Clint Barton, Hawkeye, has long gone under the radar as the forgotten avenger, the random guy with a bow and arrow and little to offer a team of super-powered beings. However, his ability as an ordinary man willing to stand up and fight, regardless of the odds, brings a relatable human element usually lost on the team coupled with his paternal instincts as a byproduct of being a father. Finally, the skilled marksman is getting his time in the sun with the new MCU series Hawkeye Season 1 and the new Hawkeye show based on the Matt Fraction, David Aja comic run My Life as a Weapon where his worth, impact as a hero is explored. It's a series that explores the extraordinary in the ordinary or unassuming as we dive into not only Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton, but Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop, Echo, Yelena Belova, hell, even Lucky the Pizza Dog. After all these years, I finally feel like I've gone on an ACTUAL journey WITH Hawkeye rather than feeling like the character was just along for the ride. And in so doing, Clint’s worth as a member of the Avengers, his subtle contributions to the MCU at large, his warmth as a father, his paternal presence away from his family, as someone who’s…one of us, one of the everymen, is celebrated. And it’s not simply a showcase of all that is Clint Barton, no, it’s an examination of how those unsung acts of heroism and even mistakes trickle down to every other player in this fantastic series. So strap in for this Hawkeye Season 1 explained as Griffin (@griffschiller) gives you his Hawkeye season 1 review or Hawkeye review and explores why hawkeye is one of the best mcu shows, why hawkeye is so great, and why hawkeye is the most important mcu show we've gotten thus far in propelling Phase 4 forward with new fascinating characters. Enjoy our Hawkeye video essay!

As someone who wears hearing aids, this show struck a chord with me. Maybe I'm looking too deep into it, but the moments when he would take out the hearing pieces really revealed how that its one of the ways he can actually be by himself - to be able to think and understand his own feelings for Natasha. Theres so much noise (visually in the show too) and to see how the director depicts not being able to completely hear makes this show my favorite of the mcu shows.

They should have cut the audio entirely for the entire fight and had them only communicate via signing that could easily be seen on the screen, with subtitles for non-signers. One of the aspects I love about Hawkeye is how personal the story is. The show is Lazer focused on its characters, and where they are psychologically. It's a very intimate look at trauma and pain from it's characters. Clint has pain, and trauma, Kate has hope and an optimistic view, Yelena is carrying trauma, and Maya has a painful grudge. What a great video! It's so nice to see the appreciation of this show and Renner. Yes, Hailee and Florence are wonderful and hilarious and I love characters like that, but I often get annoyed that everyone thinks all characters should be like that in order to make them interesting. Clint has been my favorite Avenger since the Avengers for all the reasons you covered. Even then I knew the importance of characters like him and Nat among gods and super soldiers and Iron Men and Hulks. Clint and Nat are who we can see ourselves in and I think having this show highlight that was so necessary. The emotional load Renner carried was extraordinary and to me is up there with Elizabeth Olsen in WandaVision, how fitting considering the connection between those two characters. He also brings such a paternal warmth that really makes the character unique. There aren't any other characters like that in the MCU. This was my favorite MCU show this year, only succeeding WandaVision because it's just simply a tighter story and everyone just felt on the same page with what needed to be done. WandaVision had a rough first three episodes and then the finale was a let down and Ralph Bohner is maybe the worst thing to happen in all the shows, it's what Elizabeth did on that show that makes it so great. I do need some more Clint/Wanda interactions going forward. That dynamic, with those two (who were fantastic together in Wind River) is one of my favorites in the whole MCU. Only behind Clint and Nat and now Yelena and Kate. What a great show.

