An overview of Darklands (1E): A war game nobody has talked about

- This. Was. LONG overdue for me to make. But it's done, to whatever quality I've finished it on.
Darklands is a miniature war game that's a mix of history and fiction, that has some small attention but only ever on its miniatures. I wanted to talk about the game for a while and now you can see what it's about. Kinda. I really wasn't as positive in this as I should have or wanted to be, there's just a not that irks me but also a lot that interests me. Regardless, hopefully this review (?) will help spread the word on it in some way (and hopefully doesn't run it into the ground).

Being a play tester for 2ed I can confirm that it is much simpler to play but does not lose any of the elements that players enjoyed about 1ed.
It plays faster, is easier to muster a kindred and get your models onto the battlefield.
2ed is being refined all the time, and there is due to be a 3ed rewrite in the next year with better mustering, and easier game play and options.
Check it out.
Never played a war game,
Live in a small island in japan so not a lot of community to work with,
But goddamn was this review funny as fuck.
Only found this because I was looking for reviews of the old crpg darklands.
You should do more reviews, this is gold.
2nd edition is almost here now and it's refined a lot of stuff while still keeping a lot of the crunch and depth that first attracted me to the game. There is a fairly busy community where I live in England and we have regular tourney's throughout the year. Personally, I love the game and it's my main one at the moment.
There's nothing like a giant monster bearing down on a shieldwall and grabbing a bunch of men then punting them back into the unit, or stomping on them. While the men try to hold formation and poke it with spears and higher skill.
It's a surprisingly kinetic ruleset.
As someone who lives in Ohio, I can, in fact, confirm that it is not real
What's ohio?
Sorry did you say: "GW's bullshit AS OF LATE" ..."AS OF LATE"??? Where have you been? lol
They are lovely figures. But they are very expensive and I’ve never known anyone buy or play with them. So it’s a big investment for a game you might never find an opponent for.
I believe the Ysians might be a reference to the celts of Cornwall, in current day South West England. The celtic word for Cornwall is Kernyw, kinda like Kurnos. Just a thought. Great video!
I'm a bit late to this, but yeah, the Ysians are also called the "Ker-Ys". This is a reference to both Cornwall (Kernow) and the city of Ys or Ker-Ys in Brittany in France. Brittany was settled by Cornish emigrants, actually, though as far as I know this happened later in the real world, but whatever. The point is that the Ysian Drunes are basically Slaaneshi Cornish Flesh-shaper druid alchemists.
Nice review, thanks for taking the time to make it and help out prospective players. I actually like a few of the things that bothered you though. The numbering system and specific terminology (e.g. labelling a unit making a move action is an "attacking unit"), really remind me of many of those older hex and counter wargames and I think that's where the influence for that bit came from. I seem to remember advanced squad leader distinguishing between "moving vehicle", a vehicle that is "in motion" and a "moving target", and I think it uses a similar numbering system throughout the rules. I haven't been able to get a game in either (nobody I know has so much as heard of it) but the miniatures and theme alone mean I'm still building my collection. Hopefully I'll actually get to play one day...
There is a new edition that just came out
Best review for this game I've seen. The rule book is perhaps the most painful rule book ever created. Convoluted rules and language, lots of page flipping, an absurd numbering system that would drive someone with a librarian science degree mad. Absurdly expensive miniatures.. though the Stls they released help with this but 129 pounds for 14 minis? in cheap resin, 10 of which are basic soldiers, someones been huffing them fumes lol, even GW is better priced for better material. I want to like this game but its just got to much weirdness and amateur production values that drag my enthusiasm down quickly. Hard pass on either edition because second edition didn't clean any of this up. I can't even tell if its actually complex or just so conveluted it makes my brain hurt reading it.
This has just shown up for no apparent reason and I watched it because the name of the game was vaguely familiar. As it’s a year old and second edition has been out a while, have you got around to reading it? Is there / will there be a review?
After posting the above I immediately saw that you do have a video about 2e. I was then placed in a quandary as to whether to delete my comment or reply to it. As you can see, I chose the latter course. I feel that this was a perfectly valid option though I accept that others may disagree. I will now watch the second video and consider commenting on that, subject to the outcome of the contest between vague interest and mounting tiredness that is presently guiding my actions (and / or inaction, as the case may be).
Actually the question may be moot as my battery is now at 1% and I’m not in much better fettle myself. I am, however, glad we had this conversation.
It came with dirt?!
I didn't even know there was a game.
You forgot the rat boys the Vras they are the reall french man
I hate resin, I dig the metal miniatures.
Oathmark FTW.
the c in Anglecynn is pronounced as k, it's literally anglekin, as in english people.
Laughing my ass off great review!
Sounds like a heartbreaker game.
