I've been shopping both of these. Elantra N can be had at MSRP. Honda dealerships are selling Type R's for $10,000 over MSRP. So in reality the Elantra N is $20,000 less.
The fact that the Elantra N is constantly being compared to the car class above it (Golf R, HCR) and not it’s own class (Si, GTI) speaks wonders on how badass this car is.
I don't really think it's in either class. It is the price if the lowers but significantly out performs them. But it isn't quite as fast as the uppers. It's in a weird middle ground.
It's the ultimate compliment to the Elantra N to be compared to the new Civic Type R ! Think about it...the Elantra N is priced like an Si ! I'm super proud to have an Elantra N in my driveway !
Awesome review from these guys...I have an Elantra N and i totally respect Honda's heritage the Type R is legend...Im just glad i could afford something that i like and that has decent performance.

I took the N, and I can't be happier with this decision. Definitely considered CTR during the purchasing process. But in the real world, I either need to wait for 2 years factory order or take 30k CAD mark up. I am sure the CTR is a better car, but not 40k better.
@@GingkoMister But it’s not really 10k difference. When you sell both the ctr will actually have cost you less. Now if you simply can’t get one that’s a different story.
I took an Integra...I considered the N, and even waiting for a CTR, but the Integra ticked all the boxes. Amazing chassis, great power, and all the creature comforts to be a nice daily driver. I can drive it at 9/10's and it's so rewarding. My wife and I are in agreement, that it's almost as special to drive as her Alfa. Almost. And that's saying something, because the Alfa is a whole other class of car. We are spoiled to have so many great options for fun, fast sedans in this day an age.
Owner of a 23 Elantra N. Definitely a fun car, with plenty of power and handling to send it. The exhaust itself probably makes me like this more than the Type R, even if that might perform a bit better. There's nothing like going under an overpass and hearing a few cracks
Yea I agree, I have one as well, couldn’t find a Type R anywhere near MSRP and had a hard time getting Honda to help me with my broken AC on my 2016 civic did not like Honda corporate at all thankfully got the AC fixed still works till it breaks again like the last time.
Both great cara. I also got 23 Elantra N DCT, i wanted Type R but they were everywhere for $55-60K, got this for effectively MSRP of $36K. 90% of Type R for much much less. So far happy with it,
5:24 The lighter clutch for N actually is a lesson learned from Genesis Coupe. The transmission wasn't as responsive and the clutch was quite heavy back then. It was one of the cars that you need some time to get used to, but with N, that time gets decreased significantly. N is more friendly to new comers into performance car, but also fun. And that popcorn noise.
Had an Elantra N pass me yesterday on my way to work and didn't realize it was even a model until that moment. It's nice to see that Hyundai is really making a name for themselves and giving the big dogs a run for their kibble!
Hyundai stepped up the game in design and performance when other automakers were in a dull era. Only thing Hyundai needs to step up is honoring their warranty. Numerous reports of Hyundai denying warranty claims.

THANK YOU for doing this comparison, and perfectly summing everyone's feelings in this video. If there were a million Type R's, we would all own one. But between availability, mark-ups, growing families, and people who cannot afford a 45K+ "weekend" car, the Elantra N, to me, is the champion. I own an Accord 2.0T 6 Speed, and I may be selling to replace as my dad hauler DD. Thank you Everyday Driver
Problem is ALSOevery dealership has the Type R marked up to at least $55k, at that price point it's out of reach for many people especially considered the luxury features you can get with $55k with other cars

I just like stuff that stands out, the old type r was amazing looking! Almost got one but the mark up is not for me lol I would have to be a Honda fan boy to pay 5k over sticker.
