The Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is just a building in Cleveland. No one gave them the ultimate authority. I have my own Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in my mind, and I am the ultimate authority.
You are exactly correct! Anyone who knows ANYTHING about music simply laughs at Jann Wenner's lists (Top 100 Artists of All Time, Top 10 Songs, Bands, Drummers, Guitarists, Singers, Producers, yadda, yadda, yadda of All Time.) Music is NOT Gymnastics. It is an "Artform" NOT a "Competition." An Olympic medal denotes success in a defined, measurable CONTEST. The judges' ratings represent how closely the athlete's performance matched the "Perfection" defined by the sport or who was fastest in completing the activity or who defeated their opponents. My favorite band R U S H was ignored by "Rolling Stone" magazine their entire career because Mr. Wenner NEVER liked them. He refused to induct them for DECADES until it became obvious to all that his snubbing of the greatest rock trio of all time was ridiculous. Many bands would have ignored the induction ceremony invitation when it finally arrived, but R U S H are mature men who understood that although they personally could NOT give a rat's ass about Mr. Wenner's "personal record collection," their inclusion meant a lot to some of their fans. So, on the airplane ride to the shore of Lake Erie, guitarist Alex Lifeson penned his rather long acceptance speech that contained the only word that R U S H had heard every time they read anything in RS: "BLAH!" 😂
It was apparent pretty early on that the RRHOF was Jan Werner's " authenticity" HOF. Finally pressured into accepting" less worthy" acts, It was delicious watching him forced to acknowledge Rush's significance. The bizarre inductee choices made over the years are too long to list. What finally made me dismiss the RRHOF altogether was Donna Summer being inducted. You don't expect Metallica to be in the Rn'B HOF. ALL nonsense at this point.
Frampton shined in Humble Pie, and his early solo work wasn't bad. In 1987 he was in Bowie's Glass Spider tour band, covering the Velvet Underground White Light White Heat I think. I saw it television so it must have happened.
The hall of fame puts in all kinds of non rock groups. Todd Rundgren was inducted but he considered the whole thing a sham and refused to even recognized the induction.
Iron Maiden and Jethro Tull not being in are the biggest head scratchers for me. Two of the most influential bands in history. Maiden even covered Cross Eyed Mary.
@@trashyraccoon2615 This is probably just me being trolled, but I am living witness to Jethro Tull being a mainstay of AOR rock radio in the US in the 70's and 80's. They won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Recording in 1989, 18 years after their amazing rock album Aqualung was released. Ian Anderson was even on the cover of Rolling Stone in 1971. They are decisively considered a rock bank in the US.
@@SB-kr1dw But everyone laughed when Tull beat Metallica for that Grammy. It made sense to nobody. I guess I missed out on their popularity, none of my friends could even name a Jethro Tull song when that happened. I guess the standards of what is considered Rock and Metal changed a lot in a few short years. I’m a huge Prog Rock fan and I just consider them prog, but maybe I am wrong. They definitely seem like a band lost to time to me though. It would be like putting Gentle Giant in the Rock Hall of Fame lol
It's all about Money, popularity, editorial bias, pandering to whatever is trending culturally and whatever the algorithm and marketing department determine which Music and Artists must be seen to be rewarded and championed in their Annual awards to keep the organisation "relevant." I'm genuinely not trolling when I say that, imho, if Prog Rock was, culturally speaking, predominantly a MOBO instead of predominantly a White, Middle Class phenomena, then Wenner and the R&RHOF would be falling over themselves to display their total and unequivocal, love, respect and deep appreciation for the genre and the bands and artists who created that music. The greatest ever moment in the history of the R&RHOF is, and will always be, Alex Lifesons acceptance "speech" when Rush when inducted in 2013....Skip to 4.35 for Alex's part but it's more impactful if you watch from the beginning imho. m.ruclips.net/video/1J9MQhwUpSk/видео.html
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame needs to change it's name to the Music Hall of Fame period. Enough with the " we are edgy by inducting a rap or country artist" bull crap. The Hall of Fame " in my opinion" is an extension of the corporate controlled music industry that for the last 30 yrs has done nothing but churn out pop techno radio friendly garbage. The development of great music artists doesn't exist anymore. It's not worth the time or money to a record label, quick dollar hits is where it's at. Induct every music artist on the planet and be done with it. My Hall of Fame is in my heart and mind and if I deem you worthy, your in.
