Jose, again..brilliant. You take a solid singular topic and turn it into a music theory masterclass by explaining and informing the way all great teachers do. By showing the connections to the subject and opening minds to "new" music it makes the students better informed and more musically well rounded. This may seem like gibberish to some readers but I KNOW you completely understand every word.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories It does translate and come through. It reminds me of my best classes. They were called "Music Theory" but it was the teacher informing and turning us on to great new music. The first time I heard Tubular Bells was in that class. BLEW my mind and it's still a favorite.

Nah it makes clear sense. I'd just recommend that you reserve the term "masterclass" for either special occasions or its literal usage, because it's thrown around commonly by verbose try-hards and sounds pretentious af. Otherwise, good comment 👍

Tea for One is another example of Jimmy Page being able to capture human emotion with the guitar like nobody else. The song conveys loneliness, longing and desperation. The whole band is just perfect on that track. Its a work of art.

I started with In Through The Out Door in 1979 and worked somewhat backwards. I had just started high school that year. My brother had the 8-track and his favorite song was All Of My My Love. He was killed November 30 coming back from a Kansas/Van Halen concert in Shreveport, La and I started listening to that album as I slept each night to feel closer to him. It made me become obsessed with drums and by 1982 I was playing drums in a band. I got cassette copies of Coda, Presence, and their first album in 1988 by trading two Doors cassettes for them. I think the guy gave me another one too. I got Houses of the Holy for Christmas in the mid 80s. By 1990 I had them all.

I really appreciate how you isolated moments from previous live Dazed and Confused solos that later were incorporated into Achilles Last Stand. A great ear you have. Regarding Tommy Bolin, he with Deep Purple came to do a show in Fort Worth, Tx sometime in 1976. A friend and I met Tommy the night before the show at a record store signing. Surprisingly, there weren't many people there and we were able to chat and joke around with Tommy. He was easy going and friendly. He told us that he had recently been over at Robert Plant's place and that Robert played for him new tracks from the next Zeppelin album. We asked how it sounded and he nodded his head and said the band sounds tight on it.

I always get goosebumps when Jimmy hits that last chord after the outro riff on 'Hots On For Nowhere'. It's a growling, perfect feedback chord he cut's off perfectly for effect. 'Candy Store Rock' has one of the most delicious sounding Rockabilly intro riffs I've ever heard. The solo begins with some of the best string bends I've ever heard. 'For Your Life' introduces us to Jimmy using a tremolo bar for some of the best sounding dives that are re-visited and taken to extremes of perfection with his otherworldly sounding bends on 'In The Evening', my favorite song of all time.

Ahh, "Achilles Last Stand". It really is a masterpiece when you think about it. Bonham and Jimmy have never been so tight and in synch with one another. Just the sheer power and force following the introduction, then throughout the entire song, is just amazing. Plants vocals range with reminders of both the "Immigrant Song" and "Kashmir". The lyrics, have to be some of the best Robert ever penned as well: "Oh the sweet refrain. Soothes the soul and calms the pain. Oh Albion remains. Sleeping now to rise again.''... (it continues): "Wandering and wondering. What place to rest the search? Well the mighty arms of Atlas. Hold the heavens from the earth. From the earth.." Nothing less than poetic genius. The first time I heard the song, the introduction especially, with Jimmy's multi-track layering, it just gave me goosebumps, it still does to this day. ''Tea for One", "For your Life", and "Nobody's Fault..." always stood out to me as exceptional, as well. Not a clunker on the entire album. If ever there was an underrated Zep album, this would be it, (my opinion). Thanks for your take on it, JCM; as usual, you left me with a sense of wanting more. You rock! Oh, and the Reggae tune footage from the Earl's Court gig, was an awesome inclusion. I'd never seen that before...

Very well done Sir, as usual. I discovered Led Zeppelin at the age of 13 (2011). After a long period of listening to Black Sabbath, Rammstein, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson etc. I rediscovered them last year. I am very thankful for your work, wich comes just at the right time for me.
Achilles Last Stand (especially the 1979 Knebworth performance, of curse the first evening) is my favorite Led Zeppelin tune. From the starting riff to the 5/4 part, it is a pretty heavy song, wich becomes more dramatic with the solo in the end and Roberts singing „ahh“. That solo gives me chills. The strong marching snare drum and Jimmys solo sound like looking deep into the abyss. I think, in this song, everyone of Led Zeppelin had a moment to shine. Very agressive, deep and still emotional. It sound like Led Zeppelin is having a knife between their theeth.

