at the Opera, it's generally considered to be their best album, it does have Bohemian Rhapsody plus a couple of other hits but the range of musical styles is definitely worth checking out
Although I do love ANATO, I would go for Queen II as their best. I consider it to be the queenest Queen album. Very few albums in history have had that much work put into them. Vocal harmonies are insane. I wish they would have kept working as hard as they did on their first 4 albums after the tremendous BoRap success.
I think it is called Sound Scan which was a more recent (1980s) development which actually counts every copy sold. Previpisly sales were based upon albums shipped. Snd that is why the total is an estinate for any band starting before Sound Scan. Metallica's verified and assumed numbers are close because they came out closer tp Sound scan. The Rolling Stones numbers are far apart because of 20+ years prior to spund scan, including their biggest albums. Metallica's self titled blockbuster was after Sound Scan. I accidentally hung out with Anthrax on the day I first evrr heard of them at a Night Ranger show at Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ. Scott Ian was really, really cool. July 4th, 1986.
are you making a differentiation between bands and groups or are you excluding groups that were more pop disco rock groups. because ABBA seems to be missing
Where was number 3? Also, his lack of appreciation for Pink Floyd comes from someone who is not educated in music. The Sex Pistols were a short-term gimmick, Pink Floyd have been going for decades and have influenced almost every band since, especially the indie guitar bands and psychedelia and even funk bands like Funkadelic especially with stage presentation with projected screens and light shows.
It would be interesting to have a video that looks at the cultural divide between America and the UK in terms of the commercial success and cultural relevance of bands because sometimes I think the relative size of the USA skews the discussion against the experience of growing up listening to music in the UK.

I just came upon your video, and enjoyed this list and how you covered it. I have no arguments , as I understand how these bands earned their status. I'm 67 yrs and from Texas, and just would like to suggest you check out other Eagles songs other than Hotel California. They ruled the 70's over here, and all of the members were remarkably talented and went on to do great things separately from the group. I was very sceptical about this guy and this video confirmed it. First off that top he's wearing is horrific and says a lot about the wearer i.e. no style sense whatsoever. Secondly as a long-term U2 fan his part about U2 was laughable. He says they should have stopped after Joshua Tree. Yet they go on to make arguably one of the greatest albums ever in Achtung Baby. He also claims he met a guy around the time of Achtung Baby working on the song Beautiful Day. Well Achtung Baby was released in 1991 and Beautiful Day was written in 1999/2000, so he's almost ten years off with his dates. So, I call bullshit. Also they have sold FAR more than 115M certified sales, it's more like £175M and 200 million claimed sales. Also, anyone who only owns one of U2s albums has no right making any comment about successful and important bands. Also, they were playing stadium long before the Joshua Tree. I appreciate you can't know a lot about all bands, but still do some research if you're going to go out into the public domain....full of shit this guy.
Yessir! So over produced and toothless! This is America's greatest hard rock band (along with Van Halen) just pouring radio syrup over music that should crackle and burn, with those two guitarists......C'mon now! I put most of the blame on Tyler, falling in love with his many ballads tearing up the charts and fattening his wallet. I get that bands must advance their sound, must stay somewhat relevant, but there has to be more of their core sound and attitude in their later day material, without all the ten thousand outside writers and production gloss. I do like some of the Pump and Get A Grip albums, but still so much more interesting material that should have surfaced - surprised Joe and Brad didn't insist on more of a return to hard rocking roots. I guess money talks, once again!