Ah but you’re out of touch. There’s been incredible Rock music over the last 30 years, especially in the early 2000s with all the Jack White stuff, great bands like Arcade Fire, it goes on and on. And Rap is the new Rock, so there’s no reason not to include some. You’re just not dialed in, there’s always something interesting out there.
@@trashyraccoon2615 not out of touch at all. If you look at the state of "Rock" pop has out weighed it. The evolution has dwindled. There have been good bands over the years, but the way the Hall of Fame has overlooked so many deserving bands. There isn't even a standard that they follow. That's why I said it should be called the Music Hall of Fame.
You hit the nail on the head when you described it as a corporate controlled music industry. Everyone is saying they should call it the music hall of fame, but I think it should be reformed and kick out everyone who doesn't belong and put the one who do belong in.
Peter Frampton was , at one time, a genuine rock guy. HUMBLE PIE (let's consider them), 'Frampton's camel' and other solo work, before he was marketed as a 'pop idol', out of the blue..
The day we purchase our first house, me and the wife went out to dinner, and the drummer in the piano lounge was Steve Wahrer, the guy who sang 'Surfin' Bird', (Bird is the Word) back when he was in 'The Trashmen'! He passed away in 1989.
Kravitz is such a ridiculous nomination. Nothing musically half-decent about that. One of those artists that got away with taking the innovations of previous decades. And selling it to a younger audience. Who'd all been deceived into not realising what a rip-off artist he was. With the passage of time that music sounds even worse than it did originally.
Agreed! Kravitz puts me to sleep. Karaoke act! Listen to the real geniuses - James Brown, Sly & Family Stone, Parliament/Funkadelic, Stevie Wonder, Al Green etc. The bar is WAY TOO LOW FOR THESE ACTS GETTING IN!
I knew the HOF was “off” even before it was built, when I heard they’d hired I M Pei to design his usual sleek monument to high culture. They should’ve put the HOF in a block of mismatched rundown buildings, to capture the TRUE spirit of rock - gritty, black, working class, improvised, and patched together from many different humble roots. The HOF is the least Cleveland thing in Cleveland, making it the least ROCK thing in Cleveland.
Was stuck in Cleveland for work meeting and my host insisted I check it out. Kind of a cross between a mall and a mausoleum-a monument to commercialism. The only exhibit I remember were some looseleaf sheets covered in blue ink-rap lyrics by Ice T. That one relic had an aura about it.
I worked for the design company who designed the building and watched it evolve from early sketches and models. Years later I had art in there as part of an exhibit for several months and while it felt like a feather in my cap in a way, it was always a sh!ite feather. We always called it the Hall of Lame or Hall of Shame.
interesting. I envisioned a statue outside, of Chuck Berry, so you can understand the long list I could make of people who have no business being in there at all. I really thought someone had a great idea of a Hall for R&R. WRONG again. if it weren't for their annual HBO show (which rocks), I'd want it torn down.
The Kingston Trio * The Spencer Davis Group * Jan & Dean * The Monkees * Jethro Tull * King Crimson * Emerson, Lake & Palmer * Blood, Sweat & Tears * Kool & The Gang * Commodores * Foreigner
If we're honest, the Rock and Roll Hall of Lame hasn't been taken seriously for decades. They're more interested in being trendy than genuine. For years and years, Rush weren't considered because one idiot didn't personally like them. When they finally did get in, Alex Lifeson made his feelings known in the famous Blah Blah acceptance speech - check it out if you want to see something truly weird.
