Hi, from Japan!! Here in Japan, people think this is the greatest Civic Type R ever, too. Also people whose age are around 40s appreciate the exterior. They couldn’t buy the prior one because of its Gundam looking. Now, it’s solved. Anyway, nice car!!
The lead engineer mentioned in Savagegeese's first video on the FL5 that this will indeed be the last Type R before it gets electrified, so I'm thoroughly looking forward to getting my hands on one... eventually.
It's tough to describe how good the car is from the factory but it's much easier to show them on an open road. My 2021 Type R has 640hp on the factory engine/trans/clutch People who complain about the price don't understand the engineering in a Type R
I'm a car salesman. I got a phone call and my buddy I use to work with got me to #1 on the Type R list, I had it for about a week now. my first little test drive- not even going above 3k RPM- put a giant grin on my face, made me giggle like a little kid. The Shifter is amazing, the rev hang is almost non existent, the rev match is perfect, and the clutch feels sooooo good. This is ultimate refinement. Looks amazing in person, and my boost blue attracts a lot of attention. The red seats/seatbelts, with the red interior is so special. Knowing that your engine is designed only for your vehicle, its a whole package. Coming from a A90 Supra, to a C6 Vette- and my 23 BRZ that I had for 2 months and had to sell it for the Type R- the FL5 Type R is a beautiful machine- and I hope to keep mine for a very long time.
TOTALLY agree that the wing should be paint matched. That and the mirrors. Aside from that, I absolutely love the styling of the FL5. The rear especially
I actually appreciate the black color on the spoiler and mirrors. On top of that would like to see the roof black as well or carbon. This would match the classic theme of NSX Type R.
Looking forward to (hopefully) getting my Model Year 2025 allocation eventually - *fingers crossed*. Integra Type S as a backup plan if the MSRP is reasonable.
Integra Type S is a horrible buy. Won’t retain its value much at all due to nobody caring about Acura now, and the price puts it in the same range as much much much better cars in the market.
@@JacesOwnWorld I see what you’re saying, but there’s really nothing else that have the Type R and (incoming) ITS’ combination of practicality and top-tier manual gearbox at any price point. If I have the ability to have two cars, I'd be looking more for something that handles the daily chores better (more features, more comfortable ride, etc.), and something that would be a more dedicated sports car (maybe something like an MX-5). 1,5 years waiting time in Belgium for the Fl5 and my current company car lease ends end of the year. I will walk by foot for 6 months if it gets me this but I will have one in the driveway.
My issue is with this car is its simply huge, it's nothing like the hot hatch form factor. A long, wide FWD car just isn't interesting for me, the low ground clearance and long wheel base will scrape a lot of places in the city. Its like a 15 year old Accord in size. It does seem like a weapon though, wow. Corolla GR might be a blunter tool with a poor interior but it's sized perfectly.
Amazing car. We are all very fortunate Honda even makes it, not to mention the other sport cars from other manufacturers (thinking Toyobaru, Corolla GR4, of course the GTI though it needs actual buttons). Ahem! What would it look like as a coupe? Freaking amazing I guarantee! Just too big and long etc, weird styling overall, better than previous gen of course. But I'm Gen X and own a Veloster N with performance package so of course I'm gonna say the CTR's too pricey. So meet me at the autocross course if you feel hurt lol
Not kidding, but I wouldn’t buy this simply because of the excessively bright red seats. Why can’t I have red stitching or just plain black..? It literally kills it for me.

