Whether you are musical or not you must agree that this is by far the best massed band in the world you have to appreciate the amount of training and preparation these bandsmen and women put in to achieve such a high standard. Been watching them all my life and they still give me goose bumps.

Fantastic video! Feel free to correct me on the Drum Solos, if I've gotten any of them wrong.
The marches & Drum Solos played were,
    1) 0:01-The Mountbatten March
    (Drum Solo 3:19-Illawalla)
    2) 4:17-HM Jollies
    (Drum Solo 6:56-Kitchener's Army)
    3) 7:28-Trafalgar

Quite difficult / complex mars to play. It’s full of deviation and variations.
    Well done 👍🏻

Beating retreat doesn't mean running away it means going home after the days work

Given the amount of money that broadcasting companies routinely waste on frivolities why are events such as this ignored? I think that many of us can make a more than fair guess at the answer to that question.

How come they stopped half way up the mall?

Unknown to me either…their busses were parked on the Mall so it ended there.

I believe it was due to the weather. The massed bands had been out performing in a hot weather warning without a water break for about 1.5 hours up until this point.

Yeah a bit strange they finished halfway down The Mall, previous Beating the Retreats they've marched back to Wellington Barracks. The Army not letting the Royal Navy in? 😂

Hi - just a brief explanation: on campaign, HMRC (like most units in most armed services) 'retreat' to camp at sunset every evening, at which time, the piquets posted a long ways out from camp are also withdrawn to the security of the encampment.
It is a routine nightly event that was - in ancient times - traditionally triggered by and carried out to the beat of drums - hence, the expression: "Beating the Retreat" to describe the daily procedure of withdrawing all personnel to within the perimeter of the encampment for the night, for the purpose of securing the camp at night.
This nightly campaign procedure has long-since been turned into the highly-ritualised ceremonial procedure that you see in this video.