It is shite, simply because they accept people that don't play Rock and Roll and ignore for years true Rock and Roll artists. Just change the name to the Music Hall of Fame.
@@kentkearney6623 - one that actually has some rock n rollers in it - don’t think it would every catch on!? Still, I can totally see the inclusion of people like Jay Z and Whitney Houston over chancers like Iron Maiden.
Should have been in long long ago! Pure balls out rnr! Phil the ultimate front man, much replicated twin guitar attack, and Downey, an extremely underrated drummer who could play heavy, could play with funk, and always swings.
I went to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame about 23 years ago while on a work trip to Cleveland. It was dreadful. I want my $19.95 back. It’s worse than the Hard Rock Cafe and more expensive. The only reason it exists, is because, there’s nothing else to do in Cleveland except get mugged.
as long as you're going to mention all the bands who will never have a shot, TheJAM is worthy of mention. but they didn't sell records here in the USA. big obstacle right there, but they were a great power trio, as were the band who ,in the record stores, is right next to them, The JAMES GANG, named for an American family of bank robbers. THEY are worthy. TheJAM were worthy, especially by the time they banged out 'News of the World'. MOTORHEAD absolutely in a perfect World, would own the HALL. The RAMONES are in there because they toiled in poverty for years while playing every nite, for decades. a sympathy vote(I'm a fan), if I ever saw one. Mike Love now includes 'Rockaway beach' in HIS act. 2 acts paying tribute to each other, w/ an original RAMONES tune. it's far too late to repair the damage the Hall hath wrought. getting back to Dolly Parton, I remember Ray Charles openly being clueless, as to why he was being inducted, if memory serves. a big 'if'. but I don't have a huge problem w/ him. saw him once. safe to say, it wasn't a rock show. a showbiz show. but his contributions are there.
@@tonym994 Cool to see you're a Ramones fan, but they didn't get in due to a sympathy vote, The Ramones ARE punk rock, total trailblazers who pretty much invented three chord blasts of sonic fury, but with a pop sensibility, directly taken from early rock and roll. They are as important as it gets! ......."one, two, three, four...."
@226 I agree w/ you. WE know what you just stated, but I don't think the Hall has a clue about it. they're in. that's what matters. 'legs' McNeil's scene in "end of the Century''puts on the CLASH record which followed the RAMONES' emergence, and no offense to them, but the influence of the kids from Queens is evident. thanx, Legs. BTW, I have always said that they were as original as a rock band can be. they admired people like the BEACH BOYS, THE STOOGES, MC5, but they never sounded derivative. they sounded like themselves. 'Rockaway Beach' (which is now covered by Mike Love), is purposely a tribute to the Beach Boys. rock on,@treff.
@@tonym994 Yeah, you nailed it with Ramones having a singular sound all their own! My buds and I played the hell out of their first four or five albums, greatest party music ever! Saw them in concert more than any other band (I'm a metal guy, but love a wide array of music) and they never failed to deliver. The Jam were incredible, so important for literate punk rock, with great touches of soul and rhythm and blues. Very British, though, and didn't always translate here in the states, it took myself awhile to understand their greatness. Motorhead are sacred to me, they are the sound of unadulterated freedom! I own every album, all 347 of em', ha ha, and their sonic fury and speed, with killer riff after riff, never fails to deliver! RIP Lemmy and Phil! The Rock and Roll Hall Of Shame needs to change name to The Music Hall Of Fame and it would be cool to see an alternative institution pop up! Your posts were great reading - keep it up! 🤘🎸🎶
Hey, are you also going to talk about Napster, Spotify, and streaming? I feel like things are so fragmented in pop culture that it's hard for any band to get a big name. And great exciting rockers who were climbing and well-known or well-hated were part of the ride. My two cents.
Peter Frampton was also in Humble Pie as a founding member. Then he went solo. I don't think there's enough compassion in me to forgive him for "I'm In You" however, dear god that was wretched.
