I saw a mom and calf were the males that were there to mate the mom and calf got in trouble for a second with killer whales and the males came and protected them and forgot about mating all together. Cool. However if these guys are protecting something that’s already gone that’s kind of dumb. Might as well just let them eat it.

For some reason mammal eating orca really TRIGGER humpbacks. I understand they've gotta eat but they should be eating fish, not mammals... that's the gospel according to the humpback whale anyway. Wahahaha. This time the humpbacks were unsuccessful in saving the pray but quite often they are able to save lives out there. Much respect and love to humpbacks. I got bullied at school quite badly. There were plenty of orca in my schoolyard. I wish there'd been some humpbacks. Wahahaha.

Super interesting Humback whales will go out of their way to help Gray Whales ext from Orcas Attacking a baby whale. Seen it a few times. 9 times out of 10 the Orcas will give up if there’s a couple adults. Too much energy expended. However 1 and they always win. Kinda brutal watching when it’s a lesson for the younger Orcas and not to kill. Mother’s Day incident, but mother and baby actually survived. I don’t know how they did. The baby was rammed so many times. Went on for hours. I think of Tilicum the age he was captured, he was learning these hunting behavior’s. He never forgot it. I Believe he never forgot his family! If they had put him back into the waters with his family that are still alive, they would’ve accepted him.

Thank you for posting. This is the most educational account of this event so far
. My own "theory" is that we are witnessing what I simply call INTER-SPECIES INTERVENTION .
The one species will attack one of their own "enemies " in defence of another prey in instinctive response - both maternal and territorial . Examples would include the very famous house cat who drove off a dog attacking an autistic child. Another is the lion pride who scared off human abductors of a 12 year old girl-why- same reasons as above- the men looked and behaved like poachers who are a major threat. A leopard may take a baby gazelle from a troop of baboons and then let it go , due to a confusion of different instincts. Other examples are Hippos intervening with crocodiles preying on wildebeest , dolphins against sharks to protect humans etc , whales against Orca to protect seals, dolphins etc That is my " little theory " I don't mind if you don't agree - we are all getting an education . . .What do you think ?

Altruism. It is one of God's rarest and cruelest gifts. It is inherited, but for my family it's not dominant. Mine comes from my father's side, though it is very hard to pinpoint in him personally, but with years of careful studying... My sister has none, zero. Mother has none; both are Christian, "good" people, I dearly love but bc of my instinct; not bc I believe they are kind ppl. But I have one female cousin on paternal side who has it; it is not debilitating to her like mine, but it certainly affects her personality and shapes her life hugely. I may also be seeing it in her brother's oldest daughter, almost ten now. I don't see her much, but I think I have heard of some kindness in her... We are really just this fall starting to study the lineage in depth due to my progressive resentment of the trait and my impossibly progressive cynicism. I am now "homicidal" intermittently. Earlier today reading the newspaper I became enraptured in last year's stolen car with handicapped dog in back seat; car found 4 days later, dog had been killed in back seat. So now what to do? I contacted the involved parties, detective, etc. for updates... but that's not a good idea just in case the person was caught and I kill them. So now I'm on the dark web. I won't elaborate. So where to draw the line? Today was Christmas; an exciting seemingly normal holiday. But I read the paper and now this is my day. Tomorrow something else. That's altruism. It ruins my life. I am 40. At 7 my first controversial dog litter recon rescue. Then vegan. ALF 100%. Thanks for letting me rant. No more internet today, third time saying that.

i feel like killer whales are smart enough to know you dont take a fight you dont LB for LB win. water restricts large movement but the level of power in a whales body simply to move that body is enough to gash an orca near in two if a tail thrash connects.
let alone a mature humpback could breach at any point, bringing unimaginable destruction to anything underneath it.

Baleen whales such as gray whales and humpbacks do not travel in family units, unlike killer whales - where in many cases offspring stay with their moms for their entire lives. Gray whale moms usually travel just with their calf, but occasionally with others. Humpback moms also are seen only with their calves. No cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises) ever travel as a family units - with Dad, mom, and offspring; males do not linger after mating.

Its more of a dietary culture for transient killer whales to eat other marine mammals. Changing what they prefer to feed on doesnt happen. Those orcas who eat salmon or sharks evolved to eat those things specifically. Killer whales dont just u p and switch their diets. And to demand that their species change for YOU is fucking ridiculous. Grow up!

My understanding is that orca pods specialise in certain prey. Some only eat fish ? How about location and seasonal prey availability ?

Calling them either 'killer whale' or 'orca' is fine. They also have been called 'Grampus' or 'blackfish'. Most researchers prefer to use 'killer whale' as 'orca' is from their scientific name Orcinus Orca.

To protect the whales we need to control hunt the killers whales (Orcas), like we do with wolves in Scandinavia.

FYI: it is illegal to interfere with the feeding activity of any marine mammal (harassment). The attack was underway when we arrived, and the gray whale calf drowned within a few minutes of our arrival.

Thank you for posting, Dr. S-J.
it is of extreme interest, and my own observations of previously unseen bevhaviors in Gray Whales (persistence, calf care and protection, play in surf zones, and feeding in some North Pacific coastal areas - often occurring in wild conditions far from urban/industrial or motorized human activity, and unfortunately for research, not recorded or corroborated) ;ed me to pursue cognitive ethologiy.
Since childhood, affiliative delphinid and other ceatacean interaction occurred, with the cetaceans as initiators - the entire events being in their agile, uh, flippers, had long led me to understand that there is more going on cortically than the little of which we are aware.
Another misfortune was the sole significant research done back when opportunity was greater (1960s/70s before pollution, commercial emptying of oceanic trophic webs, and so on), was done for "defense" purposes by the US navy, which developed delphinid programs creating"suicide" explosive carriage, and other less immediately lethal human interfering with their lives and culture (culture, for those mistaking the word for something else, means environmentally and socially transmitted knowledge and experience).
up here on the North Pacific coast, I've come from tie to tie, upon bullet-riddled delphinid corpses (as well as like-murdered pinnipeds.
I feel that there should be, now that the internet has matured some, a report center for such violent , cruel, and dysfunctional human activities interfering with the lives of these other nations, as Beston called them.
This occurs all too heavily on ursids and canids , who have been in the most recent decade or more, my interest (although ungulates, too, suffer immensely from humans hindering their ancient seasonal migratory paths in numerous ways, along with the pure psychopathic use of blunderbuses to eliminate other species for imagined increased personal social status.
