There's a comic called old man Hawkeye, where Clint finds out he is going blind and before he loses his sight, he wants to kill the villains who killed the original Avengers, it's very cool, he even kills baron Zemo in that
Great analysis. The problem for me with movie Hawkeye (even though he's well done in his limited bubble) is that they basically took nearly everything about his comic book character that made him unique and easily latched onto by fans and dispersed it among the other Avengers. Comic book Hawkeye originally was the anti-establishment snark machine who constantly questioned Cap's decisions, but in the movies, we've got Tony for that. It's the reason why the prison scene in Civil War is the scene that always felt the most "vintage" Hawkeye to me out of any scene he's ever gotten in these movies. It's because Clint is the voice of dissent against authority, whereas in virtually every other movie he's strictly on the side of authority. Even as Ronin, he's not rebelling against anything... he's just exerting authority in a harsher and more personal way.
I think one of the reasons Tony ended up having to be at odds with cap is the contentious relationship he had with his father and how he seemed to love steve more than his own son
"You don't think they need me" "I think they do, which is a lot scarier" These lines sums up the entire Avengers. They are a mess, a group of damaged people, but they are driven, they put in everything they have to save the world , to do what they believe is right, they are gods but they couldn't be any more human, they are fragile but they are the best line of defense we have
And, even though I don't want to be that guy, this is ultimately why I find the MCU infinitely more interesting than the DC film universe. Marvel has always been about god like figures that are ultimately human and DC being the inverse of that, human characters who are more like gods which gives the discussion a real "two sides of the same coin" sort of feel. It's just a shame that DC and Warner Brothers haven't been able to fully hit the nail on the head of their overall premise for the DC film universe. Beyond that though, Marvel takes it's time with its characters instead of trying to force stuff to happen before its time, like DC with the Justice League film. However, seeing films like Wonder Woman and Aquaman do as well as they did, I'm hopeful for what we might get out of DC in the future. Seeing broken, damaged people use incredible powers and skills for the good of others is a cornerstone of the superhero genre. It doesn't have to be that way of course, but I think, even if only academically, this is what the genre will be remembered for once it comes and goes. I don't think of Marvel as the height of cinema, far from it, but it's certainly the height of its genre and that's saying something.

Love how Tony mentioned in Age of Ultron "maybe I'll take a page out of Barton's book" when it came to settling down on a homestead somewhere and starting a family. Flash forward to Endgame and Tony has accomplished just that. After seeing the life he could potentially have through Clint's. And come that same time in Endgame Clint loses that life he worked so hard to protect. Love the pathos of that character. Seeing his relationship evolve with Kate will be fun as well.
And Iron Man dies to save the universe, including the life Hawkeye wanted back and the life Tony wanted, but both families still lose Pepper and Morgan lose Tony and Hawkeye’s family loses Black Widow
I like the context of Clint inviting the Avengers to his home. He's a trained spy/assassin apart of a larger spy community and the only ones who knew about his family were Nat and Fury. In a field where info is life and death, he opened up to the Avengers. Also, Nat didn't reveal this info either, letting him make the decision for himself. Age of Ultron is one of my faves. Another thing, when we see Klaue and the lights go out in an run down boat, it isn't till Black Panther that we see we they freaked out.
Finally someone who understands why Hawkeye is arguably one of the most important Avengers: He is human. He is the personification of what the Avengers are fighting for. It’s why I loved the second Avengers movie despite my dislike of the Widow/Banner plot line.

Yes. I guess he was the reader surrogate and a moral compass in the comic books. (I never came across those parts.) I think the "weak ones" Barton & Natasha are badd ass "normal" human heroes...
He might have been mine, had I not discovered Green Arrow of DC first. Of course there's no rule against liking them both, but the redundancy has kept me from reading his comics.
The fact that he’s seen as less cool then Natasha is insane, he’s been shown to be just nearly less skilled of a fighter, but, he makes up for that by having the worlds best aim, like god damn how is that not seen as cool as it really is, that’s hella useful.
