Killer Whales Prey On Gray Whale Calf, Humpbacks Interfere; Monterey Bay CA
At least 16 humpback whales harassed 11 killer whales after the killer whales killed a gray whale calf in Monterey Bay, CA. Although the calf died within a few minutes after we arrived, humpbacks continued to harass the killer whales for over 6 hours: could they have been trying to protect the dead calf? NEW RECORD: This is the longest known interaction between feeding killer whales and mobbing humpbacks. The tightly grouped humpbacks made loud trumpeting sounds, rolled and slashed their pectoral flippers and flukes, and closely approached (and even chased) the killer whales. The humpbacks were still interacting with the killer whales when we left them near sunset.

Humpback whales are altruism
Radiolab podcast sent me here. AMAZING! The podcast was incredible and gave this video so much depth than I could ever imagine. My heart ached watching this video knowing what was happening. I have much deeper appreciation for humpbacks more than ever. I can’t wait to see them in real life one day ☝️
The humpback strategy may be twofold. Aside from the obvious defense of their young, by helping other prey species they are trying to deny easy access of a food source for the killer whales in order to hamper the predator's long term survival,
Just listened to the radio lab episode you all were on. This is crazy!
This is way better than wasting money at sea world
That was awesome!!! I know that humpbacks are very much protective of other whales and that was amazing to see! I'm sure that there's going to be a lot of comments in here about how sad it is and the "killer whales" are so mean and horrible, etc, however, to me Orcas are so beautiful and strong and extremely intelligent! Definitely my favorite whale! Question though, if you can answer it for me, were one of the male Orcas known as 168 I believe? He has a very tall dorsal fin that kinda curves at the top.....
@@alisaschulman-janiger3799 thanks so much for your reply! Okay, so it is a different male then. I know that there's a male called 168 or 168B but I am not exactly sure what pod he's from, but they're spotted there a lot as well. His dorsal fin curves quite a bit too. I love watching them and could do it all day. Thanks again for getting back to me and obviously for sharing your amazing videos 💕
Clash of titans
I wish I could kill all orcas
I’ve always hated Orcas. We should be allowed to hunt eat them. Hunt them for fun and eat if you want.
The Humpbacks said “Messin with that lady and her Baby; I bet y’all don’t eat in peace!” This is amazing behavior!
Love those Orcas, they mean business and killers like humans
i feel like killer whales are smart enough to know you dont take a fight you dont LB for LB win. water restricts large movement but the level of power in a whales body simply to move that body is enough to gash an orca near in two if a tail thrash connects. let alone a mature humpback could breach at any point, bringing unimaginable destruction to anything underneath it. i believe it was 70 orca that managed to hunt a blue whale so it would take no short of 30-40 to take a mature humpback
I was wondering watching the video, if an adult humpback whale could kill an orca, if she wants to, thank you for the info !
Có ai dịch tiếng VIỆT NAM ko?
There is a video of a deer coming to the aid of a rabbit and it stomps the hawk to the point that you almost feel bad....
Poor calf.
Amazing documentary. Hours must have transcurred with plenty of emotion, as both species displayed their habits, sounds, ways to protect themselves. Thanks so much for giving whale lovers like me, this great opportunity. At least I can see them by videos!
good for all parties that tried to help that baby whale. i hate seeing young animals being hurt, just kills you inside
The killer whales broke the ocean mammals law!
Wolves of the sea
Good calm narrator. It makes a change from American woman screaming OMG throughout!
😂
Whale & whale fight club.
I believe the grey whale understands the humpback whales are trying to help and I know the grey whales appreciate it 😊 So heart warming to see one animal species protecting another 🤗
To me this is evidence that the Humpback is capable of high order thinking. They are protecting the gray whale and are now upset at the killing of the grey whale calf.
Orcas go after humpback calves, too. This may be a learned or emotional response due to orcas being baby killers.
@@K8theKind Yeah, they've experienced, too, so they empathize and hate the orcas for it.
1:54 😡 that sounds about right for them... the mothers are "devils"...for stopping whalers from harpooning their babies...
Ocras respect other ocras, humbacks, and man...and diseases and inbreeding kills them
Super interesting Humback whales will go out of their way to help Gray Whales ext from Orcas Attacking a baby whale. Seen it a few times. 9 times out of 10 the Orcas will give up if there’s a couple adults. Too much energy expended. However 1 and they always win. Kinda brutal watching when it’s a lesson for the younger Orcas and not to kill. Mother’s Day incident, but mother and baby actually survived. I don’t know how they did. The baby was rammed so many times. Went on for hours. I think of Tilicum the age he was captured, he was learning these hunting behavior’s. He never forgot it. I Believe he never forgot his family! If they had put him back into the waters with his family that are still alive, they would’ve accepted him.
I understood from the video that the humpback whales were preventing the orca from feeding on the dead calf that they had killed earlier.
Very fascinating video.
Why are Gray Whales always alone with the baby?are they not Family oriented like HUMPBACK WHALES?
Baleen whales such as gray whales and humpbacks do not travel in family units, unlike killer whales - where in many cases offspring stay with their moms for their entire lives. Gray whale moms usually travel just with their calf, but occasionally with others. Humpback moms also are seen only with their calves. No cetaceans (whales, dolphins, porpoises) ever travel as a family units - with Dad, mom, and offspring; males do not linger after mating.