" The best of the guitaristic aspect of Zeppelin. In fact, " Tea For One " was the very first song I transcribed as a beginner guitar player. Great video! Keep up the grand work.

I was a teen in the 70's and worshiped Led Zeppelin. Had all the posters, all the albums, you know the drill. I would play their albums and study the album artwork and liner notes while I listened over and over. Getting news on the band was usually only from 2 places, the local rock radio station and magazines at the news stand. Because Zep rarely interviewed every morsel of news was so exciting and fascinating. Fast forward 45 years and I still find this news and insight fantastic! Thank you for your hard work!

I don't know why... I like all Led Zeppelin albums... I don't have a preference for any song because everything Led Zeppelin produced even if it's not theirs seems to be true works of art. But I like Presence. Heavy and magical in Bonham's strong beats and solos. The truth is... Led Zeppelin is good at everything they do or... did. And the channel is good too.

Jose, your Zeppelin documentary series is top shelf man. So professional, unhurried, and well done. I really appreciate the artistic breaks you offer the viewer -time to process what they see and hear. What really puts these documentaries well above commercial documentaries is your “inside baseball“ perspective. You’re not just a musician but also a great guitar player. I really appreciate how you break down equipment, song structures, compare and contrast songs and ideas from past experiments or phrases and offer historical perspective relative to what other bands were producing at the time. So so so much more interesting than anything produced for television. Cheers!!

    • @JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories
      @JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories  Год назад +1

Cato i REALLY value and appreciate your comment, made my day really. The inside baseball perspective you mention is funny as i grew up on NBA and Michael Jordan binge watching so many VHS' tapes on it , really hit a core memory now that you say it. You see, i believe music is not sports, but...playing a live show and delivering a great show is the same pressure as winning a game. I wanted to play soccer and as a kid i did play basketball, but music slowly changed course with the guitar at age 14. The sport sentiment though, never left my mind. I am a passionate musician who has found here on RUclips the perfect place to put it to work and monetize it as well, i am thankful everyday. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, it motivate me big time. I will keep going as long as i have the time and coffee ready! Have a great day!

We will look forward to it. I looked at your page, and have started watching 'Making of Houses of The Holy"; this was the 1st Zeppelin album I owned (actually handed down to me from one of my older brothers). It's always sounded a bit 'off', or different, to me, as I started hearing and buying other albums... Perhaps one of the reasons was that vocal change that you reference Plant suffered through right during the creation of this album? But I really liked it, on still do. I am far more a prog-rock and softer sound guy, than any kind of heavy rock / metal listener (think Pink Floyd, my favourite, and Yes, Jethro Tull, etc.), so, I lean to the tracks like Over the Hills and Far Away, No Quarter, Rain Song, or Going to California, Kashmir, and Tangerine, from other albums. But I love the playfulness that comes across on most of the tracks on The Houses album. It's just really fun, mostly. Cheers!

WOW!! So much to say....I think Presence is my fav Zeppelin album, for ALL the reasons you highlight in the musical analysis. I LOVE the way Achillies was formed from the Middle '73 Dazed Jams, it was like they decided to do a more raw and emotional version of The Song remains the same with the energy and spontaneity of playing live , you can feel the angst in that track, For your Life, I LOVE this song possibly more than any other Zeppelin song, there is something about the journey through this that takes you into the darkness but in such a good way, the SOUND, the SPACE, the sonic structure is INSANELY good!!......I was SO impressed they did this at the 02 even though Plant royally screwed up the middle section.....Hots on for Nowhere is just SO GOOD, I love playing this song!! Tea For One, All the BEST parts of the '73 live versions of Since I've Been Loving you.....he does those sweeping arpeggios in '73, and then puts them in Tea For one with more attitude, emotion and almost exploits his own playing!! Tea for One is EPIC!!
I absolutely tip my hat to your depth of musical analysis...there isn't much more that I could add.........Nobodies Fault but mine was the first Led Zeppeling song I ever properly and consciously listened to, my sister brought this album home in 1977, and for some reason put Side 2 on first, I was only 11 at the time but I will never forget the SOUND of the intro, I had never heard anything like that!! I was drawn so far in I literally wore that record out!!

