Over 30 Killer Whales attacking 2 ADULT Gray Whales

- On March 30th, 2023 we witnessed several families of orcas attempting to predated on two adult grey whales. Killer whales are typically observed predating on grey whale calves during the months of April and May as they're make their annual migration back up to the Chukchi Sea of Alaska. The orcas were observed for 6 hours by several boats before giving up and letting the grey whales escape into shallow waters.
Absolutely incredible footage. Thanks for sharing. So glad the grey whales made it in the end! ❤️

Yes and no, they spent so much energy trying to get something to eat and weren't able to.
Orcas can find prey pretty much anywhere. I believe they enjoy the challenge of trying to bring down animals larger than themselves.
Are you sure they made it?! It was only one left at the end at the very last thing you see is an orca biting flesh off of it as blood came out. I don’t think they made it sadly.
@@Icarus_II orcas have problems with salmon stocks but it is easy to hunt anything they want
Gray whales fascinate me. The fact that they can battle orca and occasionally win is just astounding!!!
The two gray whales stood so close together facing an oncoming threat
I've never before seen the "rolling action" the grey whale employed. It clearly kept the Killer Whales from getting a good grip if they tried to do that.
Well, Orcas can take full grown Humpback or Grey Whale if they *bite* together... This 30 orcas. Orcas don't bite, but they drown their preys, or simply immobilize them.
@@moonlightelf591i think it's the ramming that the roll is meant to evade.
Would a ram even hurt the giant whales?@@daneg
@@Orca_mammal maybe. those horns are pointy! 😁 hehe. I believe the ramming is the primary way in which the orcas wound the larger cetaceans. they tire them too, of course. but I think they soften them up by with ramming before they try to drown. but I'm no expert and I've mostly only seen them do this to calves.
They may also be rolling in an effort to keep an eye on each orca, as they are also passing underneath. Baleen whales have the defense of their large tail flukes, which can easily kill or injure an orca with a direct hit. Orca have shown they know this and try to avoid that.
a lot of people commenting saying the orca's are protecting their bellies by rolling, i truly dont think thats the case
i think they are rolling to protect their fins, orcas have a track record of biting the fins off sharks and whales, we can see at 4:04 the left orca try bite/headbut the left whales fin
im certain the whales want nothing more other than to swim away but in order to swim they would have to extend their fins and risk them being chomped on
at 6:40 you can see a bite on a unfolded fin and at 6:45 you see how folding the fin helps
Agreed. I’ve seen similar footage of the killer whales going for the fins. I also wonder if the gray whales eyes are more on the top of their head and by rolling over they can see the attacks coming. Idk.
Whales can swim without fins. It's for protection.
This is absolutely incredible! Very brutal and sad but fascinating to watch. Monterey Bay has always and continues to be the best place on planet earth to go see Orcas! You just never know what your going to see from day to day. Wow!
Friends have said the same thing, Richard. They have been whale watching up and down the Pacific coast and always say Monterey Bay is the place to go.
They lived.
Thanks again for posting this; filming it couldn’t have been easy to watch. They were really trying to drown the grey, weren’t they.
Does anyone have info about the wounded greys?
No info but they’re probably okay. They have so much blubber to protect them from exactly this! The injuries will scar over they most likely didn’t hit any arteries or muscle bc it’s buried so deep.
@@meaghanclark1278 ah no they killed one, at the end. I'm presuming the other one got away. It's not the amount of blubber, the orcas ram and drown grey whales/humpbacks, etc
@@karynpappel1318 But...but it says in the description that they were allowed to escape at the end. 😢
@@karynpappel1318 wrong answer. It says that they got away in the description.
@@karynpappel1318 wrong answer babe. They got away in the end.
Insane footage! Nature is so violent…
Seeing the grey's take a defensive posture to protect their bellies… just fascinating.
Nature? Nature is nothing comapred to humanity. Ever saw male baby chicks being burned alive or grinded alive? Just because of...egg industry. If you eat eggs you oay for them to do that.
Boiling of live lobsters? Slaughterhouses...
Humanity....that is brutal stuff, we, god damned vermin, cancer of the planet Earth.
Is it? This was just their equivalent to a Thanksgiving Feast.....is that also violent?
@@AlaskaNavigatorwhat a stupid comment
They are not actually protecting their bellies when you see them constantly belly-up or upside down, they are doing that to be able to see better where the next Orca ram attack is coming from so they can roll to deflect the oncomming blow, making it a glancing blow instead of a full impact ram. The Orcas aren't typically interested in any part of the Grey Whales except their tounge usually...which you will see Orcas constantly try to bite right out of the whales mouth once they are so exhausted they don't even attempt to run away any longer. I live on Vancouver Island and the Grey Whales migrate past us every year trying to dodge the many Pods of Orcas waiting for them off our coast. They try to hug the coastline as close as possible so Orcas can't get below them in deep enough water or stay near Kelp Forests so the Orcas cant be able to ram attack them from below. Many Greys like to take a short cut and cross Monteray Bay instead of hug the coastline and right here is usually what happens if you take the short cut across the Bay as the Orcas wait and listen for Greys and their calfs to do this
@@AlaskaNavigatorMine is pretty violent 😂
Unbelievable seeing how two grey whales cooperate in defending themselves against the orcas, I wonder if this is an improvised, learned, or common behaviour

