As a teenager, I saw Whitney Houston live on her tour in 1991. I was not prepared for how powerful and beautiful her voice was. An unforgettable experience.
*The vocal elasticity, the vocal control, the melisma, the song interpretation, the velvety-honey like tone that blankets her voice from top to bottom, the diction, the vocal power, the vibrato, the operatic head notes, the resonance, the breath control, the vocal sustainability, the vocal clarity, the vocal emotiveness, the delivery, the stage presence...THE VOICE* Whitney *'The Vocal Tsunami'* Houston...... Whitney *'Diamond Vocal Cords'* Houston.
Gents. This is a very important song to my family. My older brother was a professional baseball player and it was absolutely the culmination of a dream he worked very hard for. For his birthday about 30 years ago the family put together a video of photos and film footage from his time on the mound. This song was played in the background. He missed his second child's birth because he was in a game way across the country, so he sacrificed alot and spent a lot of years in the minors making no money and sleeping in crappy buses in medium size towns. After retiring from baseball, he became a TV sportscaster and his family is now very comfortable - and his son was a professional ball player too. We are so proud of them. This song reminds me of his victories in life and career. thanks.
I'm in the age group of those who watched this Live when it originally aired, and naturally it was the opener of the show. And I remember very well this being the song of the Olympics that year, hence the footage during the opening. She is so amazing in her vocal control that her performance literally comes off as EFFORTLESS! For me, this is, and will always be Whitney's best performance ever on film. Ever. The emotion, the range, it delivers on all. While I am appreciative this performance finally made it into one of your Whitney Live Weeks, you really should throw in the towel and realize that for any "Whitney Houston Live Week" , this performance should ALWAYS be #1. While she has given other notable fantastic performances, no other touches this. Not by a mile.
As someone in that age group, I can say it’s too difficult to say this is the top live performance. There’s the One Song performance in front of the first president Bush, then there’s The Greatest Love Of All (Wembley) performance, there’s Do You Hear What I Hear? performance, there’s wayyy to many more of name to just pick 1 as number one. And let’s not forget about the audios that we have like the I Am Changing (San Francisco 1986)..the there’s the He, I Believe (Japan 1990) audio…Whitney singing live was just out of this universe. She was truly phenomenal.
It was suppose to be the USA team song for the seoul Olympics 1988 hence the montage at the beginning...she was and always will be the voice for me...love ur reactions guys...here from New Zealand 😊🙏🇳🇿
At this point in her Career, Whitney already had seven consecutive #1 hits in the US, including worldwide smash pop ballads like: 'Greatest Love of All' 'Saving All My Love for You' 'Didn't We Almost Have It All' 'Where Do Broken Hearts Go' 'All at Once'
When someone is a master of her instrument, she can do anything with it. Just like a pianist who can play Bach and rock. She could sing anything. I’ll always be in awe of her talent.
I so agree with you guys, especially what Mike was saying at the end. witnessing her perform in her heyday always feels like seeing a glimmer of God, there's no other way to describe the feeling. she was so truly blessed with a special talent. and I feel so fortunate to be able to bear witness through these video archives to what she achieved on stage even though we weren't yet born when it happened.
So glad there’s a FULL Whitney Houston Live week! No one else deserves it more. I really hope her cover of “A Song for You” is included as well as “All the Man I Need” from her Welcome Home Heroes concert. She hits notes in those performances that are simply STUNNING!
I’m so happy you did this one. I thought this would be No1 on the last Whitney week. The power of her voice echoes through the room and through the tv! It’s actually insane. Can’t wait to see what else was chosen
I agree with Mike. You can hear and see Whitney perform over and over but the truth of her power, talent and gloriousness just hits every time as if it´s the very first experience. It´s a beautiful thing to be able to have the opportunity. Great reaction!
Whitney... the Queen of making you feel like "It can't get ay better than this..." then she goes and does something to make it even better! I have been a fan of her for as long as I can remember and have watched these performances over and over again, probably thousands of hours and it STILL amazes me! I realized this past week... in hindsight she seems surreal. Like, it's hard to believe someone, a human, can produce such beautiful, soul stirring sounds AND be THAT beautiful! She existed and shared this gift... and look how the world treated her.
In 1989, Whitney already had a few records under her belt : 7 consecutive #1 songs on billboard hot 100, and two #1 albums and the best selling debut album of all time.
This is the reason we should not compare two different superior singers. Before watching this reaction video I was listening to Lucy Thomas sing this actual song, RUclips autoplay played this next, they are two different style of singers, both the best you would hear. Yes! I love them both, and I am not going to say one was better than the other. Thanks for the reaction video. Very good.
In the 80's we enjoyed Michael Jackson, Whiney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Steve Wonder, Elton John, Billy Joel, Queen, Patty LaBelle, Tina Turner, Prince, Aerosmith and so on. You had to be outstanding to impress a crowd.
Whitney is the greatest of all time, she had the voice, beauty and charisma….but most of all when she sings she makes it personal because it’s never generic, she’s in the moment with you….and u never know how she will interpret the song, because she sings it as she feels it at that moment, it’s in the tempo changes, in her conducting the band with her hands, it’s in words she emphasizes, it can be her body movement or facial expression….but all theses things added up…..it’s all raw talent
Whitney didn't love this anthemic song that much - it's a little slow and formulaic - so she just took the stage in that dress and wig that she was too young for and showed the world that she was the GREATEST singer in the game. She had two giant hit albums before this - but this night is when your grandparents set up and said why are there bells going off?? The resonance of her voice just RINGS out! She uses her mixed voice and belts and vibrato to near perfection. Her tone is rich and full and gorgeous. The power of her voice fills the theatre and elevates the song to the rafters. Oh, she not just a pop girlie with some gospell inflections? Whitney made Barbra Streisand sound like a mouse and Aretha seem scratchy. And she's THAT beautiful and poised and confident in her gift? Whitney Houston was a miracle. And yet, this was not yet the peak of her greatness!
""Whitney made Barbra Streisand sound like a mouse and Aretha seem scratchy......." I love this brilliant comment that I'm going to use whenever someone dares to compare the aforementioned to THE VOICE.
I thought you're being shady until I realized it's true 😭🤣 Shady but 100% true Barbara sounds as nasal as Celine Dion no offense Aretha Franklin sounds as pushy as Patti LaBelle compared to Whitney Houston in most cases Aretha is the greatest in her time Whitney Houston is arguably the greatest vocalist of all time 👑💥💎❤️
This was probably her third or fourth Grammy performance, and she had a string of number one hits by then, I doubt anyone in the audience didn't already know her and what she could do with her voice.
in 1988 when you were big, everyone knew and heard you. it was fame on a different level. Everyone had the same radio and TV. not like today where there are so many different places to consume music and entertainment and it's easier to not have heard of someone
"I wanna Dance with Somebody...a pop, dance song"...that's right a song and video she completely disliked and never wanted to record it. . But hey! - its a great song and gets everyone up on the dance floor!. Personally, my favourite live vocal performance was "I have Nothing" - South Africa>
You Should react to Whitney Houston - A Song For You, Greatest Love of All (Welcome Home Heroes) , Don't Cry For Me (Commitment For Life VII AIDS Benefit Concert) & This Day (Live From This is my Life Special) That's the one of the best live of her, I suggested this because I'm a biggest fan of her until now, I hope you guys reacted to it!!!!!!!, hope you guys see this!!!!!!
Wait! Wait! I thought paying and requesting full week videos have been stopped?! Has the rules changed again?! Cus I have a few list I’m ready to pay up for myself sir’s 😭😭😭
It hasn't changed. They still have a pretty big backlog to catch up on from the time it was still possible (they mentioned at the time that only future requests wouldn't be possible). I believe Ryan requested and donated for this list in early July.
If you don't want to do the traditional music videos, react to her singing the national anthem to open the 1991 Super Bowl, complete with the flyover of F16 jets at the end. The patriotism and pride just strikes such a contrast to today, where Trump has convinced half the country to hate themselves and their own country.
She really had it all : beauty, class, talent, charisma. Nobody can ever touch her, she is the blueprint. RIP Whitney
Agreed
This is not just her best Grammy performance, it is the best Grammy performance ever…..
🎉Yes!
As a teenager, I saw Whitney Houston live on her tour in 1991. I was not prepared for how powerful and beautiful her voice was. An unforgettable experience.
You lucky man. She was at her peak then.

