God, this breaks my heart. I just saw Deep Blue where 2 killer whales attack a baby humpback that was clutching to its mother. They kept trying to separate him from its mother for 6 hours and the baby was too exhausted to hold on. I can't get over how terrifying it must be to be stalked and attacked like that for SIX HOURS. and then the mother has to keep on her journey, alone. I was sobbing. I know it's just life and life can be brutal, but damn it's hard to watch.

@@samuellp1146 Killer Whales are such successful hunters (their actually the most successful predator of all aquatic creatures) that they're actually one of the few species in the ocean able to afford eating only certain parts of their prey. They are famously known for eating only the tongue's of whales and liver's of sharks and then discarding the body allowing it to be eaten by scavengers. They have such confidence in their hunting ability that they can literally afford to only eat the things they find "tastiest" and discard the rest, you may be right about their appetite but they absolutely can afford the luxury of choice.

Humpback whales are truly selfless and full of compassion (more than most humans are capable of), or else they would not have dared this rescue. We give these wondrous, sentient creatures too little credit for their bravery.
Orcas are the same ! sadly you witnesses two social species at the WAR ...but they are BOTH fenomenal creatures compasionate and inteligent . Terms of valid comparations are HARD to make here

This is fascinating. Orcas terrorize other whales. I find it interesting to see the intervention of the Humpbacks...perhaps this means they are able to understand the Grey's distress call?

That calf was a gray whale calf. Not a humpback. They were trying to defend gray whales.

Whales are so intensely complex. Watching Humpbacks try to help Gray Whale mothers is soul touching. Inter species interactions like this reveal to disputed possibilities that animals have a sense of feeling or morality. Maybe we should expand our definitions and accept there are things we can't understand because we are limited not the other way around.
Very proud of my sister who was the first to spot the Humpbacks and filmed this incredible footage.

Inter-species cooperation between grey whales and humpback whales is truly remarkable. And in our communities, many people remain silent when their peers are bullied.

@Ben Louis ok there are 2 MAJOR things you are overlooking:
1. It's common knowledge that when filming a documentary, you can't intervene; especially if the scenario is a predators hunting prey. That's what documentary are made for, to document nature unfolding.
2. Even if that wasn't the case, what could they have possibly been able to do to stop the orcas? If they were to move the boat to get between the orcas, what's to stop the orcas from swimming around or under the boat and continuing the attack? Or if they did move the boat it would run the risk of the boat getting damaged during the attack

Think about it this way
You are in that documentary crew. In the middle of Africa. 3 of you are crammed into a Land Rover jammed to the roof (and above) with camera gear and supplies. You are at the start of a three week odyssey to shoot a nature doc. A Lion cub is injured. What do you do? You are not a vet. You have no room in your vehicle. The nearest vet might be four days away via bumpy road. The cub would likely die on route even if you were not arrested for poaching. What about the Mother? You would have to tranquillize/immobilize her (how?) while you take her cub. Maybe you would also have to frighten off/disable the pride as well for your getaway. So now maybe you have a knocked out lion(s) right beside all your camera gear you left to make room for the cub as you race off to try and find somebody somewhere who knows how to heal a lion cub. Odds are good the mother would be eaten if knocked out when the land rover was out of sight. The cub would die on route. The equipment would be damaged, stolen or lost. You would run out of gas or time. All the animals you tried to save would be dead the documentary would not get done and likely you would never do another nature doc again.
A documentary crew is extremely limited in what they can do on location. A documentary shows what is actually happening, it is not a Disney movie. It is hell out there in the wild.
But a good documentary can help save a species. Global human impact on the environment is killing far more animals every hour than if every animal ever injured on camera could have been somehow saved.
99.9% of the time all a documentary can do is say "look at this thing happening here, send help"

They knew the threat and also the risks... but went out of their way to try and help a totally different species to them.

Humpback whales are amazing creatures. I've seen them save seals, humans, and now another whale! Amazing, beautiful creatures. They attempted to put themselves between the killer whale's and the baby; but unfortunately it was a bit late. They're just beautiful creatures.