Just being compared to the type R is already a win for the elantra N. I hope they don't stop developing it. So that the type R would have a decent rival
I feel like the Sonata is just forgotten a lot , I have one and that thing is nuts, yes it sounds a bit more tame than Elantra but still better than most cars and the type R

I'm so glad I got an Elantra N. Its somewhat compromised and unrefined but it works for me. It looks awesome with black wheels and 5 or 10mm of negative offset. More importantly I have $12,000 more in the bank.
plenty of $$$ off top for other things like track tires/rims and something for daily driving etc tunes and so on...while paying it off vs having that extra to handle down the road. Plus most of the cars it competes with also need more gr86/wrx both need brake kits to be ideal on track. plenty of other cars in the N price segment that need more to do "more" vs the N off the lot. I just wish the 6 spd was more engaging the way the civic si or gr86 sells as. It makes the DCT look too good makes me consider the KONA lowered...but its marked up pretty tuff in my area 36k+5k....ouch. While the 2023 elantra is chilling at 34k PPL that can afford the type R will be a harsh ratio of hard parkers to actual hard drivers. About as painful as its barrier to entry
@@jtromans8307 Its not. Get the N, they're more available, don't get marked up as badly, consumables will be cheaper, and the 10 year warranty. And you get heated seats.
As a Honda enthusiast and owner of an FK8, I really like the Elantra. I like the over styling (ahh, hello, did I mention I have an FK8?) and futuristic look. As pointed out in the article, the driving public are the winners here with so many brilliant turbo hatches on the market.
The futuristic look is actually cleaner and more "modern" on Elantra, especially with 2024 facelift. But yeah its great that there is still performance car that is bold on the design. It may not up for everybody, but at least drivers have more options
Every time I watch one of your videos, I am impressed and amazed by how thorough you are covering every single feature about the cars you drive. It's so good to see someone covering the power and the way it's delivered, and the feel of the seats and the buttons. You guys are incredible!

Awesome comparison. The type r is awesome but that price is rough and hard to justify for most people. The elantra n really hits a perfect middle ground where you can get most of that performance while staying budget friendly.
Had a type R FL5 roll up to my elantra N on the road and he geeked over mine he said he almost got the EN over the R. But nice to see how so competitive these 2 cars are with each other. By far the best FWD cars on the market to date
Fully loaded Type R is over $52,000 MSRP. I have read that dealer markups are generally a few thousand over MSRP (in 2024). Let's say $54,000 versus a fully loaded EN is $37,000 with no markups at all. We're talking a real world $17,000 price difference. They are practically in different classes at these price points. Kudos to both companies for delivering amazing cars.
Now you have the Integra type S which will probably have 10k markups. It's why I'm seriously considering the Elantra. 34k is a steal even if the ENs interior isn't as nice as CTR
Hi, from Japan. Very good competitors they are. It is kind of unable to pick better one from these two cars. Only thing I can say is… I really appreciate is that Honda and Hyundai are still making fun cars for us car enthusiasts. I also appreciate existence of Todd and Paul. Thank you for distributing us nice and exciting films as usual!!
By FAR the best comparison of these two cars. Love them both. 10k is a lot for the average Joe like me though. I bought the N and don't regret it. Not one bit.
Beautiful review. Concluded it perfectly .. the Type R is the one we want, but the N just makes more sense to buy! I needed that, looking to grab an Veloster N!
@@supertin32 In today's history the Type R has proven its place in the track performance title. The days where people say "it's only a Honda" has come to a halt when a factory Type R can out do cars that are 200-300hp+ above its weight class. Many things are over priced but people will still seek it because of the value they feel for it. When a brand has not developed its place they will have to do what every brand has, start where they can get some retention. I can see if the N keeps up its performance in the years to come, for sure they will be increasing price as well.
All things considered the Veloster N is arguably the greatest hot hatch ever made. It was "Road & Track" Performance Car of the Year, in it's very first year of production, something no other hot hatch has ever won, type R has failed to win twice. The VN DCT is the fastest FWD car that "Car and Driver" has ever tested and anyone who's ever owned one knows it's the most fun car they've ever driven.
Not sure why so many N owners are lying to themselves and everyone else. At least you are honest. It’s like saying I hate Porsche because I can’t have one. Lol
I'm about nine months into Elantra ownership. The looks haven't grown on me, but once the newness wears off, you are left with a very capable car to hammer as hard as you want with a warranty that will last you five years. The R is nice, but something I feel I would worry about taking really good care of because the price.. N? No wash, full wot, beat on it. Came from a Fiesta ST, same thing.
