Remember Phase 1 of the MCU? Remember when the possibilities seemed endless the simplicity of the storytelling lent way to more intimate character stories? Remember when it felt like the creative heads at Marvel actually gave a damn about the craft that went into their movies? It was that attention to detail, that level of care and understanding for the characters and their emotional journies that allowed people to fall in love with the brilliance of the MCU during Phase 1, where the greatest threat was an Alien army invading New York City. Iron Man may have opened the door, but it wasn't until 2011's Thor that the universe of the MCU exploded with the introduction of Gods and the cosmos. And yet, despite the fact that a larger universe was awakening right before us, director Kenneth Branagh ensured that the heart and drama never left our reality. More so than any other Phase 1 filmmaker, Branagh understood that with great power, came great responsibility. It wasn't simply enough to explore and explain every tiny detail of the infinite cosmos, but rather craft a compelling narrative around centuries-old mythic figures, ushering them into the modern era of storytelling. You see, Thor isn't simply an adaptation of the beloved comic book hero but rather a mixture of the Shakespearean Tragedy, mythic folktales, and modern day mythology as told through comic books and films. These are heroes and archetypes as old as time, framed and shot with such vibrant colors and extravagant costumes and sets, transformed into heroes for a new generation. Thor is perhaps the most underrated movie in Phase 1 of the MCU because it not only unlocked a new frontier in the Marvel Universe, but it simultaneously took these icons back to their ancient roots in order to chart a new path forward. Simply put, Thor deserves more love, and we're gonna give it to him! Griffin (@griffschiller) and Editor Laurence (@laurence_hisee) give you their Thor movie review and explain why Thor is underrated, Why Thor is the best Thor movie, why Thor is perfect, and why Thor is the best! Enjoy this Thor video essay or this Thor analysis on why The Perfect Thor Movie Already Exists!

    🎞 About Thor (2011) 🎞
As the son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), king of the Norse gods, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will soon inherit the throne of Asgard from his aging father. However, on the day that he is to be crowned, Thor reacts with brutality when the gods' enemies, the Frost Giants, enter the palace in violation of their treaty. As punishment, Odin banishes Thor to Earth. While Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Thor's brother, plots mischief in Asgard, Thor, now stripped of his powers, faces his greatest threat.

This is still the best thor movie for me. The story, the score, the jokes, all compliment each other. Unlike the newer ones where every second in the film is packed with jokes, Thor 1 separates both drama and comedy. It was also great that they picked Keneth Branagh as the director, which, in my opinion, was by far the best director for something like Thor, seeing that he himself is a master of shakespearean acting. What I also love in the film was that it focuses on thor, not some side character, but thor.

Then they had to go and nerf Thor, have him handle the mantle over to 'King' Valkryie the enslaver (who twice he had to beg to help their people and twice she refused him and left him to the Grandmaster's gladiator games before finally helping), refused to allow him to redeem himself and snap everyone back and have never since used the Thor 1 or Ragnarok music, and now he's a walking joke. Thor (just Thor) is a fantastic film that set the groundwork for a lot of what we love about the MCU today. The art direction and sci-fi concepts, the dynamic between Thor and Loki, and magic being a thing that exists without feeling like it shouldn’t exist. CB Thor would not make silly excuses like that. He'd reply instead, "And he shall answer for every one of his despicable actions, Mlady, I promise thee that." Where as Thor I thought was Marvel’s Aquaman just lame. And felt justified when we meet him in the movie. But the movie does an AMAZING job at showing us Thor get humbled and be willing to sacrifice himself for others where by the end I was humbled! I walked out of the theater happy and excited. But also given the ground work for Thor being my FAVORITE hero in Marvel!

I agree and I´m kinda missing the Character they introduced in this movie. Branaghs directing and Hemsworth´s acting fit the character so well, and Hiddleston can do both, the stage as well as the screen. unfortunately they took this god-character and brought him down to the level of the other characters, while making him the goofball/idiot at the same time. meanwhile, captain marvel, a human, gets elevated to a, out of touch with humanity.being, looking down onto lesser creatures. Thor can be humbled and given some connnection with regular beings, but he is still a mighty god and this should be one of his character traits. Love and Thunder, while entertaining as a movie itself, is a abomination as a Thor Movie as well es a continuation of the Endgame Storyline.

As the MCU has gone on, the films have become more confused. They’re at their strongest when they tell a simple story with one theme to guide it. Some of Phase 4’s films attempt that but they always fall short or become muddled because there’s so much extra stuff they need to cram in there. Thor: Love and Thunder’s story is simple and should’ve been powerful but it barely gets there because it spends so much time on fluff. Kind of makes up for it by being one of their funniest movies, though.