You crack me up, Andy. I continue to agree with most of your likes and dislikes. Which is why I am confused over your high regard for Metallica: Master of Cliches. From my perspective, the only thing they've managed to be "great" at is loudness and repetition, and I find their songs sophomoric at best. But yeah - The "bloody" Eagles... And the Rolling Stones were only "okay" and you cited the same handful of songs I always felt were exceptional. I would have thought you'd put Achtung Baby over Joshua Tree, great as that is. The Stones were past their prime when "Tattoo You" came out, and I can see thinking Exile is overrated. Try the late 60's stuff like "Beggar's Banquet" and "Gimme Shelter."
There’s absolutely no way Led Zeppelin sold only 140 million. No way. They sold nearly 120 million in the US alone. That means worldwide they sold barely 30 million outside the US. Considering all the places they toured all over Europe, Japan, North America, Australia, that just doesn’t seem right.
Joshua Tree is when they hit on all cylinders. Southwest USA (including eastern Cali with Joshua Tree National Park) trip for them was an inspiration for many (all?) of these songs. I like them all but "God's Country" is over the top good. As an American, it resonates with me.
Interesting ranking/list; all usual suspects present and accounted for. Would be interesting to see a ranking of the 10 most successful recording artists of all time.
Its all about the songwriting. The Eagles perfected easy listening songwriting with the right amount of lyrical meaning, vocal emotion with superb playing and production. Where I live in Australia, Eagles and Elton John CD's are ubiquitous at flea markets. Nobody buys U2.
The 10 most successful in a world where the masses understood musicianship innovation creativity would be Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Weather Report, Zappa & Mothers, Steely Dan, Headhunters, Tony Williams Lifetime, Pat Metheny Group, Yes and King Crimson 😁
Interesting that 5 of the bands are from the UK, and U2 and AC/DC are clearly products of the UK music industry. We're a tiny island, yet have had a massive affect on music in the 20th century.

You're not looking at performance revenues. Thiose are basically more important since CD sales collapsed. Stones make a lot of money performing and relatibvely little from sales / streaming.
I have a recommendation, Andy. If you love AC/DC so much you need to hear the follow up to For Those About to Rock: Flick of the Switch. Side A is absolutely brilliant, as you would say. Trust me and treat yourself!
Flick of the Switch, probably their worst album. Sounds like an AC/DC cover-band experimenting with using some randomising process, or a Ouija board. Think they were on auto-pilot.

Exile on Main Street has to grow on you. I will admit when I first listened to it, it was boring and I put it away until I heard two songs from it on The Departed. One documentary I saw about the album is decent and the other one I saw on HBO was good. I didn't know they went through tax and publishing issues during the early 70s.

It's not the best album song-wise, but it has a unique sound due to the unique circumstances of its recording, and that sound works magically well with that rootsy GospelAmericanaBluesCountryRocknroll the Stones played then. And there is a part in there 3/4 through that's almost ambient. Also it has Billy Preston and Nicky Hopkins. I always loved The Stones, but even I was underwhelmed with Exile at first, but once I got into the vibe, it became a total favourite. Maybe it sounds even better in summer?
Like Shakespeare it takes some personal involvement. But it sure as hell is not boring. May the good lord shine a light on you, make every song you sing, your favorite tune. Ah what a blessing !
Most excellent video I'm gonna be a little blasphemous right on the onset and it may be that my natural instinct is to push against the majority so I own albums by all these bands I think AC/DC in my humble opinion as two great albums back in black and thunderstorm as for me I think all the other albums have one or two maybe three good songs songs on them and the rest rest or fillers U2 has two albums the Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum album after these are crap and a sell out with Metallica I think anything after the Black Album shows the failure of success when it comes to the Beatles I'm a great fan of the second half of the Beatles starting with revolver Aerosmith I think the first two albums were the greatest and their second album Get Your Wings nudges the first one out because of their cover of train kept the Roland which is my favorite Aerosmith song The Eagles I like the original Eagles best and they were country rock Led Zeppelin I love all the albums I really enjoyed towards the end in through the outdoor really showed The Genius of John Paul Jones the most underrated member of the band and I feel like he is The Rock what's the band stood on you're going to hate this but I feel like for no other reason then the evidence of the longevity and ability to stay relevant the Rolling Stones of probably the greatest band in Rock and Roll history do I like everything they did no but who else after 60 years in the business steel command the concerts attendance that they can
If the Beatles hadn’t existed, there would have been no Big Bang, no Frank Zappa, no internal combustion engine. ‘Nuff said. As for Led Zep, I’ve heard that Robert Plant nicked Roger Daltrey’s hair and trousers, Steve Marriott's voice, and their band name was gifted from The Who. And that Jimmy Page nicked all the old Blues guys’ riffs and songs without as much as a by-your-leave. So I don’t know what to think.
I've said it before, I may have even said it here, without The Beatles, music as we know it now would not exist. By this I mean there would have been no Rolling Stones, No Who, no Kinks, no Animals, etc. etc. I was there, I was 11 years old. The world was a black hole, John Kennedy had just been assassinated, people were miserable, then on Feb. 9, 1964 The Beatles appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, and in effect change the world. @@AndyEdwardsDrummer I'm a big Yes fan and I saw the Jon Davison fronted Yes when Squire and White were still there. It was great, Davison singing like he really loved the music. The current line up can all still sing and play; is it just Steve Howe and a backing band? I'm thinking more of bands who can no longer sing, whose voices are shot (Don Henley, Ian Anderson) or whose line up bears little resemblance to their heyday. (Oops I've just condemned Yes!) Rick Wakeman has done the sensible thing and announced his retirement but long may he continue to record while he still has the creative spark. Steve Hackett (love him also) continues to defy his age but I hope he knows when to pack in. Our heroes can't go on forever just like us. I can no longer do standing gigs (I'm 67) and I like to know how convenient the toilet facilities are before I buy tickets!