His work with Humble Pie was more than worthy. Solo albums prior to comes alive were more rock than the live album. He played I'm waiting for my man (VU) on the Glass Spider tour with Bowie. 1997 was youngest member of Ringo's all Starr band, with Jack Bruce, Simon Kirke, and the piano player and singer from Procul Harem, who chose The Devil went to Kansas as one of his 2 songs. Not bad. It's a plain shame, judging musicians by their least appealing work.
Nobody knows who Brian Eno is over here. None of those artists have much of a profile over here. What about the Eagles? Should they be in? What about Motley Crew or Sammy Hagar or Guns 'n' Roses or INXS? That's more their speed over here.
"Is it worth the aggravation, to find yourself a job when theres nothing worth working for? I was looking for some action, but all I found was cigarettes and alcohol" - That is not a shallow lyric. Oasis wrote lots of good lyrics on the first record which is a great album
Thanks Andy for cheering me up. I haven’t laughed this much or agreed with you firmly enough before. Your comment on Chris Cornell and Soundgarden was so true. What a voice.
Excellent rant and great points on the RRHOF! I was more involved with it a few years back, but every year, the nominations leave me very disappointed. Way too many deserving bands/artists not being recognized. Iron Maiden and Soundgarden have been nominated a few times, but the Foo Fighters and Rage Against the Machine were voted in instead. Joy Division/New Order were nominated last year, but Sheryl Crow was inducted over them. Motorhead has been nominated a few times. Hell, The Cure, T. Rex, Roxy Music, Judas Priest, Kate Bush, The Go-Go's, and Pat Benatar have just finally been inducted in the past 3 or 4 years. But this year, very little Rock bands are represented, and it seems to get worse every year.
This episode was hilarious! You can get a second career as a stand-up comedian. I'm 60 years old, so you and I are from the same time in music. I watch this channel for your insight and humor on the music we love.
Zappa was “inducted” posthumously in 1995, and he also got a posthumous Grammy for life time achievement. But he never had an album or a song even nominated during his lifetime. But they gave Grammies to Milli Vanilli! All award shows suck.
Cher was married to Greg Allmann. Her „Abuse“ of Autotune was so early that „Avant-garde“ Musicians claimed that she „burned“ Autotune for them for 10 Years. But now, to Sonny & Cher and Jazzrock: Look up how many early JazzRockers took Sonny & Cher, Mamas & Papas and Donovan Tunes and then remember that Sonny & Cher left Studio Time they did not use up to the Producer Harrold Battiste who produced Gris Gris by Dr. John in that Time Slot.
Andy Edwards, you kill me! Just watched this one and have to comment : I agree with everything you said (except about the rap stuff, I have no idea) What a great laugh. I don't have to rant, I could just push you up to the mike safe in the knowledge that you could speak on my behalf. Thanks man.
This weekend, RUclips suggeted a video of Ray Davies speech at the RRHOF. Paraphrasing, he said, that looking out at the crowd he realized that rock and roll had become respectable. Followed by "what a bummer".
Is this the same person as Sir Raymond Douglas Davies, "Knight Commander of The Most Excellent Order Of The British Empire"? Is so "what a hypocrite". (and I love The Kinks). A British Knight trumps anyone in RRHOF, inspite of the fact The British Empire finished in 1997. Jagger is a Knight as well. The horror of it.
I just discovered your videos a couple of days ago, and haven't watched anything else since then. I wondered what you thought of my favourite band, Motörhead, so I'm so pleased about what you said about them here. But I don't think Lemmy would have given a shit about being in the R'n'R Hall of fame!
You are a creative genius!! Bravo! Your comments on the Dave Matthews Band are so spot on. The word 'vanilla' comes to mind front and center! - double bravo Andy!! Oh...yes, I do feel somewhat depressed by this video but at the same time refreshed!