Just hope you never need any work done from Hyundai. They are notoriously bad. Good luck getting them to honor that 5 year warranty too, hopefully you won't need it though.

The verdict is simple. Don't buy the civic type R to stick it to honda for raising the price. Think about it this way, they were selling an accord with this same motor and gear box for 29k in 2018. Sure, its around 34k now...but the Civic type R is a whopping 10 grand over a LUXURY SEDAN with the same engine. The Bill of Materials just doesn't add up in my mind. If the Civic cost 39,000 it would already be more appealing simply because its technically "sub 40 grand". The elantra is fantastic, I don't think anyone should be skipping it just because the civic is 1% better. The fact that they can do it, means honda can to, and that is just the reality. You are paying for the name brand. Its the same reason people are fed up with over priced toyota trucks that use dinosaur parts. Its just a brand name. You would think car nerds would be hyper technical and notice this, but alas, like Orwell said in 1984, emotions trump truth. Elantra N wins this one for me. Much nicer car, more daily driveable, and 10,000 USD is a lot of money.
Hyundai engines are garbage - the Type R can make 700hp on the oem engine Hyundai is just a cheap car - the lap times already show the Type R is superior with more potential than the FK8 which is already a fwd legend on tracks around the world The Hyundai is for guys who make excuses vs just stepping up to the superior car in class. 20yrs from now people will still want a Type R - the N will be long forgotten
@@TheFK8Life Type R's are for guys that make excuses rather than stepping up to the superior car in class. The average M comp shits on your over-priced 20K Marked up Type R. By your logic you've been settling for substandard and always will be 😅 because of brand fanboyism.
I think that was Hyundai's goal with the Elantra N, to make a daily driver, that is tame but fun from 9 to 5, but a fun haver after 5 and on the weekends. It can be a driver's car, but it needs more power. That's where the Civic Type R shines. I'd choose the Elantra N for myself though.
More power is easily had in the Elantra N too. Aside from adding stiffer bushings to mine which have greatly reduced the wheel hop issues, my car is stock, but a stage 1 tune has been in my mind for a while. You can easily get 50 hp from an ECU flash and colder spark plugs.
@@buildmorefarms1007 It is pretty quick, i dont really gas it cause it has wheel hop some times, but once when you are going in second, it keeps going.
Great comparison guys! Looking through the comments, it’s all the same typical nonsense about not trusting Hyundai quality, or I wouldn’t be caught dead driving a Hyundai, or it’s so ugly, blah blah blah. The fact that these cars exist should be celebrated regardless of brand. I own an Elantra N DCT. It’s an incredible drivers car and has been rock solid as far as reliability. I’ll be honest, the Civic Type R was never even a consideration to me because of the ridiculous dealer markups. Plus, I prefer an automatic so that in a pinch my wife could drive it. It’s by far the better all-in-1 car. The DCT is really, really good and would keep up better with a Civic Type R than a manual EN, but I get the apples to apples comparison. Anyway, I’m just happy to see more Elantra N comparisons.
That’s a shame because Hyundais reliability has long been among the best. I had a 2009 Genesis sedan that I drove everyday to 236k miles and it never needed anything besides oil changes in 7 years (well, I did have an O2 sensor go bad but that was it). I never even needed brake pads lol! Now, I do agree with the styling criticisms because this car just looks awful, but I could get over that considering it’s price/performance.
Both cars are great and it comes down to money…I was surprised how wide the Elantra N is and the FL5 is looking more like an accord euro r. Great review as always👍
You summed up every hatchback buyer's thinking perfectly! The TR is the better car...until u factor the huge price difference. To me $10k more for barley better performance is not worth it, but at $60k that TR's are selling for, you have to be nuts or not value your hard earned money very much to pay twice as much as an N for slightly better performance. If the TR was only $5k more than the N, I'd be Type R all day, but it is not!
The fact that you can have nearly the same performance and more amenities plus just a more fun car to drive all for $10k cheaper than the type R is just remarkable. Easy choice if you ask me. Wish you guys had the white Elantra though cause it looks so much better than the blue. Although the type r definitely looks better than the Elantra n.