Yepper do, Don seems to have played perfect solos on every damn Eagles song he was involved with! I can literally hear the entire solo from One Of These Nights in my head, without even thinking very hard about it - that's the mark of a great solo! Felder's solos have great dynamics, and they are just so melodically put together, perfect note choices! Killer tone, as well, and as you said, together with Joe Walsh - can't miss tag team of two highly skilled players, who always played for the song. New sub, I've watched a few videos and enjoyed the insight and opinions given. I hope i don't get attacked for saying my favorite band since i was 8 years old has been Queen. People can love them or hate them. I grew up in the 80's and 90s in America, and Queen were not big here then at all. I was the only one among a sea of girls with posters of New Kids on the block in their lockers who had a great pic of Freddie and Brian in mine. Their studio albums are worth a listen, just my opinion. The deep cuts are intriguing and very prog. Especially their first album. They never outwardly "borrowed" from other artists as much as some others. To me, this list makes sense. Queen, for whatever reason, have gained some popularity in the states since the time i first discovered them. That's for sure. They are inventive and original. That is just my take.

The Eagles considered the Little River Band as the ants pants for rock vocal harmony. LRB's 8 minute Its a Long Way There is probably my favourite prog track by a non prog band: melody, harmonies, strings and the guitar performance by Ric Formosa is off the scale. He also arranged the strings.

Pink Floyd - yes, well. I was going out with someone who was mad for Floyd. OMG. Saw them a fair bit, but oh, they were self-indulgent. And for the concert goer, they didn't connect with the audience. They came on, played the music and went home. A long time later I saw Radiohead. The opposite. They talked to the audience, mostly Thom, and they communicated. You felt part of it. AC/DC right on. Never seen them live, but I'd really love to, even now. Led Zeppelin, saw them early, at the Bath Festival. Even then the charisma was off the scale. And every member of LZ were the best at what they did. A lot of it was that Page and Jones knew what they were doing when they started, and they knew how to get there. Eagles - I prefer Joe Walsh on his own. Queen were great, but only because of Freddie. Without him, they were a good band, but not great. Went to London and saw the pre-auction show at Sothebys. I would have taken that house, if I had the money. Which I don't. The Beatles started it all. Without them none of the others would have existed - not just (just?) because of their music, but because they brought the money back into popular music.
Going to see later Floyd was like the same experience of seeing an orchestra

You mentioned that you think you need to do a video on Queen, may I suggest you listen to A Night at the Opera, it's generally considered to be their best album, it does have Bohemian Rhapsody plus a couple of other hits but the range of musical styles is definitely worth checking out
Although I do love ANATO, I would go for Queen II as their best. I consider it to be the queenest Queen album. Very few albums in history have had that much work put into them. Vocal harmonies are insane. I wish they would have kept working as hard as they did on their first 4 albums after the tremendous BoRap success.

I think it is called Sound Scan which was a more recent (1980s) development which actually counts every copy sold. Previpisly sales were based upon albums shipped. Snd that is why the total is an estinate for any band starting before Sound Scan.
Metallica's verified and assumed numbers are close because they came out closer tp Sound scan. The Rolling Stones numbers are far apart because of 20+ years prior to spund scan, including their biggest albums. Metallica's self titled blockbuster was after Sound Scan.
I accidentally hung out with Anthrax on the day I first evrr heard of them at a Night Ranger show at Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ. Scott Ian was really, really cool. July 4th, 1986.