I enjoyed this video, I love seeing someone appreciate the first Thor movie, it's my third favorite MCU movie, but Loki’s transformation from how he was in Thor to how he is in The Avengers makes sense to me. I believe after finding out his true heritage Loki started having a mental breakdown, because as the movie goes on he starts turning more violent, he starts out wanting to prove himself equal to Thor and ends with trying to destroy Jotunheim and everyone on it, showing he was no longer thinking clearly since that's the very thing that got Thor banished. I think by the time he shows up in the Avengers he's gone completely mad, his actions aren't much different than in Thor, they're just on a larger scale, and he acts more viciously. He’s now full of more hate, anger, and jealousy, he’s more desperate to prove his worth because in his eyes he's already failed to do that once. In Thor, he opened up the Bifrost and sent the destroyer to destroy a small town. In The Avengers he opens a portal to allow the Chitaturi in to destroy a large city. You also have the Mind Stone in his scepter fueling his anger, making him act out violently.

I think that's a bit of the problem as the MCU goes on. A lot of people that hopped on a little later don't realize that a lot of the earlier movies were very grounded in reality and that to jump from two Iron Man movies to Thor was pretty risky. A lot of the first Thor does get a lot of hate for being "boring" and people wanted the colorfulness and zaniness of Thor Ragnarok, but you really had to build for that in the early days of the MCU.

It just falls down in the last third with the fight against the Destroyer feeling low stakes and the final show down with Loki being rushed. Even if the stakes are low the way they have a hard time taking that thing down makes the scene really engaging to watch, just this big lumbering T-800 like weapon of mass destruction just taking its time to live up to its name. And it didn’t need to go beyond that because the point of it was to draw Thor out and to kill him so yeah, the stakes are actually very small yet personal there which I like

Thor was a perfectly fine introduction to the character. The only problem with it was the relative lack of budget and the lack of ambition to call these characters "Asgardian gods" as opposed to "cool space aliens." They could, and should, have portrayed them as mythology come to life. Imagine what that would mean for world religions and how we view our own existence in the universe if the Norse Gods actually do exist (specifically in the MU).
Sure, after Ragnarok they are called "gods" but the title is mostly an affectation as opposed to a defining character trait. As with everything else in those films it's treated as a joke.

This movie is great. It is still my favorite Thor movie. Ragnorok is pretty good and lots of fun, but The Dark World was just way too bland, and Love and Thunder just leaned way too hard the other direction by stripping everything of gravitas (the humor made the serious moments feel like a completely different movie). I like Waititi's injection of a fun rock opera vibe. That's totally Thor, but this movie was dramatic, funny, epic, and an entertaining good time all in one. Is it perfect? No, it isn't, but it does an excellent job of finding the balance between serious and fun that makes good Thor stories great. The next time Thor returns needs to keep what actually worked from Waititi's efforts and rediscover what gave the original film a sense of weight and gravitas.

Ragnarok is a fun movie and it does have times it takes itself seriously but personally i feel it struggles a bit with tonal consistency. Thor 4 though sacrificed everything for jokes that honestly weren't even funny.
Thor peaked in IW for me, and while Endgame treated him unjustifiably cruelly at times there were scenes I absolutely loved as part of his insecure depression arc, like the conversation with his mother and especially the "im still worthy" scene

True enough that Kenneth Brannagh still has the comic accurate Mighty Thor, albeit sweet and short, with Foo Fighters in the Soundtrack (by far my favorite of the four) Still I would not discredit the rest just yet. 2 felt like it would've worked with part 1 but Audiences have changed just as much as how the Comics have because of opinions (mostly non-comic readers) that view the Traditional Thor as boring, which is what put all these modern takes too far at times in the MCU. Sadly it's these opinions that are at times hypocritical. People saying Ragnarok is better, ignoring the fact it's the same formula used for Love and Thunder, it's exactly how Thor would progress given He's pretty much turned more Human since Ragnarok and Endgame. Despite all the rants and hate, I loved L&T as it is, without expectations. It's far beyond perfect but it works for me.
Now I digress, truth is we won't get Thor as close as Brannagh did, unless we get a Co-Directors Dynamic between Taika and say...Neil Gaiman, or even Brannagh again. As Thor is expanding in Characters and Lore, you can't justify a solo director to be able to handle the expansion MARVEL is pushing (with additional hours at least)
So yeah...🎶learning to walk again🎶 I am happy to see THOR Return soon.