Agreed. The first N I went to buy was Performance Blue, which is my favorite colorway, but on a car it was just too much blue for me. I ended up with the Ceramic White MT even though I had to drive 2 hours to get it XD
My realistic "dream car" used to be a badass stang or charger. But the past few years I've been thinking of N cars. It's a shame the veloster is gone. I wanted the VN soooooo bad!
Two amazing cars. The Type R will surely be remembered for years as one of the very best in any category. For the Elantra to come a close second to the Type R is an amazing achievement!
I'll keep my MK7 GTI. A few mods later & I've a better quality vehicle, a decent bump in power than either of these guys (& the current Golf R), & a car that drives much better on a daily basis. Knobs & buttons are underrated. :)
@@postalpancho I understand ur point however being better doesn't mean that it doesn't rival the CTR. Because even though its objectively the better car the EN is almost as great all while being 10k less if that makes sense.
@@amatureskater15 wrong I wanted a ctr test drove one and still bought a VN better warranty less space but oh well it’s way more fun and has more character than a type r and even tho they updated the new R our settings are still better and more easily customizable on the go ctr Is king but it’s just not good enough for the price and I love Hondas had an integra I wrecked that I wish I could get back to this day still have my 05 coupe but it’s not nearly as fun just a commuter. Type R is worth it if it’s going for MSRP. I honestly thought the MSRP was to expensive for the Type R I think under 40k is perfect. But the Type R is going for at least 50-60k which is just wild. Elantra N is definitely worth every penny you get so much for your money. Can’t say the same for the Type R.
I just bought on Friday 2023 EN w/DCT and I love it. It’s going to be my daily driver, I put about 2K miles a month going to work. It’s going to be a blast putting those miles on it! Thanks ED for making me feel I made the right decision.
You guys should have tested the 8spd DCT. Quicker at the drag strip/racetrack, has more power and stays in the boost longer because of superior gearing and lightning quick shifts. Also, the DCT makes daily driving less of a chore, or you can play F1 driver and play with the paddles so it's a no brainer win/win option.
Thanks for the video, guys. Still, once you test drive the N, you won't want to go back to any other FWD hot hatch. For the money, N is the obvious choice over Type-R. For everyday driving and racing purpose, N is the new King in town. Period.
- I love it when you guys struggle between the enthusiast’s heart versus livability. Great review!! One more thing, the Hyundai’s styling is just too much. And I drive a Predator-Mobile! 😂
I bought a 2023 Elantra N-line. It’s a great car. It’s not as fast as the N but it pushes over 200hp. The N is a summer car fully. The N-line offers a bit of both worlds of performance and luxury.
I’ve owned both…2019 Type R and 2023 Elantra N. The CTR is amazing but not that much better than the EN. Factor in the ridiculous market adjustments on the CTR and that $10k difference is now $15k-20k difference. Styling is subjective but in person the EN looks better than pictures and video. All the creases and angles that I was unsure about, I now love. And the exhaust…EN all day.
@VR JA it's obvious you haven't seen videos of the FL5 vs FK8. There's literally no difference in performance as they were neck and neck. Just admit it dude. You are jealous that Hyundai made such a great car. It is what it is. Deal with it 🤷🏽♂️
@VR JA If the majority like Cars designed to appeal to Senior Citizens more power to them but I say the 10th gen Civic Type R looked stunning and so does the Elantra N, The new Civic is plain and a ripoff too, I bet there wont be many on the road.
"People want the R but they will buy the N", I agree. They both have their pros and cons, but I'd prefer the Type R, the main problem is the mark ups. At my local Honda dealership they have one listed for $72k... I'm sorry when are they going to come back down to reality? To me $45k is still over priced, and markups make it completely unrealistic, especially when Hyundai is offering such a fun practical and reliable package as the N which also has much better stock exhaust than the R making it arguably more fun to drive, especially when the vast majority of people are never going to take them to a track. That's why I now as of 2 weeks ago became an N owner as much as I've always loved the Type R.