This was very boring because we didn't get to see anything with the humpbacks going after the orcas
Damnit, am I really watching this video again??!
I might get a Walking humpback whale
And we should look to have drone teams that can protect blue whales against killer whale attack for example.
@@robinsonray6766 eh no, lol. Orcas are known for killing every type of whale (except bull sperm whales) and has been recordef hunting em down.
Or just sterelize you from the gene pool
To protect the whales we need to control hunt the killers whales (Orcas), like we do with wolves in Scandinavia.
No sir. If we simply don't hunt whales at all, and start farm fishing more, than they will all be fine. Blue whales prospered without human intervention
Then cut your balls since you're going to create more mouths to feed and kill more animals for meat
@@EternalEmperorofZakuul good advise
poor video
If I had a gun, those killer whales would be no more.
Yeah but then you'd get shot by the police for pointing gun at people
Thank you for posting. This is the most educational account of this event so far . My own "theory" is that we are witnessing what I simply call INTER-SPECIES INTERVENTION . The one species will attack one of their own "enemies " in defence of another prey in instinctive response - both maternal and territorial . Examples would include the very famous house cat who drove off a dog attacking an autistic child. Another is the lion pride who scared off human abductors of a 12 year old girl-why- same reasons as above- the men looked and behaved like poachers who are a major threat. A leopard may take a baby gazelle from a troop of baboons and then let it go , due to a confusion of different instincts. Other examples are Hippos intervening with crocodiles preying on wildebeest , dolphins against sharks to protect humans etc , whales against Orca to protect seals, dolphins etc That is my " little theory " I don't mind if you don't agree - we are all getting an education . . .What do you think ?
Altruism. It is one of God's rarest and cruelest gifts. It is inherited, but for my family it's not dominant. Mine comes from my father's side, though it is very hard to pinpoint in him personally, but with years of careful studying... My sister has none, zero. Mother has none; both are Christian, "good" people, I dearly love but bc of my instinct; not bc I believe they are kind ppl. But I have one female cousin on paternal side who has it; it is not debilitating to her like mine, but it certainly affects her personality and shapes her life hugely. I may also be seeing it in her brother's oldest daughter, almost ten now. I don't see her much, but I think I have heard of some kindness in her... We are really just this fall starting to study the lineage in depth due to my progressive resentment of the trait and my impossibly progressive cynicism. I am now "homicidal" intermittently. Earlier today reading the newspaper I became enraptured in last year's stolen car with handicapped dog in back seat; car found 4 days later, dog had been killed in back seat. So now what to do? I contacted the involved parties, detective, etc. for updates... but that's not a good idea just in case the person was caught and I kill them. So now I'm on the dark web. I won't elaborate. So where to draw the line? Today was Christmas; an exciting seemingly normal holiday. But I read the paper and now this is my day. Tomorrow something else. That's altruism. It ruins my life. I am 40. At 7 my first controversial dog litter recon rescue. Then vegan. ALF 100%. Thanks for letting me rant. No more internet today, third time saying that.
And what else? 4 am last night, "Louisa" -gecko who lives outside my window at night, shows back up after not being seen for maybe 3 days. I had just hopelessly resolved to pray for her, feeling maybe it was silly. So I just got idk, zoomy(?) happy and was bouncing and praising God for maybe 7 minutes, dogs jumping around too; and then I started crying; I really thought she was dead, so many scenarios and why would she be gone for 3 whole days? Louisa does not even know I exist.
@@Rebeccaturnerrescue -Thanks for sharing that sweet story. God made creatures to be our companions. It's ok to be grateful your gecko came back! I could tell you story upon story of animals that brightened my days, helped me go on, & how my heart broke when they left. Corrie ten Boom was grateful when some ants came into her cell at Auschitz! God can send his creatures to encourage us.
Yes, how much behaviour and communication is shared across whale species ?
Drone footage is what would of been good here
This was 2012: no drone available for filming at that time in Monterey Bay.
I know, can't wait to see all the new experiences to come in the near future!
Isn't it funny how far we've come in just 30 years. Back in the 80's we had wait until we got home to find out anything, now days you can find out 24/7/365
All Orca still treat all humans as if they're whalers and thank Hell for that pact or the ocean would certainly be a more deadly place to film. Wolves are smart enough lead a hunter to a kill for easy shares but an Orca given a Harpoon would make like a human and slaughter a herd for just their tongues and leave the rest floating as repayment.
Awesome Dedication from this Souls and Team Group to the Gray, Humpback and Orcas Behavior, giving Us the opportunity to Observe, Learnd, Watch and Feel this Unique Feelings to the Ones in the other side of the screen... Humpbacks probably heard the distress call from the mother. I wonder where was mothers pod family
Most whales are solitary. Dolphins, sperm whales, and narwhals are social, (I'm 100% sure I'm missing some... like porpoises, maybe?) There are tons of beaked whales and a lot are solitary.
The orcas won’t eat the whole baby wale just the tounge . There such proficient hunters they can be picky
wow it would be so easy to shoot those killer whales from the boat . i have seen people do it before . they soon leave
Did you film this with a potato?🤔
Ah hahaha! Brightened my night up!

Only if u had a drone