I've hated Queen since I was a kid in the 70s.
Where was number 3? Also, his lack of appreciation for Pink Floyd comes from someone who is not educated in music. The Sex Pistols were a short-term gimmick, Pink Floyd have been going for decades and have influenced almost every band since, especially the indie guitar bands and psychedelia and even funk bands like Funkadelic especially with stage presentation with projected screens and light shows.
Most of Pink Floyd's music is lullabies for stoners.

It would be interesting to have a video that looks at the cultural divide between America and the UK in terms of the commercial success and cultural relevance of bands because sometimes I think the relative size of the USA skews the discussion against the experience of growing up listening to music in the UK.

I'm 67 yrs and from Texas, and just would like to suggest you check out other Eagles songs other than Hotel California. They ruled the 70's over here, and all of the members were remarkably talented and went on to do great things separately from the group. I was very sceptical about this guy and this video confirmed it. First off that top he's wearing is horrific and says a lot about the wearer i.e. no style sense whatsoever.
Secondly as a long-term U2 fan his part about U2 was laughable. He says they should have stopped after Joshua Tree. Yet they go on to make arguably one of the greatest albums ever in Achtung Baby. He also claims he met a guy around the time of Achtung Baby working on the song Beautiful Day. Well Achtung Baby was released in 1991 and Beautiful Day was written in 1999/2000, so he's almost ten years off with his dates. So, I call bullshit. Also they have sold FAR more than 115M certified sales, it's more like £175M and 200 million claimed sales. Also, anyone who only owns one of U2s albums has no right making any comment about successful and important bands. Also, they were playing stadium long before the Joshua Tree. I appreciate you can't know a lot about all bands, but still do some research if you're going to go out into the public domain....full of shit this guy.

As someone who grew up with Aerosmith I can’t stomach the crap once they hooked up with Desmond Child et al… and polished up.
Yessir! So over produced and toothless! This is America's greatest hard rock band (along with Van Halen) just pouring radio syrup over music that should crackle and burn, with those two guitarists......C'mon now! I put most of the blame on Tyler, falling in love with his many ballads tearing up the charts and fattening his wallet. I get that bands must advance their sound, must stay somewhat relevant, but there has to be more of their core sound and attitude in their later day material, without all the ten thousand outside writers and production gloss. I do like some of the Pump and Get A Grip albums, but still so much more interesting material that should have surfaced - surprised Joe and Brad didn't insist on more of a return to hard rocking roots. I guess money talks, once again!

You crack me up, Andy. I continue to agree with most of your likes and dislikes. Which is why I am confused over your high regard for Metallica: Master of Cliches. From my perspective, the only thing they've managed to be "great" at is loudness and repetition, and I find their songs sophomoric at best. But yeah - The "bloody" Eagles... And the Rolling Stones were only "okay" and you cited the same handful of songs I always felt were exceptional. I would have thought you'd put Achtung Baby over Joshua Tree, great as that is. The Stones were past their prime when "Tattoo You" came out, and I can see thinking Exile is overrated. Try the late 60's stuff like "Beggar's Banquet" and "Gimme Shelter."

Stones generated a lot of $$$ with their decades of mega tours and merchandising. Surely no one can touch them in that regard.
There’s absolutely no way Led Zeppelin sold only 140 million. No way. They sold nearly 120 million in the US alone. That means worldwide they sold barely 30 million outside the US. Considering all the places they toured all over Europe, Japan, North America, Australia, that just doesn’t seem right.

Joshua Tree is when they hit on all cylinders. Southwest USA (including eastern Cali with Joshua Tree National Park) trip for them was an inspiration for many (all?) of these songs. I like them all but "God's Country" is over the top good. As an American, it resonates with me.

"In God's Country" is probably my least favorite song in The Joshua Tree, but I still very much enjoy it. To me, Joshua is a perfect album.
I came here expecting The Beatles to be number 1, and was pleasantly surprised that they weren't.

Its all about the songwriting. The Eagles perfected easy listening songwriting with the right amount of lyrical meaning, vocal emotion with superb playing and production. Where I live in Australia, Eagles and Elton John CD's are ubiquitous at flea markets. Nobody buys U2.