@@chamade166 The FK8 Type R looked way worse and it still sold like hotcakes. The N looks fine, but I do really hate the blacked-out bumper, would've preferred if they kept it body colored like the regular Elantra. Whereas the FL5 hatch looks timeless
Do not forget that the Elantra N can be bought AT MSRP at anywhere USA. The CTR WILL have at least a 20k markup AND they won't be nice to you when you're trying to buy at MSRP.
Conclusion was exactly what I thought. Sure, the Civic is better - but is it 10 grand better if it’s going to be your only car? No. Not for me. Especially with dealer markups. I’d probably buy the Veloster N because I like the looks more, and I don’t really need a four door. If money was no issue it would be the Golf R, but they’re not even close to my price range.
Between these two cars I would absolutely go with the CTR just due to its pedigree, build quality, and the kind of dynamics that only 30 years of development can bring you. But then I look at the price gap (as well as the laughably superior warranty) of the Hyundai and I start to think that, while the CTR is the superior sports car, is it really worth so much more money? As a Honda fanboy I say absolutely but as a poor person I just can’t justify the price. The Elantra N is an incredible bargain when you consider just how good it really is. I just wish I liked the odd styling, like even a little bit.
Idk if you’ve seen it in person but videos don’t do it justice. I thought it was ugly until I saw a black one in person. The lighter colors in my opinion don’t look good but black made me understand what they were going for.
I'm revisiting, since I now have 55k (kilometre) on my 2023 EN and this compairson is relevant. Given a choice at same price, I'd rather be in the Elantra N. It has more soul.
It’s so funny how the running theme is how no one likes the look of the Elantra but that’s what drew me to it initially! I can’t wait to buy one if only they weren’t so hard to find
You guys nailed it, I’m currently 19 and I bought an Elantra N back in March of 2022 and I was looking at the civic type R as a competitor and I couldn’t bring myself to buy it cause I needed a good daily that was fun and I couldn’t bring myself to spend 10k on a slightly better car that is going to be used daily
Wondering why the EN costs less? A quick way to show up the differences is by looking at the front brake setup. Just find pictures of the FL5 front wheels off. Do the same with the EN. Now you will understand why the EN is cheaper. No need to comment further. There are other areas of interest if you want to know them. 😁
The USA is an interesting market. In Canada its quite different: VW Golf R - $51,000 Honda CTR - $50,000? (Extremely limited) Toyota GR Corolla - $47,900 (extremely limited) Hyundai Elantra N - $41,000 Honda Civic Si - $37,000 VW GLI - $35,500 Mazda MX5 - $35,250 VW GTI - $35,000 Subaru WRX - $33,300 I have test driven everything but the CTR and the GR Corolla. I own the WRX. I have owned the 7.5 Golf R. I would like the GR Corolla (well, actually, I would want the GR Yaris) and someday an MX5 ND2…
I like both - the Elantra Ns factory exhaust note is crazy addicting to hear, however, I can't get over the looks, the Veloster N was so much better looking. The Civic looks perfect inside and out, just wish it was a little louder.
Real price difference isn't $10K, its $20-30K unless you are Savagegeese, Topher, Joe Raita or Tedward, then Honda will get you one for retail because you can promote the Type R on youtube, the world we live in. Therefore you should have included the Audi RS 3 for $65-ish, 000. That is the true price of a Type R and the RS 3 leaves both the the Type R and bargain Elantra N for dead because the Audi is a luxury car that does everything better. Yup, $65K or about $20K over MSRP for a 'Civic' is the going rate for the new Type R. A fool and his money. Lots of fools out there.
Well to play devil's advocate it's a special car and a dying breed so of course the dealerships are going to charge more The only realistic way I see that not happening is if you're like Canada and you literally made a loss saying you have to charge MSRP you can't mark up
@@TwoDollarGararge I live in Canada and we actually do have mark ups on these type of cars too!! Dealership owners buy the car and sell it as “used” instead over MSRP
Very true. A Civic Type R is "affordable" in exactly the same way a Nissan GT-R is. It's attainable with a car payment of well over $1000 a month and while I'll acknowledge how sweet of a car it is all day, any day, for that kind of money there are WAY more badass cars to be had.
For me, a good gearbox action is a precious thing. It made me lust after a 240Z after driving a friend's car in college. It is a real advantage the S2000 I used to own over the Boxster I have now. Worth $10,000? That's tough, but between that and other factors like track readiness, it would push me to the Type R.