You just proved that by him being the stage for all the other characters, the frame of reference for a human perspective, that he is one of the most important members of the group. He's a fascinating character who is taking the most risk out of all of them...and is the one who went through the most torture, but came out the most unscathed.
not many ppl realise clint isn't only skilled with the bow and arrow.. he is able to aim anything with anything.. an example is how well he threw cap's shield in AOU despite never using it at all
the analysis is amazing but I have a personal problem with MCU Hawkeye and the way they did him dirty. Comic Hawkeye has way more character and if we take the idea that he provides a stage and identity, Comic Hawkeye esp from the "My Life as a Weapon" series would have been able to set a way more precise stage with more wit and a certain lightheartedness
Yeah, that's a good point, but if they went with 616 Hawkeye then the whole family man identity that serves as a stage for others wouldn't be present, so it's a really weird trade off. Therefore, I've always looked at MCU Clint as an adaptation of Hawkeye from the Ultimates, but hey that's how I interpreted it anyways! :)
I was 10ish when Avengers 1 first came out. I never understood why, but Hawkeye was always my favorite avenger and I was obsessed with him. Everyone else thought it was really silly and stupid to have the 'average' guy as my favorite, but I think it was exactly that. He was the most 'average' guy, and thus, was the most relatable to younger me.
Hawkeye's Ultron speech is one of my favourite MCU bits just... Ever. My 2nd of his after the Endgame opening for obviously different reasons. I wonder how you'd interpret the way Ant-Man was written into the wider extended narrative, and especially how the team was able to have it make sense that his role expanded in the way it did
I’m crying a little. Hawkeye is my favorite MCU character and he became so the instant he showed up in Thor. Those few lines of his cemented him as my viewpoint into the MCU-verse, and The Avengers, with that combination of his badassery and the exposure of his vulnerabilities, wow. I see him less as a foil for others and more of a human viewpoint, but I love how you analyze his place in the narrative.
Finally a video showing love to my boy Hawkeye he is one of my favorite avengers and it used to suck when people said he was lame but he’s always been cool to me and especially after age of ultron, civil war, and endgame which made everyone realize Hawkeye is a pretty dope superhero and deserves to be an Avenger
12:58... So great! Someone said on a previous video that Clint has no arch. Nonsense. Leo~ Miraculous that you can fulfill viewer requests with this much depth and insight. And so many videos.. Really stupendous. Nobody watching this could question the emotional and intellectual maturity of the MCU...
I love the socio-depth psychology here, eschewing the fad idea of interrelatedness and synergistic relationships as codependent. Great stuff. Getting better & better...
I hope Jeremy Renner sees this and has a deeper appreciation for his role. I never thought Hawk Eye important till I've seen this. Good job, you turned the meme of the Avengers into the dad of the group.
It's amazing, the analysis is great, and the way you perform very nice. I really like that you can analyze him in one direction. Stage, performance and identity.
So, Hawkeye is the glue that holds the Avengers together? That would make sense. Not being with the team for Infinity War DID make a HUGE difference in the outcome.
He kinda reminds me of that D&D party meme: "We've got a couple really strong tanks, a mage who can alter her reality, a stealthy assassin, a demigod who shoots lightning bolts, a wizard who can warp space, an inventor, and Hawkeye. He's the most important member of the group. His superpower is making good life choices."
This is the first video I've seen by you, and I love it. Thanks for helping me appreciate Hawkeye in this light. Also, nice music / editing choices. The whole video has a good presentation & feel.
In my opinion, Hawkeye is the most important Avenger because he doesn't come from crazy places like the others do, or appear particularly extraordinary. Like the video says, he's able to induce the most dramatic changes in the others as well. He reminds everyone of their humanness.
Honestly Hawkeye is probably my second favorite in the MCU. WHY? Because he does the impossible. Thor is a god, Tony a super genius with incredible armor, Bruce becomes a nearly unstoppable Force... Clint fights the same battles as the other Avengers with a bow & arrow...but no powers! He fights & survives things even gods struggle with...that's impressive
ED-D Smith THATS ALWAYS WHAT I SAY, people like to bring up that he had to be saved by quicksilver one time, but that is one near death experience to the 100s of near death experiences the others go through.
I've always found it interesting that the one thing that never happened in the comics becomes the main structure for Clint in the movies. I love his character in many ways that the MCU never showed, but don't get it wrong, I am happy that I even got to see him in action- as few and far between it ended up being, that is. I just wish they could have given him more meaning without having to make something entirely up for the big screen. Simply put, Hawkeye was never meant to have a family. It shocked many of us, even those who never knew his character arc, when he suddenly had a family on a farm hidden away. It was sweet, yes, and it gave us something to see that comic Hawkeye could never achieve. Which is complete normality and freedom enough to even have a family. That becomes less unrealistically impossible when considering how little the movies actually had him play a role. Making it just that easier for the screenwriters to decide that course of action. It's those simple differences, as described in this video, that end up becoming Hawkeye's main points: support, encouragement, reminder, and hope. I've come to love and hate it, but that's mainly due to being a comic fan. As I've said, I am happy that I got to see his character in such a massive movie series, but I can't help but wish that somethings could've played out a little differently at times. As for the HAWKEYE tv series coming in a year or so, I've heard it'll follow one of the most beloved comic arcs with Kate Bishop. So here's to hoping that the show will offer Clint Barton a little more depth as he trains the new Hawkeye.