@@FilmSpeak "there wasn't anything in the last episode that was out of character from how we know him to be,"
I'd agree right up until the end of the episode and his fight scene. Because for a character that is supposed to be one of the smartest and most calculating villains around. (Someone DD had to outsmart and sneak into his penthouse stacked to the max with guards and security. Just to get into a fight with.) It makes ZERO sense for him to go out onto the street where he is vulnerable to anything, when he is the Kingpin, and would hire someone to do his dirty work and bring her somewhere he is safe.
I can't wrap my head around why he'd go out there. Somewhere a sniper could shoot him, a super hero could fly out of nowhere, etc. He seemed like a childish baby, someone who acted on emotion to walk out into the street alone. The man went TO his pray instead of bringing his pray to him. I mean that's not what he'd do. Or he'd just pay someone to kill her if he wanted her dead.
And when he did get beat up, he just so happened to have zero contingency plans in place? No men or guards to get him out? It's almost like he waddled out into the street with no plan in place for anything. Kingpin would NEVER do that, he ALWAYS has a plan. Maybe.. maybe Kingpin from Daredevil season one. But for season 2 onwards, this is completely out of character and true character assassination.
He took over a prison in DD season 2, proving that even when he loses, he wins, all because he has plans in place. Then in season 3 he took over the police and the fbi, to be literally invincible and untouchable in his penthouse.
We never saw seasin 3 end with Kingpin walking out of his protective empire to go out on the street to beat up DD cause hes having a petty baby rage.
So yeah I respectfully disagree with you sir. Maybe you just didn't care for Daredevil, or you didn't watch the show. Maybe you just honestly think he didn't do anything out of character.
But, imo, this is insulting. Kingpin was made into a goofy idiot who gets shot. And it's even disrespectful to Daredevil that Kingpin "dies" after he worked so hard to put him behind bars and keep him there to live with his crimes. And for the way he loses his eyes to be because he was dumb enough to go somewhere he wasn't safe, it's just pathetic.

If you guys think he didn’t act out of character you clearly didn’t watch or understand Daredevil whatsoever. He would have never gone into that fight, and he definitely wouldn’t have lost it. Not to mention having him get effortlessly beaten by a young girl with no experience is probally the most disrespectful thing they could have possibly done to Daredevil. In Daredevil S3 stopping Kingping was shown to be one of the most difficult fights for anyone who ever tried and then Kate acts it’s nothing, what a joke

Extraordinary. Thank you for highlighting just what makes Hawkeye, and Renner's rendition, so amazing.
I was always confounded by the idea that he is the "lesser Avenger". I understand that, in terms of screentime. But from the first movie, I was always drawn to the character, so perhaps his role in the films appeared more substantial to me than to others. His relationship with Natasha, and almost adoption of Wanda, are two of the outstanding arcs of the last 11 years.
Then, you pair him with someone as wonderful as Hailee Steinfeld, and it just shines. One of the best duos I've seen on TV in ages.
Like CLint himself, I'm not too bothered if Hawkeye gets the recoognition it deserves, or not. It's there. A beautiful holiday gem I'll slot in with my Home Alone rewatch every year. And that's something special.

And yes it set up the future avengers team cause that is one part of it as it supposed to, every Marvel movie is connected in some shape or form hence every marvel movie set up itself for the future story, plots and characters they have done this literally every movie, the difference is they have a bit more time to flesh out more characters this time because it is a series film.

That can be made with a movie with a younger actor, but in the end of the day Marvel as a franchise have to move on they need to think about the next phase and weather we as a fan likes it or not actors grows old and they need to retire and some just like Clints actor doesn't really want to be tied down by more contract, just like Chris Evans and others if they have to re-sign their contract then they are going to need to sign 5-9 years atleast so they just don't want to do that. If MCU wants to explore more Clint's past and his biography it should be in its own movie this series is made to show how clint now move on from his past and he is now in peace with his present self by helping out Kate and introdcing her to into MCU and they need someone young who can sign 10 years of contract to carry on the franchise

To me Hawkeye is one of Marvel's most personal stories. My only downside would be that the show wasn't longer. I've watch some people say that the show has pacing issues, but I'd have to disagree hard. I think that the slower quiet moments give you more time and context. I've seen people make comparisons to Daredevil on Netflix about Hawkeye. I think the reason there's comparing is because Daredevil always maintains a personal focus on the characters in the story, Hawkeye is similar because it never loses focus on the character's and their pain and struggles. Hawkeye is a deep personal dive into the leads of the show and the supporting characters mainly Maya, Yelena, and Elenor. For that reason the show will endure the test of time.