Here in Canada, I came in a dealer for the Type R and people laughed at me and said "They are all pre sold, unless you are willing to pay 20k over on a used one" Left and went to buy a 24 Elantra N
I owned a tracked a fk8 in 75 degree weather and it overheated in 3 laps. 1-2 gear high rpm’s will grind if you rush it. I owned a 2022 Elantra N 6spd as well. 1-2 gear no problems. I never tracked it. It was not as fast as the type r on the freeway but it was more fun to bang gears and more playful oversteer. Also sounded better. From what I have read the fk8 and fl5 have an integrated cylinder head with coolant running through bolted directly to the turbo, for emission reasons. As well as the turbo right next to the front of the car next to the radiator instead of next to the fire wall like the Elantra. So the fl5 is improved but because of the engineering design there is no real fix for competitive track driving. Plus the stock compression and boost it runs are both higher than the slower non over heating Elantra n.
CTR has a reputation and legacy. But you have to ask yourself did the last gen and does this new gen live up to this legacy? The last gen had issues that most tried to deny. I researched CTR as a possible track toy and it became evident very quickly that was going to be a non-starter. Over the life of the platform, Honda made changes to address said issues but was never able to correct them completely. Now help me understand how this is a quality product? The jury is still out on the new gen but time will tell. Currently shopping for a new daily driver that will see occasional track use and I can tell you the new CTR and old are not on this list. Why? Last Gen has issues and I'm not willing to spend the time or resources to fix them. Why should I? The car should have come from the factory ready to go... and it didn't at least not for my use case as a dedicated track toy. My current track toy... Camaro SS 1LE has close to 9k track miles with zero issues as it came from the factory. EN with DCT is on my short list along with a few others including 2019 ATS -V. The point is dollar for dollar the EN offers more amenities and performance compared to last and current-gen CTR while being a better daily driver. As mentioned in the review what happens if EN is on 265's square set up or maybe put CTR on 245 square set up and run them again. The top end is CTR no question, overall performance and chassis dynamics might surprise a few folks. All one needs to do to see this is look with unbiased eyes. Long live the CTR legacy and blind sheep!!!

I actually have A Kia 14G T20 3 year model and I did put 2 95 30 18 for tires on it. It does scrub, it will scrub. However, you're getting like 99.89% of your full lock before the tires actually scrub. However, there will be a 2 inch wheelpoak. It still shows that Hyundai Kia and even Honda, with its 265 for base really do love. Wide tires So the goal for the GT that I have is 265 right about where the civic type are is, if not 275 with a 9 inch rim. With that, I think it would be a quarter inch maybe half an inch of will poke, but if the standard car comes with 225 and it's able to the 4K GT that ISIS able to go about a 120 and light/medium curvy roads. The roads I have around here are light medium curve and bends. However, there are a few sharp hand corners. The car was able to get up to a mass of a 120 miles. An hour an average about 70 to 80 around most corners. If not, a little bit more with using proper lines. Oh my goodness, the front will drive cars. Now that are actually performance. Oriented really are knocking out your value per dollar.
As a automotive technician and fk8 owner and avid honda enthusiast! I almost couldn’t agree more with what they say … my only concern would be hyundai reliability , wich is yet to be proven! Good channel , keep up the good works
Great review! I'm going to take a leap and get an Elantra N. A little worried about reliability but the warranty is solid so it hopefully isn't a big concern
@@simonpz4159 Hey man, 6 spd Elantra N owner here. Bought car around 4 months ago, coming up on 10k km beat the shit out of it daily in the snow and commute. Got it tuned and running aftermarket parts, car has not thrown a single light or ran poorly. Biggest things is finding a good dealership. They can be the biggest hit or miss part about the Hyundai experience. When it comes to warranty and if in the states the mark ups.
Don’t be worried, I got an Elantra sport and just about to hit 90k miles. Car has giving me no trouble and I drive it hard because it is fun to drive. Best car I have ever bought for 16k a couple years ago.