Interesting that 5 of the bands are from the UK, and U2 and AC/DC are clearly products of the UK music industry. We're a tiny island, yet have had a massive affect on music in the 20th century.

I have a recommendation, Andy. If you love AC/DC so much you need to hear the follow up to For Those About to Rock: Flick of the Switch. Side A is absolutely brilliant, as you would say. Trust me and treat yourself!
Flick of the Switch, probably their worst album. Sounds like an AC/DC cover-band experimenting with using some randomising process, or a Ouija board. Think they were on auto-pilot.

Exile on Main Street has to grow on you. I will admit when I first listened to it, it was boring and I put it away until I heard two songs from it on The Departed. One documentary I saw about the album is decent and the other one I saw on HBO was good. I didn't know they went through tax and publishing issues during the early 70s.

It's not the best album song-wise, but it has a unique sound due to the unique circumstances of its recording, and that sound works magically well with that rootsy GospelAmericanaBluesCountryRocknroll the Stones played then. And there is a part in there 3/4 through that's almost ambient. Also it has Billy Preston and Nicky Hopkins. I always loved The Stones, but even I was underwhelmed with Exile at first, but once I got into the vibe, it became a total favourite. Maybe it sounds even better in summer?
Like Shakespeare it takes some personal involvement. But it sure as hell is not boring. May the good lord shine a light on you, make every song you sing, your favorite tune. Ah what a blessing !

Most excellent video I'm gonna be a little blasphemous right on the onset and it may be that my natural instinct is to push against the majority so I own albums by all these bands I think AC/DC in my humble opinion as two great albums back in black and thunderstorm as for me I think all the other albums have one or two maybe three good songs songs on them and the rest rest or fillers U2 has two albums the Joshua Tree and Rattle and Hum album after these are crap and a sell out with Metallica I think anything after the Black Album shows the failure of success when it comes to the Beatles I'm a great fan of the second half of the Beatles starting with revolver Aerosmith I think the first two albums were the greatest and their second album Get Your Wings nudges the first one out because of their cover of train kept the Roland which is my favorite Aerosmith song The Eagles I like the original Eagles best and they were country rock Led Zeppelin I love all the albums I really enjoyed towards the end in through the outdoor really showed The Genius of John Paul Jones the most underrated member of the band and I feel like he is The Rock what's the band stood on you're going to hate this but I feel like for no other reason then the evidence of the longevity and ability to stay relevant the Rolling Stones of probably the greatest band in Rock and Roll history do I like everything they did no but who else after 60 years in the business steel command the concerts attendance that they can

I've said it before, I may have even said it here, without The Beatles, music as we know it now would not exist. By this I mean there would have been no Rolling Stones, No Who, no Kinks, no Animals, etc. etc. I was there, I was 11 years old. The world was a black hole, John Kennedy had just been assassinated, people were miserable, then on Feb. 9, 1964 The Beatles appear on The Ed Sullivan Show, and in effect change the world. People can argue that point, of course. Thanks for your list and opinions, Andy, always a pleasure.

@@AndyEdwardsDrummer I'm a big Yes fan and I saw the Jon Davison fronted Yes when Squire and White were still there. It was great, Davison singing like he really loved the music. The current line up can all still sing and play; is it just Steve Howe and a backing band? I'm thinking more of bands who can no longer sing, whose voices are shot (Don Henley, Ian Anderson) or whose line up bears little resemblance to their heyday. (Oops I've just condemned Yes!) Rick Wakeman has done the sensible thing and announced his retirement but long may he continue to record while he still has the creative spark. Steve Hackett (love him also) continues to defy his age but I hope he knows when to pack in. Our heroes can't go on forever just like us. I can no longer do standing gigs (I'm 67) and I like to know how convenient the toilet facilities are before I buy tickets!

Yepper do, Don seems to have played perfect solos on every damn Eagles song he was involved with! I can literally hear the entire solo from One Of These Nights in my head, without even thinking very hard about it - that's the mark of a great solo! Felder's solos have great dynamics, and they are just so melodically put together, perfect note choices! Killer tone, as well, and as you said, together with Joe Walsh - can't miss tag team of two highly skilled players, who always played for the song. Glad to see Don Felder get some love - nice mention!
