pattern requirements:
backing fabric
batting (if you are doing this on a domestic machine I recommend fusible)
thread
Scissors
new needle
and lots of scraps
This kind of scrappy is not for me. My OCD cannot cope. But, that said, I admire how fearless you are to try something new. Thanks so much for sharing this with us all.

Yes, I never could 'embrace' cutting scraps into many size squares. It just didn't 'fit' me.
Also, I developed Tendinitis in my dominant elbow.
So, then I couldn't rotary cut anything.
I stumbled on to someone talking about using an Accuquilt cutter to bust up their stash.
It made sense!
I now have the Big Electric cutter + many dies.
The beauty of the system is that you can cut 6 layers of cotton fabric @ a time, very easily + accurately!
I cut such shapes as: Half Hexie, Tumbler, 2.5 x 4.5 rectangle(×2), 4.5 x 8.5" rectangle , 2.5 " Square (cuts 9 @ a time x 6 layers =54 squares!) I can use smallish to medium to large scraps for these dies. I put the too small + irregular pieces in my crumb quilt bins to make rail fence blocks.
I have containers for each shape. As I cut them, I roughly sort them by color as I put them in the bin.
So, eventually, I'll be able to grab a container a make a quilt.
I am happily busting up my scraps into very usable shapes.
Yes..OCD rules my quilting life..l enjoy it..when l wade into a mountain of scrap l mean business..and get er done till the next one and so on…🇨🇦

oh my gosh! - I saw this done on PBS Nancy Zieman's TV sewing show about 30 years ago but the woman showing it used tulle or nylon net I think (maybe she did use organza it was so long ago) - I always thought it would be beautiful to gather all the solid colored scraps and "trap" them under a white or black lace so the colors would show up with the lace design on them - she didn't use a long arm

When did the first long arm machines come out?
the lady didn't do it on a long arm from what I remember but I think long arms have been around for quite a while but not for home use

That is shadow quilting. It was very popular in the1980's when I was working at a quilt store. I still have organza from that time, lol.

I worry about how the organza holds up over time. Have you seen any issues? It would be such a shame to have the organza wear out over all those memories.
@@sherip1270 Worse case scenario the organza which is polyester, breaks down. But the quilting will hold all of it down and the raw edges would chennile. If the organza does break down I can always quilt it to death to hold all those scraps down. Normally the cotton fibers break down before the polyester organza ever will. @@MyQuiltProjects I did something like this but the scraps were cut into appliqué shapes, covered with voile and stitches added on top. It was all done by hand but only pillow size so not too insane. That was 1986 and the voile on my pillow is just now wearing out. Too many trips through the laundry. lol. I’ve used it daily for 30+ years. Can’t wait to see yours finished. I’ve subbed so I won’t miss anything. 😊

New subscriber. Just came on my feed. Love the idea. Was thinking if you had you scraps sorted by color, you could start at a corner of your quilt with one color fan it out with the next color that would look good beside it. When you look at it from your opposite bottom corner, the whole quilt would have rows of colors. Just another idea. Will continue to watch you. You’re excitement is contagious.

Great video, Dawn! I love this idea. You have got my wheels turning.
I just found you and this is a brilliant reminder of textile quilts I've seen on RUclips years ago. The ones I've seen on Sewing with Nancy the woman even added left over hem tapes, rick rack, all her scrap and cut threads, fake flowers and many other misc bits and pieces. Organza was layed over the top to encapsulate everything and a grid was sewn. You could use this fabric for quilts, bags, jackets, backpacks or whatever as you would for any fabric. No glueing, just placement and a top layer. I do think tulle might be an issue because it can melt if an iron is too hot. Not sure about the organza? I think I'll try a doll quilt and just keep it with my laundry awhile to be washed and dried to see how it holds up.
This is brilliant for scraps and those long ago memories of watching Nancy and past projects.
I've seen it done with cut pieces of just embroidery threads from projects sewn and randomly spread between washable stabilizer, sewing a tight grid of random decorative stitches and made into scarves. Once the stabilizer is washed away you are left with a delicate fabric of left over threads. Might have to trim some threads away but this scrappy idea reminded me of these threads I've saved in sandwich bags for years.
I wish we were neighbors!!! I found a new favorite RUclipsr however. Thanks for this and your brilliant ideas. You made this your own by doing a quilt that's not just a lap quilt or wall hanging. I've used my scraps for miniature quilts I give to my emergency 911 depts for kids in crisis. A stuffed animal or doll added makes a perfect present and lowers much anxiety and fear. Even in adults... God blessed you and I'm humbled to have found you. Babs near Tombstone, AZ
I am thinking about a coat with this technique. My schedule right now will not allow it, maybe next year. I had another commenter tell me they saw this on Sewing with Nancy. I just tried the same but was not so specific in my colour layout, so I have a lot of yellow scraps in one area but overall my quilt turned out awesome, thanks for helping me manage my scraps this way. Love it! And yes I used organza on top, actually light blue organza because I got it on sale at Fabricville for $2 per meter.

Absolutely! Kawandi are amazing!
I roll my strips into a roll using a wooden school ruler. Those rolls stack nicely in take away food containers. Which stack on top of each other. From smaller lengths I piece them end to end or side by side. I make funky shopping totes using all the various scrap rolls. If tiny scraps are continually being used as leader enders they stop being tiny and start getting used.

You could do quilt as you go with smaller blocks. A little sewing to piece the blocks together but more manageable on a domestic machine.

Thanks for sharing. I'm going to do one of these in QAYG blocks and NOT use the organza. I like the frayed raw edges, and if one spot fails, I can just add a piece on top. I think I'll put my blocks together in a raggedy quilt so that I will have even more frayed edges. I'm excited about this!

I love scraps I make scrappy quilts.
I might try this on a smaller scale, like 12 or16" blocks on batting then do the quilt as you go method with bias sashings in between them, using the water soluble interfacing idea. We will see what that lloks like.
This will be a scrap masterpiece when you get done!

This looks very similar to what i seen a designer do here in the uk . Using the voile or organza she uses her rotary blade and shreds the fabric . Hense confetti not seen a big quilt like this but you could def use her ideas to do blocks .

I dont know if you get sewing street t.v where you are if so there maybe a couple of pattens . Aand yes she does small merandering over the fabric peices .. hope this helps

Lisa, think about this on a small scale. Try a 15 inch block for your domestic, you sew got this, and if it doesn’t work, it’s only scraps right? 🥰
I have a lot more scraps than what you showed. In fact I bought five giant totes of scraps of various sizes. My son made about six quilts out of them. One was a California king. I have made a crumb, a string quilt and some other projects and I still have scraps running out of my ears.

You said that piece was a little loose and you were going back later to do a vertical stitch to attach it, how about doing a slanted lines instead. It would really step up the interest/ depth of your project. ( just a thought). What if you used a water soluble ( interfacing) to catch all of your fabrics but then when washed it wouldn't be covering up your fabrics; then if it has frayed edges thats O.K. it would look like a rag style piece then.(?)

I really like the idea of making a large block from the scraps after finishing a quilt … that way you have a quilt diary of sorts. This would be a great method for doing that.

Great question! Modern organza is 100% polyester, so the answer is yes!

Try a glue stick so you wont have the “puddle” that needs to dry. Glue sticks will dry faster

Problem we with gluing everything down and not sewing it the first time you wash it anything not sewn will come loose.