@@jamessephar9458 like I mentioned it depends on the dealership relationship you have. I have bought a few cars from them and same with my family. I spoke to them before hand telling them about the tune and mods and they have no voided warranty when I’ve gone in for service. Also not running an insane tune with 40 psi. If you’re being a dumbass and over pushing things it’s a different story.
The R is better, but it should be at 10k more. I own a 6spd Elantra N and daily drive it. 6 months and 17k miles and I am still smiling. Pop Crackle pop .... 😄
I think a key point between these two cars is reliability when modified. I've never kept a single car I've owned stock for longer than 3 months. I don't think there is any debate that the Honda is head and shoulders above the EN in terms of reliability when making 400+WHP
@tbunreall yeah, all that to say I am super impressed with the EN. Considering buying one as I'm kinda sick of driving manual (never thought I'd say that but it actually seems to have hit me).
I’m hooked on the Elantra N. I’m a cheapskate…. Always looking for more than what I pay for, and knowing actual prices on the Type R are in the 60k range makes it an easy decision. I can’t afford the type R, so an Elantra N with a mild tune will get absolute mad lad performance for what amounts to a 35k dollar sedan.
N is a lot more configurable electronically through drive modes and shortcut buttons. I'd say DCT is a better comparison for type R because it is faster than manual and offers overboost.
Im an elantra N owner here, i would not trade my N for the R. i would have the N even if it was the same price. the N in DCT form is faster, and by a LOT I am able to sit right with 10 speed 5.0s bone stock. the civic just doesn't do it for me. No hate to my type R brothers though. i just prefer the N
Good piece gents! I tend to agree with you that the CTR is the right choice. I cant understand how that Elantra design got approved. its so out there. I mean really a giant risk. If it was a prettier car, I could see that being the class leader from an overall everyday standpoint. However its not. its an... acquired taste. Too bad.
The Quote at the end nailed it, The CTR is the car i wanted but at 50-60k for an all year round daily in Canada I could not justify it. So I bought my Performance Blue DCT (which has more options in Canada) for a conversion of $29,000 USD. The huge difference in price could not make up for the minimal performance difference you would see on the road, especially with mine being DCT.
@@fortheloveofnoise i always have a manual car for my weekend toy, heck the first 5 cars i ever owner were manual only, but when you need a car for the wifey to drive too, and sit in traffic for 2+ hours a day in the city the dct is better suited.
Crazy how people are hung up on the $10k. No one thinks about what happens when you go to sell each one. The CTR Will actually end up costing you less. That’s all but guaranteed.
Great video, nice comparison. I've loved Honda's for decades and will always acknowledge how badass the CTR is. I love both but chose the EN because it gives you more. I like it more due the price, the cool features, better interior, way better tech, not to mention availability of the car and the ability to NOT get utterly raked over the coals by bottom feeding stealerships.

The days where people say "it's only a Honda" has come to a halt when a factory Type R can out do cars that are 200-300hp+ above its weight class. Many things are over priced but people will still seek it because of the value they feel for it. great comparison video, I guess most of us who could not get the allocation of CTR, are actually thinking to get the Elantra N
Hyundai engines are garbage - the Type R can make 700hp on the oem engine
Hyundai is just a cheap car - the lap times already show the Type R is superior with more potential than the FK8 which is already a fwd legend on tracks around the world
The Hyundai is for guys who make excuses vs just stepping up to the superior car in class.

Id feel like I wasted my money to pay an extra 10k only to be faster by a second at the most I do like the body lines and it looks better than EN but that’s about it I’m not paying all that extra money for appearance.
The $5000-$10000 mark up price on the Civic type R is a deal breaker for me
It's exactly why I got EN, i could pay $45 for Type R but $60??? No way
Type R is worth it if it’s going for MSRP.
That's not the same car.
We have a different comparison with the DCT Elantra N. Thanks for watching!
Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for watching!
Deal with it 🤷🏽♂️
@VR JA New Type R has had a styling downgrade, 10th gen was beautiful. Elantra N has a wild design, I love the way it looks.
@VR JA The new design looks like what an old Lady would drive to Church on Sunday.