Joan Jett, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez, Nat King Cole and Harry Belafonte are so much more rockin' (and have done way more to shape rock music) than King Crimson, Can, Captain Beefheart, Soft Machine, Blue Oyster Cut, Rory Gallagher, The Scorpions, Thin Lizzy, The MC5, The Mahavishnu Orchestra or John Coltrane. You'd have to believe that a cat fart has more concussive power than an atom bomb to think that the RRHOF is merit based or worth following.
Hello Andy, first of all, thank you very much for your very profound contributions. For me, these are very entertaining and also pure joy. I laugh to dead every time they throw big artists and Bands into the pan and then some of their viewers get upset about it, personally I always have a lot of fun with it, even if it concerns Bands which I like very much myself (by the way: I'm a big fan of the music of Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant and King Crimson - so much for that). About the 'Hall of Fame': You are absolutely right here: most artists and Bands have no business here, in a real one 'Hall of Fame'. But the founders of 'The Hall of Fame' were never interested in Art, it was always just about business for them - and nothing else. It's as sad as it is true, unfortunately. Because if it weren't so, then why didn't they take it to this day, for example Gentle Giant and King Crimson, because they really deserve to be in here - in this so-called 'Hall of Fame'. That really says it all, or not? Conclusion: This is not 'The Hall of Fame'; it is the 'Hall of Disgrace'! 😐 Kind regards Heinz (Munich/Germany). 🌳🌲🌷⚘🌱✨P. S.: By the way: The same thing as with the 'Grammys & 'Oscars'. It's exact the same sh..! 😐
Awww, man, don't bust on Foreigner, lol. The great Mick Jones, one of the most underrated rock guitarists ever, and even for a couple of years, the late great Ian McDonald, (King Crimson) as multi-instrumentalist.
Agree on Iron Maiden but why have three of their influences (Jethro Tull, Thin Lizzy and UFO) not only not been inducted but have never even been nominated? Surely they deserve recognition over many of those that have already been inducted.
Frank`s greatest contribution to humanity is we should be a bit cynical and skeptical of what some would have us believe is true. Consider the source.@@Larrymh07
Beato has done a lot of great content, and well intended, including wonderful interviews with very significant artists. But I can’t stand his celebration of some utterly vacuous music, that happens to be well crafted
Sever Jann Wenner from The RHoF, and its legitimacy will increase instantly! Im convinced he uses people who were featured in the highest selling editions of Rolling Stone magazine for nomination. Thats why we have Mariah Carey, yet The MC5 get passed over numerous times!
Apparently prog rock is one of those genres that gets mostly shut out by the RnRHoF. I think they said no to Yes as well. Hopefully that’ll change at some point, not that it really matters.
Zoot Horn Rollo aka Bill Hackleroad put out an interesting album around 2000. If I recall correctly he teaches guitar and had a music store in a small town in the Pacific Northwest. Reading what he and other band members went through working for Beefheart is pretty harrowing.
Rock is Piazza, oh sorry, Pizza Culture: You take an African-American Style Bottom, throw some Red, White and Green on it and then you can throw everything but the Garbage Bin over it. No Music Style (Pop is no Style, it is a Multitude of Styles), not even Jazz or Brasilien Pop is so openenly „adolescent“ as Rock, so to throw Country and Salsa and Hip Hop in the Mix is Rock. Most of Rock is Pop but some Rock ain‘t - like some of this Channels beloved Progrock. Concerning the Rock‘n Roll Hall of Fame: I usually do not cite the German Bundeskanzler Adenauer but he nailed it: That is so unimportant that we do not even ignore it. I know it exists but most of the Time I don‘t hear about it and if I do I take it as Gossip, like right now. Don‘t need no Hall of Fame vor Beefheart or Björk or Belgian Super Progrocker Present, I love em either Way.
I saw Metallica and it was a great Concert. Fast and to the Point. So eventhough Johnny Cash sung Heavy Metal don‘t sound like Rock’n’Roll to me but then he was Country and never Rock‘n‘Roll either. Dolly Parton after her Induction to the Hall decided to Record a Rock‘n‘Roll Album to „earn“ it.