Hi, I've heard a lot of people mention that the cabin noise in the FL5 is quite noticeable. What are your thoughts on this issue? Do you have any insights or comments on it? Thanks in advance
@Bill Lyle: I owned a 2020 10th Gen Si from Sept 20 until last month. It's a very nice car, but it just doesn't have enough power and torque in 1st and 2nd gear. Once the turbo kicks in in 3rd and 4th gear, it is actually pretty quick, for the kind of car that it is. Great passing power, and quite fun. But I found 1st and 2nd gear kind of sad. It was a great mountain road car. I drove it on the mountain roads north of LA quite a bit while I had it. It was easy to drive fast on those roads. Also, mountain roads with tight turns are where the second gear in that car finally made sense to me. It was superb. However, the enhanced (louder) fake engine noise in sport mode was so annoying in second gear, that I rarely used sport mode, even on tight mountain roads. The regular mode handled just as well, and was more enjoyably compliant. Sport mode was just stiffer and louder. As for me, if I were going to buy this kind of car again, I would much rather pay for an Elantra N. Way more power and torque, and just seems like it would be a lot more fun to drive, as fun cars go. The 10th Gen Si was nice, but kind of remote. Don't know about the 11th Gen Si. I find my 2013 Accord Sport 6MT is a more involving mountain road car, and actually more fun. And that's without it even having a limited-slip differential. It requires more work, more corrections while driving, but that's part of why it is more fun and involving.
Just add a $600 Hondata Flashpro plugin unit and add 45hp and 50flb to an SI without any additional engine upgrades. Got one for my 2017 SI and it was fantastic. Starts the car in sport mode by default and a bunch more things, kills rev hang, can remove the rev limiter as well as speed limiter if desired.
Sounds like the suspension is tuned for my liking. I love a lot of feedback and road feel. But my god, the artificial sound pumped in should be defeatable.
Not sure if just me, but the artificial engine noise is the main reason why I'm not interested in this car. Has no place in a visceral manual car like this and would drive me nuts. Doesn't even sound good
That thing is super duper nice. Great looking car. But I will never buy another front wheel drive car ever again. I've had three. AWD or RWD only from now on. Currently have a paid off 17 WRX. Love it.
$45k is a lot to ask for for a FWD Civic. I agree. But then it’s marked up price is just stupid. For $45k, it really should come AWD standard. People make it out to be something more than it is, and forget it’s a FWD Civic at the end of the day.
What do you think 🤔 if it had the new GR corolla 70/30 Diff or a 60/40 60 front 40 rear or giving it more rear wheel support in Launches or full control where you can play with that number 40/60 50/50 60/40 70/30 front to rear with that ability, I meant agility there be no need for AWD but it will have a next level stability and sensation feeling that no other typeR would have brought fort
This car is my absolute dream, but I won't be buying one due to the lack of vented seats :( living in AZ, that's a must. Otherwise I'd trade my 2022 f150 for one of these right now
Excellent review as always. Real question, say for someone currently in a comparable manual performance sedan, call it a 2017 Subaru WRX, is the Type R $44k better, less trade in, presuming the Type R can be had at $44k?
I would say yes, the CTR is worth it’s markup MSRP price. But anything over MSRP, no. I would also say the WRX is a horrible buy at its price point. 🤷♂️
As someone who’s owned a WRX, albeit a 2002 bug eye, I’d say my Si’s before it and the Type R currently are tighter and more responsive in the feedback. Subaru is fun in different ways. (But yes, I think you should get one)
The Type R is expensive compared to the lesser models. They've always been that way. The Integra Type R was expensive compared to the GSR. Other than most of the interior, almost the entire car has been changed in some capacity. Is it an expensive Civic? Yes. But it is beyond what a modified Si can do at that price with a manufacturer warranty.
"Something not we can control". You can still condemn the dealers doing the insane markups because that is going to kill the already slim hothatch market.
On one side it's nice to know these cars are limited, and will hold good value, and on the other side you're plopping down up to $60k for one with those markups.
I want this car. I've had a Honda or Acura in my driveway for the last 22 years and refuse to pay a markup, therefore Honda has lost my business and loyalty.
The show owned a GR86 for a year (only planned for a year) if that answers your question. People aren't really going to be cross shopping the two though.
Depends on your usage. No doubt the CTR is more fun as a driver's car, but the IS500 is a better commute car. If you're going to get a chance to enjoy the CTR on a fun road with consistency, then it's worth it! Thanks for watching!
Do you think this will be a good investment car as well similar to Ford focus RS ? We can get this brand new for the same price as a used Focus RS in our part of the world.
@@phattyhales Absolutely not! I wouldn’t give a squirt of piss over MSRP! My pain, suffering, and economic turmoil is not worth the 3rd boat any asshole regional manager is going to buy with that ADM!!!