You do know that Hawkeye, SHIELD agent, has a family in the comics, right? MCU is based more on Ultimates!Hawkeye than 616!Hawkeye. He even goes rogue, though not under the name Ronin, in Ults after tragedy befalls them. Like, it's literally straight out of the comics in some very direct ways. You could have had 616!Hawkeye, but not as a SHIELD agent. That's the one thing he can't be, at least not for long, in the 616 continuity given his anti-authority leanings.
Hawkeye has long been my favourite Avenger. I think it was Stan himself who said the Fantastic Four are a family, the X-Men a school, and the Avengers a football team. In this analogy, I see Hawkeye as an offensive lineman, contributing to the team's overall success without the individual flash of the receivers, running backs and QB. And that gels nicely with what he does throughout the movies - be it bigging up the others so they can achieve, or taking the hit to free others to score. I guess that makes it obvious why I like him so much...
I just realized, in Endgame Tony is reluctant to help because he doesn't want to lose his family whereas Clint already lost his family. Would've been interesting to see how they played off of each other once again with opposite perspectives.
This premise could work now tbh... Budapest has always been the movie we fans needed about them. And they look fairly young still... But that's just me and my wishful thinking
Dude I absolutely love Clint. He’s my favorite Avenger, espeshlly after I found out he has a Doggo in the comics. He’s just a dad trying to save the world with his buds, and I just find that amazing.
I got stress because of the pendemic. My friend suggest me this video to make me feel better. Indeed. It really make me better. I love Hawkeye since his first appearance in Thor 1. Maybe weird but I fall in love at the first sight without knowing who he was. And as he grow on the movie, I always knew he will be my best. He is underated indeed. But I dont care. I love him and all his strength and weekness. Thank you for this amazing video
Hawkeye is my favorite super hero. I just love the fact that he has no powers, but still is a character that the Avengers need, because between a god or a giant monster they need a normal guy that holds them together. I can just really relate to him and he will always be my favorite super hero.
DC: Heroes first, People Second Marvel: People first, Heroes Second Hawkeye is the necessary humanity that really does ground the MCU, I mean, he basically says what the audience says as they watch the movie I.E. “... and I have a bow and arrow, none of this makes sense...” AoU Wanda Pep-talk
I am looking forward to Hawkeyes show. I still think his daughter should pick up the mantel, especially after how they set stuff up in the the last two Avenger films. Renner's song "Heaven Don't Have a Name" is good, as well. Good for the club or gym.
The artists formerly known as Lil dookie shoes I’m afraid that’d be way to easy, the issue with Hawkeye vs anyone who isn’t invincible, is he’s a super spy who most likely won’t be seen, plus he has perfect aim so it’ll only take one shot to kill whoever he’s after.
I would love to see essays on characters from the X-Men franchise. I know that franchise is dead, but videos on Professor X, Magneto, and wolverine would be pretty interesting.
Hawkeye might have been something akin to a secondary character, one which everyone was allowed to reflect themselves on, but that reflection is such a significant thing to the characters that the only reason it's not center stage, is because a universe-spanning conflict is sitting there.
Translate with Google↓ Thank you for making the video. I'm sorry in Japanese, not English. Hawkeye may be plain, but I like him. I think he is a forgiving person. Thor was monitored, but Clint became interested in him other than hostility when he realized he was desperate for something. Natasha was originally an enemy, but made a great friendship. The twins were enemies, but Clint was the first Avengers member to open their minds. He is an enemy, but can be accepted if there are circumstances. So I think he was angry with Tony who isolated Wanda with Civil War, and when Tony and Captain collided with each other, put only oneside in jail and treated them as criminals. Hawkeye is nothing extraordinary, but likes to be built on his own physical abilities and skills. The way of fighting that requires training, such as a bow or a sniper, is artisan. Jeremy Renner was good at this role. Despite being an assassin and having a family, the despair of losing them and the expression of joy when returning were amazing.
