Such a shame you couldn’t play the PC version of this game. It is by FAR the best, it’s basically just the ps1 but without a lot of the problems you mentioned

I played the ps1 version so much as a kid seeing all those nicktoons in one place was like a dream come true for a 90s kid back then.
    Good job on the review

The pc version is the same as the ps1 version, but the ai is not as aggressive and the stun time when hit by an item has been reduced. I like how they use the voice lines they were taken from the shows instead of making new lines. It's a cheep, but effective way to get voices. I wished nick kart racers 2 did the same thing. It adds charm to the game.

Whenever I played the PS1 version as a kid I never any memory cards with room so I'd play up to one of the later levels, a Rugrats themed one iirc, that I couldn't beat and just quit there every time. Years later I finally Googled who the Mystery Rider was, and gotta say I like the idea I had as a kid that he was Chuckie better.

Like others have said, play the PC version (it's pretty easy to find, and it's abandonware)! It's the PS1 version without the weird wall physics, long stun periods after getting hit by an item and rubberband AI. I played it so much as a kid, it's one of my favourite kart racers depite the lack of polish compared to Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing. The only gripe I had with it was that the racers all played exactly the same. No character had a higher top speed, turned better or had faster acceleration, but I guess that was an intentional design choice so kids could just pick their favourite character and not have to deal with any disadvatages that character might bring with them. I also agree with you on how the boost meter shouldn't drain if you don't use it immediately, it would be a nice way to make up for lost time after crashing or getting hit by something.

I played the PC version (I have videos of it on my channel) and it actually has some notable differences from the PS1 version. Namely in the way you're punished by items and the AI. Items seem to punish you in the way that you spin out and the location you end up in afterwards is entirely random. Of course, this can fuck you over immensely. On the other hand, I've noticed the AI is less rubberbandy, and most races I lost due to bad item RNG or the tracks themselves (you said the Hey Arnold track is bad but dear god the 2nd Wild Thornberrys track is a nightmare). The graphics are of higher quality than the PS1 version as well. (it can be a bitch to run at times on newer systems though (I used a program called DGVoodoo to get it to run respectably on Windows 10 and for the most part it works out well) and sometimes it comes out looking downright hideous and unfinished)
Also, hot take but the GBA version of Nicktoons Racing is probably my favorite kart racer for that console. I know people will sing the praises of Super Circuit (I just can't get used to the controls in this game sorry), Konami Krazy Racers, and Crash Nitro Kart but honestly I dunno why but this version of Nicktoons Racing just hits that sweetspot for me.

I was a Cartoon Network kid growing up - literally didn't have Nickelodeon on TV - but I was also a PC kid growing up, so I took whatever racing game I could.
This one was fun but maaaaan some of those walls/corners/obstacles were super annoying.
Fun fact that shows the differences people can have in opinions: I really liked the simple black kart that was, in my eyes, "without an ugly character sticking out of it". I'd happily play a kart racing game with just cool cars, no people.
Speaking of all of this - PC also had Re-Volt, which I played and grew up with. It kinda blows these games out of the water.

The reason why you can’t get progress under 4th place is because that’s how kart racing games were structured back in the day. Just look at Mario kart 64 you can only get 4th or higher and it it’s possible to get 8th place in a gp but it’s even harder to get that then it is to win

Also despite the PS1 game coming out in 2001, the PC original release was from 2000, predating As Told By Ginger by a couple months, and Invader Zim by longer. Rocket Power prob did not start airing until midway though development.

Actually, we now know the 3d version of nicktoons racing released on the PC back on September 18, 2000. Ginger, fairly oddparents, and Zim all hadn't premiered yet. Still Wierd that the devs excluded Rocket Power since that show at the time was actually doing slightly better than SpongeBob in ratings. And it's a show all about extreme sports.

I’ll say for another attempt to cash in on the mascot crossover racing genre at the time, Nicktoons racing on the PlayStation actually wasn’t that bad. Yes, the game definitely didn’t age well and it does feel archaic, but I think this game is good. I mean, unique tracks that represent the shows perfectly, a decent roster for the time, and catchy soundtracks that are not that bad. I will say the graphics are a bit outdated tho, but I think it’s still an alright Mario Kart expy.
I’d personally rate this game a 7.5/10. Not a bad game per say, but it definitely is a bit dated.