I do agree with your final conclusion. The newest artists I can think of that I respect are Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, and they have been around a while already. It sure looks like we are done producing bands like we once did.
Wait - you KNOW Bev Bevan? You should interview him for your channel and ask him what it was like playing in ELO arguably one of the most overdubbed bands in the UK at the time they were getting the big hits.
According to Andy Partridge, there were discussions / negotiations to put XTC in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame but they were expected to cough up money for it so he told them where to stuff it 🤔
Very entertaining video, Andy! Glad you mentioned Bev! I don’t put anybody in! Where’s Jethro Tull and Blue Oyster Cult. Also Pretty Things and The Pink Fairies!
Two things: I agree with everything you say. You also say things I’ve never thought before but also agree with. This is highly compelling to an old dude like myself. If ever I disagree with you, I’ll let you know. For now, that’s seems an unlikely possibility, making your ranting not actually rants but pleasant.
Brilliant video! However, just one tiny bone of contention: I don't believe that big band jazz is dead. It is still a potentially viable artistic force. Take, for example, the Dave Holland Big Band from the early 2000s, and their brilliant albums What Goes Around (2002) and (especially) Overtime (2005). This is new and vital big band jazz. Otherwise, I'm in complete agreement with you.
I agree I saw Peter Frampton as my first concert in 1979 at the Oakland coliseum in California I had won free tickets from radio station KMEL. Much later I discovered humble pie and I like them even more than Frampton solo stuff
7:55 Reminds of in the movie "Leadbelly" he likens the very act of recording music to a dead butterfly 🦋 pinned on a wall in a museum. Ohhhh it's a tomb. 😮 Never thought of that.

It really is absurd that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame carries the name that it does. It should have been called the "Music Hall of Fame" instead. It seems that today many of the music awards that they hand out are often given to artists who really have little or nothing to do with Rock and Roll. That is the consequence of over-commercialization. Sadly the RNR HOF has become little more than a curiosity, akin to the traveling circuses and side shows of the past, more than a legitimate institution.
Hello Andy I am about 5 years older than you and to answer your question I also saw a Motorhead in 1982 at The Warfield theater in San Francisco they were playing with krokus my ears were ringing for many days after the concert in fact to this day I have tinnitus and they may be the cause The Warfield theater was a very small venue and for Motorhead to be playing in that venue was torturous

I agree whit you in general when you say rock is dead. The charts and the radio rarely play rock except for the classic rock station that still play the same old hits in a loop never exceptionally playing a more obscure B side track. Some artist still manage to carry the spirit of rock like "REN" or is former busking band like " THE BIG PUSH". Ren is an amazing artist that does classic Rock with a Punk and Reggae influences. He also does Hip hop and rap. This guy is a true artist with a mishmash of influences and incredible raw musical and lyricism. I strongly believe that there is still great rock artist they just have a limited distribution. As for the decline of rock I strongly believe that, as the Bugle sang it, MTV is the culprit. After the rise MTV, rock transformed into Las Vegas type entertainment. Suddenly it was not enough to be a great musician or singer you had the beautiful and be a dancer as Madonna. It transformed pop and rock into in a new type of 50s musical comedy spectacle. I don't say that they are not talented but it is not real rock. Artist and band such as Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Jethro Tull or Yes never would have broken the charts after the advent of MTV. Some of the glam rock might have managed but most of the greats of the 60s or 70s wouldn't have made it. I fully agree with you about King Crimson, they are one of the most influential band in the history of rock. When I was a kid even the people who hated them still recognized that were trailblazers as Zappa and Captain Beefheart were. In the 80s I was also a big fan of jazz and my friend used to say: "Jazz is not dead it only smell funny". You are basically saying the same thing about rock. But there is still "some" great rock and jazz". It just not well distributed and not in the charts anymore. You could also take this to a wider scope and cover all forms of popular distributed arts forms such as music, cinema and literature. They all suffer from the corporate spirit of the distribution company that don't believe in taking risk anymore and don't really give creative freedom to the artist. Artist that are signed up today are mostly talented doers not trailblazers. Made up band constructed by producers à la One Direction. They have nothing to say. They want to make money not dream about changing the world.