They aren't called "wolves of the ocean" for nothing folks.
Pretty inefficient and inept hunting by the "wolves of the sea" .
@@cyrusknowles8432 If Orca hunting techniques are inept to you then the hunting employed by every other creature save for humans are abhorrently pathetic.
@@brdjjdjd Wolves and lions are much more successful and efficient. Still ... Orcas are cute. 😉 hee hee.
Are the grey whales rolling on their backs to protect their underside I wonder? It seems like the roll, take a breath then roll again to protect their bellys...
Quantas roladas ela te deu ?
You got it . They roll as a defense against blows or bites . It makes it tougher to ram them as
Orca use head butting with enormous force . In other attacks you can see this impact bend
the Whale body or even lift it right out of the water. Rolling is a strategy used by several Whales
and seems instinctive as very young calves do it.
Absolutely. Orcas have now started to learn to attack great whites from below and only extract their liver!
They don’t usually attack adult grey whales they typically target the calves or weak & injured whales . Very brazen attack. The grey whales put up a great fight! I’m sure glad orcas don’t hunt us , yet lol. I’ve seen them in the wild in person off our coast . Amazing beast!
@@SageRosemaryTimedo Orca have a plate or hardened bones in the front of their face? That would give them the ability to be able to ram so hard without breaking their own heads
This was really sad to watch 😢I think the whale on the left was protecting the other whale more so,and the one that ended up bleeding 😢
I would find it hard to think that whale would survive the amount of punishment it recieved!
Also where did the other whale go?
And do you think they where Male & Female? Did they get bk together, what was the outcome ?
I'm so curious as to what happened to the other whale ?
Did it make a break for it and leave the other one, or did it parrish?
@@tonydelatorre7265 they killed one.
Clearly, this footage isn’t playing without any edits. No it is. It’s been changed and out of order. I do believe they killed one of the whales they took it down and drowned it. That’s why we don’t see one.
@eRiCa thanks for the reply😁I didn't know they would take down adults ,thought it was only the calves.
They truly are the wolves of the sea
Says they both escaped in the description
@philcollins1255 did they escape these dreadful orcas. They look cute but are causing huge imbalance. Truly can't stand them. Time someone wipes them out. They are ruthless
Again, Evan- thank you so much for this footage! To be at the right place at the right time! What a way for the younger orcas to learn the art of the hunt and kill with these whales. You truly see the hits and tail slaps, plus them using their noses to turn them over, as if to attempt to drown them so they can't breathe.
you know i do fancy a bit of orca meat. i say if they come to our shores we hunt them to show our youngens the art of the kill. and we team up with the grey wales to end this gang violence.
They aren't turning them over. The whales are rolling.
the whales roll in an attempt to protect their undersides.
The orcas are most definitely capable of rolling them over in a pod of that size, but more likely, the grey whales are rolling to protecting their blowholes and to slap their pectoral fins and flukes, to ward off, hit, and frighten the attackers.
Orcas don't ram repeatedly (especially not two massive grey whales) because trauma could severe a key artery in their nasal passage and other structures can be injured (this is how Kandu died at Sea World).
The Orcas strategy on larger prey is to disorient, drown, "kick" with their flutes, and bite.
This was a huge endeavor by 30 Orcas needing to feed their pod or starve.
Time to wipe out these orcas!
It’s amazing
Thank you so much for sharing!

9:20 is where the blood starts. They survived because they got to shallow waters. And yes they separated them

Thank you for answering my question. I was hoping they made it. I got to see JJ a gray whale that Sea World in San Diego rescued and later released. Orcas their strength is just on numbers. Gray whales the manage to win after 6 hours fighting with so many of them
The Orcas are so intelligent, this time around the grey whales were wise and determine to survive

Are you watching the video? Both whales are grey whales, no humpbacks. The greys were similar in size, so I don't think cow and calf.. ya I don't think the same video...or making things up.
soo what happend to the other one and what happend did any die im soo lost
@7:26 you can clearly see one of the orcas going in for a bite. Ouch.
Do the gray whales have any way to defend themselves? As in, typically much larger animals, even if they are not predators, have various defensive mechanisms. It looks like in the footage they can only bob and weave to try and avoid damage, but cannot hit the Orcas for any damage themselves.
Damn, that was brutal.
People don’t relies the scale pf this battle, i know how big an orca is and those whales are massive next to them
Is there any sound?
in the end , how were the grey whales ?😢😢😢😢😢😢
A Blue Whale was also attacked but escaped. Both Blue and Grey Whales are scarce.
Jesus... each of those tail swipes are like thunderclaps. The orcas always avoid the tail, I've noticed.

