I'm an 82 year old man who loves creative ideas, especially good ones. My wife does stained glass mosaic stepping stones of meaningful places, things, events, people, pets, etc. I am always fascinated by how the individual pieces of colored glass comes together to make an artistic statement. I can see myself playing with your idea to fit into my woodworking hobby, or as a stand alone hobby creating totally unique pieces of art. Thank you. I loved how it all came together in the end. Nice job.

Both you and your wife sound creative, handy, and fun! Have you done your project yet? It would be SO rewarding and beautiful, to be sure! I wish I could see both of your creative outputs! I LOVE stained glass, it's more than art, to me! I bet it's fun to create. My Mom is freshly 61, and I'm her caregiver through most of her waking hours. She has Frontal Temporal Dementia, sadly. Whenever I get fabric samples, I show her each piece and hand them to her. We feel, compare, contrast, etc. I talk about the cloth, as we go through them too. She really has enjoyed doing this over the past few years. So, I plan on making her a fidget/texture blanket similar to the mixed textile art in this video. I'd like to use mostly sentimental pieces of cloth to create it with. It would be a good way to tie memory to positive thought, calming feel/sound, and scent for her. She has been wheelchair bound for transportation these past few months. But, the unpredictableness of Dementia can occasionally be kind, and she's now walking again, with my aid, for the past couple of weeks!! No telling how long it will last this time, but every second is a blessing. Anyway, when I help her stand, she loves to sniff my hair. She inhales the blankets when I pull them to her chest, etc. Scent is, of course, heavily tied to memory, and I think it really helps to center and calm her! So, this video could be a great catalyst for beneficial art therapy for us, and I will enjoy the process of making it too!! I hope your loved ones and you have a FANTASTIC year, with MANY more to follow!! Thanks for sharing a moment of your time, and artistic endeavors!
      Take Care,
      Amanda Heath

I am the same about tinies and teenies and I save threads as well and eventually I look for inspiration ... With the threads soluable interfacing with thread see on by machine all over. Then the piece is washed by hand to leave only the seen on threads and then starched and milder into a shape, like draped over an upside down bowl, until dry and you have a beautiful delicate bowl. Watching you do this was very inspirational and I would like to see it hand sewn onto a canvas frame for hanging! Thank you for the video.

I do similar, except I have the shreds all laid out on top of the first layer and then lay solvy on top. Hold it down with clips or pins and then free motion all over the top. This way the machine foot does not get caught under any scraps. When all done wash the Solvy away under warm water and leave your textile to dry. Check stitching and stitch any scraps not sewn down.

Fun idea, very creative and addictive... my idea for what to do with the finished project:
Start with the base piece of muslin in a TRIANGLE shape instead of square; turn it over to trim to neater triangle size/shape after you have sewn on the fun bits... Make LOTS! - then use clothespegs to attach, or sew the triangle art onto ribbon,... and make a Holiday Banner/Garland, for events, parties, holidays, to hang across the mantle or windows...

If you place another piece of double sided adhesive and lay down a sheer voile over the top and iron, you’ll have a workable fabric that can be used for various projects. You could even use water soluble film. Mist over where you want fabric scraps, when layer is complete, add another layer of soluble fabric and free motion embroidery over the surface. When you’ve sewn all over the pieces, rinse your soluble film away. Lay the fabric over a bowl, mould around a bottle etc. When it’s dry it will hold the shape. I then use dilute modge podge and paint all over. It strengthens the shape of your piece. You can sew beads etc on it and continue to build up layers.
Just an idea I wanted to share. I love making sculptures from sari yarn s, fabric scraps and fibres.

I really like what you did with your fabric pieces. I too have an addiction to tiny pieces ! I saw a RUclips video recently where a bag was made using water soluble stabilizer. 3 sides were seen leaving a side open for stuffing. The small pieces and tiny strips were stuffed in randomly. The bag was like a small pillow; the scraps gave the impression of having some loft. The fourth side was sewn closed then lines were seen across the “pillow” until the scraps were sufficiently secured. Then the block was submerged in water to dissolve the stabilizer. Just relaying another method you might find useful. Thank you for sharing your idea it sure turned out nice.

