Tracy, I think the addition of the black border was a game changer - the quilt is beautiful❣ Thanks for the tip of using the pencil to anchor the ruler in place when getting ready to draw a diagonal line in the center of a square...can hardly wait to try thar! 😃 And I'm a firm believer of bias on the bottom as well ... super great tip for newer quilters! Great video!

Watched the whole thing and the border quieted the whole thing down. When you use one color as an accent all through the quilt you avoid having what I call clown barf 🤣 I never liked scrap quilts, because of the clown barf thing, until I learned to have a constant. Now they're what I prefer to make!

I live in Minnesota where we have very long cold winters with little to of ice and snow. Car quilts are a real thing here. If you get stuck or end up in a ditch they can be life saving. Car quilts are a rite of passage in my family. As each of my kids and grandkids have gotten their drivers license and first car, they get to choose a car quilt out of my stash of them. Yes.. I have a stash of completed car quilts. They make amazing last minute gifts!

My Aunt gave me a wool blanket when I moved from LA to the snow belt in PA. She was concerned about us getting stranded in the snow, and we needed something to keep us warm. It came in handy. Fast forward about 10 years, and I made my first mystery quilt. I decided to make it a lap size. It turned out so pretty, so I call it my car quilt or my bus trip quilt for when I go on bus trips with the quilt guild. A few times some of the ladies have had to borrow my quilt. Lol I love your quilt. I have so many novelty Christmas fabrics, and this quilt would be perfect for this quilt. Thank you!

Love Love Love how it turned out! And yes I have a car quilt, it’s just 4” squares of cut up old jeans I found at the second hand store, different shades of blue with some black, white, and even red jeans material, now I think I should put a backing on it of Sherpa or cuddle stuff ‘cuz denim gets really cold in the winter (yeah, I never put a backing on it, shame on me)!

Yes, your quilt is busy, but it's a scrap quilt! It's very cool! You could also try for "controlled scrappy", keeping similar colorways, OR, if you're like me and have LOTS of layer cakes (too many 🤥), you can just use this same technique on a layer cake, and I think it would turn out really nice. Great, great pattern! (And I watched to the end 😊.)

I have a car quilt in my car. It’s custom fit to my back seats. I made it for my dog. He goes with me everywhere. He’s a big Shepherd type dog very big. it’s easy to throw it in the washing machine and it keeps his fur off the fabric in the car. I love it. He always gets it disheveled, but that’s OK. It’s his space. 😊

    Two tips:
If you want to use a paper template, line it up on an edge of the underside of your ruler and TAPE the template onto the ruler. That way lining up is quick and easy.
But even easier is to do the measurements you did, note how far away from your seam you need to cut and simply use that measurement on your ruler to make your cuts.

We live in Colorado and I take my great grandson to school every day. It gets pretty cold in the winter so I have three scrap quilts in my car and he can choose which one he wants to cover up with on the way to school. I am older so at times I have the AC in the car full blast, so he also uses a Quilts at that time. Haven’t made one like yours yet but I am planning to include it in my inventory. It would be fun for him to wrestle through my scraps and pick out fabrics he wants. Thanks for the great idea.

Though I appreciate that you did both cuts on each fabric at the same time, being a scatterbrain when doing repetitive tasks I know I'd screw it up, so I'd do one template on all of my squares and then the other on all of the pieces. Yes, I'd have to handle them all twice, but who cares?

The best gift from a friend is when they are thinking of keeping you safe and warm. Hugs from Canada.

Growing up in Denver, our dad made us keep a pair of snow boots, gloves, hat, socks and a change of clothes in our cars all winter - just in case. When my grown sons moved after college to cooler climates (from the south they grew up in) I made them fleece quillows for their cars but made the pocket bigger so they could put their feet in it in case they got stranded. Found out they didn’t keep them in their cars as instructed but use them at their desks at home. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Growing up, we had what we called a car rug. Basically, it was a thick wool blanket. At the beginning of the video, I was thinking that making the blocks scrappy would be easier and maybe it would, however, as you progressed, I started to like this a lot. I like that it looks somewhat planned rather than scrappy. I think the different patterned materials stand out better. I'd make one and I'd use it on a bed. I also learned some new tips so thanks for a great video. Take care.

I had to stop what I was doing to come leave a comment. I think this quilt is one of the MOST beautiful I have seen ANYWHERE in a long time! It looks like a REAL quilt. Like Grandma used to make . Todays quilts are so coordinated that they just look like pictures in a magazine or something that is die cut. To me they are far from what quilts started out to be. This quilt, however, is fantastic!

Your teaching is excellent. I feel as though I'm right there with you as your sewing. You address the audience perfectly especially when you get to mistakes and know that you will have a few wonky spots when you added the jelly-roll, black border. I'd put you right at the top of teaching skills!! It's been a while since I've made a quilt due to my husband's passing away. So, you've been inspirational to me to get the heck going on a scrap quilt. Your use of paper templates converted to a better material for the template was great because it cost no money! Love it!!!!! Thank you so much for your teaching and pattern.
