What a nightmare for the mother and calf. I dont know how that calf stayed alive so long. It was only because the mother kept holding it above the water. I've never seen footage like this, even on the best documentaries. Incredible.

You wont find orcas in SA wanting go on a little international trip to join the orcas in the Canada. You not going to have orcas and whale in the same place all the time. It’s like saying why are there still great white sharks if Orca attack them for there liver.

Spectacular and distressing footage. And although 12 minutes long, this is clearly an edit and that calf was still alive as the Orca forced its head into its mouth to get at the tongue. Extraordinary stuff. Even the mother Gray took a pretty serious wound to her flipper. Thanks for not putting it to music.

Yes they certainly are fighters! Mother gray whales try their best to protect their young but there is only so much they are able to do without teeth like Odontocetes (toothed whales) and short pectoral fins compared to another Mysticete (baleen whale) like Humpback whales who have longer pectoral fins with sharp barnacles that can help deter Killer whales.

A huge difference between orcas and other land predators like wolves or lions is that, the land predators eat pretty much everything. Orcas seem very selective. In this case ripping out and eating the tongue of the calf, even when it was evidently alive. In other cases, they eat just the liver of sharks they kill, leaving the rest of the body. They seem such ruthless super killing machines and so intelligent that they kill large creatures, feast on just choice parts and get onto another kill. What is even more extraordinary is that, such a massive and coordinated attack across such an extended duration, all for the tongue of the calf. At this rate, they probably spend most of their time living up to their name - Killer whales.

    • @远山-k3s

To use that famous empathy we humans hold so dear here is very hard to do, imagine this struggle in the context of our everyday human lives, you leave home and go for a walk/swim with you're newborn or baby to the local park when suddenly a roaming pack of 5 to 6 basically Carnivourous Rhinocerus start charging at you're child trying to bludgeon it to death, while basically paying almost no attention to you the Mother frantically beating them with anything as they come from every direction at once relentlessly to the point you're so beat up and exhausted yourself you have to leave you're baby and take off or you both die....and you go home and just move on with you're life. Mother greys are somewhat undersized in the protection column to really intimidate transient pods. Humpback and/or Sperm cows are much more threatening and anytime a bull from those species come along, fight over. Especially sperm bulls. There is video of how aggressive they are with orcas and how scared the orca pod becomes on sight of one. Of course blue whales are pretty much left alone. Too much size and a massive tail that could kill other large cetaceans.

While this footage only shows them feeding on the tongue, it is incorrect to say that is all they eat. The family pod will feed on the carcass for several days and whatever is left over will be food for scavengers like the Black-footed albatross.

It’s sad to watch a beautiful creature die in such a brutal way I understand it life but it’s still sad. I have become more sensitive to these things since I got a dog 2 years ago before I would think that’s nature at work. Now i realize this earth is a very scary & dangerous place. Maybe the Orcas could detect something was wrong with the baby whale so probably going to die anyway.

The struggle for the survival of these whales is moving. There were two warriors! The mother tried until the end to free the baby from the clutches of death. Often these Orcars don't even eat the baby whale, they kill to kill

Actually that is untrue, the Killer whales are hunting the gray whale to feed their family pod. They feed on the carcass for several days and any small chunks of blubber and flesh left behind from the pod goes to feed scavenger species like Black-footed albatross and small organisms on the ocean floor.

They eat the whole carcass, not just the tongue. Typically the family pod finishes the carcass over a span of a few days, but for this particular predation encounter, they finished it in one day. Any little bits that are left after they feed becomes food for scavengers such as Black-footed albatross!

If I check the comments, most of the time people like the apex predator of the oceans like orca the killerwhale..also called " the black death". But in order to known and to see that they are the most wild agressive apex predators of the sea..to kill so horribly the most giant species like the gray whale..the humpbackwhale and also the blue whale..is absolutely horrifying to watch and to known what they are capable of. Also killerwhales have also been murdered humans and drowned them under and hit and ruined different boats on stormy wild seas as well. In a very short while there will not be found such amazing creatures like the grey whale and spermwhale and humpbackwhale in any ocean nomore. Even not speaking about how many whales are killed each year by bloody humans itself!. I will never watch these kind of horrifying videos on youtube nomore. Cause the humanrace is a diiscrase itself. Cause humans are destroying this earth for many centuries already. Only killing..torturing and destroying what belongs to this earth is their goal in life. Soulles human beings who likes sensation the most!.

Whales are bastards much worse than orcas, they eat their prey alive.
Слышат и убегают как можно дальше, счастливые, что попало на другого xD
Киты это сволочь намного хуже касаток, они едят свою добычу живьем.

Baleen whales swallow their prey alive. Thousands of fish and small creatures die burning alive in their stomach acid.
    Karma. I cheer on orcas.
BTW, how hard transient orcas must work to even have a meal. Imagine that everyday you must do such hunt to eat the breakfast.