"vocal tsunami" is so accurate
The Voice sums it all LOL 👑❤️✨💥

what you said!
Yes! Yes! Yesssss!!!
there are singers, we could categorise as good, better, best...than there is our Whitney by a distant sweet mile ahead! One class act
The theme song for the 1988 Olympics 😊❤
So when you you see Whitney in her live shows looking up to the sky or roof. She's feeling and talking to God. Embracing that moment. Her words.
Listening to Whitney always makes you feel like you are levitating! 😊😊😊😊😊
I just can't get over Whitney Houston, the voice, the beauty is unmatched

What a beautiful anecdote.
Definitely the best singer the world has ever seen ad heard. no doubt.
Quite simply the greatest to ever do it. Whitney Houston.

THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER WHITNEY NIPPY HOUSTON!
The way she sings on top of the orchestra…….straight talent. There’s one other singer that I’m aware that can do that is Brian McKnight.
We need a Brian Top 5
In the 80's we enjoyed Michael Jackson, Whiney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Steve Wonder, Elton John, Billy Joel, Queen, Patty LaBelle, Tina Turner, Prince, Aerosmith and so on. You had to be outstanding to impress a crowd.
Guys, this was 1989, and trust me, by that point everyone knew who Whitney was and her songs.
They knew what to expect by that period
I like the Seoul 1988 Olympics montage at the start. This song really fits for a sports theme!
Wait... I think she actually sang this at the Olympics that year? USA! USA! USA!
YES!
Amazing performance! I knew this one would make the list, but thought it would be #1. :) I love all her live performances, such a talent.
We need more raw talent like this today.
To be there live would have been amazing. Perhaps the single greatest live performance in her career.
Just the voice ❤
This was so good! And I do understand the analogy of winning a game and going out to lunch with your friends to celebrate.

This was the theme song for the Olympics the year it was released, which is why Olympic athletes were featured in the video montage at the beginning.

This is the song feom Olimpic Games, Seul 1998, the song hit Top 5 on Billboard Hot 100 Falling 1988.
This song is the companion piece to We Are The Champions. Anthemic.
Better than in a movie, this epic song was the theme song for the 1988 Olympic Games.
Does not get more epic than this.
10:11 Natalie Cole and paula Abdul

There was no one in this audience that didnt know who she was.
Possibly the greatest Grammy performance ever. but one problem I have is that she was speak-singing the song vs. singing the notes.
Greatest Grammy's performance after Aretha's, 'Bridge Over Troubled Waters.'
haha. NOBODY in this audience or on the planet in 1989 didn't know who Whitney Houston was. And this was pre Bodyguard.
At this point She already had 7 consecutive #1 hits, a record She still holds 35 years later.
If I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY was already released
Yes I 100% agree she's already known at least to all of the developed countries
🔥🔥🔥
Not in a movie but was produced for the Olympics in 1988 Seoul