One could add a turbo kit to the Subaru RS hatch and have more fun than in the Civic Type R for almost half the price of the dealer inflated Type R. It would have more headroom, an automatic transmission, and all wheel drive!!!!! An Alfa Tonale Veloce PHEV has as much sportiness, equal torque and adjustable suspension, more room in the back, all wheel drive, muuuch better looks, interior, visibility, more quiet interior and much much better gas mileage. Plus, the resale on the Alfa will be garbage next year and a steal!!!!!!! Honda can screw themselves with the dealer markups.
That engine note sounds utterly irritating. Surely that fake sound daktor can be switched off? Has to be one of the most annoying noises I've ever heard coming from a car
You hit the mail on the head for though, “Don’t buy this car as just a commute car” if your going to spend this much money on a civic at least enjoy it.
I think the FL5 CTR is a really good car…for $45k. Anything more, it’s a “see ya later folks” and a wave goodbye for me. I will gladly go pick up a way funner daily car, aka GT350, Camaro SS, Camaro Z28, M3/4, M2, RS3, etc.! Just because I found one guy to buy my $1 bottle of water for $20, doesn’t mean bottles of water are now “worth” $20. No, its still worth $1. I just got LUCKY, and was patient enough to wait for that “one guy” to purchase it for that price. “I know what I got” has become super trendy ever since COVID happened. The market changed because our government f*>#*ed us in the a##, and that’s why vehicles started rising in price, not because they’re “worth a $10-20k+” markup! People got bored as they were forced to sit in their houses, and with boredom came impulse buying, and with impulse buying came the impulse to overpay for EVERYTHING! The FL5 CTR is worth $45k. Nothing more.
@@civicekhatch9 you can’t get a GT 350 for 65 either or any of the other cars mentioned. All enthusiast cars are marked up right now and if they are not then there’s a reason for that. Edit: sorry I’m responding to the wrong video.
@@phodacbitch Like you, I much prefer the FL5; the FK8's over-styling never grew on me. But I think people should stop looking at them as competition, and instead as options. Everyone's got their own taste, I'm just glad Honda gave us such a drastic change in aesthetics despite them being pretty much the same car underneath. It would have been so easy for them to leave the unibody mostly as-is and just change up the bumpers, lights, and hood.
Its 2023, and why is Honda still building a 300+ hp car on a FWD? There is no amount of technology or engineering to compensate for that. Its just lazy if you ask me. And the price is close to $50k...for a Civic....no thanks Honda.

I wish you could get black seats. I just can’t do the high school tuner red.
Paul, are you a big G Shock fan?
What do you think 🤔 if it had the new GR corolla 70/30 Diff or a 60/40 60 front 40 rear or giving it more rear wheel support in Launches or full control where you can play with that number 40/60 50/50 60/40 70/30 front to rear with that ability, I meant agility there be no need for AWD but it will have a next level stability and sensation feeling that no other typeR would have brought fort
Car sounds EPIC
This car is my absolute dream, but I won't be buying one due to the lack of vented seats :( living in AZ, that's a must. Otherwise I'd trade my 2022 f150 for one of these right now
Excellent review as always. Real question, say for someone currently in a comparable manual performance sedan, call it a 2017 Subaru WRX, is the Type R $44k better, less trade in, presuming the Type R can be had at $44k?
youre not getting a type r for MSRP. 5-6K MINIMUM markup
I wish Honda sold these special edition cars directly to consumers to eliminate grubby dealer markups.
We’ve condemned it over and over on our podcast and on video. Thanks for watching!
wonder how long they make this model...
MSRP means nothing for this car. In SoCal they are 20-30k over MSRP for that reason it’s not a car I will ever get.
The Japanese just amaze me. As impressive as the type R is, just imagine the Toyota Corolla three cylinder making 300 hp.
On one side it's nice to know these cars are limited, and will hold good value, and on the other side you're plopping down up to $60k for one with those markups.
Fun review!
I can't wait to pay 75k for a Civic!
I want this car. I've had a Honda or Acura in my driveway for the last 22 years and refuse to pay a markup, therefore Honda has lost my business and loyalty.
No No No.. I am totally disagree that the wing should be painted in body color, not for a Type R !