The Elantra N is a scrappy, over performer, and I like that. The CTR is probably a future classic but I always favor an underdog.
Scrappy, over performer in what way? Ina a bad way?
Elantra N is the type r of the "poor"
The Elantra N cannot outrun its ghettolicious ugliness even in N mode.
@@chamade166 The FK8 Type R looked way worse and it still sold like hotcakes. The N looks fine, but I do really hate the blacked-out bumper, would've preferred if they kept it body colored like the regular Elantra. Whereas the FL5 hatch looks timeless
@@lawnmower6591 in a great way. It is better than people expect.
Great conclusion now I’m getting the Golf R.
I choose the Elantra N hands down. cheap. warranty. heated seats. sick exhaust. and I like the look. all hondas still look the same.
You could also just get a brz, but the civic hatchback space and practical use are its advantages.
You guys just made me really happy that I bought my Elantra N
Well said
IVE BEEN WAITING FOREVER FOR YOU GUYS TO REVIEW THE ELANTRA N
I saw the Elantra N the other day at a light and it is NIICEEEEE
I'm revisiting, since I now have 55k (kilometre) on my 2023 EN and this compairson is relevant. Given a choice at same price, I'd rather be in the Elantra N. It has more soul.
The Elantra N is the car you buy to avoid a $20k dealer markup. At MSRP, Type R is the clear choice.
30k vs 60k in reality because mark ups
My thoughts exactly when I bought an i30N over an FK8 Type R. It's also more fun and sounds better!

Looks like a really fun filming day.
The USA is an interesting market. In Canada its quite different:
VW Golf R - $51,000
Honda CTR - $50,000? (Extremely limited)
Toyota GR Corolla - $47,900 (extremely limited)
Hyundai Elantra N - $41,000
Honda Civic Si - $37,000
VW GLI - $35,500
Mazda MX5 - $35,250
VW GTI - $35,000
Subaru WRX - $33,300
I have test driven everything but the CTR and the GR Corolla.
It’s incredibly annoying when owning the car.
@@kraenk12 exactly, imagine hearing it every day with every shift
100% true but also rs3's have mark ups too!!
@@Nimasis Yes ! I saw a new Civic Type R in BC with 500km on it with an asking price of $89K CAD ! What a joke ! 😂
With dealer markups the ctr is like $20k more than the N

So Elantra won this battle also.

Type R at msrp is just laughable. Dumb dumbs that actually pay over msrp are ruining the joy of owning a good car.
You do realize there are only about 7k cars total coming to the us in the 3 year production run.
@@justinhale2160didn’t know that
I owned a tracked a fk8 in 75 degree weather and it overheated in 3 laps.
If you're willing to drive a high performance FWD car, buy the one that's $10k cheaper (before markups) and does 95% of what the Civic Type R does.
The Hyundai will never make 700hp on its stock engine - the Type R will
It's not even a contest when it comes to value to performance.
@@TheFK8LifeLol 99% of consumers don’t want a 700 hp car even in this segment. A light car with 300 hp with 300 lbft of torque is already way more than enough for the road.
@Sam Rastagar Can't afford is very different from. Don't want
People who value performance want reliable power and the Type R offers much much more reliable power over the shit engine Hyundai products.
@@TheFK8Life But some people don’t wanna pay 10-15k more when there really isn’t much of a difference except for reliability and even then Hyundai offers a 100k mile powertrain warranty. Also, there’s an option for a DCT transmission I’d take a DCT over a manual any-day of the week especially for a daily driver

I think a key point between these two cars is reliability when modified. I've never kept a single car I've owned stock for longer than 3 months. I don't think there is any debate that the Honda is head and shoulders above the EN in terms of reliability when making 400+WHP
400in a front wheel drive car is just not necessary. Tuning the elantra for 60 more hp just makes way more sense

This elentra reminds me of why I got an srt4 in 2004. Awesome fun fwd with the right noise out back.
N is a lot more configurable electronically through drive modes and shortcut buttons. I'd say DCT is a better comparison for type R because it is faster than manual and offers overboost.
Civic Type-R takes it. The price is hard to take on however it will retain resale value. Quality will defiantly go to the Civic