The beautiful thing about Hawk eye ( Clint) and Black widow ( Nat) is simplicity of who they are . They may not Be the most powerful , or the smartest or The strongest of The avengers . But they are the most loyal and human of them particularly Hawk eye who dispite being the only not enhanced human on the avengers team . Stand up to and shout down Demi god Thor or tony or Steve and win the argument despite knowing that they could easily kill him for it. I mean hawk eyes main weapon of choice is basically a tricked out stick and piece string he doesn’t have any powers fall back on in a fight. He has to relie on his training and skills not only as master spy And assassin but as master Archer and hope that Tony, Steve ,Thor and Bruce can pull together long enough to do their parts . Nat of coarse is different story as she always has Clint’s back and He has hers right too the very end.
imagine your purpose in life is to serve as context for another person, like a character foil. always viewed as secondary, as a means for the main to achieve and complete their art. shame. why i love Clint. he himself knows this but instead of being sadden by it he actually lives up to it. happily so. the Avengers, on a personal level, would not have made it far without him.
I always liked Hawkeye for being "like the rest of us." He's how we mere mortals get to be part of the Avengers, part of the superhero world. He's not a god, a super soldier, a once-in-a-generation genius. He's you. And he's me. He is what the team fights for fighting for it himself.
You gotta do a video on Scott Lang, Ant-Man and Peter Parker, Spider-Man. I view them their normal mundane lives to be just as important as the larger than life aspects of the MCU

not many ppl realise clint isn't only skilled with the bow and arrow.. he is able to aim anything with anything.. an example is how well he threw cap's shield in AOU despite never using it at all
the analysis is amazing but I have a personal problem with MCU Hawkeye and the way they did him dirty.
Dude im stoked for the punisher essay, john bernthal played the part so well
Thanks! I'm gonna do Daredevil season 2 first though and then move into his series, so it'll be a while :p
@@ImplicitlyPretentious im fine with waiting. Time makes a better assessment
The video description is easily the best summary of Hawkeye in existence.
I love Hawkeye! Hee is one of my favorites. Great video
Thank you!
Hawkeye is cool. Thank you for highlighting his role in the MCU love your videos.
Aww thanks!
It would've been nice if there was a Hawkeye/Ronin movie between Infinity War and Endgame.
Its A pg PUNIsher... for rogue mcu guys ,,got frank castle ...
Hawkeye on D+ maybe.
Ur essays are very soothing, food for my soul even. I hope u dont stop doing this anytime soon.
Thank u for all ur work.
Very well thought out and presented, I won't look at Hawkeye the same.
As the old guard, even some of my Gen X friends, are want to do
14:12 gotta have a comma after preformed, dude...
🥰🦋🤷🏼♀️🧚♂️
I love the socio-depth psychology here, eschewing the fad idea of interrelatedness and synergistic relationships as codependent.
Great stuff. Getting better & better...
I hope Jeremy Renner sees this and has a deeper appreciation for his role. I never thought Hawk Eye important till I've seen this. Good job, you turned the meme of the Avengers into the dad of the group.
I think these are my favorite takes on the MCU I've heard. Thanks
His superpower is making good life choices."
his powers of observation and his dry humour make him my favourite character.
This is the first video I've seen by you, and I love it. Thanks for helping me appreciate Hawkeye in this light.
Also, nice music / editing choices. The whole video has a good presentation & feel.
Aww thank you so much! That's incredibly flattering of you! :)
Thank you for making this video. What a gem
I have liked Hawkeye more and more every movie. Jeremy Renner has done a fabulous job in the role. His Disney+ series was awesome!!
They should definitely make a movie about his Ronin persona and how he deals with his grief. Now, that would be super awesome!
This was simply impeccable. Great work!
Why did i just saw your channel? good job my my friend you will go far
Hawkeye is my favorite avengers before the movies and in the movies. Love the analysis.
you have done a good job! hawkeye really needs more love!
Well done as always. Thank you. Very insightful.
Aww thank you so much for coming back! :)
Yet another FIRST CLASS, TOP NOTCH and amazing video. LOVE your work!
thank you for giving Hawkeye the love he deserves!
I just realized, in Endgame Tony is reluctant to help because he doesn't want to lose his family whereas Clint already lost his family. Would've been interesting to see how they played off of each other once again with opposite perspectives.