I think a scene of Kate actually mulling over the Ronin killing spree was needed, instead of her basically brushing it aside because of her hero worship. seemed like a great opportunity for a dramatic moment that could spark internal conflict was just passed up on. especially since she forgives that so easily but is quick to throw away the key with her own mother.

Felt a bit underwhelming when the reveal of something that is supposed to have such gravitas is met with basically an "oh ok"
The ignoring of Kate's killcount felt a bit strange since the car chase sequence should be her first time taking a life. I think that adds to my point on Marvel being weird when it comes morality, sometimes they treat things seriously, then they brush past similar things in the next.

Hawkeye is one my favorite characters since Ultron but I wasn't hiped at all for this show. I was wrong.
This is the best MCU Disney+ show by far and one of the best MCU projects. It's a story focused on characters and not on the plot and that's well done. We don't even care about the plot because that's not what the show is about, there aren't big stakes at all, it's one superhero teaching another person to become one and that's the story, I love that. A lot of people were disappointed because it wasn't epic enough, not enough drama, not enough action, but they don't understand that the show was never about any of that, so they can't get into it. If you accept what the show wants to be, like with the Ant-Man movies, you realise that it's GREAT.
I loved every seconds of it, the dynamic between Kate and Hawkeye is AMAZING and it's probably what makes the show so good (also the one between Kate and Yelena is the best dynamic between two people I have seen in my entire life, but we don't see the two together long enough), it's funny and emotional, the acting is perfect, Kate Bishop is my favorite character in the entire MCU. I could watch this show 500 times in a row and I would still love it. For me, it's almost as good as Andor and way better than Infinity War or Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I want a season 2.

Despite the plot holes caused by the pandemic, I have really enjoyed all of the TV shows. Each of them has been different, and gave us far more story and character development than would have been possible in a movie.
Me, I loved Falcon and the Winter Soldier. A lot.
Falcon was far from the first black superhero, but he was the first black superhero I encountered as a child in the 70s, so Sam will always have a special place in my heart. The original story function of Sam Wilson was to introduce the topic of racism into Captain America stories. It bummed me out that Sam was in the movies for so long without using the character for his intended purpose.
The TV show made up for lost time in a big way.
By making Sam the next Captain America, they could no longer avoid the subject. Captain America is ultimately about morality, and you can't have a black Captain America without taking about the reality of racism in America. Doing the story of Sam's transition from Falcon to Captain America in a TV show instead of a movie gave the writers a lot more space to talk about racism in a way that was meaningful to the character, while also showing us a little about how Rhodey deals with and thinks about racism, showing us a spectrum of black responses to the issue. For the other end of that spectrum, they brought Isaiah Bradley into the MCU, and Isaiah has much harsher things to say about racism than Sam does. Harsh things that need to be said.
Sorry. I know. This is supposed to be about Hawkeye. Both of them. And the incredible interpretation of Echo. I can't wait for her show! And I really need a TV show or movie featuring Kate and Yelena having adventures together (with a subplot involving the further adventures of Swordsman and the LARPers).

This may be a long comment. And if it is, I'm sorry. Great video too. I can talk about this series for a long time. I love the series for how down to earth it is. Like, it's not some world ending, multiverse breaking show. And I like that. And I like how the show addresses how people move on from loss. Like, Clint finally moving on from losing Natasha, Kate finally moving on from her dad. Altho, side note, can we appreciate how great of a guy Jack is btw? Dude is so charming, and he is so likeable. He is trying to be there for Kate. And come on, to see he's not a bad guy even tho he's literally got the bad guy mustache.
Anyhoo, back on topic, the series was so damn great. I'm rewatching the series, I hope there will be a Season 2 or maybe Kate gets her own spin off show. Everything about this show I love. Kate Bishop is my 3rd favorite comic character of all time after Batman and Spider-Man, so, seeing her in a show is awesome. And she is portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld, who is instantly likeable in basically anything.