I have always felt the same way about museums: The moment in which you put a piece on that pedestal Is very much dead because you cannot criticize It anymore, and if you do everyone acts like ; How daré you sir? Who aré you? What have you done in your life that compares with this trascendental piece? And of course, there's nothing wring with being in awe at something, that can be aspirational and inspirational, but It also becomes this almost intangible concept and it's not even about the art anymore. I remember that a few years ago, Carlos Slim; one of the richest men in the planet put Out an exhibition that included Marcel Duchamp's Urinal piece, and i was thinking, hang on, wasn't this piece meant to be against all this elitist pompis nonesense bullshit? And i thought somebody should get to the exhibition, put Out His Willy and use the good damn thing because that's the only way to give It back some of it's meaning. And that's the only way to give this organización some needed credibility, invite some pub band and destroy the good damn stage. To paraphrase "THAT" german guy with the amazing mustache, It Is dead and we have killed It! So yeah, fuck The Rock and roll hall of Fame.

Blame Mick Jones…..he started it!
I suppose they should just rename it, The Popular Music Hall of Fame.
I truly enjoy your perspective.
No. The popular sounds called 'music' hall of fame.
In fairness to Frampton, he was in Humble Pie.
The entertainment industry never tires of patting itself on the back.
Why this is used as a standard for greatness is beyond me. Greatness is what makes you happy when you listen to the music.
Good for him
@@markperry9427he understands the music industry rather well
My rock and roll Hall of fame is the shelves and crates of records and CDs that live in my house. Whatever happens in Cleveland means nothing to me.
Iron Maiden and Jethro Tull not being in are the biggest head scratchers for me. Two of the most influential bands in history. Maiden even covered Cross Eyed Mary.
Jethro Tull isn’t really considered Rock in the US. More Prog
Gentle Giant are great and totally deserve a place
It's all about Money, popularity, editorial bias, pandering to whatever is trending culturally and whatever the algorithm and marketing department determine which Music and Artists must be seen to be rewarded and championed in their Annual awards to keep the organisation "relevant."
I'm genuinely not trolling when I say that, imho, if Prog Rock was, culturally speaking, predominantly a MOBO instead of predominantly a White, Middle Class phenomena, then Wenner and the R&RHOF would be falling over themselves to display their total and unequivocal, love, respect and deep appreciation for the genre and the bands and artists who created that music.
The greatest ever moment in the history of the R&RHOF is, and will always be, Alex Lifesons acceptance "speech" when Rush when inducted in 2013....Skip to 4.35 for Alex's part but it's more impactful if you watch from the beginning imho.

You hit the nail on the head when you described it as a corporate controlled music industry. Everyone is saying they should call it the music hall of fame, but I think it should be reformed and kick out everyone who doesn't belong and put the one who do belong in.
I'm from Cleveland and refused to visit the Rock Hall of Fame until Black Sabbath was inducted. I've never been there since.
Peter Frampton was , at one time, a genuine rock guy. HUMBLE PIE (let's consider them), 'Frampton's camel' and other solo work, before he was marketed as a 'pop idol', out of the blue..
Brilliant episode. Please check your blood pressure. We need you fit and ready to go for the next episode.
This is hillarious! You ve really got me now!
The day we purchase our first house, me and the wife went out to dinner, and the drummer in the piano lounge was Steve Wahrer, the guy who sang 'Surfin' Bird', (Bird is the Word) back when he was in 'The Trashmen'! He passed away in 1989.