There have been numerous recorded instances of whales attacking orcas who are hunting other species has been, and it's thought that they are not actually trying to save the other species so much, but that they instinctively respond to orcas acting aggressive because they are known to also attack humpback calfs, and it's in the whales best interest to make the orca leave the area.

Wow... as heartbreaking as it was to witness the attack (and yes, I am aware, that's nature and la da da) it was truly beautiful and remarkable to see what the humpback whales did. And even more impressive that they stayed there for that long. Truly amazing.

Not the first time humpback whales have intervened and helped out. I seen a humpback whale shield a scubadiver from a bunch of sharks. They didn't realize it until they viewed the footage they recorded. But that humpback whale kept moving the diver out of the way with its fin. The diver didn't know why it kept doing that almost like when you put a child protectively behind you in the face of danger or an attack. Then they saw a bunch of sharks. 🤔

Pretty sure Humpbacks have been known to save or attempt to save many other animals including humans before.
Yes. One saved a lady from a great white. He kept his pectoral fin under the lady (in between her and the shark). She thought the humpback was playing with her and she was so scared. When she got back to the boat they asked her how scared she was to see that huge great white coming for her. She said she never even knew there was a shark. Then she realized the humpback was protecting her, not playing with her!

Love humpbacks! When I fish salmon in fall, I often see humpbacks feeding on bait balls nearby. I can tell a humpback just hearing him blow somewhere nearby. Always stop to observe, take videos, we get excited like kids. They are magnificent!

THIS WILL BLOW YOUR MIND! In high school I remember watching a movie at my biology class, and they made a point about orcas that I never forgot. They suggested that if you look at orcas bone structure they have hind legs that have basically morphed into the pelvic bone since it's not needed. They hypothesized that orcas could be a species wolf that spent a lot of time hunting near and in the water and over millions of years evolved and adapted to live in the water. Think about it? Orcas hunt in packs and launch coordinated attacks like wolves.

I love ORCAS but it breaks my heart when they hunt calfs
This breaks my heart, I know the killer whales got to eat but the process of getting the calve is so long and drawn out. It takes a lot of effort to try to save their babies and so much suffering physically and mentally. The bond between the mother and calve is beyond imaginable. And after seeing humpbacks on a whale watching tour I will always have such a great love for them. Such huge intelligent gentle giants. They were breaching like crazy for us, a mother and it’s calve. The baby was trying to mimic its mother, seriously the best experience I’ve ever had.
In Banderas Bay (México), we have seen this behaviour too. We have seen orcas attacking a female and calf (humpbacks) and then a group of males comming to defend them. We have also seen them chasing false orcas out of the area.
I feel sorry for the baby and the mother but its life. Killer whales have got to eat. This is real nature.

That's not true.
It depends on the eco-type. Atlantic orcas feed on minkie whales all the time. Ross Sea orcas feed on seals. Resident orcas, yes, eat fish. Transient orcas feed on sea lions, fish, and other things.

Animal altruism and unity at its best by those Humpbacks coming to help that poor mother and calf. Sadly, the Orcas won the battle and killed the calf, but still extra props to those Humpbacks for their valiant effort.

Of all the rorquals, I've always considered the Humpbacks rather ungainly in appearance compared to the more sleek, streamlined and faster brethren such as blue, fin or minke whales. This video gives a bit of new found love for the Humpbacks.
There were at least 16 humpback whales that showed up to harass the orcas that day.

Why are orcas still the apex predator?
Well here's the misconceptions appears, apex predator doesn't mean the one that could prey on to something but it means that something couldn't prey on them.
Although a humpback whale can win a match against an orca, still the orca is the apex predator cause the humpback doesn't prey on the orca and just let them go or swim away after the confrontation.

But isn't it interesting that intelligent creatures have compassion in a way that isn't necessarily rational? It's possible that intelligence naturally leads to compassion and empathy, which would be a very good thing in case we ever encounter more advanced alien civilizations. But first, we need to figure out how to communicate with mammals on our own planet, because they're biologically similar to us and more likely to be capable of interacting with us than beings from different solar systems.
Have to wait till the Vulcans get here to communicate with humpbacks. Wahahaha.