What a great wee video 👌 thank you. The only 3 mcu shows I actually like are 1) Wandavision 2) Loki and 3) Hawkeye the rest have all been pretty lame imo. Hawkeye was an utter delight and I loved pretty much everything about it apart from the mom. That actress was so flat and dull. Kate Bishop was actually likeable and bringing in Yelena was just the cherry on top for me. Massive props also to Renner who was given the chance to bring depth and actual character to the role. I think this show is very underrated and I hope this video changes people's minds.

Quite surprised how two of my favourite Disney+ Marvel shows of last year Hawkeye and WandaVision are both largely great character study dramas with a great overall story that's tied up by the last episode but fumbles something they've built up going into the finale.
WandaVision not only kinda drops the ball on handling Wanda as an antagonist in her own show (the way they used Monica's line in the finale is problematic) but also the wasted potential of Evan Peters with Ralph Bohner. Partly on Kevin Feige for revealing the title for Doctor Strange in the MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS and revealing Wanda's involvement in it early. Partly on Jac Schaeffer for her writing in Ralph Bohner to bit audiences when they intentionally know what it means to cast Evan Peters in the MCU. Also partly on the cast and crew for how they marketed and hyped the show up.
Hawkeye meanwhile nerfed Kingpin as a whole. While I love seeing Vincent D'Onofrio perform and act here, his fighting and taking damage here feels cartoony and comical compared to most of what we've seen in the MCU, especially for Hawkeye being one of the more grounded MCU stories. For building up fans to the very end in unveiling Wilson Fisk, seeing a Disney-fied mob boss nerfed this bad (like how quite a few people including Grace Randolph see Boba Fett as right now, myself included) feels distressing especially when many Daredevil fans regard him as one of thee scariest and best written antagonists Marvel has made.
Do hope in Echo, they really overhaul Wilson Fisk as a threatening mob boss as The Dark Knight and other stories have shown what can be done in the same PG-13 rating (TV-14 is pretty much the TV equivalent).

    • @DarthWinterMadness
      @DarthWinterMadness 2 года назад +4

I pretty much agree with you on all points mate.
Also, yes, it's possible to have a good Kingpin with a TV-14 rating. But I think it's still better with the TV-MA.
I've heard a lot of people say that Hawkeye was inspired by Die Hard and maybe other R-rated Christmas/Action Movies.
If it's the case, they should've gone with the TV-MA rating and go all out.
With it you can have fun dark humour you can't otherwise, but also really show how dangerous characters like Kingpin can be.
As it happened in the first Daredevil season when he crushed the guys head with the car door.
Anyways, I hope Disney will take into consideration that some characters are better suited for mature audiences. Like Daredevil, Blade, Deadpool, and others.
      Cheers from France man! 🍻

Also, the writing in WandaVision's entire runtime is a mess and it doesn't stand a chance from episode to episode, even from two lines of dialogue to the next, the characters contradict themselves a lot and act borderline evil. And I sort of agree with Kingpin, lets wait and see with how much violence Moon Knight can get away with having it's PG-13 rating to know what we can expect out of Echo.

I agree 100% on your points on Wandavision, but respectfully disagree on your opinion on Kingpin. I don't buy into him being nerfed. He took an arrow to the chest and brushed it off. He was slammed into by a car, then took an explosive arrow and walked away. He was menacing in Daredevil by his influence and manipulation. In Hawkeye, I believe he was more physically impressive.

@@wiseguy3675 I respectfully disagree with you because you’re saying my point exactly. I’m not saying that him being more physically impressive is a bad thing itself. Him being cartoonishly stronger at the cost of his menace and fear is the issue. Die Hard still kept Hans Gruber as a threatening villain for John McClane. Wilson Fisk can still feel threatening to match his physical prowess without coming off as a cartoon that lacks the wit he’s known for.