He should have gotten his solo movie in 2009 after Iron Man. It could have shown his interaction with Black Widow when she was still an enemy.
A nice idea, but it was a different time back then.
This premise could work now tbh... Budapest has always been the movie we fans needed about them. And they look fairly young still... But that's just me and my wishful thinking
@@papl20 Somethings like Budapest are best left to the imagination. Because the outcome we may hypothetically get may not be what you expected.
Finally somebody is accurately giving the boi the respect he deserves.
Dude I absolutely love Clint. He’s my favorite Avenger, espeshlly after I found out he has a Doggo in the comics.
He’s just a dad trying to save the world with his buds, and I just find that amazing.
So. Looks like Hawkeye's superpower is friendship.
This coves a lot of why Hawkeye has long been my favorite Avenger.
Beautiful and very well done. Hopefully ppl can see Hawkeye and having powers from a different perspective.
Out of all avengers and superheros I gotta say Hawkeye is the most normal guy. People forget he's just human.
I just found your channel and I have to say it's one of my new faves! I'd love to see your character analysis on the two main roles in Collateral.
LOVE this thank you sir love the perspective on a very underrated Hawkeye
Love your video essays👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Somebody, send this to Jeremy Renner
Hawkeye is my favorite super hero. I just love the fact that he has no powers, but still is a character that the Avengers need, because between a god or a giant monster they need a normal guy that holds them together. I can just really relate to him and he will always be my favorite super hero.
amazing essay, congratulations mate
Hawkeye actually got something the avengers don’t have, a perfect happy family
Iron man had it
CrazyViral Videos yeah but that’s after infinity war but yeah that’s right
Very on point analysis lad
Unpopular opinion: Hawkeye has always been my favorite. Even in the comics
Amazing explanation. Really, Thanx for doing this one.
DC: Heroes first, People Second
Marvel: People first, Heroes Second
Hawkeye is the necessary humanity that really does ground the MCU, I mean, he basically says what the audience says as they watch the movie
I.E. “... and I have a bow and arrow, none of this makes sense...” AoU Wanda Pep-talk
Man I wish hawkeye wereused more. I loved that he got a huge part in age of ultron and I wish they would use him more as a character.
Can you do a video essay for Lost in Translation and Requiem for a Dream?
I am looking forward to Hawkeyes show. I still think his daughter should pick up the mantel, especially after how they set stuff up in the the last two Avenger films. Renner's song "Heaven Don't Have a Name" is good, as well. Good for the club or gym.
Men, after watching this video, I love Hawkeye, now I have to rewatch all the avengers movies.. thanx guy
I agree Hawkeye would only be setting for the other characters, if it weren't for Jeremy Renner making him way more interesting
Screw hulk vs wolverine, I need a Hawkeye vs antman movie ASAP!!! just gonna be an hour and a 1/2 of Jeremy and Paul roasting each other's characters
Aren’t we getting a Disney+ show with Hawkeye? I’m actually really excited this!
Jeremy Renner is poopy, but I've always liked Hawkey. He was always the heart, I felt. The humanity.
Hawkeye and Nick fury are by far the most grounded characters in the universe.
Good work
Thank god someone finally did this!
This is great. I really liked the relationship between Hawkeye and Black Widow. I hope he shows up in some way in her movie.
This was rad, well done
I really like him! Thank you for this video
Aww thank you! 😊

Thank you for making the video.
Hawkeye is basicaly Xander of this Scooby Gang
For charecter to be apart of a team that comprises of superpowers secret agents and super soldiers Client was the most human out of all of them
Nice analysis
imagine your purpose in life is to serve as context for another person, like a character foil. always viewed as secondary, as a means for the main to achieve and complete their art. shame.
why i love Clint. he himself knows this but instead of being sadden by it he actually lives up to it. happily so. the Avengers, on a personal level, would not have made it far without him.
Love this channel ❤️
Aww thanks!
Hawkeyes the heart and soul of the team and that’s just facts
Underrated avenger
I always liked Hawkeye for being "like the rest of us." He's how we mere mortals get to be part of the Avengers, part of the superhero world. He's not a god, a super soldier, a once-in-a-generation genius. He's you. And he's me. He is what the team fights for fighting for it himself.
Good stuff bro
You gotta do a video on Scott Lang, Ant-Man and Peter Parker, Spider-Man. I view them their normal mundane lives to be just as important as the larger than life aspects of the MCU