Left and went where??
30 killer whales?! WOW!
tHESE GREYS WERE LUCKY FOR THAT MANY ORCAS to focus on two truly lucky orcas have a kill ratio somewhere around 80~90 % ! try looking what is being called MEGA POD OF ORCAS THERE ARE SOOO MANY WOULD BE HARD TO COUNT BIGGEST GATHERING OF ORCAS I HAVE EVER SEEN AMAZING & MAJESTIC !
Hitting their body against opponents have three times weight and hard body would be extremely painful and damaging for the orcas, so it shouldn't be possible to fire it randomly.

How is that good for grays? In that spot they are fucked. Something is off ybout this story or you just dont wanna show us the end...
i think orcas were just bored and decided to bully them or teach their kids maybe? seems they couldve got one if they really wanted to.
This channel has no qualms about showing how brutal nature can be and definitely show the endings when they end in death too. It's the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Their job is literally to do research and not interfere. If they say the whales escaped, I'm sure they did.
I believe orcas enjoy the challenge of trying to bring down prey larger than themselves.
Tbh i don't understand why those orcas didn't attack their prey together? I mean this is 30 orcas. If they *bite* together at the same time, then Humpback or even Blue Whale won't survive.
@@moonlightelf591 Orcas have a weak bite.
@@Polosatiy_Varan what in misinformation is this? Orcas have one of the highest bite forces in nature.
@@lktzu2821 Nope. Killer whales (and dolphins generally) have weak jaws and teeth that are vulnerable to infection. This is why they beat up their prey before eating it.

These Whales have no teeth unfortunately; so they have a hard time protecting themselves.
They can kill you with one tail hit Becoz they are really big. That's the way they survive. In eating lot of food quickly than if they had teeth
Can the Gray Whale not out dive a Killer Whale when in deep water?
Ugh excuse me but the video shows the gray whales not escaping.......
Even Orca loves to go whaling as well.
Looks like the slightly smaller whale was probably the calf and once they separated it at the end they continue to tire it and drown it. I doubt it survived.
6 hours before giving up, now thats a lot of calories burnt for nothing

Where has the second grey whale gone???????
Cool. Thanks for sharing.
I wonder what they are saying to each other???
Blue Whales: " California is dangerous!"
Killer whales: " Let's mug these whales"
Blue Whales: singing " Rollin' Rollin',
Rollin'"
Killer Whales: singing " California love"
Cue Tupac...
The Whales lived because the Orcas were like "Nah we just playin.wit ya'll".
Those grey whales maybe a mother and a calf. Good thing the calf is no longer a baby. But I only saw one grey whale in the end of the video. It seems like both grey whales did not make it.
The issue is 9 out 0f 10 gray whale calf can’t survive and killed by orca or die .
The left whale already bloody😢
Can anyone tell me please Did whales survive???
They survived but later on when they are old and weak they will be eaten alive piece by piece. Happens to almost all animals actually. Do you think many deer check out in a retirement home or go peacefully to sleep under a tree? It's unlikely. They will be scented out by predators and literally eaten alive. Nature has always approved of predation and death. No death, no energy flow. No energy flow, no life.
Talk about gang violence. They ran up on them so damn quick.
Interesting how the Wahles dodge their bites with rolling back and forth. sometimes hit with fin
Orcas are the gangsters of the sea!!
It's like watching a gladiators match for life and not knowing if they made it at the end?
Amazing footage. Drones are helping us understand these natural phenomena. Those grey whales did an amazing job, but I'm pretty sure at least one didn't make it.
They didn't win with these two...but they win often with a mother and her calf.
well, you already answered A CALF!!! it´s very different that two adults...
They are the gang members of the sea for sure. Just screw it with other animals for no reason and with a bunch of them at once helpless animals mining their own business

I think in the end one of the grey whales was killed and only the other left. They were just playing around with the grey whale if they were serious that many orcas could have killed the whales in less than 15 minutes they were about the same size.
Imagine getting your a** beat for 6 hours and swimming off, wow I wish we could know the damage they endured by that. Nature is cruel
This is amazing video but highly edited. No idea what happened to the 1st whale. No idea if the orcas had dinner? Said it was graphic? I was waiting for the kill scene and blood. Nothing......
They both escaped to shallow waters it’s not a pay for view boxing match like lol true crime seems to be something more mayb up your line lol
2:50 tail slap!
The rolling action is making it hard the orcas to drown the whale,,
It doesn't look like the pod succeeded. If their goal was food, this would be a hard lesson in choosing easier targets. But there's a chance this is just fun for them
Poor gray Whales
Tal vez nadando a las profundidades se habrían podido salvar ambas, es posible en el pasado la técnica de las grises les funcionará pero no esta vez
I love orca but this time I want this two gray whales will survive.
Spectacular footage but seems very inefficient as an 'attack' by 30 orca!? Looked more like harrassing and haranguing, scarcely any biting and no concerted efforts to drown the whale which they had targeted? Was this an inexperienced assault? Its certainly fascinating but not what I expected having watched many such films.
I wonder if the orcas were successful
Y no sound? Kinda weird