Which one would you guys take home the type r or the gr86?
The show owned a GR86 for a year (only planned for a year) if that answers your question. People aren't really going to be cross shopping the two though.
Would you guys take this over IS500
I have a IS500 and am considering the t
CTR
Depends on your usage. No doubt the CTR is more fun as a driver's car, but the IS500 is a better commute car. If you're going to get a chance to enjoy the CTR on a fun road with consistency, then it's worth it! Thanks for watching!
@@TestDriveVideos thank you guys and I love watching your videos!
why is he complaining about type r being too hardcore... it was always HARDCORE.
Do you think this will be a good investment car as well similar to Ford focus RS ? We can get this brand new for the same price as a used Focus RS in our part of the world.
focus rs will break down on the side of the road.
Are you guys are saying the FL5 is overhyped? Are you saying a civic is not worth 60k with markups? Curious.
Is there a car in the world that is worth any amount of markup regardless of how good it is?
@@phattyhales Absolutely not! I wouldn’t give a squirt of piss over MSRP! My pain, suffering, and economic turmoil is not worth the 3rd boat any asshole regional manager is going to buy with that ADM!!!
Not worth 60K I have one. Keep fighting for msrp
The price, depends we're you live in Puerto Rico is 65😢
One could add a turbo kit to the Subaru RS hatch and have more fun than in the Civic Type R for almost half the price of the dealer inflated Type R.
I trust Honda racing heritage more than Toyota's 😁👍
If it was an Audi from 5 years ago you’d be complaining about the iPad stuck to the dashboard 😂
So sick of seeing reviews on RUclips of these cars and they are literally impossible to buy or even see on the road
I was next to one, stopped at a light- ooooooooooooh
Hyundai Elantra N. At least those are not limited-production unobtainium. Great marketing scam, Honda. Sent me running for the hills of other brands.
I wish you could get it without the rear wing for those not driving on track. It looks gaudy
Visually the passenger seat looks higher...
That engine note sounds utterly irritating. Surely that fake sound daktor can be switched off? Has to be one of the most annoying noises I've ever heard coming from a car
$45k msrp + $20k markup +tax/fees
You hit the mail on the head for though, “Don’t buy this car as just a commute car” if your going to spend this much money on a civic at least enjoy it.
I does not look evil anymore.
Civic Type R or Golf R?
We actually just filmed a CTR vs GR Corolla Circuit vs Golf R this week for the main channel so sit tight and know that is coming!
Polo
You always talk about cars you can't afford kid - stick to being broke with a VW
tell us how you really feel
@@karmahunden I just did lol
At this point why not just build a RWD car with the same engine and 2 doors. Cough cough new S2K please cough cough
Non adjustable passenger seat is strangely a deal breaker for me, not that I can afford $40k+ for a fun car.
What does the passenger seat have to do with anything? Lol
Impressive car, but it’s too expensive and if you think this drives anything like a RWD car, it does not.
It does and embarrasses 300hp rwd cars regularly in the process
Excellent car... but I just don't find these new Honda designs nice anymore. Just not my cup of tea.
So you say it’s a blank cheque car and then say it’s expensive. Tell me something that costs 44k that offers everything that this Type R does.
I'll tell you when you tell me where to buy Type R for 44k.
I have checked with plenty of dealership trying to buy one and they're all selling them for between $65-75k dollars. You can't get it for $44k
@@civicekhatch9 you can’t get a GT 350 for 65 either or any of the other cars mentioned. All enthusiast cars are marked up right now and if they are not then there’s a reason for that.
Edit: sorry I’m responding to the wrong video.
❌❌Honda reasonably made 11th gen look too basic
FWD isn’t really a sports car.
I like the fk8 styling better, the fl5 looks too much like the base civic with a wing
You like the ricer look I see.
I don’t care if it’s the best FWD car ever. Wheel hop and torque steer kills this car. Needs to be AWD
R mode is nothing. Non of these ppl know what supercar stiff is c’mon cuz they never own one
Put that money toward a cayman and be done.
Or put it towards a Type R, take it to the track, then take your family out to dinner with it after. Oh then take it in for your cheap periodic maintenance.