To show how rediculous the RNR HOF is, one of Lenny Kravitz's biggest hits is a cover of a Guess Who song. Guess Who has never been nominated.
How can The Guess Who not have been inducted?
Good Point! I've been wanting the Guess Who to get in for over 10 years now..
If you pout and lobby hard enough any band can get in. Just ask Journey
Of the city hall monstrosity in my city a friend long ago said it was designed by "You No Pay".
Great stuff: impassioned, outspoken, outraged, apoplectic, spot-on.
...and hilarious.
The Guess Who!!!
My first rock show was King Crimson. I'd never heard of them, but I never forgot.
I bet you remember, mine was Pink Floyd back in 1973.
Brian Setzer has made great strides with pushing the envelopes of both Big Band and Rockabilly - at the same time.
Good job. Didn't the ancient Egyptians bury people in structures shaped like that?
interesting. I envisioned a statue outside, of Chuck Berry, so you can understand the long list I could make of people who have no business being in there at all. I really thought someone had a great idea of a Hall for R&R. WRONG again. if it weren't for their annual HBO show (which rocks), I'd want it torn down.
The dust blows forward and the dust blows back.
Now that is worth an award ;-)

Hey, are you also going to talk about Napster, Spotify, and streaming? I feel like things are so fragmented in pop culture that it's hard for any band to get a big name. And great exciting rockers who were climbing and well-known or well-hated were part of the ride. My two cents.
Check out my DEATH OF ROCK video

They've got about 3 really good songs on their Crash album. I know that doesn't justify them making the $25 million a year they made touring one year.

Andy, you were the picture of ROCK & ROLL in that MOTORHEAD jersey.

The Beatles Lyric even at their most obtuse still have a wonderfully creative sense of wordplay (I am the Walrus, Glass Onion, Happiness Is a Warm Gun, Come Together- all Lennon btw) but they actually tried writing meaningful songs and those lyrics are Often quite good (A Day in the Life, Eleanor Rigby, Something, In My Life) I know nothing by Oasis that compares to those. Not even close. Champagne Supernova? Great title though… Noel is not talentless, just lazy
@@dylanolson4600the beatles wrote A LOT of truly sh *te lyrics, self indulgent meaningless tri pe, frar worse than anything by oasis
That start was amazing! 😂
Hilarious! I've never thought much one way or the other about the R&RHOF but this video compelled me to visit their web site to see who's in and who's not. I would say many of the inductees make sense and many do not; and there are some very obvious omissions IMO. However, I can't manage to get worked up about it but I'm so glad that Andy can, because it's (as I said) hilarious.
Amazing video! You made an empty guitar hanger turn into a black hand trying to scratch your head! How?
Or maybe my telly’s knackered…
I thought you were playing an outtake or alternate version of “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict” at around a minute
It was the "Grooving with a Brit" variant.
I PINK FLOYD ci sono nella RNR Hall of FAME ma Grazie A THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON album intero e per vari 45 giri di GRANDE successo vedi MONEY, US AND THEM, ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL, COMFORTABLY NUMB etc etc!!!!!!!!
I saw Hawkwind at the Warfield in 1979 and it wasn't painfully loud. Must have around the same time I saw Iggy Pop there and that band was loud.
@@lindsaycrawford6540 the funny thing is I actually went to the concert to see krokus. At the time I had never heard of Motorhead. I remember when they came on stage and all I saw was white light and I could not distinguish any of the songs it just sounded like a airplane taking off
I did end up buying motorheads t-shirt at the concert because I liked the logo. I also found it interesting that the fans at that concert were a mix of punks as well as biker types. I grew to appreciate motorhead more thru their videos later
Got to be your best ever. I laughed all the way through. Thanks Andy.
XTC should have their own Room: New Wave Bath in the Hall of Rock‘n‘Roll.
Which one of the Mothers of Invention should be in the Hall?

Fires burning spreading through the ark

Great video, Andy. Loved your vocals in your cover of Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with Andy.