All right, you're making this series sound WAY better than what it truly was.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it (especially the episodes directed by Bert and Bertie, which were the highlight of the season), but there were just waaay too many logical gaps that just shattered my suspension of disbelief, and even if it has all these amazing character development moments, the Looney tunes Tracksuit mafia, the useless Kazi that doesn't emits any sign of credible threat, the great reveal of Kingpin in the penultimate episode, feared even by Hawkeye, to finally nerf him into oblivion by being taken out by a teenage girl (and seemingly offed after one episode, even though we all know he's gonna be back in the future)... So many things just didn't add up that I just can't root for this series as a whole, despites liking the vibe of it. Renner is fantastic, Haylee Steinfeld is one of my favorite actress of this generation and her casting as Kate Bishop was perfect, Florence Pugh as Yelena was a fantastic fit for the show, and this show is still a mess, due to its largely botched finale, that just fell flat.
Which seems to be a constant in all the Disney+ Marvel shows so far, with maybe the exception of Loki and What If ? Great intro, fantastic buildup, botched finales that just didn't stick the landing and just ultimately makes the whole shows less enjoyable as a whole. Now, I know, pandemic, travel restrictions, massive sequence that couldn't be shot, therefore massive rewrites of the scripts... I know. But still... I guess it's still a grounded not-so-ambitious show that gets the results it was aiming for, so in this aspect, I'll give it that.

I as a Hawkeye fan that waited 11 years for this show, have to say that I didn't like nor enjoy this show at all.
His character development from the other movies was completely forgotten. He again got mind controled, his development with not being able to inspire people was stupid, because he inspired Nat and Wanda to be better and become avengers and also inspired his daughter to do Archery... And, him not being as strong as the other Avengers and being just a human was already shown in AoU. So, it kind of felt like they didn't had any idea what to do with his character to me.
I didn't liked that they stole a lot of Clints scenes and characteristics from the comics and completely rewrote it to Kate. (Saving the pizza dog, boomerang arrow idea, he was the one doing action in the car chase scene, his backstory with his step dad the (swordsman) and him being jokey and grumpy.)
Coming back to the Backstory, I don't like that he didn't get one. It especially made me angry because even Echo got one. Also, I didn't liked that they, instead of giving him a flashback story, gave him a monologue where he said that he killed people because he was made a weapon, but who made him a weapon? It doesn't make sense. Show don't tell...But yeah they didn't want to waste much time on him... And, instead of showing that he went full vigilante because the tracksuit mafia terrorised people, they made Fisk manipulate him, completely forgetting his character development from other movies.
The next thing that I didn't like is how weak he was in that show. He needed Kate to save his life twice and there was not a single fight where he was clearly the stronger one and didn't struggl. In most of the fights he was holding back, especially in the last Ronin fight that also ruined Ronin's badassnes by making Echo cut his arm and almost kill him. I mean he could stand against Black Panther in Civil war (I know both ware holding back) and here? Some thug Kazi almost knocks him out. The only fight where he looked strong was against the thugs in ep3, the same thugs that Kates father could easily overpower... Besides, he didn't get to fight Fisk and did very little in the final. Besides, the show is about the consequences of Ronin action but they didn't even gave us a flashback why Clint was even killing the tracksuit mafia. Like, we don't even know why he killed them and why they are the bad guys. They literally didn't do anything bad in this show...
In this show he was supposed to mentor Kate but it actually felt like he needed her more then she him. Not only did she saved his life twice but also did the majority in the final and in the car chase scene. It almost felt like she only needed his trick arrows than him, I mean what did he teach her in this show besides the coin trick?
The show, instead of showing why he's called Hawkeye, made him use binoculars which in my opinion destroyed his name. They could have make a very long zoom out shot, from the watch to Clint, that would show how incredible he's...
The show didn't do justice for Clint, he was always overlooked and mostly useless in the movies and here he kind of also is. The show should make him the coolest and strongest one but they didn't and mostly concentrated on making Kate cool by stealing Clint cooles scenes from the comics. And now almost everyone talks about Kate and Yelena and only few people talk about Clint. Besides he was almost useless in the final and got stuck in a Christmas tree, like why couldn't you make Kate stuck in there instead? Why must he be so lame?