This is great, I have a few books on the subject of using snippets, and like your method, which is very similar. I have been turning my crumb/snippet pieces into bookmarks, making them on a fabric about 16" x 15, makes 5, 3x7 bookmarks, then free motioning over them (I found using a washaway fabric on the top when free motioning was really a plus because the little pieces did not lift and, I was able to practice making fancy free motion patterns). I do a machine blanket stitch around the outside of each piece, marked into 3"x7" strips on the fabric before cutting, and do the free motion while it is still in the large piece, it makes the edges really neat and is easier to maneuver on the machine. I also use water washable glue stick on the pieces over the netting to tamp it down before ironing (with a press cloth) which works out more quickly for me. Thank you, this is inspiring me to start using my scraps again.

Also, keeping the muslin or batting in with the little bits would make it easy to grab and work on a little each time you sit down to sew rather than making it a huge project to try to finish!

Hey Nora! Great work! While it is not my particular taste, and I have tried doing this and just couldn't quite get "into" it, I do have a couple thoughts. I think the fidget blanket/texture blanket is something this could be used for. My thought is to possibly divide up at least some of the scraps and make each square smaller, and only of one color. So make smaller ones, one of each color for a learning tool. May not be possible though since the scraps are too small to really separate. My other idea is to possibly put a bit less of the smaller scraps on top, and sew them down a bit more then put some pretty beads placed around the square, maybe for an art piece or a small clutch bag with a few pearls. I will be interested to see if you do anything with them! Right now I am looking into dying some shibori ribbon and playing with that! Keep up the good work! OH! Just had a thought, this would be a fun wrap for a package! (my friend makes reusable wrapping out of fabric so people don't have to use paper. Just a few suggestions!

And change threads and/or stitches if you want to. After you're finished, soak the fabric sandwich in water to dissolve the top layer. And voila -- you have a little piece of art to use however you want to use it! :)

I love this idea, very arty... I actually follow Darlene, and at the moment I’m making one of her scrappy quilts, so I’ve got lots of little scraps left... I may give this idea a try... 👍😀🇬🇧

I take all those teeny tiny pieces and use them to fill cushions I make for the cats at the Humane Society. I use two rectangles for cotton fabric maybe a 10 x14 piece sew them and fill with all the pieces. They can wash them in hot water to clean them and the cats love laying on them.

I have saved a bunch of my little scraps also. I was thinking of making artsy faces and using the shreds for hair and maybe for dogs and cats. IDK Thanks for sharing. I do watch Darlene but I must have missed that episode where she shows how to use the tiny scraps.

I've seen something similar but perhaps faster and less messy. The backing fabric was laid down, then the larger scraps, then the shreds. After that was arranged to be visually interesting a piece of organza other other transparent fabric was laid over the top and then everything was stitched down, either randomly or with patterns. Fabric created this way was used to make zipper bags, vests etc.

yes, this is how I do it. Also Solvy is good too in place of organza. Once you sew everything on including shreds, ( I free motion mine) place it under a tap and wash the solvy off. I just disolves and you see all the stitching without the top piece.

I like the idea of organza, I’ve also thought about putting a layer of tulle over the top.

Use water soluble stabilizer sheet. Lay all stuff pile on, cover with stabilizer sew the heck oust of it all over almost 2 bobbins. Soak in water so stabilizer washes out. Becomes another wonderful sheets. Good luck.

The second shreds (that end up half-confetti size) could go in the compost, so allllll is useful somewhere. I LOVE crumb quilts with sizes down to 1/4" by 1/4", but beyond that, the garden gets em. Oooo... check out BORO fabric. Old technique of total salvage of cloth reworked to new clothes.