I couldn't get enough time listening to it when it came out because the album was my older brother's and I had to ask permission to play it. Finally!! You're covering my favorite Zep album...and before I get to saying anything about my favorite Zep album, I would like to say: I'm with you, Jose. I, TOO, am a big fan of your favorite Zep LP, IN THROUGH THE OUT DOOR. I really resent the criticism ITTOD gets. The ideas (especially keyboard) are startling...and Pagey (heroin or not) is still letting his genius shine through with some of his contributions to tracks like CAROUSELAMBRA... But PRESENCE...PRESENCE...oh, PRESENCE. It's the TRUEST Zeppelin album, in my humble opinion. Though they did record the piano-led 10 RIBS & ALL/CARROT POD POD (POD), which was finally released as part of the deluxe PRESENCE box set (and for which no vocal was ever recorded), the released PRESENCE album is the only Zeppelin long-player featuring strictly the sound of the three-piece + vocals Zeppelin band (drums/bass/guitar plus vocals). And the album pulls off an amazing feat: it sounds raw AND also sounds majestic.
PRESENCE sounds like one band playing in a room, even though there are layers and layers of guitar overdubs. It sounds like it could have been cut live in one room, in one day...yet producer Pagey has clearly thought out all the different guitar overdubs AND they only serve to add punch to the sound...AND it still sounds in the end like a band playing together in one room. It sounds live. It's...RAW. It has that raw, rock 'n' roll band feel more than any other Zeppelin album. And, Robert in a wheelchair or not...they sound SO energetic. They sound so lively. Unbridled joy. Listen, for instance, to the super-energized solo Page guitar part he inserts in HOTS ON FOR NOWHERE from 3:00 - 4:01. That part gives me goosebumps. They did this album quickly...like a young band & without distractions. No cheesy production tricks. Just a great drum sound, deep & menacing bass, tons of perfectly-arranged & EQ'd guitar. IT IS, I THINK, ZEPPELIN'S TRUEST (and best) ALBUM. It's my desert-island Zeppelin disc.
And now, you've finally done a documentary series on this masterpiece of an album by history's all-time greatest rock band. Thank you, so much, Jose.
You're so talented. These documentaries are such a joy to watch. I've read so many Zeppelin books...and yet I always learn so much when I watch your documentaries. This will be another portion of the career-long Zeppelin documentary series you've been doing.
I hope your plan is to cover every album and other important milestones.
HAVE YOU CONSIDERED HOW AWESOME IT WOULD BE TO HAVE A WHOLE SERIES CONCENTRATING ON "THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME" FILM & ALBUM? I know you've covered parts of this in other documentaries, including the HOUSES OF THE HOLY and ITTOD documentaries...but imagine how fascinating and fun it would be to have an entire documentary (or series of documentaries) on the planning, filming & post-production of the best concert film ever made (and amazing soundtrack album).
ALSO, in addition to docs on the other Zep albums you have not yet covered, I can envision an excellent doc series on the BBC SESSIONS album/set. There would be so much great stuff to cover/discuss, like the amazing TRAVELLING RIVERSIDE BLUES recording, the "lost" tracks recently added, like SUNSHINE WOMAN...and the Playhouse Theatre show, etc.
The 2003 LED ZEPPELIN DVD is worthy of a documentary (or series of documentaries). Just discussing the (non) history of the band's live releases, the archives/vault, the efforts that went into the massive restorations of all the different films/video/multi-track elements...it is (to this day) the most excited I've EVER been purchasing a DVD. Making the set is, in and of itself, a fascinating story.
How about an entire series solely dedicated to the Page/Plant era? I love WALKING INTO CLARKSDALE. I basically consider it a Zeppelin album.
Anyway, keep up the great work! And thank you again. You make it even more exciting to be a Zeppelin fan. The band has never released documentaries THIS good.

I was the only Zeppelin fan in my high school that worshiped Presence. I learned to play Achilles in 2007 after studying Zappa for years and found it as difficult if not moreso the intro took days and the riff was easy compared to it. Presence's artwork mystified me and Page has confessed it's his most Willful record. For the mighty arms of Atlas....

Oh yes Patrick, totally, the intro for Achilles is HARD. You can tell Jimmy probably thought live on stage, "What the hell was i thinking lol". Your sentiments on the album, i agree 100% Thank you so much for watching! Hope you enjoyed Episode 2 of this series as well!

Excellent this first part. I'm looking forward to see Jose's approach to outtakes never used, especially the one tentatively called "Ten Ribs & All/Carrot Pod". That one would be, if ever completed with Robert's lyrics and Jimmy's solo (two guitar basic tracks were already there) one more song at the top of the band's cannon of classics. It would be the one song the pair with "Rain Song" at the Olympus of immortal rock ballads. It was left out of Presence only because it features a (brilliant and emotional) JPJ's piano melody, something they weren't willing to show on Presence. It's easy to find "Ten Ribs&All/Carrot Pod" here at YT and other platforms. Skip the 3 minute piano opening if you are in the guitar/bass/drums Presence mood, but rise the volume and fall in love with it anyway.
